First edition. Nero's Vice is a manuscript that is reputed to be a firsthand account of assorted perversions in ancient Rome. It is supposed to be the vilest piece of pornography ever to have been written, and as such, a desirable item for Sleaze Magazine to publish. When word of the impending publication to the press, a series of threatening notes turn up at the publisher's office. Then there are the disconcerting parts of dismembered bodies that are found around the office. Jacket chipped. 160 pages. cloth, dust jacket.. 8vo..
The book started strong with a company focused on sleazy magazines intending to publish a book on Nero's vices. People are murdered and someone tries to prevent the company from their endeavor. What is the reason for it? Why is this book so dangerous? This could have been a very intriguing story about a lost pornographic book getting re-published. There were references to The Satyricon and some obscure film making I really liked. But the plot soon got too confused. It led the main character to Hollywood and Italy, even some Neo-Nazis were involved. With them the story became absurd (e.g. Hitler's body). Sad to see. The author could have made much more of his raw material as this mystery thriller going bad satire. Only for fans...
