When The Side N*gga Catch Feelings

Rate this book
When The Side N*gga Catch Feelings is the story of two women who are unfaithful for two totally different reasons, yet wind up with the same catastrophic outcome. Meet a young girl who is loving, submissive, and beyond appreciative of her husband, Ross. As a teenager, Heaven lived solely for her sister, Divine, and her daughter, Sunshine. Because her mother is mentally ill and her father ran off, Heaven had to do some unimaginable things just to feed the family. Then came Ross, and everything changed. He wasn't some filthy rich, dope boy that some young girls dream of, but Heaven felt like Ross was her blessing. Yet, Ross turned out to be a wolf wrapped decadently in sheep's clothing. Still, Heaven was willing to take the bad just to keep the good. The drama was all worth it for the luxuries of food, clothes, and shelter, not just for herself, but, more so, for Divine and Sunshine. And then there's Treasure. How is it that a woman can have a good man and still not be satisfied? Treasure is far from as submissive as her best friend, Heaven. As a teenager, Treasure had always been the type of girl to juggle two or three boys. Once she was older and met a real man, Vegas, she tried to commit. All of that went out of the window, though, when she met the one that allowed her to be the ride or die chick that she had always fantasied about being. Treasure isn't the only promiscuous woman in this story, however, because Heaven eventually succumbs to the wooing of a man that wants to treat her far better than her ain't-sh*t-husband. She knows that Ross deserves her infidelity. He had never been loyal or faithful to her. However, one thing he had never done was cheat on Heaven with someone in their circle. In this tale of lust, lies, and mayhem, Heaven fights with the feelings that she has for her side dude, while Treasure basks in hers. That is, until all hell breaks loose. These two side dude's that Heaven and Treasure have fallen for pretended as if they could play second to another man... until their feelings got in the way. Then, egos clash, bonds are broken, and, with two beasts like Vegas and Ross, a life is lost in this group's tight nit circle... all because these ladies chose wrong.

Author of Urban Chick Lit, Erotica, and Contemporary Urban Fiction... Jessica N. Watkins was born April 1st in Chicago, Illinois. She obtained a Bachelors of Arts with Focus in Psychology from DePaul University and Masters of Applied Professional Studies with focus in Business Administration from the like institution. Working in Hospital Administration for the majority of her career, Watkins has also been an author of fiction literature since the young age of nine. Eventually she used writing as an outlet during her freshmen year of high school as a single parent: “In the third grade I entered a short story contest with a fiction tale of an apple tree that refused to grow despite the efforts of the darling main character. My writing evolved from apple trees to my seventh and eighth grade classmates paying me to read novels I had written about kids our age living the lives our parents wouldn’t dare let us”. At the age of twenty-eight, Watkins’ chronicles have matured into steamy, humorous, and realistic tales of women's literature. She hopes that The Epitome of Femistry series will successfully emulate ideal femininity while tackling stereotypes, familiar heartache, and relatable distress in a humorous, sophisticated, and erotic fashion.

Bit of a meme book at the moment but actually a pretty unique mix of societal commentary including teen pregnancy, poverty, crime and intimacy written in an unobtrusive African American vernacular style and with a whole lot of amusing genital metonymy. However the quality is completely inconsistent, the erotica mechanical, and the plot moves in quite roundabout ways, worst of all the pointless circular cliffhanger to pad out the book into a series which I will not be continuing.

The drama

Chileeeeeeee this book was a hot ol mess! Idk who was worse between Ross and Heaven relationship and Vegas and Treasure one. Every character was wrong in how they handled things and they’re paying for it. I loved the secrets that were revealed and they were a bombshell I’m definitely reading part 2

I Dnf, not a fan of teens in books.

This book starts out with a teen mom still in high school who also takes care of her younger sibling with a severely mentally ill mother. And of course there’s no father in the picture🙄

I’m just not interested in struggle/trauma porn. Especially in AA stories. It just furthers the stereotype that black women don’t feel pain/can’t feel love and the over sexualization of young girls.

I ended up reading this as part of a traveling book club and I have to say that this book wasn't for me. I don't want to leave a star rating and interfere with the author's average since I didn't seek out the book. But if I had to give one I would say I ended up giving this book a 2.5/5. I feel like it had promise but got too wrapped up in the drama for the sake of being messy and not actually telling a story. Everyone in this book seemed to be a teen parent and everyone except Divine (a literal child) seemed to be ok with the DV that was happening on a regular basis. That weak "maybe you shouldn't keep doing that" from his homebody was just to make himself feel better that he "said something." If he had really meant it he would have taken action to stop it.

Also, everyone in this book was a cheater! The main characters were cheaters, the side characters were cheaters, even characters that didn't matter were cheaters. It seems that finding one monogamous couple in these pages is up there with unicorns and fairies in this book. I like mess but NOT ONE character that was supposed to be an adult behaved like an actual responsible adult. Even career criminals can have some sense of maturity.

The characters didn't seem to fit their personalities. Mello was supposed to be a college graduate with an ounce of common sense but was dumb AF. He went to college to create a different path for himself other than his father's illegal dealings but ran right into that lifestyle at the smallest inconvenience. Treasure was notorious for having multiple partners but managed to get the connect as her man and is slumming it with the help? And the help was a child predator! Vegas was supposed to be a caucasian character but was definitely reading as Black. It seemed like he was written as Black and his race was changed to add some razzle dazzle but nothing else about him changed to fit the character.

This book ended on a cliffhanger but personally I wasn't intrigued enough to want to continue on to the second one. Every reader has their own journey and what they look for out of book. I say that to say just because it wasn't for me doesn't mean it won't be a 5 star for someone else.

I was in the mood for something gritty and urban and this story was perfect. From the first chapter I was hooked! This story was such a tangled web of drama, deceit, murder and secrets. This is an edge of your seat type of read! I didn’t bother with doing anything else until I finished it. It was so good!

There was a lot of drama and the characters all made me mad with their mistakes but I couldn’t stop listening to the book. I really wish there would’ve been more character development, it’s like that started but just didn’t go anywhere. I hated the ending—I understand there’s a part 2 but why end the book in the same exact way it began?? Rated low due to boring smut scenes and the ending! 🥱

LOVED IT

The characters in this book are so developed. They each have strengths and weaknesses that cause them to do the things they do. Everybody hated Ross's abuse towards Heaven yet nobody ever stood up to him but Divine. At least Treasure tried to make Heaven see that she deserved better. Now Treasure she's something else. She's a great friend to Heaven but her lying and cheating caused so much drama and pain to everyone around her. And she kept her secret about Damo just to keep Vegas. She let things get way too out of control. I'm glad Heaven finally experienced real love even though it was from her husband's son. Maybe I'm wrong too but I wanted Heaven and Mello together. Ross makes you want to hate him but when you realize he never got over his childhood it was easier to like him. Hurt people don't know how to love. It doesn't excuse his actions but it makes sense. Can't wait for part 2.

Love, love, love the story. The drama is insane. Leaving us with a cliffhanger at the end I lost my mind. lol although I loved the book and look forward to reading the next one, I can't seem to shake the amount of grammatical errors, misspelled words and missing words all throughout this book. Now I'm reading on my kindle so idk if that has something to do with it. Its not just this author, quite a few books I've been reading has me wondering is it really the author or is it my kindle, idk. Overall, very great read. Certified page turner. Let's get started on the second one!

Great read

I loved this book. I felt so bad that Heaven was trapped in that relationship with Ross. This book kept me on the edge of my seat. I hope nothing happened to Heaven, Divine or Mello! Looking forward to the second book!

A waste

So it starts off with us trying to figure out who got killed and you end it with the same thing? That was just dumb!!! Smh just wasted my time. I read this story just to find out it was pointless.

Cheating games

All I can say is that when you lay down with dogs you get up with fleas. Treasure had it good but her thirst for more possibly messed up a good thing. Heaven just drew one bad card after the other. There’s no way in hell im getting my ass beat like that!!

Ok

The story felt long and drawn out. It had drama, sex, betrayal, murder and a street element. Even with all that, it was boring.

The writing is clunky, prose leaves much to be desired. It's not an eloquent book, and the author misuses the word "subliminal." For instance, a character "subliminally messaged" another on social media; this is just an odd use of the word. (What, were they MK Ultra-ing each other?) I'm sure she meant subtweeting and was just looking for a less informal word. Still, this criticism is nitpicky, as it still got the idea across. I guess.

The info-dumping is a bit atrocious and drags on at times; enough to annoy me, but not enough to slow down the entire story.

There are many errors in the book (formatting, characters' names mixed up like Paris and Princess, or Ross and Mello).

Despite all that, When The Side N*gga Catch Feelings is an easy read and I was able to finish it in an afternoon.

The storyline itself is entertaining and I found myself a little sad at what went on with White Boy Vegas. I appreciate that a few plot points later in the story are also subtly foreshadowed without being too on-the-nose.

Unfortunately toward the end, it got a little messy organization-wise; it felt like the storyline involving Paris and Mello was contrived just to throw a wrench in the mix.

I found it a fairly riveting look into how life may look like for black people. Though I'm well aware much of this is just dramatized, I've read a few articles on young black women's struggles of teen pregnancy; what with many not being taught what love is supposed to look like.

I think it has a certain charm, and the title definitely piqued my interest.

The book started with action, so from the beginning you are pulled into the storyline. It is one of those reads, where you start at something dramatic and then work your way backwards to see what led to this point. Very intriguing. The character development was decent but could have been better. I felt as though, I knew some of their past and things that made them how they are but I didn’t know extensive detail like I would have wanted to. The characters are layered with many dimensions to them so I do love their development, in the sense that each character has their flaws and we learn what they are. For example, one of the characters is physically abusive because they witnessed that in their childhood. I would have wanted to revisit more of what was actually witnessed, or how often. I was also a little throwed off by some of the revelations in the book, I literally had to go back and reread certain sentences because I kept thinking “I know I didn’t just read that right. Did that say?....” lol. I gave the book 3 stars because the ending was a cliffhanger (nothing wrong with those, I like them in fact)...but it was literally the beginning of the book that was restated. I would have liked just a tad bit more of information. I can’t elaborate further because I would spoil the book.

I love most of Jessica N. Watkins' work but I JUST COULDN'T GET INTO THIS ONE.
The part that I don't support is Heaven getting WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY TOOOOOOOOOOOO CLOSE WITH HER abusive HUSBAND, Ross's SON, Mello, WHICH IS DISGUSTING. Why is Heaven keeping it in the family? And, what does Mello's Mama has to say about her ex-man Ross wife Heaven MESSING WITH THEIR SON?
Most of the readers wanted to find out about who was responsible for killing Heaven's older sister, which I believe Heaven's husband Ross may have done the deed.
When Ross came home & discovered his wife Heaven sexing his son Mello confrontation ensued & gunshots rang out, which if I'm not mistaken was fired off by Heaven's little sister Sunshine.
If Heaven's friends Treasure & her man Vegas knew that she was in an abusive marriage, why wouldn't they do more than give her comforting hugs/embraces? Truth be told, Heaven failed herself, but her friend Treasure also failed Heaven by not assisting her exit the environment that she was in. For Vegas, he was business partners with Ross which may explain why he didn't immediately help Heaven.
Heaven should have HELPED HERSELF & NOT TO HER STEPSON MELLO, WHICH WAS & IS SICKENING!
I gave this book a 2 star rating because I liked & wanted to know more about the VEGAS Character.

Whose Loving Who????

Damn, damn, damn!!! Jessica W put her foot in this one. Treasure and Heaven the best of friends have dreams of meeting that one to take then from their home situations. Well Heavena mother is schizo and dangerous. Treasure loves the thrills. Heaven meets Ross who is 10yrs older and Treasure meets Vegas and both ladies gets their dream men; however, Ross is a wolf in sheeps clothing. Mentally and Physically abusive, dog azz manipulator who has been treating Heaven like shid since their marriage. Control freak for sure. Heavens confidantes are Treasure and Mello Ross's son. Mello comes home from school and Heaven discovers their is more to their friendship. Will they take it there? Treasure has been doing tooo much
with one of her latest escapades and it may come back to bite her and Vegas's relationship. Vegas and Ross are like brothers but the beast is in both and then set ups are real! Treasure has to expose her dirty secret to her man to save him and Ross relationship but what will do to theirs? Explosive, crazy ass and I promise you will be salivating for part 2. This is Hot!!!

So original! This book was filled so many twist and turns, OMG! The characters development was executed very well! I loved every character in this book in their own way. Everyone brought something different, yet significant to the story. Heaven was just a lost young girl caring for her daughter and sister, while trying to make a way out of no way. In turn for a good life, she endured so much bullshit from her husband, Ross. Now Ross Ross Ross, where do I start? He was dead wrong and nothing could justify how he treated Haven, buuuuut I couldn’t help but to sympathize with him a little. The only person who I didn’t have sympathy for is Treasure everything she did was for her own selfish needs. However, I can’t deny her love for Heaven, so she’ll get brownie points for being a good friend. Ughh and far as Vegas goes I just feel so bad for him. He was definitely blindsided man, smh. Ms. Watkins might have done something with this book!

Interesting Read

Heaven was in a marriage that was very one sided and volatile. Ross was a do as I say and not as I do type of person. He didn't really care what his wife Heaven thought. However his dirty deeds start to catch up to him during a time he notices a change within Heaven. Heaven has crossed a boundary you just don't cross. Treasure was wild. She tried her best to tame her ways when she got with Vegas. Treasure selfish ways ended up causing more trouble for her and the one's she love. Now she is stuck trying to figure out how not to lose Vegas once the truth comes out. Lies has been told, bonds have been broken, and betrayal has caused a tragedy. I can't wait to read part two to see if these characters will be able to repair the damage that has been done and if they will open up their eyes and realize that they have snakes in their circle.

Wow

I how heaven and divine are ok. Ross has no right to even be upset, BC he was doing good own dirt I know it was wrong being that it was his son, but what did he expect. I felt the betrayal knowing it was his Owen blood but he used her forever thinking she'd be there. When was her happiness supposed to kick it, he took her for granted. Omg I just hope they ok. Treasure hot tail behind should have been happy she had the best man. No cheating and all for her. Guilt should have given her strength to admit her wrong doings earlier. Being that ride or die chick caused her an broken heart. As the old saying goes everything that glitters ain't gold. Guess she knows the grass ain't greener on the other side. I hope princess and d tone cut short. I hope that they get busted. Yes this was definitely a great read!!!

This book had me like wtf and 100% in my feelings. So many emotions. I love how she wrote the book to understand why each character behaved the way they did. At the end I’m like Jessica how dare you play with my feelings like that bc baby I need to KNOW!! I had to give 5 stars. My heart goes out to heaven the most because damnnnnnn damnnn damn!! She made some unwise decisions and I have to remember she is only 20/22 ish so umm yeah but chile I wouldn’t have went that far ( trying not to spoil it) but once you cross them lines can you really come back?? Im so tripping on how Vegas got played. He was so solid and I’m visualizing how he may look. The plot twist on how ya boy was set up is insane and only gets better. Are your day ones truly your day ones … whew weeeee . Read the book yall.

Review of When The Side N*gga Catch Feelings

After the great read I still don’t know who did it and who was it. I’m also trying to find out who the title of the book was referring to. Was it Damo or was it Mello? Hmmmm
The character I couldn’t stand was Ross. He treated Heaven like trash and she stayed with him. She really needed to analyze her situation so she could realize there was more she could do. Her actions with Mello were expected but were not healthy.
Treasure had the world with Vegas, but she didn’t realize it until it was too late. Damo caused a tornado all because of his greed. Because of him an unnecessary storm was brewing.
When the smoke clears who will be standing?

There were so many interesting dynamics in this story. You have Heaven and Ross who are married but Ross’ insecurity causes him to physically and emotionally abuse Heaven. Although Ross was abusive , he was Heaven’s Knight in Shining Armor because he rescued her family from poverty. It was interesting to see how each of them felt their behaviors were justifiable while at the same time they were inconceivable. Treasure and Ross had a seemingly perfect relationship yet Treasure couldn’t let go of her unfaithful ways no matter how perfect her man was. There was so much deceit but I couldn’t bring myself to dislike any of the characters. Ross was an ass but he did try to get help but some people just can’t be helped. There was great drama and jaw dropping moments.

Wow

This book was bananas. Heaven really did have it hard. Ross is a sorry behind excuse for a man. That doesn't make what heaven did right, but it certainly makes it understandable. She deserves so much better than Ross. Treasure meesed up a good thing over nothing. Vegas was good to her and instead of telling him how she was feeling she was unfaithful. Then instead of being smart and popping Damo when she saw him talking to Steve she grazed his ear and left. It's a wrap for her and it's nobodies fault but her own. Can't wait to see Heaven's reaction when she finds out it was Ross who took Ceasar and Angel from her. That ending though, talk about a cliffhanger geeeeezzz. Great job!!!!!!!

Whew chyle……you want drama, sex and violence. This is the novel. This book will have you needing a drink.

Ross rescues Heaven from a life of tragedy. But she suffers: all that glitters isn’t gold. Her best friend Treasure helps keep her afloat. After yrs of dating, Ross, who’s much older than Heaven, marries her. But his insecurities show through domestic violence. Ironically, Ross has a son that’s close in age to Heaven.

Mello, Ross’s son, and Heaven have a friendship that develops into something more. Meanwhile, Treasure and Vegas, Ross’s partner become involved.

This story takes twist and turns. Cheating and scandal and death become entangled into this web of lies. Each person has a story. Each person has a truth.

Thua author always come thru. Ross didn't deserve Heaven. He gor with her at her weakest point and ahe fell for him cuz she needed comfort and a home. He was good for rescuing her,Sunshine and Davina. He treated the kids well. Mello and Heaven was bound to get caught up cuz they always talked and money wasn't an object. Time and conversations brought them closer. I pray they both are ok. Treasure was playing a dangerous game and it cost her future and happiness with the man she loves. Damo was a snake but he was smart i didn't see it coming. I'm so glad Davina did what was needed she definitely didn't need him in her life. I can't wait for pt.2
