Third Knock the Charm

Rate this book
When fate knocks, answer the door. Unless it knocks three times. Then pretend you didn't hear it.

Nora Ashcroft knows all too well that life is full of trouble when you can speak to the dead.

When she accidentally lets in a dark entity to the house she shares with Ruby, it's up to her to banish the who-knows-what before the rest of Eastwind devolves into complete chaos.

If she hopes to succeed, she'll need a special kind of assistance, and, unfortunately, the best man for the job is also the last witch in town she wants to spend time with . . .

Nova Nelson grew up on a steady diet of Agatha Christie novels. She loves the mind candy of cozy mysteries and has been weaving paranormal tales since she first learned handwriting. Those two loves meet in her Eastwind Witches series, and it's about time, if she does say so herself.

Wasn't quite sure of the series but now I'm a bit hooked. As I'm writing this I'm currently listening to book 4 and it's definitely starting to be an addictive series. I love a short audio time book series that I can listen between longer and offer heavier books. Love the paranormal small town feel to it

Honestly I'm only giving this three stars because I liked the first two. This series has seemingly deteriorated and I didn't enjoy this installment.

I really liked the romance in the first two, and the way Third Knock the Charm turns everything on its head and creates a love triangle with a completely unnecessary player drives me nuts. The whole premise of this one was just... not at all necessary I guess.

As cozy mysteries go, this might have been the first one in the middle of any series I've read where the focus isn't murder, and that in and of itself was very interesting. The premise of history could have been good, but it lacked anything in terms of substance or relevance to the story.

I'd hope this is kind of a one-off, but honestly I liked the second book way less than the first, and this third one I liked the least. Third Knock the Charm was the last book in the series I got for free, and honestly I'm not motivated to find out more. If I'm going for a thirteen book paranormal cozy mystery series, I like the premise of the Brimstone Witch series way more. I don't plan on continuing with the Eastwind Witches series unless I can get the next books free.

Oh sweet baby jackalope!

Nova Nelson has upped her game again in this third Eastwind adventure. Nora’s powers continue to unfold in new and interesting ways. Naturally that means she’s taking more chances and getting herself into more trouble and some seriously tight situations. Situations she’s only vaguely optimistic about how to resolve.

At this point in the series I’m totally addicted to the world of Eastwind. Nelson does a great job of transferring thought to paper, giving us characters we want to know and a world we wish we could visit. Love, love, love Nora and Grim!

I received an advance reader copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

An Eastwind mystery sans murder.

This one is a little harder to catergorise, it didn't feel quite like 'filler,' but more like a set up for things later in the series.

I'm not sold that the 'subplot' which seemed to become the point of this book was entirely necessary, but  it leaves a strong sense of being the "this is why" for either character or plot being set up for later books. Either that, or a means  to a villain arc  - only time will tell.

There was some really great dialogue, a lot of it between Nora and Grim, and some of it actually laugh-out-loud, or at least snort-laugh worthy! And the creative, alternative, 'swearing' is used liberally and appropriately - keeping the books 'clean' for those who object to the real-world version, but allowing room for exclamations of profound shock, dismay, anger, frustration and shock, that are usually fulfilled by more colourful language. And given the mis-/adventures, and personalities of the characters, those very creative pseudo swear words appear liberally. It's a clever device, and stops the story from falling into the improbable scenario where no-one swears, not even in the most trying of circumstances - plausible for one character, maybe two, but completely unrealistic in a novel's, or series, worth (which has been frustrating in other 'Cosies.')

This book is certainly different from the first two. The mystery plot is secondary to the interpersonal, and also to emphasising more of Nora's 'past' personality, and character. Examining, again, why she was the way she was, whether or not that served her very well, and how many of those patterns or traits she wants to carry into her life in Eastwind. The latter process seems somewhat belaboured. As if Nova Nelson is holding up a large red arrow saying, "Look! This is REALLY it. This is where Nora decides that she can start fresh. This is where she CHOOSES to make different choices!"

Unfortunately this seems to only apply to her personal life, as her tendancy to not look before she leaps is seen as a frustrating virtue? At least it moves the plots forward, a trait that is also commented upon in book by other characters.

Once again, her ignorance of the intracacies of the social and even the basic infrastructure of the Realm of Eastwind is a cause for consternation, both for her, and for her friends and partners in mis-adventure. While this is great from the reader's perspecitive - we learn about things as she does - it makes things more difficult for her.

The fact that no-one has thought to sit her down and simply explain the basics of the social structure, Power structure, or even point out the fundamentals of civil life in Eastwind is a bit bemusing. Yes, she has Grim to fill in some of the blanks, sometimes even before she blunders; but his knowledge is general, 'common knowledge,' which is very useful to Nora (because *being* common knowledge, she has no other access to it.) But he has also spent most of his two lives in the Deadwood, there are a great many things he just can't help her with.

Constant surprise at her ignorance seems unwarranted when no-one has sought to teach her; especially as there are all manner of amenities, and dangers, of which she is completely unaware. Her time being  primarily spent between Ruby True, and learning about her Fifth Wind Powers, and work at the 24 hour diner.

In fairness, we are reminded toward this end of the book, that she has only been in the Realm of Eastwind for a little under 5 months.

Nora's mentor also places great stock on their Insight and Intuition, and beyond their lessons in their own branch of Magic, seems to expect her pupil to figure it out, perhaps as Ruby had to. It seems that a part of the plot of the Nora Ashcroft books is the old trope that as no-one has told her what is, and isn't possible, she isn't bound by those - sometime arbitrary - limits. Her ignorance sets her free from what other people believe is im/possible.

That doesn't help her very much when no-one has explained how the Library works.

Behind the interpersonal and introspective plot, behind the mystery that provides the framework for the story, is the far more interesting, and for Nora, worrying, development. Set up as an obstacle, or even beauraucratic annoyace, and then dropped til almost the end of the book, and it is the 'subplot you're supposed to forget.'

The Coven is showing interest in Nora.

There have previously been hints, and some explanation, of the workings of the Coven. They certainly keep cropping up.

There has been much made, but little said of the reasons for the change of power from the Weres to the Witches in Ruling Eastwind, and it's been more than implied that the change in rule was not peaceful; that there is still resentment, and that the Weres feel as if they are made to feel less-than. Bad blood remains.

The Witches are in charge in Eastwind, and control the Council, and the Coven control the Witches.

The subtext also implies that the Coven's hand is not a light one in the ruling of Eastwind, including the very many Laws governing the Practice of Magic, including who may, or may not practice, where they must learn, etc. They control the magical practicioners, though they can't control the inherently magical - unless they want to practice magic.

The sudden interest of a tutor from the Mancer Academy in Nora's status as 'untrained' - coincidentally, quite soon after she orders her Wand - and the rush to get her tutored and trained in the 'right way' of doing things seems fortuitous. Nora's magical ignorance has been a source of frustration for her.

Ruby True does explain that Nora's  realtively untroubled-by-the-Coven magical existance so far, is atypical for a Witch new to Eastwind. And that the 'hands off' approach, is likely the Coven's attempt at not "scaring her off." They desperately want someone with Nora's skills in their fold - and Ruby has made her disinterest in, and contempt for, the Coven very clear. As well has her refusal to boost their power and control by giving them access to her own Fifth Wind Powers.

The whole thread of the (apparently) sudden interest in Nora by the governing Coven is an alarming development in the plot, one that is carefully explained as being highly beneficial to the ruling Witches of Eastwind, and perhaps not so much for Nora.

The authority of the Coven has been in the background of all three books thus far, and Ruby's general mistrust and antipathy almost written off as being the result of being an outsider - to Eastwind, and of being the only Witch of her kind in the Realm until Nora appeared; it' also suggested that the clash stems from her sometimes disagreeable, often contrary temprament.

But this time Ruby's dislike and disapproval are explored a little further.

Nora definitely seems to under-appreciate the change in the Coven's approach to her.
Another lapse is shown when she, uncharacteristically for the former business powerhouse, seems to forget - never sign a contract under time pressure - take it home, and read all the fine print, (a truism in any situation.) Something I suspect she may regret.

There is also the blink and you miss it bombshell reference to Tanner's parents!

I also like the continued building of the pro- women aspects of Eastwind, from the Matriarchal Werewolves, to the 'more powerful than she let's on' Ruby, and the list of characters who are in positions of power, or who have Power themselves, and are women/female. There are, again, several points at which the book wears its heart on its sleeve, and places women in charge. Including the public humiliation of a pair of sexually aggressive teenage boys, and another character dressing someone down for treating a woman poorly - clearly stating that she doesn't have to 'be with'/'belong to' anyone, that mistreatment of women is catergorically wrong, and self-evidently inexcusable.

There is the unavoidable feeling that this book is setting up later books. Whether that be the creation of friction, the difference between who Nora was, and who she wants to become, her connection to the Deadwood, or the beginning of a villainous charcter arc? This book is not like the others.

The mystery is definitely the secondary plot. Nora's personal life - past and present - is the primary focus, and the  sense of this book, 'dealing with it,' is unmissable.

There is also a a great deal of, almost hidden, exposition and the unshakable sense that the whole book is really burying the lede.

Why?

I really hate love triangles. Yes, hate. And I can honestly say where this went does not surprise me but not a fan. And her choices / actions just means more pain down the road. I like romance not angst in my cozy mysteries. If I wanted angst, I'd read a romance novel. Now I'm going to be waiting for the other shoe to drop, and the problem is that I don't like Donovan because we were made to not like him early on. Nora is annoying enough with her "hang ups" about relationships and feelings.

Eastwind Witches:
Eastwind Witches - I love these kinds of witches; nothing mean or nasty but tough when needed. My friend had these three books and we spent a day reading and laughing about the characters and the happenings. Funny, entertaining and well written, the stories are strong enough to keep the reader immersed in the pages, but with a simple storytelling style. The characters grow as the pages fly by and there's no Stupid Formula, just plain entertainment. Surprise, no vulgar language or cussing. Plus, you'll love Ted; sorry no spoilers. Little editing needed but not much.

Crossing Over Easy #1 - I love these kinds of witch stories. This is our first book by this author; my friend and I read her copies during one of our get-together weekends. We both had fun with them. Easily and quickly read, COE was funny and interesting. The characters are funny and entertaining; the story line was entertaining; and the dialog and actions weren't of the stupid variety. Even without a friend's comments, this book is good for relaxation or something simple but entertaining. Did I mention the book was entertaining. OK, I'm not funny, but Nova is a lot. 5*

Death Metal #2 - This book starts three months after Crossing Over Easy ended. We loved the dialog; it was almost as if we were doing the talking. Well written, funny and entertaining, the pages flew by as we laughed our way to the end. The characters are filling out more, including Eastwind, and their dialog is extremely entertaining. Nora is discovering more about herself and the perks and dangers of being a Fifth Wind witch. 5*

Third Knock The Charm #3 - This book begins two weeks after Death Metal ends. This time no one is killed, but many other things are instead. Funny, entertaining and this time filled with lots of sexual tension. My favorite character is the Library, which I wish all readers had access to one of their own. Ms. Nelson writes well, describes vividly and add humor in abundance. My friend and I just laughed ourselves silly about the message of sexual harassment is wrong, but physical assault is OK. Nope, we didn't disagree on half of that message, but we come from a time of real sexual harassment where slapping hands or faces was a must; now it's a crime to defend yourself. 5*

Queso de los Muertos #4 - Another well written, intriguing but quickly read Eastwind tale. Fast paced, entertaining and a touch of sexual tension, this is a good addition to the series. It's nice the author doesn't use vulgar language or explicit sex, but uses humor and well thought out storylines. The characters remain interesting and their dialog believable. There's no stupid formula in this series. I could use a bowl of queso and handmade chips. I contacted the author to review her books since I enjoyed the first three. 5*

Psych Out #5 - Wow, we've a few twists to the plot! This book isn't a cliffhanger, but it will fun to find out what's happening with Nora in the next book. Well written, intriguing and with a few kinks added to mix, along with more development of the characters. The plot is really intense near the end of the story and there's a few laughs along the way. Plus, the sexual tension is still running amok. 5*

Gone Witch #6 - Imagine the sexual tensions with three guys available, poor Nora. Another well written, fast paced plot filled with intrigue and suspense. Along with humor, there's a build up for a bad future ahead for Eastwind. Changes are already taking place, especially with several characters. Once started, this story was hard to put down. 5*

Love Spells Trouble #7 - What a neat spell, but what terrible residuals. Another fun and magical book. There's all kinds of characters from the past, along with trouble for the future. The storyline was pretty good and there's plenty of sexual tension and then some. There's plenty of intrigue and suspense to go with the tension and the humor. One of the characters leaves and I hated to see him go, but the ending still works just fine. 5*

Storm A-Brewin' #8 - Storm picks up a week later from when Love Spells Trouble ended. This is a very good story! All our favorite and not so favorite characters are dealing with a lot of hatred with certain businesses being targeted. The story mirrors the reverse discrimination that's so prominent in the news, but at least the book is interesting and with humor. 5*

Nora, Tanner and Ruby go to Ezra's Magical Outfitters to order a wand for Nora. He rock is staurolite to help keep her grounded and Ezra has never put one in a wand before and he's looking forward to the challenge. It will be quite a while before it's ready though. Nora is going to start taking lessons from Ruby as a Form Wind Witch and also a tutor for the basics. She's already done things she shouldn't have been able to do and it looks like she's going to be a powerful witch, but she needs training. Before long, she's at it again. She was sidetracked and didn't pay attention to the three knocks before she opened the door at Ruby's. A powerful wind, possibly a demon, whirls through the house and Ruby has to act quickly to get it out. Unfortunately it seems to have taken all the water and there were dead plants from Ruby's to the Deadwoods. This keeps happening in different places and the water is drying up and killing plants. Not good in a magical town at all! Nora and Donavon, who doesn't like her at all, have to try and expel this spirit and apparently it's not going to be easy. This book is well written and has some great snark and laugh out loud moments. I loved it and am still looking forward to reading more of this series!

“What’d he say?” “He said every moment of our lives is the beginning of the end.”

Nora Ashcroft has got to get her life(death) in Eastwind together or she’ll never be able to help anyone. Now legal co-owner of Medium Rare, she and Tanner are dancing around boundaries between work and their budding romance that everyone sees but her. And now, the real world encroaches as she gets harassed by two young guys out to see just how far they can get.

The rules is not to open a door when someone knocks three times, but distracted Nora does just that and consequences are stiff if someone doesn’t make peace with what arrives. And all the while Nora tries to placate everyone in the picture, including Ruby True, her landlady. Nora finds herself doing what she knows best so she can go back to living her (dead) life. Question is, does she actually know how to do it?

This cosy had me laughing, but also crying at times. The scene of her helping this spirit find peace is very powerful. Nove Nelson’s characters just keep getting better and better. I can hardly wait for the next in the series. Highly recommended 5/5

This book just goes to show that you don't need a freshly minted corpse in chapter 1 for it to be a great read, in fact no dead bodies in chapter 2, 3 or 4 either. I shall go no further because of spoilers! Although Nora loves her life in Eastwind, there are quite a few people who are not fans of hers, people (or creatures) who do not think she is good enough because she has not had formal witch training, or that she has full control of her powers, or that she even knows the extent of her powers. And then there are people who a generally prejudiced in one way or another and will use others as scapegoats, but when a trail of seriously dehydrated plant life leads from Ruby True's house into the Deadwoods, there is no denying that Nora is somehow responsible, and she is! And she had better put it right before either the town goes into meltdown or the citizens become a lynch mob.

Another brilliant offering from Nova Nelson, totally enjoyable, totally unput-downable. Love that the relationship between Tanner and Nora is taking off, but Donovan.... well that just gets you right there and I bleed for him, ooo, what a bummer! Cannot wait for the next book.

Nora, the new Fifth Wind Witch of Eastwind, is slowly settling in and finally allowing Tanner to - secretly - be her boyfriend. But, of course, her life has another major crisis when she opens the door to a demon, who sucks everything dry...
As she - and some of the others - believe it may be her fault she tries to stop the demon. With surprising help from unexpected sources she tries to fix the situation.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. I liked this book maybe even better than the others so far, as here we have the real Nora, fighting to figure out what is right and what is best to do for her and her friends, although personally I would have preferred a different outcome.

I love this series and can’t wait for the next book. The characters are multidimensional and for a bunch of werewolves, witches, and fairies they are surprisingly human.

Nora has ordered her wand and is learning witchy stuff from Ruby the only other fifth wind which in Eastwind. Unfortunately because she’s distracted, when there are three knocks on the door, Nora opens it even though she’s been told not to answer three knocks, she inadvertently lets in a demon that is sucking all the water from everything. She and Donavon have to work together to get rid of this entity and fast!

I received this book free in exchange for an honest review. This is the 3rd book in the series! I loved it. Nora is still learning to be a 5th wind witch by Ruby her landlady and only other 5th wind witch in town. While doing her lessons with Ruby someone knocks on the door 3 times before Ruby can stop her Nora has already opened the door. When all the plants and lakes start drying up Nora must get to the bottom of it enlisting Donovan who is Tanners best friend and who she thinks hates her! It was a quick fun read. I highly recommend this book and this series! I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

Nora is still working on becoming a trained witch. Well, at least working with Ruby. But it seems more and more like she might need to take classes at the local academy as well. Especially since there seems to be a demon loose in town. But figuring out how to solve the problem means doing something that Nora really, really would rather not do.
I was so charmed by this series for the lack of a love triangle. It seems like every witch-cozy-mystery series has one and they are one of my least favorite plot points. Now... sigh. I will keep reading the series for at least another book but I'm really hoping it will be cleared up quickly.

Nora forges ahead in this book in several vital areas, but is also forced into extreme danger by a grave error in judgement.

This book has a mix of good and bad developments that require Nora's involvement in order to set things right and save the town from a dark and deadly entity. There are hard and heartbreaking choices to be made here and I'm not sure I agree with Nora's choice. To choose one is to hurt another. I'm torn. There are many more books in this series. I'm going to stick with Nora and Eastwind to follow along on her journey. She still has a lot to learn in many ways and she is already a formidable, if untrained, Fifth Wind witch.

Things are finally heating up between Nora, a Fifth Wind witch, and Tanner, her secret crush for months and new business partner! But three knocks on Nora's door precedes devastaion for a lot of Eastwind and it is up to Nora to find the solution before it is too late. Join Nora on her latest adventure to banish the danger presently wreaking havoc across town. As always, Nova Nelson delivers a delightful, witty mystery full of adventure and repressed sexual tension! I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I love this series. Much like the two previous books in the series, once started I couldn't put this book down. Even though this is the third book in the series it's just as good as the previous two. The storyline is strong with great characters and included some laugh out loud moments. if you enjoy a cozy mystery with witches and other paranormal beings then give this series a read, I'm positive you will enjoy it. This book is just as good as the ones before it. I only gave it a four because I was disappointed in the end. Don't get me wrong; I understand it, just thought it should go a different way. I expect something amazing will happen in Nora's future though. As usual she gets herself into a big mess and has to find a way out of it. You will love her attitude and the whole story that goes with it. While this can be read alone, you will get the most from it if you start with the first in series. i love this town and the people in it.

Another great story by Nova Nelson. Third Knock the Charm kept me interested, reading, and let's not forget....laughing! Nora's relationship with her familiar, Grim, gets me laughing every time. All the characters are so well written, I'd swear I've met them all. And, oh my, if I ever come across a town like East Wind, I'm moving there. :) I cannot recommend this series enough. It's one of my very few favorite series. I was given a free copy in hopes I would give a review. This was an easy one.

This book was such fun; I could not put it down until it was finished. Nova is a really great character. The town of Salem is definitely strange and has quite a few interesting non-human’s residing there. This is the first book in this series that I have read. Will now go and read the two books prior to this one. Nora and Tanner are just starting their romantic adventures, cannot wait to see how this progresses in the future as Donavan looks on. Grim, Nora’s familiar is sarcastic and funny. Looking forward to reading the first two books and the books following this one.

Third Knock the Charm (Eastwind Witches Cozy Mysteries Book 3) was written by Nova Nelson. Nora should be further along with her studies. However, instead of charging people to help them with their ghost issues, as Ruby did, she's decided to work as at Tanner's diner. So, she's a bit distracted. And she accidentally lets in an evil entity into her new home. One that is sucking the water out of everything that it crosses. To deal with this entity, she'll have to turn to the one guy that isn't all that into her.
Overall, this novel had an interesting plot and was a good read.

I really like this series, the world building is fun and interesting. The mysteries are cute and relatively low stakes but the series was ruined for me in this book since I can’t stand a cheater and that’s what our main character did it was an instant dislike moment like you have an unofficial boyfriend that you kiss and now you’re kissing his best friend?! That’s such yucky behavior, in the very first book they talked about how bad being a cheater is and now she does this? Not a fan. I’m not sure if I’ll keep reading or not, it was a such a cute series 😩

I really liked this book - the series has become addictive! I love the characters and the predicaments that Nora's fledgling magic land her in...and the creative use of the words "unicorn swirls" cracks me up every time - an insider joke that you will have to buy the book to find out about! Interesting twist in her love life - I do have a favorite, so am looking forward to seeing what the next book brings.

Tension!

This third book about Nora Ashcroft is different but in a good way. There is lots of tension in this story from the one between Nora and Tanner but to Nora and everyone else. It must be the Fifth Witch thing Nora has going on but things take over when something starts drinking all the water out of things. Now Nora has to figure out what it is and fix it. Come along for the ride and find out what it is plus why it came to be.

The third book in the series continues the adventures (misadventures?) of Nora, Grim, and Tanner in the witchy community of Salem. Shapeshifters, elves, pixies, all sorts of magical creatures, and witches from the four elements combine to bring a fun, quick read full of snarky humor.

I received an ARC of the book , and am willingly leaving my honest opinion. I liked it so much I also bought a copy!

I'd say "Poor Nora", but she does get into situations without listening to others. When she inadvertently lets a dark force into Ruby's home, she has to banish it before it does who knows what. The only caveat, she has to work with the last person in Eastwind who would want to help her. It's full of laugh out loud moments, telepathically communicating familiars, and a little romance. What a fun read!

The third book in Nova's Eastwind witches, "Third Knock the Charm" has Nora taking some witchcraft lessons from Ruby when there's three knocks on the door and she accidentally opens it. A demon enters and Ruby sends it away but now everything in its path is drying up. Nora must find out what kind of demon it was, who sent it, and how to get rid of it.

I enjoyed reading this book and getting to know more of the characters.
