Rick Murcer lives in Michigan and like many in that part of the country lost his job in 2008 due to a decline in the economy. An experienced executive, he sent out over 600 resumes without success. With unemployment benefits waning and savings nearly depleted he did the only logical thing he could think of...decide to become a writer.
Fortunately for Rick, he defied all conventional wisdom about self-publishing and literally became an overnight sensation. His first three books Caribbean Moon, Deceitful Moon, and Emerald Moon sold more than 300,000 copies between April and October 2011. He had two books in Amazon's top ten for many weeks and became both a New York Times and USA Today best-selling author.
Rick graduated from Michigan State University and is fairly new to the game of writing. Proving his knack for storytelling, the first piece he had ever written, Herb's Home Run, was published by The Writer's Journal in 2002. Rick attributes his success to hard work and God's blessing and believes that you can achieve any goal you wish if you just set your mind to it.
Rick has been married longer than his wife likes to admit, and they have two grown children, three grandkids, and a blind, black Lab named Max, who serves as Rick's "writing" dog. Each morning Max pushes Rick to his writing room so that the dog can snore on his rug while Rick ponds away on the keys. And pounds away he does. Rick is one of those amazing writers that are so energized by the stories in their heads the words just flow onto the page. He has many works in progress so expect more titles from him in the near future.
'Vegas Rain' is kind of like the other five books in this series, 'Manny Williams Series'. Thrilling, suspenseful, full of mystery, betrayal, deceit and action, lots of action. And gore, lots of disgusting scenes. Which, in my opinion, are pertinent to the story as a whole. You know one or more of the main characters are going to get hurt or worse. But the storyline was different in the aspect of their case, the unusual display of death and depravity, and just how deranged the psychopath they are chasing really is. The characters are still just as awesome and well trained in their fields. Manny was tested in this book. Which I thought was good in the fact that he doesn't always have the answers and he's not the perfect all-knowing Guardian Of The Universe. Sophie is still just as clever and sarcastic. Her confidence in being a woman and a profiler are unsurpassed by anyone in this series. I still love this series and I look forward to reading the next book.
There was entirely too much talk of ‘hot’ people and extolling physical prowess of characters. It almost made me put down the book in the first half. Getting past that, there was a somewhat decent story to be found, though one could guess at some of the major elements of the ending.
SPOILER ALERT!Don't you just hate books where everybody is somehow connected to everyone else? And the hero has a nemesis who puts himself in danger just to taunt the hero? Let's see: the hero's mother-in-law was dating the nemesis. The bad guy calls the hero's wife to taunt her. The sheriff is now dating the mother-in-law. The sheriff's son is the bad guy. The hero's ex-partner is in a relationship with one of the team members. Cemetery workers are in on the plot. The bad guy entices the hero and his team to Las Vegas in order to kill them in a diabolic way. The bad guy goes to the Vegas police station and kills officers for no apparent reason but to taunt the hero. Someone who they thought was dead may not be dead after all. Just such unbelievable things going on. Guess I didn't like the book at all.
Maybe it's just because I've read all the rest of the books in this series and the formula is getting old, but I didn't like this latest book as much as the others. First, it took W-A-Y too long for the story to get started; I was at 28% on my Kindle before I felt as if things had gotten rolling. Second, it was obvious early on who the villain was. I like to be kept guessing, but that didn't happen here. Third, the series needs to expand its cast of characters instead of just killing off additional people from the inner circle. Finally, the overall writing was harder to follow - I had to go back to re-read passages way too much.
Overall, not Murcer's best effort. Perhaps he's got too much on his plate at the same time, and is rushing too much to get stuff out the door. Disappointing.
Another good read. I have really enjoyed this series and so glad I took a chance a few years ago on an author I had never heard of. I was really glad I have Kindle unlimited, as I wasn't aware that more books had been written about the awesome Manny Williams. I thought this book was going one way, I thought I had it figured out, but not quite. The ending for me, good job Mr. Murcer.
Excellent read..strong characters, great suspense, evil protagonist, what's not to like! I really enjoyed how the BAU group was so cohesive and worked together like a well oiled machine. I can't wait to get the earlier books in the Manny Williams series. Mr. Murcer you have my full attention I love how you tell a story! Thank you!
Another great story by Rick Murcer. The team have another serial killer to chase down. You're not sure who's going to make it out, or if anyone will. There is definitely some serious suspense going on.
