Journey to Constellation Station is the rhythmic story of an interstellar train ride that will whisk you into a special part of space - the magical Constellation Station. Hop off the train to gaze through a unique telescope of stars. Stare down Leo the Lion, meet Orion the Hunter, see Pegasus spread his wings, and more!
Lindsay C. Barry grew up in the only town in Pennsylvania. She developed her love of reading and writing at a young age, and even more so when she stumbled upon a magical world called Narnia.
With her mother as her high school English teacher, and drama teacher...and creative writing teacher, writing was ingrained in Lindsay's upbringing. Graduating from The Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Communication, Lindsay started her career in the advertising world where she helped manage accounts.
During an internship, she may or may not have dressed up as a strawberry and run around a baseball field (she was hired after that internship so it was worth it).
Later, Lindsay switched career paths and worked as an executive assistant in an executive search firm. The best day of work was meeting Robert Redford and having him say, "Oh hi Lindsay!"
During her time living in Washington, D.C., Lindsay met her future husband and three years later they welcomed their first son. Two years and two days later, they welcomed their second son (and decided two boys made their family complete).
Now with two boys, two cats, two guppies with ever-changing names and one red Beta fish named Goldie, Lindsay considers herself a Mom-Trepreneur and expert good night story reader.
Her sons' love of trains and outer space and her love of getting them to go to sleep inspired her first children's book, Journey to Constellation Station.
...and she still loves visiting her hometown of Bloomsburg, especially during Fair season where she can be found in line for a potato pancake at the green stand. It's a Bloomsburg thing.
A great book for lovers of trains, stars, great writing, and wonderful illustrations. The lyrical prose will engage your little ones from the first page to the last. A wonderful gift for the holidays!
Rhythmic and soothing--but also entertaining and educational, JOURNEY TO CONSTELLATION STATION is a delight for all.
This darling children's book, JOURNEY TO CONSTELLATION STATION (City Different Books, September 2020) by Lindsay C. Barry (illustrated by Jamin Hoyle) will delight and transport--literally--you and your little(s) to starry landscape.
It's a bit like THE POLAR EXPRESS...a little boy can't fall asleep, he gets his 'ticket' aboard a train and off he goes to discover the nighttime constellations: Leo the lion, Taurus the bull, Scorpius the scorpion, Cygnus the swan, and more.
From a speech-language related point-of-view, I love the active words in JOURNEY TO CONSTELLATION STATION: chug, pulse, shine, dip, glide, curve, swirl. Can you and your child act out these words? Can you move your body around the house or yard this way? This is all good for the vestibular system, which awakens and activates the body in space and may trigger vocalizations.
Also, there's plenty of rhyming and that's key to kids with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) especially. Try practicing what you read in the book by creating your own rhymes.
You can expand the conversation about the night sky, too by talking about how we're all connected --no matter where in the world we are (what culture, nationality, etc.) the wide expanse of the sky connects us--and has throughout history. It's about the power of imagination, science, collective storytelling.
You might try incorporating an activity or craft related to the book. If you have access to a telescope, set it up in the backyard...what constellations can you find? Maybe make a point to find the first star each night or sleep under the stars.
Try making a solar system, or painting/coloring a sheet of paper black (or use black construction paper) and punching holes to resemble stars, hold it ton the light to see your own constellations...really, the possibilities are endless.
I love the illustrations in this story, too. They are done in vivid earth tones of blue, gray, tan, brown, with a pop of yellow. Just taking in this art is transportive and will inspire your own artistic abilities.

Journey to Constellation Station is a sweet imagination of what it'd be like to view the constellations from a travel hub in space. As the main character drifts off to sleep, he is whisked away by train for a journey among the stars. Debut author Lindsay C. Barry introduces readers to different constellations, and Jamin Hoyle's illustrations make the journey a beautiful one. This book is a great fit for young readers who are starting to learn about the night sky. As the book reminds us, looking at the space beyond our own world is a journey any of us can take, just by looking up.
This book quickly became a bedtime favorite, especially with my oldest (5). He loves the rhymes and tracing the constellations. We read this story before bed and he always talks about riding the train to Constellation Station and finding new stars and planets that no one has ever seen. This book is educational, teaching about some of our favorite constellations, but it also encourages so much imagination and imaginative play. We love and HIGHLY recommend this book. Especially if your kid(s) have even a remote interest in outer space.
Love this book! This is our toddler’s favorite bedtime story. Whilst she may be a little too young to understand the constellations, she loves to relate them to the various animals they represent. Great job Lindsay!
Journey to Constellation Station from debut picture book author @lindsaycbarry takes the reader on a nighttime journey from Earth or outer space. As a teacher, I enjoy the journey itself introduces students to words such as meteor, black hole, and satellite. (It does not provide definitions or detailed illustrations.) The rhyming journey brings me to my favorite part, the constellations. Clear and bold illustrations by @branwellington show each constellation with their stars laid out and connected providing the reader a clear visual. This book would be a great addition to a classroom library. #kidlitexchange #kidlit #picturebook #outerspace #constellations

Journey to Constellation Station takes the reader on a special train ride through space to a special part of space called the Constellation Station. Upon arriving, you receive a close up view of the constellations. Each constellation is beautifully illustrated and the reader learns the name of the constellation and can view the star pattern within the illustration.
Author Lindsay C. Barry wrote this book in such a way that young children, becoming interested in space, can learn about the night sky in simple language. Jamin Hoyle’s illustrations are beautiful and fit the writing style of the author. Jamin’s illustrations can help the reader visualize the full picture when just looking at the star pattern does not.
I would recommend this book for any parent, elementary classroom or library. Having this book within reach when children begin to wonder will help guide them and answer their questions. The only thing I personally wish this book had was a visual map of the night sky to help point children to a starting point to see these amazing sights. If you don’t know where to look, it is hard to know what you are looking for.
