Matthew Connor Adventure #2

The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh

Rate this book
“An exciting, action-packed, edge-of-your-seat adventure that constantly has us in suspense... Arnold has written an amazing story, describing everything in detail, giving us a complete picture of Egypt dig sties, heat, desert, underground tombs, mummies, tunnels, snakes, and all kinds of long lost treasures. I loved Matthew, Alex, Robyn and Cal, and the villains in the story were very well done. I look forward to more from the Matthew Connor Adventure series. Carolyn Arnold has created another winner.”

Readers will need to hold on to their hats for this follow-up to CITY OF GOLD, which reviewers described as “a fast-paced action adventure” that is “akin to an Indiana Jones story set in modern times.” Now, the second in the series promises to bring much of the same excitement! Join archaeologist and adventurer Matthew Connor and his friends as they go after the Emerald Tablets to save the world in THE SECRET OF THE LOST PHARAOH.

In Egypt’s Western Desert lies the tomb of an unnamed pharaoh that hides a secret so powerful, it could destroy the world as we know it.

Archaeologist and adventurer Matthew Connor has made a career of finding legends the world has all but forgotten. Though there’s one in particular that has fascinated him for years—the Emerald Tablets. Myth says that they possess the knowledge of the universe, allowing humankind to traverse Heaven and Earth, and have the power to bestow wealth and wisdom upon whoever possesses them. But if they fall into evil hands, it could cause a global disaster.

So when a former colleague stumbles across an ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic map that promises to lead to a pharaoh’s tomb and the Emerald Tablets, there’s no way he’s turning down her invitation to join the dig. He only has one stipulation: his best friends Robyn Garcia and Cal Myers come with him.

The road ahead isn’t going to be an easy one, and their shared dream of recovering the Emerald Tablets is being crushed at every turn. And just when they think it’s all over, they learn there are a few clues they have overlooked. But they’re no longer the only ones searching for the Tablets. Now, the fate of the world hangs in the balance, and soon they’ll find out that when it comes to hunting legends, they can’t trust anyone.

It seems books with an Egypt locale have been dropping into my reading list and The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh by Carolyn Arnold is the latest one. I feel I am right there with Alex as she begins her descent…

Secrets surround the Lost Pharaoh’s tomb and she is determined to protect it.

What she found was so much more than she expected and she felt that Matthew Connor, her Indiana Jones, would be the perfect person to have at her side.

Matthew hops on a plane out of Alaska, swings by Toronto, Canada, to pick up his posse, and it’s off to Egypt and another treasure hunting adventure.

I am glad to be back with Matthew, Robyn, who works as the curator at the Royal Ontario Museum, and Cal who is a world class photographer.

We will have some sexual tension and a bit of goo goo eye romance. I’m not sure what’s what and I don’t think they do either, so it should be interesting. Matthew is a bit of a dufus. Can’t see what’s right in front of him. Oh well, I think we will have plenty of time, even if it’s in future books, for him to wake up.

Underground…oh man…I can handle larger spaces for a short period of time with easy exits, but being lowered into a welllike hole, a cavein, rolling down the river with tons of earth your sky, entombed snakes (yep, we have to have snakes)…They are hanging on, tamping down their fear. Could I? NOPE!!!!

When they went to the airport, I thought, hmmm…something has got to happen…and it did.

The twists and turns, action and adventure, mystery and suspense, kept me on my toes. I thought this would happen, then it didn’t. I thought that would happen, then it didn’t. Carolyn Arnold does a good job of leading me down a familiar path, then jerking the rug out from under me. Think it’s over, oh no, not by a long shot.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of City of Gold by Carolyn Arnold.

As a big fan of Carolyn Arnold’s work, every opportunity to read her books is a dream come true. Therefore, when The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh came on my radar, I knew I could not let the chance to read and review this title pass me by. This is the second book in the Matthew Connor Adventure and it is a great addition to the series.

In this installment we meet Alex, an archaeologist who for the first time is leading an archaeological dig. She discovers the possible existence of a magnificent treasure, which if it should get in the wrong hands would mean the end of the world. Looking to make a name for herself, she sought the assistance of the one person who could help her achieve this goal.

Matthew Connor has made it his mission in life to prove the existence of mythical treasures. When approached by a long lost colleague to help in the search of the mythical Emerald Tablets, he saw this has an opportunity not to be missed. However, no matter how eager he was to proceed on this latest adventure he would do so only if his best friends Robyn and Cal would join him in this historical moment.

Once again, Carolyn Arnold took me on a suspenseful and action packed adventure that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The rich description and the author’s attention to detail made me feel as if I were a part of the adventure. Where is the fun in seeking a lost treasure without a few snakes involved, along with the occasional cave ins and the many hidden entrances? Not everyone can be trusted and figuring out whom to trust was no easy feat. The twist near to the end, I never saw coming. Not only was it a shocker, it was mind-blowing. It shows not everyone who smiles with you is your friend. Besides the danger lurking in every corner, feelings of resentment and mistrust reared their ugly heads among the members of both teams. Emotions ran hot. There was a hint of a love triangle, but thank goodness, it did not overshadow the events regarding the search for the Emerald Tablets.

The characters, both good and evil were portrayed in a manner, which made it easy to understand what motivates them, especially during their triumphs and trials. They each had their issued to work through and they did so amidst the challenges faced during the expedition. My favourite character is Cal. He is funny and knows how to make a tense situation seem light. What made him unique was his eagerness to take part in these expeditions, yet afraid of the threat of danger that came with adventures such as these.

Conclusion/Recommendation
The author weaved a brilliant tale, which perfectly combines adventure, suspense, and Egyptology sprinkled with a pinch of humour to make for a splendid read. Fans of archaeological themed stories would enjoy this series.

If you enjoyed City of Gold then you are going to absolutely love The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh.

Matthew Connor is back in a new action packed, edge of your seat, treasure hunting mystery. I delved right into this book and I couldn't put it down, I have always loved Egyptian History and it is clear that Arnold has done her homework on it as well as she really made you feel like you were right there with Matthew and Co. as they help out on a archaeological dig of a lifetime.

The fabled Emerald Tablets and the tomb of an unknown Pharaoh sees the dig site leader Alex get in touch with Matthew to convince him to come and join her team, Matthew has long been fascinated by the prospect of finding the Emerald Tables that he needs no persuasion and wrangles Cal and Robyn along for the ride - though they are both still recovering from there brush with death in the previous book - what could go wrong in this one right?

Once in Egypt they meet the others on the dig team and get to work, though there are members that will you dislike and feel they are up to something but you get so wrapped up in the danger and adventure that awaits them in the tomb that you forget why you dislike them until all hell breaks loose!

This really is an action packed adventure that will make you feel you are right in the midst of the discoveries they make and the danger they get into. I was slightly miffed at the ending, not how it ended more Matthews decision on something (don't want to spoil it) I can see why he chose to do what he did but still, to actually go through what they did they had to protect the world somehow...

Dont miss the chance to read this fantastic series from Carolyn Arnold.

Another exciting adventure with our intrepid explorers who are desperate to find the Emerald tablets. According to legend these tablets hold untold powers and in the wrong hands could lead to world devastation. The story line and brilliant descriptive writing brings the ancient world of Egypt to life. Egypt holds a fascination for the modern world and all the secrets and myths it holds and this is a novel which takes us on that journey to solve one of them.

On previous expeditions our group had to overcome personnel issues and put aside grievances to work together to achieve the overall goal. Their characters and their traits are expertly brought to life and with the past tensions on the previous expeditions, it adds emotions of love, jealousy and greed to the story.

Any reader who enjoys adventure stories which are full of excitement, danger, with a hint of a love triangle, will love this novel. In creating our explorer of ancient antiquities in Matthew Connor she has set a great rival for Indiana Jones. Look out for other novels by this author!

What I love about Carolyn’s writing – no matter it be a Madison Knight FBI procedural or a Matthew Connor adventure – is the adventure, action and suspense that comes with every page of the book.

With The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh, not only are we on the edge of our seat with anticipation as we join Matthew, Cal, and Robyn as they seek out out a buried, hidden treasure; we are pulled into the action and suspense of the challenges they face getting to the treasure. One cannot simply find a buried treasure without there being snakes, falls, and other hidden mysteries along the path and that’s what makes this read so exciting.

In addition to the adventure itself and the challenges faced on the adventure; there is always some plot in the background that we never really pay a whole lot of attention to even though you can feel it nagging on the edge of your brain.

Something felt off from the beginning but I couldn’t take the time enough to really figure it out. I just wanted to keep pushing on the adventure!

Needless to say, one part of the plot was pretty easy to come by from the beginning; a second part made more sense towards the end; and frankly, the end was a jaw dropper! I was definitely knocked down by that shocker!

Carolyn makes for amazing mystery reads that while you think you may have it figured out – she always throws in a kicker that leaves you shocked and awed. It’s one of my favorite things about her books. She really makes you have to think to figure it out.

If you love a good mystery – a good thinker that makes you really think and piece it together – Carolyn Arnold is a must read author. I highly recommend The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh and as an added note; you don’t have to have read Matthew’s first adventure to follow this one (although you will want to go back and read just to get more adventure and learn more about my beloved pals!)

An exciting adventure that will keep you on your toes!

The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh is an adventurous tale that will give you some history while taking you on a brand new adventure. This story definitely held some intrigue that I had to read it to find out what was going on. I never anticipated the different twists and turns that happened throughout the story. When you think that you have figured it out, you will realize that you were wrong. There was so much intrigue, twist and turns that I didn’t want to put the book down. Carolyn Arnold really knows how to build up the suspense and keep just enough action to keep your attention up to the very last page.

Carolyn Arnold has written a fantastic story with characters that are well developed and engaging. Every character has challenges that they have to work through that adds to it. Carolyn’s stories are brilliantly written, entertaining, and enthralling. This is a definite winner from this author. I can’t wait to read the next adventure that involves Matthew Connor.

Carolyn Arnold does a wonderful job of weaving incredible tales of history and suspense. I know when I see her name on a book that it will be an entertaining and enjoyable that I won’t be able to put the book down. Carolyn Arnold definitely has a gift for writing exceptional stories! I have not been disappointed with a book yet! Definitely, an author that you will want to keep on the top of your go-to list. If you enjoy reading story of history and suspense, then you will thoroughly enjoy this book and the series.

This book is INTENSE! I love jumping right into a book with a cast of characters who had me hooked from the start. The City of Gold doesn't have to be read prior to The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh; however, you will want to read it when you pick up on the chemistry between the lead characters. So onto the 2nd book here - Matthew Connor is called up by an old friend (with whom there is a bit of outstanding sexual tension) after a near-death experience. He's not one to shy away from an adventure and neither are his friends - Cal and Robyn - even if it means sacrificing what they hold near and dear.

In Matthew Connor-fashion, they jump a plan and head off on a quest to find the Emerald Tablets. This adventure is literally life or death as they encounter curses and people who are out to find the Emerald Tablets to use for evil purposes. All of the members of the team have secrets to hide - some darker than others - that threaten the discovery as well as their futures.

The history and culture of Egypt are intriguing and the mystery kept me turning pages faster and faster. Definitely a five-star read!

I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.

Carolyn Arnold has a way of weaving a mystery. The Matthew Connor series is only in its second book and I am waiting for book three. The mysteries are all unique but have that cast of characters to bind them together.

I have always had a love of history. Matthew is an archaeologist who, for lack of a better term, has a reputation for being a treasure hunter. The Secret of the Lost Pharoah takes him and his friends to Egypt. The vivid descriptions of the scenes and the way the dig is handled are so life like you feel like you are there with the crew.

If history and archaeology are not your thing, there is always the mystery in the story. Add to the mystery a tension of former romance and you probably have a little bit of everything in the book.?

Pick up The Secret of the Lost Pharoah and discover the world of Matthew Connor. I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.

After reading City of Gold, I anxiously awaited the release of book 2 in the series. I was delighted when the opportunity to read The Secret Of The Lost Pharaoh came about. It was worth the wait!

Matthew Connor has the ability to come off as a spoiled jerk but there is something very endearing about his as well. I love his sense of adventure. What I love most, is that this book starts off featuring Alex as the lead character and then brings Matthew in, along with his best friends Cal and Robyn.

I love the fact that Alex didn't hold back calling someone she felt would be as excited as her to reveal The Emerald Tablets. There is a TON of action and adventure in this book. It starts practically from the beginning and carries through til the end.

There are twists, turns and plot twists that you won't see coming. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end!

Carolyn Arnold really does her research before writing a story and it comes across so well! I love her style of writing and the fact that each book draws you in as if you were watching a movie. Or part of the book! If this was a movie series, I'd be the first in line to buy my ticket!!!

I received a complimentary copy of this book and have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.

Honestly, I couldn't finish it. Got to 80 pages into it. It was hardly an adventure, of what I read of it. It was more like a romantic triangle soap opera with adventure thrown in a little. I like the reverse, an adventure with a little romance thrown in. Speaking of adventure, it struck as unbelievable that at the start of the story when the archeologist finds some hieroglyphics about the legendary Emerald Tablets, she proclaims in fearfulness something along the lines that the discovery of such items could change the world for the worse in the wrong hands. I couldn't buy it. That's only the first of a few other things that didn't come off very well. Also there was very little description, so I never felt like I was there. The only thing intriguing that I read was the title. I am sorry to leave such a harsh review. I wanted to like it.

Matthew Connor was just coming off of an Alaskan mountain adventure when an old friend calls and invites him on an archaeological dig in Egypt. Alex had uncovered a clue that may lead to the legendary Emerald Tablets, something she knew Matthew would be interested in. But what is her angle? Does she truly need his help, or is there an underlying reason to include him? Whatever it is, Matthew is not about to let this opportunity pass him by.

I love how this author can bring stories to life. I felt like I was along for the ride. Even the danger felt real. And the mystery of ‘will they find the tablets or not’ just adds more allure to the read. The Matthew Connor Adventures send you on an adrenaline rush with no end in sight. The characters are well thought out, and the intense plot twists keep you on your toes all the way to the end.

This book has it all... action, adventure, Egyptian mysteries, romance, betrayal, death and treasure hunting! Can it get any better than that?

Matthew and his friends have had a quiet time since their last adventure, and Matthew is itching for an adventure. When an old friend contacts him about the Emerald Tablets, which are basically his Holy Grail, he jumps at the chance and tries to convince his friends to join his team.

As always, Matthew and friends go on one of the world's most amazing adventures. But can they survive the Pharoah's Curse or will this be the last expedition for them?

I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.

Independent Reviewer for Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books!

I enjoyed this book a lot. It’s a cross between Indiana Jones and The Mummy and gives really good background to the characters.

I liked Cal most of all as his character really comes out in the book, sometimes quirky, serious or funny and a very genuine likeable character.

The twist near the end of the book worked very well and it was written in a way that wasn’t obviously coming at you.

I’m sure I will be reading more Carolyn Arnold in the future.

Welcome to Egypt! A traveler's dream and an archaeologist's playground; where the sand is hot and the sun is brutal. Over the years the mysteries of the sands have been discovered, but how could one map where every single secret lies? In this realistic fiction novel, author Carolyn Arnold gives hope that not all knowledge has been found.

Matthew is a world renowned treasure hunter who wishes to leave his mark on the world.

". . .legacies came in many forms, and they weren't always flesh and blood."

It's Matthew's tenacity that garners a phone call from Alexandria (Alex) Leonard; an archaeologist with a passion for Egyptology, on the brink of a major discovery that could rewrite history and have an everlasting impact on the world. Matthew isn't a lone wolf: his team consists of his best friends. Robyn; a curator at the Royal Ontario Museum (emphasis on the enthusiasm for Egyptian history) and Cal a renowned photographer. With little information the three musketeers pack it up for a month and head out to help Alex and her team.

Originally thought to be aqueducts diverting water from tombs, imagine the shock when that tunnel yields a cartouche referencing one of the sons of Khufu. Everyone is there for a different reason; Alex is there for fame- to make history. Matthew is there with the enticing reference to the Emerald Tablets (ancient tablets containing knowledge that can effect the future). Robyn is there because Egypt is on her bucket list. Cal is there for his absolute love of adventure. And the Egyptian director of antiquities has been invited for obvious reasons. Even though everyone is here for different reasons, they are solidified on being professionals on the dig site.

Once in the tunnel, our group meanders, each at their own pace. Rada, the director of antiquities pauses at the cartouche. Astonishment doesn't last long as the ground starts to shake, and  an enormous "CRACK" is heard throughout the tunnel. Robyn, Cal, Alex, Matthew, and Jasper are separated from Rada, and the group decides to follow the map on the cartouche into unexplored territory.

Our group of five continues on a tumultuous, Indiana-style adventure. Each part of the adventure has breathtaking moments as well as sighs of relief. As they continue through the only path available, it seems there is more to this dig site than was originally thought. Untouched rooms filled with priceless treasures linked to the past, and of course, hints towards an even larger treasure.

Radio contact is finally made, and the group is rescued from underground. Like true adventurers, they cannot wait to get back underground to start cataloging everything they found. However, Robyn, Matthew, and Cal are on borrowed time, and must return to the states. It isn't until the cops, and Reda show up at the airport, accusing the three of stealing from Egypt, that they realize they won't be going home anytime soon.

"The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh" is the second book of the Matthew Connor series by Carolyn Arnold. I'll be honest, I have not read the first book, "City of Gold", but I felt as though a few inside jokes are lost on the reader because of NOT reading the first book.

In this review, I detailed the main outline of the story. What I did not include is what annoyed me the most about the book. I felt the story was MORE concentrated on a man's (Matthew) indecisiveness to which woman he wanted a relationship with, causing unnecessary drama that overshadowed what could have been a brilliant plot. I'm not kidding when I say that this indecisiveness was on every other page of this book. At first I did not mind it, but as the book continued, I really wanted to skip over some parts and be more involved with the archaeology standpoint rather than the high school drama.

While I wouldn't completely write "The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh", OR Carolyn Arnold off, I don't believe I will be picking up this book again anytime soon. I am interested, however, in reading "City of Gold" JUST to see if this series can be redeemed.

Full disclosure, I was provided a copy of this book by the author, however, have voluntarily chosen to write a review. All opinions are my own. The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh is scheduled for an April 17, 2018 release.

Connor is a modern-day Indiana Jones

The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh is the second in the Matthew Connor series of books by author Carolyn Arnold. Matthew, a renown archaeologist known in certain circles as “The Legend Hunter”, is contacted by a colleague currently working on a dig in Egypt. Having possibly discovered the tomb of a nameless pharaoh, Alex seeks Matthew’s expertise to join her in what may end up being the discovery of the fabled Emerald Tablets. Not willing to pass up the opportunity of a lifetime that would solidify his reputation, Matthew invites his best friends to tag along for the adventure. With the exploration fraught with mishap and mystery and amid whispers about “curses”, Matthew begins to wonder if his Legend Hunter moniker is worth the damage that could result if the tablets fell into the wrong hands.

When I was first contacted to read and review The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh, I was immediately intrigued. Ancient Egypt, mummies, treasure, and curses have always been a fascination of mine, so I jumped at the opportunity to request an early copy. The detail with which the dig site, underground catacombs, burial chamber and subsequent riches were described made me feel as if I were standing next to Matthew and Cal as part of the team.

I was a little concerned with this being the second book in the series that there would be gaps in the story or the characters because I had not yet read City of Gold. I needn’t have worried, however, as Arnold has crafted her narrative to focus on the present adventure. Don’t get me wrong, the team’s previous exploits are still mentioned in the context of the story, but with just the right amount of filler. At no time did I feel lost or left out of an inside joke because of a plot hole.

If you like action-packed adventure books that’s that will keep you reading well into the wee hours, I would recommend The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh. After this introduction to the Matthew Connor series, I am considering picking up a copy of City of Gold, as well as any future books in the series.

I dig books about archaeology. It’s been a dream of mine to visit some of the ancient cities and pyramids that have been uncovered, and I couldn’t wait to join these character’s in their adventure.

The story begins with Alex, an Egyptologist, who discovers a secret in the sand that could be the end of mankind if it falls into the wrong hands.. Mathew Connor instantly comes to mind when she realizes she needs people she can trust to help her uncover and protect it. They have worked together before and she feels she can trust him. Mathew is excited to join her and brings with him two trusted friends, Cal and Robyn, who’ve also been on expeditions with him before. The excitement of the adventure is dimmed by the reality of what they might uncover and what it might mean for mankind. But they can’t help but be thrilled as tunnels are discovered, tombs are opened, and things long lost are now found. History will be changed.

Not having read the first book, City Of Gold, I still didn’t have any trouble reading this, the second book in the Mathew Connor series. The author filled me in at appropriate points about past connections and events without slowing down my reading enjoyment. But I’d still recommend reading the previous book first. You don’t want to miss the fun of discovering these characters and seeing how they came to be where they are now.

I had a good feeling about this book going in. What I didn’t expect was the nail biting suspense. If it’s not tunnels collapsing, it’s flooded chambers and lethal cobras. Not to mention others who might want they uncover. I could picture this on the big screen. The darkness under the desert. The chill of opening hidden chambers. Being trapped with snakes all around you. No idea if help will come in time. Yep, it would be a great movie.

Each character tells their story but you won’t get confused. I quickly came to know them and easily recognized who was narrating. Cal, especially. He’s a wise cracker and made me chuckle in between the dangerous events. And the author did it just right as it helped me to understand each character’s motivations and reactions. Led to a much deeper read for me.

Mysteries, action, adventure, danger, and genuine character’s await you inside this well researched and fun book. You’ll quickly become immersed in it and reach the end feeling satisfied yet wanting more.

I received a complimentary copy. My review is voluntarily given.

A woman from Matthew’s past calls him up and invites him to come to Egypt where she is working on an archaeology site. She has found an ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic map that promises to lead to a pharaoh’s tomb and the Emerald Tablets. Matthew has been searching years for the Emerald Tablets and can’t refuse her invitation.

Matthew takes with him to Egypt his two best friends Robyn Garcia and Cal Meyers. Robyn and Cal have both worked with Matthew on more than one dig. When Matthew first approaches both Robyn and Cal about going with him they both hesitate to go for reasons of their own.

Robyn has always wanted to visit Egypt so after given it some thought she realizes that she will just have to push past her reasons for not going because there is no way she is going to miss out a chance of a lifetime.

With knowing that he could lose the love of his life Cal can’t pass up going either as he loves traveling the world, going on adventures and working on digs. This is who he is.

After arriving in Egypt they soon learn that they are not the only ones that are searching for the Emerald Tablets. Danger is lurking around every corner. Cal is worried about the curses that it is said every tomb may hold if they are disturbed that could put their lives in danger. The curses are said to be myths but Cal may not be too far from the truth.

Once I picked up The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh I couldn’t put it down. I had to keep reading until I finished it. I had to know what was going to happen next. The author knows how to give you little clues here and there you know just enough at one time to keep you hanging on and not giving you all the information at one time. When I was reading The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh I could see it in my head as if I was one of the characters myself.

I would recommend The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh to fans of action, adventure, suspense, and mystery or anyone who loves ancient Egyptian.

This originally appeared at The Irresponsible Reader.
---
Noted thrill-seeker, adventurer and archaeologist in the Indiana Jones mold, Matt Connor, is contacted by a former colleague with a more-than-tempting offer: she's pretty sure that she's on the trail of a fascination of Matt's -- the Emerald Tablets -- and would he like to help look for them? Matt jumps at the chance and persuades Dr. Alexandria Leonard to let him bring his two friends along -- they've come along on many of his previous escapades and will be a helpful addition to this one, too.

He just has to convince them to come. Following the three of them being compelled to find the lost City of Gold, they've plunged themselves into their very tame careers and personal lives and away from excitement. Matt convinces them to come along (or the book would've been much shorter), and they head to Egypt a couple of days later. Keeping things very secret from just about everyone, of course, because these Emerald Tablets have great power -- we're not told anything about this power, just that no one wants it to fall into the wrong hands. When people first started talking about them in those terms, I rolled my eyes, until I realized that this was a world in which that was a thing -- tablets have power, the Ark of the Covenant probably took out a bunch of Nazis and Bobby probably found an ancient tiki that carried a curse. Once I figured out that was the kind of book I was reading, things made a little more sense. We are told almost nothing else about the Tablets, but from the way everyone acts about them (at least everyone that believes in them), you can tell they're a pretty big deal.

Once they arrive, things start to good poorly for the expedition -- and not in small ways, but they struggle through it all (mostly). The Tablets are not easily found -- if they even exist, that is. But there's plenty of other archeological finds to focus on -- and some real dangers. Like, say, snakes. Arnold does a great job depicting how snakes can really creep a person out -- even a person safely reading about them on their Kindle thousands of miles away from a single asp. Although at a certain point, they just disappear -- like Hamlin's Pied Piper sauntered through Egypt and every asp left with him. It was a bit disconcerting once they stopped being a concern -- especially in the last chapters where they really could've been a looming presence -- after being everywhere for a while.

This was a fun little adventure story, nothing too intense, nothing too serious, just a nice little diversion (which is good thing). But it could've been better, too.

Early on, when the characters are getting to know each other and get comfortable in Egypt, I really had some trouble with the conversation. Matt's friend and photographer (ugh, don't get me started on the drama surrounding bringing along a photographer), Cal, can serve a great role for the reader. Cal's only a hobbiest when it comes to this stuff from hanging out with his friend -- so he can ask a lot of questions that Arnold can use to plug the reader into the world. It's a thankless task that characters in books and TV shows have to play letting the "stars" show off their expertise. That's all well and good, but man, Cal asked some pretty dumb questions -- and what's worse, characters in and around the field of archeology were way too impressed with others answering simple questions -- questions I could've answered. That was hard to swallow, but easy to get past.

But was really hard to get past -- if only because she kept throwing it in your face -- was the unsubtle emotional stories. Alex's other friend, Robyn, is clearly the love of his life -- and vice versa. But they broke up years ago, while neither has let go. And one or the other of them (and occasionally, Cal) is thinking about this every few pages, without doing anything about it. And when another romance is kindled in Egypt, the melodrama gets hard to swallow -- seriously, in an early draft of Twilight, Stephanie Meyer would've cut this kind of stuff for being "too high school." Unless I'm remembering incorrectly, Arnold can do subtle emotions, this didn't seem to be the same author who wrote Remnants -- and that's a shame.

The pacing of this was disappointing -- we got too much set-up, far too much time establishing the various storylines in Egypt, and then we rushed through the conclusion. I think the heart of the adventure took the last 20 percent of the book! It needed to be longer just to give it the necessary dramatic weight -- and to make the last challenges these characters faced seem more difficult and fraught than a run down to Tim Horton's for donuts and coffee.

The mystery component (for lack of a better word), was far too easy to figure out -- but it wasn't framed as a whodunit, so that's not a slight on Arnold. But it does make you wonder about the powers of observation displayed by Matt, Cal, Alex and the rest. But the villainous characters did their overall job, keeping things moving and providing a way for Matt and the rest to have the adventure the book they needed.

I've given a lot of space here to my relatively minor complaints -- but it takes a bit of space to express them. I did have a good time reading the book. Matt's a fun character -- ditto for Cal. I enjoyed the chemistry between the central characters and could've easily read another hundred pages or more with them and not really noticed or minded. As long as the high school stuff was downplayed -- when that wasn't a focus, I wanted more time with all the characters.

This is the second in a series, but would be a find jumping-on point. I do recommend this for people looking for a light adventure, and can see myself coming back for another go-round with these characters -- I know Arnold can do better than this (and this wasn't bad, it just wasn't as good as it could've been).

A thrilling and fun adventure for lovers of Ancient Egypt and Indiana Jones Thanks to the author’s publicist for offering me this opportunity to participate in the blog tour for the launch of this novel and for providing me an ARC copy that I freely chose to review.
I have read one of Carolyn Arnold’s Police Procedural books (Remnants, Brandon Fisher FBI Book 6) and when I was approached about this book, that is quite different in genre, I was very curious. I know I’m not the only reader fascinated by Ancient Egypt, Archaeology, and the secrets hidden by the pyramids and the hieroglyphs. I still have a copy of Gods, Graves and Scholars: The Story of Archaeology by C. W. Ceram (well, Dioses, Tumbas y Sabios, as I read the Spanish Translation), which I was given as a child, and I remember how much time I spent reading it and imagining that I was there, in Tutankhamen’s Tomb. Of course, the book is quite old now, and I was delighted to be given the opportunity of following an expedition in modern times, and seeing how much things have changed. But some things haven’t, and the magic and the excitement are still there.
This is book 2 in the Matthew Connor Adventure series, and although I can confirm it can be read independently, there are quite a few references to the previous book, City of Gold, so if you’re intending to read the whole series, I’d advise you to start by the first book, as you might otherwise miss some of the surprises. There is enough information about book 1 to get a good sense of the closeness between the friends, the dangers they encountered in their previous adventure, and also to understand what makes them tick.  But when it came to the intricacies of their personal lives, I was curious about how much background I had missed, because, in such matters, nuances are important.
The story is told in the third person from a variety of characters’ points of view. It is Matthew Connor Series, and he is one of the main characters, but the story starts with Alex, an Egyptologist who knew Matthew from before and who calls him when she realises what she has come across. Both of Matthew’s friends, Cal and Robin appear reluctant to join him at first, for different reasons, but they cannot resist the adventure, and they make a great team. Robin is the studious and organised one, and she’s always dreamed of Egypt. Cal is a photographer who loves adventure and is always trying to bring a light touch and a joke to the proceedings, and the fact that he is not knowledgeable about the topic offers the author the perfect excuse to explain the background, both historical and procedural, to their expedition. Matthew is an interesting mixture of intuition, deduction, and determination. He has great instincts even if sometimes he might get side-tracked by his emotions and his flirting with danger.  I know some readers are reluctant to read books where the point of view changes often, but it is well-done here, and it helps keep the mystery and the intrigue, as each character’s personality and insights provide us different clues to what is really going on. It is up to us to put the pieces of the puzzle together and it is great fun.
The book is fast-paced, and it will delight lovers of adventures. If you love Indiana Jones, you will be fascinated by the Emerald Tablets, the lost pharaoh, the snake whisperer, the treasure map, the betrayals, and the many secrets. In an ideal world, I would have loved to know more about the pharaoh and his secrets (he sounds like a fascinating character), and I was much more interested and convinced by the adventure aspect of the story than by the personal relationships and the love stories of the characters. Matthew came across as quite fickle at times, but he is very young (that is more evident emotionally than professionally), and I think his reactions and behaviour are understandable. The three friends go through emotional turmoil, and in all cases, it is related to their profession and their love of adventure, which brings an interesting and realistic aspect to the matter. We are used to adventurers who are either loners, or somehow come across a kindred spirit who loves adventures as much as they do, but rarely do we find a group of friends who know the value of their friendship and appreciate the difficulties of fitting their love for adventure into a ‘normal’ life. None of the main characters are flawless heroes (some hate snakes, there are jealousies, unfunny jokes, superstition, lack of commitment, and lies) and, for me, that is a strength, because it makes them human and easier to identify with.
The author once more shows her skill at research, and the technology used as part of the expedition, the procedures followed, and the setting blend smoothly into the story without delaying the action or going into unnecessarily detailed descriptions. There are clues, red herrings, plenty of suspects, and twists and turns to keep the mystery readers engaged too.
A thrilling and fun adventure that I recommend to anybody who loves the Indiana Jones movies and has always been intrigued by archaeological mysteries. The plot is particularly strong, but the characters are relatable and likeable, and I would love to join them on their next adventure. I am sure you will too.

One of the greatest regrets of my youth is that I spent too much time thinking about a respectable career, and far too much time worrying about how to afford the education behind it. Had I followed my dreams and accepted student debt as the price of indulging my passions, I would have become an archaeologist.

While I vividly remember my first adventures with Indiana Jones, Amelia Peabody and Dirk Pitt, what I remember even more is a warm April afternoon wandering a Grassy Brook creek bed . . . and finding a native arrowhead. There I stood, a stone's throw from all the gaudy trappings of modern Niagara Falls, holding in my hand something that was hundreds of years old. It was exhilarating, and it inspired me in a way that nothing else ever has.

I missed my chance to pursue it as a career, but stories of archaeologists, treasure hunters, and tomb raiders have always been a cornerstone of my library. I know better than most how cheesy and irresponsible they are, but I still love the thrill of discovering history within those stories. When an author blends respectable archaeology with the adventure, I am quick to take notice - and that is the first thing that struck me about The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh by Carolyn Arnold.

This was a solid read that engaged me from the start. Unlike so many books within the genre, Arnold doesn't simply use an archaeological MacGuffin to spark a tale of international intrigue. Instead, archaeology is the foundation of the tale, and a continued focus throughout. Dr. Alexandria Leonard (Alex) indulges us in exhausting excavations and the painstaking cataloguing of artifacts; she cautions against touching items or disturbing their position; and she is aghast at the idea of removing even a few stones from a tomb wall, being more concerned with preservation of the tomb than escape from it. There is nothing reckless about the story - even the villains take proper archaeological precautions (for the most part).

Nicely paced, with plenty of action and adventure, the story here is fantastic. The opening scenes deep inside the tomb, with the tunnel collapse, the long swim, the snakes, and the discovery of a lost tomb that they may not survive to share with the world, were perfectly orchestrated. There are some nice hieroglyphic puzzles and legendary mysteries, and the even if the climax felt a little rushed, it was thoroughly entertaining.

I did feel the drama was a little thick at times, with love triangles and strained relationships leading to far too much moping about and fretting over things. That said, however, I did appreciate that the characters felt real, with lives outside the story and personalities that were more than just their careers. I was a little disappointed that I identified the two main villains right away, but I though Arnold did a stellar job of ensuring I remained unsure about Alex throughout.

What's more, now that I've had the chance to meet Matthew, Robyn, and Cal, I've already ordered a copy of City of Gold so I can see where it all began.

The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh is the second in the Matthew Connor series of books by author Carolyn Arnold. Matthew, a renown archaeologist, is contacted by an old friend who is currently working on a dig in Egypt. Having possibly discovered the tomb of a nameless pharaoh, this friend called Alex seeks Matthew’s expertise to join her in what may end up being the discovery of the fabled Emerald Tablets. Not willing to pass up the opportunity of a lifetime that would solidify his reputation, Matthew invites his best friends to tag along for the adventure. With the exploration full of mishaps and mystery and amongst whispers about “curses”, Matthew begins to wonder if the name he's made for himself is worth the damage that could be the result if the tablets fell into the wrong hands.
When I was first contacted to read and review The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh, I was immediately intrigued. Ancient Egypt has always been a fascination of mine, I loved Ancient Egypt when we often spoke of it in History classes as I grew up, and wont lie, who doesn’t love the mummy films from back in 1999 with Brendan Fraser. So I jumped at the opportunity to give it a read and give an honest review. The detail in which the dig site, underground catacombs, burial chamber and subsequent riches were described made me feel as if I were standing next to Matthew and Cal as part of the team, Carolyn has a way of doing that so it was so easy to sit back in a chair and sink into the story.
Like other time before now, I was a little concerned with this being the second book in the series that there would be gaps in the story or the characters because I had not yet read City of Gold and maybe I'd end up confused and lost. I shouldn’t have even worried because although it's the second adventure, Carolyn crafted the narrative to focus on the present adventure, although we do hear about the team’s previous adventures/activities together as they are mentioned in the context of the story, but they are served with just the right amount of filler (which did make me want to read the previous book so badly.) There was never a moment I was lost or confused due to the referencing of previous encounters between the characters.
If you like action-packed adventure books that’s that will keep you reading well into the early hours or in my case, right through them, I have no issue in recommending The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh to you. After this introduction to the Matthew Connor series, I am seriously considering picking up a copy of City of Gold, as well as any future books in the series. This is my 3rd time reading work by Carolyn and by the looks of it, its definitely wont be the last.
Its an easy 5/5 from me, definitely even higher if my scale went that high.

The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh by Carolyn Arnold is the 2nd book in her Matthew Connor series. Matthew Connor, our hero, is a famed Archaeologist, whom we tend to look at like a modern day Indiana Jones. I am happy to say, that I really enjoyed The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh. This is a fun series, as Arnold takes us on an adventure to Egypt, under the dig sites, allowing us a real feel of what archaeologist do, as well as giving us excitement, danger, murder, mystery.

Matthew is contacted by a former colleague Alex , an archaeologist, who had found a major discovery on a dig. She calls Matthew to help her find the Emerald Tablets, which was considered a myth. Matthew agrees to help, and brings with him his friends and partners, Robyn and Cal. Robyn is curator at a museum, and Cal is a photographer.

When they meet Alex, she introduces them to her team. As the adventure begins, things go wrong, with a group of them trapped underground, but also while trying to find a way out, they come across the tomb of a pharaoh, with all the riches. They manage to be rescued, but the expedition is fraught with mishaps, curses, betrayal, distrust and murder.

What follows is an exciting. action packed, edge of your seat adventure that constantly has us in suspense. Just when you think things are over and they are safe to go home; things will take a turn, with some twists along the way. Matthew begins to be concerned that finding the Emerald Tablets may not be worth allowing this powerful tool to be put in the wrong hands. What will Matthew do if he finds those tablets? To tell too much more would be major spoilers. You need to read this book to discover everything for yourself.

Carolyn Arnold has written an amazing story, describing everything in detail, giving us a complete picture of Egypt dig sties, heat, desert, underground tombs, mummies, tunnels, snakes, and all kinds of long lost treasures. I loved Matthew, Alex, Robyn and Cal, and the villains in the story were very well done. I look forward to more from the Matthew Connor Adventure series. Carolyn Arnold has created another winner.

Original review posted on my blog From Ink to Paper

I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is my second Carolyn Arnold book that I have got to read for a review and I am glad that I got this opportunity. I am a huge ancient history buff so this book sounded right up my alley with some mystery, some historical fiction, and cool treasure finds of ancient Egypt! I have not read the first in the series, but you don't need to have read it to understand what is going on. You get a nice quick background of Matthew Connor who is the character from the first novel and off into the story you go.

I like that the story basically takes off right away. You are lured in by this archaeological find of a map that is going to lead Alex to the Emerald Tablets and you are taken along on the adventure with them of unlocking the clues to the location of the tablets. Of course with any great treasure find there is some backstabbing along the way and crazy mishaps that happen, but it wouldn't be an adventure without them!

I thought the characters were pretty good. I got a little annoyed with the weird love triangle thing because it was more like both women liked the guy and the guy liked both but he thought one didn't and the one he thought didn't wouldn't tell him. I felt it took a little away from the storyline just didn't seem necessary. I did route for the characters to find the Emerald Tablets and thought there was some funny parts thrown into the adventure that I liked. I pretty quickly guessed one of the bad guys and so that didn't provide quite the surprise part, however I still liked how it came about and thought it was still a fun twist to the story.

The writing overall was good and the story had a good pace to it, there wasn't way too much detail that you sometimes find in books that have history involved. I had a fun time reading the book and it kept me entertained up until the end. The ending was good, it tied up the story nicely.

This is the second in the new series with protagonist archaeologist and adventurer Matthew Connor. A former colleague, Alex, has stumbled upon an Egyptian hieroglyphic map that is sure to lead them to a pharaoh's tomb and the Emerald Tablets, which (if found) will render humankind the ability to traverse Heaven and Earth and bestow wealth and wisdom upon the possessor. Matthew includes Robyn Garcia and his buddy Cal Myers.

The tale is interwoven with characters that have the means to spend life globe-trotting in search of treasure. Robyn is the curator of the Toronto Egyptian Museum and is in love with Matthew and shortly finds herself in direct conflict with Alex. The narrative is well plotted, moves, and carries a storyline. Descriptions of locations are done well and evoke visions of the desert and the heat, but it doesn't take long before antagonist Reda, the Minister of Egyptian Antiquities, pops up.

Although it was an enjoyable read, I found the plot progression too predictable. Some features in the narrative required suspension of disbelief. Finally, I was disturbed by the climax and left feeling irate by their decision. I suspect I may be one of the few that would disagree with the ending and would love to hear more thoughts on the subject. Does the protection of the world come at too great a cost?

The pacing might have been more suitable for a movie script than a book, reaching Indiana Jones proportions of aggressive, fast-paced male-driven adventure. Recommended for those who enjoy travel, action and adventure, and men's adventures. We were allowed to download this eBook for the author through the publisher, Hibbert & Stiles Publishing Inc. We greatly appreciated the opportunity to read and no monies were exchanged for the review. C E Williams

This is the third book I have read by Arnold and completely different to the previous two. Arnold is known for her crime writing series's featuring Brandon Fisher and Madison Knight. I accepted the offer of reading this book as I completely loved the books I have read previously; they were both definitely 5 stars worthy books! I also, like many individuals I think, have a real interest in Ancient Egypt and mysteries in general. This book gave a feel of a real adventure type book and something any Indiana Jones type lover may really enjoy.

Arnold has kept up on her excellent writing skills in this book as with the previous ones I have read and has also done a really good job of describing everything and the characters. One thing I really enjoy about Arnold's work is that she does a really good job of researching her ideas and the genre she is writing in. This book is no exception to that and it is well thought out and informed.

This is the second book in the Matthew Connor series and I haven't read the first book. Arnold has done another good job here of allowing the reader to jump into a series without reading the previous book/s. The book had a fast paced read to it and it didn't take me long to get into the storyline once in. The storyline is pretty much go from the first pages. All things I like in a good book.

Overall, this was a really good book; fast paced and entertaining. My own personal opinions however, are that I didn't love it just quite as much as the previous books I had read by Arnold. This is definitely not a reason to not pick this one up, I do just love my crime books more. I always appreciate a very well written book and I was still very entertained by this one. I would pick up another book in this series as I am fascinated by mysteries of this type. I look forward to the next book I pick up by Arnold, whichever the series!

As a huge fan of Indiana Jones, I found The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh a real treat to read. Carolyn Arnold’s hero, Matthew Connor is as dashing, intelligent and romantically confused as Indiana Jones always seems to be.

This is the second in the Matthew Connor series and I hadn’t read the first book City of Gold, but it didn’t matter. The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh works perfectly well as a stand alone story.

The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh combines adventure, Egyptology, suspense and romance in a very satisfying way. Matthew dashes off to Egypt at the call of a previous colleague, Alex, who claims to have found the tomb of a pharaoh in which there is a reference to the legendary Emerald Tablets which Connor has been chasing for years.

He takes his friends, Cal (a photographer) and Robyn (who works in antiquities in a museum) with him. All of Arnold’s characters are well fleshed out and you really feel as if you know them by the end of the story – which I won’t reveal.

Their adventures see them trapped deep below ground with snakes and when tragedy strikes one of their number, things begin to unravel.

Arnold throws you into the adventure at breakneck speed but cleverly allows the psychological tension to build between the characters as the pressure of their discovery starts to weigh heavily on them all. Could it be a pharaoh’s curse?

There’s plenty of detail, too, about Ancient Egypt to fascinate the reader and a romantic love triangle which sees Matthew having to choose between the beautiful Robyn, who adores him but with whom things have never worked out, or the equally beautiful Alex, whose reasons for inviting Connor on the expedition may not be as innocent as they seem.

Highly recommended.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and my review is freely given.

The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh by Carolyn Arnold (Matthew Connor Adventure Series Book 2) If you enjoyed City of Gold then you are going absolutely love The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh.

Matthew Connor is back in a new action packed, edge of your seat, treasure hunting mystery. I delved right into this book and I couldn’t put it down, I have always loved Egyptian History and it is clear that Arnold has done her homework on it as well as she really made you feel like you were right there with Matthew and Co as they help out on a archaeological dig of a lifetime.

The fabled Emerald Tablets and the tomb of an unknown Pharaoh sees the dig site leader Alex get in touch with Matthew to convince him to come and join her team, Matthew has long been fascinated by the prospect of finding the Emerald Tables that he needs no persuasion and wrangles Cal and Robyn along for the ride – though they are both still recovering from there brush with death in the previous book – what could go wrong in this one right?

Once in Egypt they meet the others on the dig team and get to work, though there are members that will you dislike and feel they are up to something but you get so wrapped up in the danger and adventure that awaits them in the tomb that you forget why you dislike then until all hell breaks loose!

This really is an action packed adventure that will make you feel you are right in the midst of the the discoveries they make and the danger they get into. I was slightly miffed at the ending, not how it ended more Matthews decision on something (don’t want to spoil it) I can see why he chose to do what he did but still, to actually go through what they did they had to protect the world somehow…

Dont miss the chance to read this fantastic series from Carolyn Arnold.
