Rethinking David and Goliath identifies cultural and contextual nuances in 1 Samuel 17 and explores how they affect our interpretation of the text. This book examines David’s story through a broad lens of research—literary criticism, rhetorical criticism, communication theory, intercultural communication, Christian formation, education theory, and the Hebrew language. You will gain insight into these complex fields of scholarship through Eary’s years of curated research. Phenomenal book. Not only does Eary provide an exceptional presentation on a familiar (though often misunderstood or poorly preached) biblical narrative, she also provides an outstanding introduction to Evangelical Narrative Criticism. On top of all that, she challenges readers to engage Scripture at both the cognitive and affective domains of learning and thereby transform their mind and worldview through Scripture. This is a must read for serious bible students. If I could give it six stars I would.
Fantastic little book on doing Evangelical Narrative Criticism using the David and Goliath story as a case study. A call to pay attention to the details of the text. It reminds me of the approach of Abraham Kuruvilla in his pushback against "Big Idea" preaching.
