Both of the men suffer drastically from the effects of their time in the war. Their behaviors affect all those around them, but their wives and children the most.In Omaha, a third family is added. So different in family make up, background, and situations, the three families nevertheless manage to make it to somewhere near the middle of Montana, which they consider must also be the middle of nowhere. Over the course of their suffering and difficulties with the weather, the terrain, the land's demand for new skills, and trying to make a living in such a new and different place, they manage to get their homesteads made good.At the suggestion, planning, and work of Tessa Tanner, the teen age adopted daughter of Gordon and Virginia, the new community is drawn closer together, and eventually become a town, which they name Nowhere.
