This landmark new book features 93 photos from the historic 1988 Yellowstone fires, dramatic accounts from those on the front lines, and the remarkable story of Yellowstone's rebirth as blackened mountainsides have given way to green stands of lodgepole pine and aspen.
Featuring a detailed timeline of the fires, including 7 maps showing the explosive growth of the blazes, Yellowstone's Rebirth by Fire , dispels myths about fire and discusses its history and legacy in the park.
Yellowstone is one of my favorite places on earth. How lucky I am to be easily within distance. The summer of 1988 I lived in Southern Idaho and was directly influenced by the smoke and reporting from the fire. Having returned to the park many times since then (picking up this book on one such trip) I’ve seen the rebirth by fire starkly.
Having been to the park many times in the early 1990s and again in 2018 this book adds background to what I saw. The growth is remarkable. It is a beautiful place and reading the history of the fires and seeing the new growth is fascinating.
