Locked Up
Locked in is a hard-boiled police thriller that will have you gripped from page 1. It will appeal to fans of authors like Rachel Abbott, Ed James, Joy Ellis and Angela Marsons.
Ariadne (Ari) Teddington is not having a good day. She finds herself in the middle of a bank robbery and hostages are taken. She is one of them. Her biggest immediate problem is that she is a prison guard. Next to police, criminals hate prison guards the most.
Among the hostages is a child and a policeman and a robber who is barely holding it together.
While the robbers are issuing their demands, Ari is desperately trying to think of a way to get them all out before anyone is harmed ... or killed.
This is a rough and tumble story premise that kept this reader riveted to the fast action. Warning: Graphic Language. Some of the happenings could have been taken from news headlines. It's a drama that escalates until the final page with a brutal ending.
Although second in this series, this is easily read as a stand alone. I do, however, always recommend starting at the beginning for a fuller picture of all the characters involved.
Many thanks to the author / Bloodhound Books / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Locked In is the second book in the Locked series. If you have read Locked Up, the first book in the series, you will remember the main character Ariadne. Personally I would suggest reading in order if possible.
Ariadne does not bank on her day turning out to be very different from the one she had planned. We all see in the news about robberies but how many of us have ever actually been involved in one? Well that is exactly what happens to Ariadne. In a way, Ariadne being a prison officer, gives her some sort of knowledge as to what to do and expect. It doesn’t stop her from being scared for her life though.
The book is pretty much set over the course of a day and the tension mounts through out. My heart was in my mouth plenty of times whilst reading this book and I really had no clue how things were going to end. Ariadne is very much stuck in the middle being the go between on the phone to the police and relaying messages to the robbers and it truly makes for some gripping reading.
Locked In had me hooked from the start. With some unexpected twists and turns the author ensures she takes the reader on an exhilarating roller coaster of a ride. I have no idea what the author has in store for Ariadne next but I certainly can’t wait!
This book promised suspense and drama and it more than delivered its promise.
The protagonist, Ariadne Teddington is held against her will as a bank heist hostage. Held with several other people, the race is on to try and survive. Ariadne is a prison guard and the tension surrounding whether the criminals guarding the bank know this is more than my beating heart can take!
It was an excellent read with fantastically written characters who revolve not just around the heist plot but several other character sub-plots which all tie together.
I haven’t read the first in the series and didn’t know the characters before picking up this book and I really didn’t find it a problems. You’re not on the back foot or miss any information or character development as a result. Highly recommend!
Locked In is book number two in The Locked trilogy and is brilliant! This story focuses on the main character Ari/Teddington who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I actually felt sorry for Ari throughout the story as her character never has it easy.
Locked In will read well as a standalone but does refer to book one in the series but only briefly, no spoilers. However, I would highly recommend they are best off read in order so you become familiar with the characters.
Locked In is easy to read, fast paced and has an explosive, action pacted ending! A well deserved four stars from me. Highly recommend this series so far, I cannot wait to see what lies ahead for the characters in the final story.
It is great to be back reading about Ari and some of the other characters from the previous book, and this one is a little different from the first. I would definitely recommend reading Locked Up as it gives invaluable insight into the characters and sets up a base for this story to continue from. Ariadne is having a bad day, it gets worse. Charlie’s day is not going according to plan either and Piper is just hoping he will still have a job at the end of what is going to be a very long day for all concerned.
A lot of this book is set during a bank robbery and Gail has done a great job of engaging and keeping my focus as the story unfolds. She has some very clever observations from Ari, as well as her thoughts that slowly builds up the sense of tension and suspense. At the same time Piper is dealing with his team and running an investigation with some higher ranks putting their tuppence worth in. Teasing little snippets are given as the story builds, but to be honest I was pretty hooked from the first page and Gail did a wonderful job of keeping me engaged right the way through the book.
As with her previous book, you do get a sense that the author has done the research for this. It has a good believable and realistic feel to it. The plot has, in my opinion, been very well-developed and had me turning the pages eager to find out what was next. The characters range from those you will love and those that are pompous, annoying or just plain nasty. The pace of the story gradually builds as the story flows to a grand finale style conclusion.
This is a book that I would definitely recommend to readers who like a good crime, mystery, thriller. As I suggested before it is better to read Locked Up first, it will give a better understanding to the characters.
I'm trying not to give all the books a read five stars on Goodreads because it starts to look suspicious, but I just didn't have a choice with this book. This story is really, really good. 'Locked In' is the second of a trilogy and I received it as a BookBub freebie. It was billed as a gritty page turner about a bank job and hostage situation with the protagonist, Ari Teddington, a prison guard, trapped during the robbery. Because it is the second book, it takes a little perseverance to get into the plot because there is some back and forth to the first book in the trilogy. That was the only weakness in 'Locked In', and I solved the problem by skimming backstory (there were a couple places, not many), but it didn't hurt the story at all. It's been a long time since I've had to make myself put a book down so I could get some sleep and then want to pick a book right back up in the morning as soon as I can. 'Locked In' did that for me. Teddington was a great character and her actions in her situation were so believable. I liked the sparse writing style and lean dialog. Again, really well done.
G.B. Williams' Locked In, the second novel in a reported trilogy, is as good as the first. Williams brings back previously introduced characters including disgraced, former cop and convicted murderer Charlie Bell and prison guard Ariadne Teddington.
In this novel, Teddington is in a local bank with other customers when the bank is robbed by a group of violent criminals. The customers and employees of the bank are then taken hostage, the bank surrounded by the police and the story unfolds from there.
More backstory is provided on Charlie Bell and Ariadne Teddington which adds to the depth of the characters.
This is another well told, crime caper thriller and recommended to those that like gritty, violent crime thrillers.
Unfortunately, the third novel is not due until August 2018.
Ariadne Teddington’s day is definitely not going according to plan. To top it all off, she is standing in line at the small local bank, when there is a loud crash of the door. Turning around Ari comes face to face with the muzzle of a gun. Her day just got even worse. The bank is being held up by thieves. Ari knew things would not get any better if they found out she was a prison guard. While trying to keep a low profile, she still tried to help the other hostages by keeping the heat off of them, especially when there is a mother and child near her.
The local police were prepared for this bank heist as they had an inside man on the job and an informant on the inside. Things do not go as planned though when they realize Ariadne Teddington is also locked inside the bank too. Ari has a history and it would become a field day if word got out that she was a hostage especially with her recent history.
With bank robbers, who may not necessarily have everything under control or be as prepared and a roomful of hostages, can Ari diffuse the situation so they can all make it out alive?
LOCKED IN is a slow build police thriller that will suck you right in right from the first page. I found myself really fascinated by Ari as she seemed so real to me. Even though she was a prison guard and worked in an environment where she had to be tough, she still knew her limits. She uses her head instead to try to help everyone stay alive. She is portrayed as such an ordinary person that it made the story seem more real and believable.
I know this is the second book in the Locked In Trilogy, but it can be read as a standalone. There are some references to what happened in the first of the series and some characters that were also in the first book that make an appearance, but I never felt lost while reading. However, I now want to read the first book of the trilogy as I really enjoyed this one immensely.
G.B. Williams really knows how to write a scene. Her imagery is so vivid you feel like you are right there in the middle of it all taking part in how the story will go. I found it quite exhilarating. If you love a slow build up story, then you do not want to miss Locked in. I highly recommend it be added to your reading list.
locked in by gb Williams. Ariadne Teddington is not having the best of days. she's gone to the bank which is last on her to do list joins the queue turns around and she is staring at a hand gun. Not her day. if they find out who she is it will get much worse. she needs to keep her head Down. with her is a child, a policeman. can she get these people out as well as herself? but they get locked in. what will ariadna do? a fantastic read. lots of twist action just keeps me reading. Loved story and the characters. apart from the badies of course. 5*.
Ok, so this is book two in a series and I haven’t read book one. I hate doing that and it is normally something that I avoid but for some reason I read the blurb for this book and I just wanted to read it. And I’m very pleased that I did.
What followed was an unexpected thrilling read that hooked me right from the start and kept me right there until the very last page. It was a book that I stayed up late to read, it’s a book that I thought about when I couldn’t read it and it’s a book that I made sure that I had more time in the day to read. I had to know what happened.
Ariadne was a great character, although not always that likeable she was engaging and incredibly feisty, she has to use everything that she’s got when she finds herself caught up in a bank robbery. She finds herself getting the attention of the robbers when one of them recognises her from his time inside. That is not good for Ariadne.
I don’t feel for a moment that I missed out because I hadn’t read book one, but I have now got the first book, Locked Up, on my kindle ready for me to read when I get the chance and I will most definitely be reading book three when it is released later in the year.
This is a twisty and turny thrilling ride with some great characters and an original take on what could have been quite a run of the mill storyline. I really enjoyed reading this book and will most definitely recommend it to my friends.
This is book 2 of The Locked trilogy. Many sequels or number x in a series can be read and enjoyed as stand-alones. However, in this case, it is vital that the reader invests in the original and reads this book in its proper order as intended by the author. There is so much history (and baggage) carried forward from the first book that at times I felt rather like a boy at a new school who has joined in the third year – totally at sea.
However, I am clear that, even had I already read the first book in the trilogy, I would not have awarded the thriller more than 3 stars. I read non-fiction for education and fiction to escape. A truly first-class novel will draw me into a fresh, new world. There were too many times when this book pulled me up short and out of any reverie and was in fact plain annoying or frustrating. I have several issues which lead me to that conclusion and the author deserves an explanation.
On too many occasions to show that a character was interrupted by another, just half a word was used – it just didn’t work and there are much better ways to do it. Additionally, in places, the grammar was poor. I do so lament the death of the comma and semi-colon. I also had a problem in understanding which market the author was aiming at. She explains, presumably for the American market, the difference between a prison officer and prison warder and also makes reference to a town car. All this in a novel set in the UK. However, for me the most glaring error was to introduce the local Police and Crime Commissioner who then took charge of the ongoing police operation on the ground. For the sake of American readers, a PCC is responsible for appointing the Chief Constable and setting policy amongst many other things. His (or in this case “her”) responsibilities do not cover anything remotely to do with operations.
The plot revolves around a bank heist which goes wrong and results in the robbers taking hostages. It’s not a particularly original plot but the style of writing is good and it romps along at a very good rate with plenty of light and shade which retains the reader’s interest. Apart from my previous comments, the dialogue is believable and realistic but I found that I could not relate to any of the characters so felt very little when one was injured or adversely affected by the violence.
In short therefore, it’s a book for holiday reading when relaxing as it’s easy to put down and pick up again but do read the first in the series before considering this one.

Breakaway Reviewers received a copy of the book to review.
Locked In is the follow on to Locked Up, this can be read as a stand-alone, but you benefit more from reading the first and it is too good to not to. How’s your luck? On a day off and a simple visit to the bank goes terribly wrong for Adrianne. You would think her life is hard enough in herprison role, but she is put through the miss as a hostage. Having enjoyed Locked Up, especially Adri’s role I was waiting for book two and was thoroughly caught up in the action from page one. I was wondering what scrapes would happen and it would be good, even I underestimated how much. Williams has thought out the characters roles and personalities, it was so easy to keep track of how was whom. The genders, ages, and evilness was described to perfection. Giving each character their rightful place.
Locked In has full on drama and tension from page one, and I could really feel the fear of the hostages emanating from the pages. A good author can captivate you and keep your interest held not only in the plotlines, but investing in the characters. Williams did this from the off. I highly recommend Locked In for crime readers looking for a gripping read with a different setting.
It’s set around six months after the end of the last book. Ariadne Teddington had just popped into her local bank when she ends up being held hostage. Unfortunately one of the robbers recognises Ari, as a prison guard and potential threat. Trying to protect her fellow captives she puts her life on the line.
The first book in this series, Locked Up was one of my favourite reads of last year so when I found out there was going to be a sequel I jumped at the chance to read it! I would recommend reading Locked Up before you read this, to get a better feel for the characters.
This story was a fast paced, nail biting, with several moments that made me gasp out loud. The story is told from three points of view, Ariadne, Charlie Bell and DCI Piper who we met briefly in the last book. This book focuses a little more on Ariadne and DCI Piper, which was nice to get to know them a bit better.
Ariadne, just can’t seem to catch a break! She’s caught up in a prison riot now she’s been held hostage. I feel like she attracts trouble like a magnet. She’s still one of my favourite female characters, brave, headstrong and facing down robbers all while wearing a corset.
I have to be honest it took me a little longer to get into this book than the last one. I can’t say why exactly, maybe it’s because I’ve read and seen quite a few hostage situations in books and TV and it’s just become a little cliched to me.
Also I felt like a lot of the book was just a set up for the next in the series Locked Down but there was a big revelation at the end which makes me excited for the next book.
I received a free copy of this book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.
The best-laid plans of men?? A well-planned robbery, set up perfectly, and the bad guys know the police with be there but still go ahead with their plans. Okay, so will pre-knowledge and well-practiced performance prove to be enough for a perfect crime. It might work out, or fate may step in.
There is always the chance of something going wrong, thus sayeth Murphy’s Law. So there should always be an out, a plan B so to speak. And there is, it comes in the form of Ariadne Teddington, a prison guard. Ariadne, or Ari, for short. Ari walks into the bank on her day off, right into a bank robbery. The customers and workers are held hostage as the thieves go about gathering their loot and demanding a van to make their escape. The drama continues with some hard knocks, death and threats of more death.
After the robbers discover who Ari is, she becomes their main hostage. And the dance begins. The police try to negotiate for the surrender of the hostages, the thieves threaten to kill them. Ari and an undercover cop try to figure out what to do, the bad guys move to prevent any conspiracy amongst the hostages. And things go from bad to worse as the thieves advance their plan. This book has plenty of action, edge of the seat mystery and twists. Enough to satisfy any reader.
While I found the story exciting, the writing needs some improvement. However, it did not interfere with the read. A well-done police novel with hero and villain, the brave and the coward, the good and the bad. An enjoyable read.
Ariandne Teddington is prison guard and has 2 days off. She's was to paint a room at her Mum's house. But she decides while out to make a deposit to her account at a branch doesn't always use.
While waiting to make her deposit, bank robbers come in with with guns. Two shots fired into the ceiling all told to drop on the floor and not look up.
There are customers other than Ari (nickname), a woman and a young daughter, a off duty officer an a woman who just met with the bank Manager, plus two tellers.
The police knew there would be an extra large cash delivery that morning. They set up a team in a van that could not be seen when the robbers entered the bank.
One of the robbers knew she was a prison guard, which was a problem.
There is so much more to this story you need to read this book.
The start of the story easily pulled me in, I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. We all have bad days but for Ariadne this day is going from bad to worse. Ariadne is like a magnet for trouble but she is such a likeable and feisty character.
If you have started the series with this book then I really don't think it would be a problem as events are mentioned from Locked Up which is the first in The Locked Trilogy. However as with all series to get the full picture especially any character history it might be better picking up a copy of book 1 then moving onto this one.
Locked In moves pretty quickly and I did wonder whether the tension would continue throughout. Well I can honestly say that I was kept gripped all the way through with the action taking place in the bank but also showing the reader the police trying to control events.
GB Williams sets the scene perfectly giving the reader tense situations along with a few twists and turns that keep the plot very interesting.
Four stars from me!
With thanks to Sarah at Bloodhound Books for my copy. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.
Thanks to Bloodhound Books and the author for the advanced ebook copy! Check out my blog for more about the Author!
Last year, I read and loved LOCKED UP which is book one of this trilogy (see that review and blog tour here). So I was very excited to see another installment was releasing. LOCKED IN was another gripping thriller and Adriadne is back!
I would highly recommend reading book one in the series before starting this one. There is a lot of information from LOCKED UP that'll help out and you'll get to know Adriadne better. I also don't want to give away too much and spoil anything for those who have not read book one yet.
Instead of a prison we're stuck in the middle of a bank robbery. The robbery quickly turns into a hostage situation and Adriadne is desperate to find a way for them to escape from the stressed robber. Will they all be able to leave the bank alive?
Overall, this one had the same fast-pacing to it that LOCKED UP did and I loved where Williams brought Adriadne this time. She's a strong female lead and I'm excited to see where the concluding chapter in the trilogy brings her.
I took a chance on Locked In despite the negative reviews, most of which said I was repetitive. P!is it's set in England and I have a weakness for books set in England. The plot wasn't bad although it wasn't groundbreaking, but my goodness, we were told numerous times that the main character Ari was concussed, DCI Piper feared for his job, etc. Ari gets pretty beat up and almost passes out yet she can drive a stick shift and other activities that seem implausible. I didn't read the first book in the series. I don't have background on why Ari seems to love ex-con Charlie Bell or why he was convicted of murder. Some of the book just doesn't make sense. Cut the repetition and you probably lose at least 50 pages. I don't think I will continue reading this series.
This book had me hooked from the first page and the pace didn't let up until the end. Really enjoyable read and I will definitely be looking up the rest of the books in this series, both the before and after books.
Being a hostage has to be a person's worse nightmare but when you are a prison guard it just goes from bad to worse. This is the problem facing Ari an off duty female prison guard just stopping off at her local bank to run some quick simple errands, but along with 8 other people she soon wishes she had skipped that part of her day. To make matters worse the police knew there was going to be a raid and slip in one of there own undercover officer's in. Can Ari keep her cool and keep everyone alive before the kidnappers are caught or are tempers and guns about to blow.
This is the second book in the Locked Trilogy and I really enjoyed it!
I think to get the most out of this book and if you are planning on reading the other books in the series that you do ready them in order as the characters and back story run through the books.
I really liked the layout for this one and the plot is focussed over a short period of time. The pace was great and the whole book reads really well.
Four stars from me, I am loving this series so far and I am definitely looking forward to reading the final book in the trilogy now!!
A strange continuation of Locked in. Charlie is out of gaol but cannot find a good job because he was a cop and he killed a vilain because they could not convict him ever. He agrees to join a gang but tell his old boss.when the heist will happen. The love of his life is in the bank paying bills and she gets caught as a hostage. It is all complicated with the police wanting the hostage out without trouble or anyone killed. And the end revealed who the mole was a cop who was in the bank as a hostage also.
Now I,have to wait for September to read what else is going to happen.
Such a fascinating, enthralling adventure. Highly recommend.
I am angry. So angry. I was sucked into this amazing book and now, I have to purchase any and all of the others since I didn't realize that this was a series. Honestly, I devoured this book in two days and was completely enthralled. Truly amazing!! This book was a true intense thriller and I could not stop reading. I hope that the rest of the novels in this series are as intense as this one! If you want a novel to keep you on your toes, constantly guessing what's going on, I highly suggest this one.
While I was reading this book, I realized that it was part of a series. There was some history to the characters that a first time reader would have missed out on. Otherwise it can be read as a standalone book.
It was gripping from the start and I found myself on the edge of my seat many times, holding my breath, hoping that Adriadne would come out of it OK. Quite surprising twists and turns keeps the reader glued up to the last page.
I would love to read the whole series. Gripping stuff!
I am grateful to Bloodhound Books for sending me an ARC of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. Having read and enjoyed Locked Up, the first part of the trilogy, I was looking forward to the sequel, and although I did not find this as gripping as its predecessor, it is nevertheless a fast-paced and entertaining story. It describes a heist in a bank and the subsequent events and presents a panoply of interesting if somewhat one-dimensional characters.
I liked book 1 but I really liked book 2. Its a gritty and raw story that brings the main players from book 1, back together in the most unlikely of ways and definitely not a good way.
After reading both books back to back in 2 days, I could quite happily read more. What a cliff hanger ending! This author is definitely on my watch list, I'm looking forward to the final part in the trilogy this autumn. X
I felt kind of indifferent about this book. I thought the general setup had a lot of potential but it fell a bit flat for me. The plot was slow going and never built up enough momentum, but my main issue was that I did not connect with any of the characters.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
A very suspenseful book, it got me from the very beginning.
Fast-paced and entertaining, it's a great choice for those who enjoy thrillers. The only reason it doesn't get five stars is because the characters didn't really engage me.
I got an ARC of this book, and this is my voluntary and honest review.
Another great story that kept me engrossed. I did get very confused between all the names and who was who, which is why I've only given 4 stars. In the end I gave up trying to remember who was connected to whom and why and just enjoyed the story on a more basic level. I'll definitely read the next one, so it hasn't put me off!
Story is very hard to follow. It is the second in a series and I haven't read the first one. The characters were not easy to keep straight and their personalities were muddy. The ending was a key down.
It may have been a better read if I had read the first book, but I feel each book should stand on its on.
