Lauren Carr is the international best-selling author of the Mac Faraday, Lovers in Crime, and Thorny Rose Mysteries—over twenty titles across three fast-paced mystery series filled with twists and turns!
Book reviewers and readers alike rave about how Lauren Carr’s seamlessly crosses genres to include mystery, suspense, romance, and humor.
Lauren is a popular speaker who has made appearances at schools, youth groups, and on author panels at conventions. She lives with her husband, and three dogs on a mountain in Harpers Ferry, WV.
Probably would've enjoyed this more if I didn't listen to the audio book version. The narrator made the hero and other males sound kind of like hicks and older than they were. Still, it was an entertaining read.
This was a page turner and the main reason was the lead character, Chris Matheson. Chris is silver haired with a touch of auburn remaining, in his early fifties, retired FBI. He is currently living with his mother, Doris, and has two daughters, Katelyn and Emma. His wife died, killed in a terrorist attack overseas. He also has a goofy German Shepherd, a former police dog wounded in action, now retired like Chris, that can open car doors, battle with Chris over what radio station they're going to listen to in the car -Chris prefers classical music when Sterling isn't pressing buttons with his snout to change it to the country western station - and, oh, Sterling also plays poker with the best of them! Yes, that's right, poker! He wins too! Smart dog and he really adds to the story. A couple of times I was laughing out loud at his antics.
Several years ago a young girl, Sandy Lipton, and her unborn child disappeared. People blamed Chris even though he was cleared of any involvement. He left home, did a stint in the Armed Forces, was actually a Ranger, and ended up with the FBI. Now he's home and determined to find out what happened to Sandy. He has help from his book club, whose members call themselves the Geezer Squad. They are all retired law enforcement and each has a special skill to bring to the table.
Then there's Chris's former love, Helen Clarke. She's a lieutenant with the West Virginia State Police. She and Chris still have feelings for one another and reconnect when he comes home. Helen is now divorced with a daughter, Sierra, who takes an immediate liking to Chris, Doris, and of course, Sterling.
Rodney Bell, Chris's one time best friend and now Sheriff of the county, is determined to pin something, anything, on Chris and put him behind bars. His hatred for Chris stems from the fact they applied to the FBI together but only Chris was accepted. Chris finds out later that Rodney has always been jealous of Chris. Rodney's father was a drunk and abusive while Chris had a loving home, was popular in school, and excelled where Rodney failed.
This was a fast paced thriller that I couldn't put down. The author did an excellent job with a large cast of characters, but especially Chris. I was sold on him from the get go. While he's managed to weather the storms life threw at him, he's remained positive, he's a wonderful father and son, and a top notch investigator. I really enjoyed the mystery in the book and the fact there was also a serial killer aspect to add to the suspense.
This was my first time reading this author but it won't be my last. The snappy dialogue, the characters involved, the humor, makes me wish I could go straight from book one to book two. Hopefully I won't have too long to wait!
Oh, and I almost forgot to mention all this action takes place during an ice storm! Hence, the title! Ice!
Ice by Lauren Carr has such a cool cover, but it is her stories that make her a must read author for me. I was hooked right out of the gate, with the sweet and fun kids, the retired service dogs, a female rabbit named Thor, who thinks she’s a dog, a book club of retired law enforcement officers who love reading mysteries and suspense novels, then tearing them apart…but the book club segued to so much more.
Lauren Carr includes so many wonderful elements in her stories, and makes each one a separate and unique experience.
Doris…I know Chris is the main character and all the others are just as important to the story and lovable (or hateable) in their own way…but, Doris, a manipulative mother with a magic touch.
And Sterling, a German Shepherd forced to retire because he couldn’t pass a psych evaluation. Goofy? I just think he has tons of personality.
Lauren Carr also has a way with dialogue, snappy and fun, filling me with chuckles and laughs, even as we work to solve the murders and mysteries.
“Bad news, Bell.”
“Matheson’s lawer’s here,” the deputy sheriff said with a sigh.
“Worse. His mother.”
Rodney’s eyes were as wide as the deputy’s when he looked across the table at him. “You called your mother?”
Chris Mattheson is 46 years old. To some he is old, to others he is young. Depends on which group of characters he happens to be hanging with. The entire scene is hilarious, but I just wanted to give you a taste. Don’t mess with Doris!
Lauren Carr’s books are always hard for me to rate. I consider them cozy mysteries over the heavy thriller and suspense stories I read. Most of the time I rate cozies in the 3 to 4 range. I love my books darker and grittier…BUT I could not put the book down and the cast of characters and the storyline I feel are above and beyond the norm, and I can hardly wait to read more, so 5 stars it is.
I am so excited to have A Chris Matheson Cold Case Mystery series to add to my Lauren Carr reading list.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Ice by Lauren Carr.
Ice by Lauren Carr, starts off a brand new series that deals with solving cold cases. In this particular story the past and present collide when retired FBI agent Chris’s reputation is at stake again for a crime he did not commit some 24 years ago. In author Carr fashion, we have several past and present crimes that have taken place that may or may not be related. This story kept the pages turning quickly as there were a lot of possible suspects and way too many victims and their families whose lives that had been touched by the violence and now demanded justice.
I have enjoyed author Carr’s previous series, so I was excited to dive into this one. Chris is a widower with three young girls and living with his mom. I liked how he and his mom looked after each other especially since both are still in the grieving process for Chris’s late wife and his late father. Life has dealt them both some serious blows but they have a very strong family bond. Enter Chris’s first love, Helen, an assortment of loving, furry critters- Thor an adorable bunny and Sterling a very smart and as the book describes him, goofy German shepherd- and you have the makings of another brilliant series. Along with the strong family bond, we have an eccentric group of retirees called the Geezer Squad with the right amount of skills to help Chris and Helen get justice for the cases that are so cold they are like Ice.
I am very curious and happily awaiting for more from Chris, Helen, Doris, the Geezer Squad, Thor the bunny and goofy Sterling and all the characters that author Carr makes come to life in her books.
Please note that due to the nature of the crimes, some language, and some innuendo this is an adult read.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
I started reading this at night and finally had to set it aside when my eyes got blurry. I woke up n the dark, around 5:46 A.M. and the booked popped right into my head. So, I turned on the light and started back up with it, devouring it in a couple of hours.
I’ve read other books by Lauren and shared reviews saying how much I loved her mysteries and her characters, both human and other. This was a brand new cast of characters and I had such a great time getting to know them.
Chris retired from the FBI. A man in his mid forties, he moved home to his mother’s farm to raise his three daughters after his wife was killed in a terrorist attack overseas. It works well for all of them.
The opening scene is a bit sad as Chris is spreading the ashes of his beloved german shepherd companion. Kind of bittersweet, but it doesn’t stay that way for long because a new dog enters the life of the family. Sterling is a two year old german shepherd who was recently retired from the police force after he was injured and his handler and fellow officer was killed. I had a feeling these two would help each other heal. What I didn’t expect was how Sterling would steal my heart. I confess he was the character I wanted most to read about. Lauren makes the non human character’s as much a part of her stories as their human counterparts. Some of Sterling’s quirks are hilarious. The scene at the casino was so fun. As was his penchant for country music. And what can I say, I’m a dog lover.
On to the mystery, or I should say mysteries, as there are several to untangle. From a couple of cold cases to recent murders, Chris is dragged back into law enforcement as a consultant and things get hairy. Lauren can create such great plots. You really have no clue who did what until right at the end. I did catch one bread crumb that turned out to be right. The rest, I couldn’t figure out the culprits til they were caught. One character I had hopes for didn’t go the way I wanted. Shows how the author can deliver such genuine characters, take you down so many false trails, and serve up the culprits in ways that keep you guessing.
A big bonus that Lauren does is supply a cast of characters at the beginning of the book. She details each one and also puts them in the order they appear in the story. Even the non human ones. It helps when you can’t quite remember who someone is. But even with so many characters, you easily become familiar with them and nothing slows down the reading.
I couldn’t find one thing to fault with Ice. It kept me riveted. I connected with and loved so many of the characters. Cracked up more times that I could count. Enjoyed the brushes with romance. And was very satisfied with how it was all wrapped up.
An exciting, superb new series and I can’t wait for more.
I received a complimentary copy. My review is voluntarily given.
First Sterling the dog is a hoot. Him in the casino reminded me of that picture dogs playing poker.
The story was really engaging. I loved how they had all these cold cases and were working them on the sly posing as a book club.
Chris moved home after his dad died to help his mom. His children came with him and they are precocious and adorable. You get a hint that his marriage wasn’t doing to well before his wife died. You also see that he has someone who got away and he still loves for they do reconnect in this book. He is smart, kind, patient and mischievous. Him hooking up with the geezer club (book club his mom sent him to) was where the excitement begins. That book club is a hoot. Francine cracked me up and how they go about finding things out is awesome.
For Chris, he has a case hanging over his head from when he was younger. A girl goes missing and she has accused Chris of something. NOw that he is back in town, speculation on the case is brought to light due to a deputy sheriff and his grudge against Chris. The geezer club takes that case up and it starts to intertwine with murders that are happening in the here and now. Once is a man found on Chris’s property. while trying to find the answers, things get dangerous and messy. We have some reveals that knock your socks off and also a little romance happening between Helen and Chris.
We see old skeletons in the closet come out and what skeletons they are. We have Chris’s mom who is really entertaining play matchmaker and stand up for Chris with spunk and sass.
the story keeps you in the moment and has you wanting to be part of the book club. The characters have you liking them from the get go. Well most of them-Rodney bugged me he was way to caught up in jealousy and anger for me. There are a few others that have the hairs on your head raise but for the most part the characters are ones you like and smile at their antics. The writing is nicely paced and the plot is a series of mini plots intertwined together to create a fascinating story.
Chris Matheson is a retired FBI agent that has moved home after the death of his wife to a terrorist attack. He now lives on his mother’s farm with his three daughters. Because he has shut himself off from the world, his mother talks him into joining his late father’s book club. This is no ordinary group; it is a collection of retired law enforcement officials that does a lot more than read books called the Geezer Squad. They reluctantly let Chris in and show him that they are working on one of Chris’ dad’s old cold cases. Middle age women are found brutally killed with their houses burned down around them.
But this is not the only murder they will be investigating. Twenty years earlier, Chris took a teenage girl, Sandy Lipton to the prom. Shortly thereafter she is found to be pregnant and she insists that Chris is the father, but that can’t be since nothing happened after prom. Just before Sandy is to have the baby she disappears and Chris is initially blamed for the murder. Even though he is cleared the locals still look at him as the killer that has his police father cover everything up.
Chris has his hands full with the investigation when a former friends wife is discovered murdered and he tries to blame Chris. There is a cartel member that is found dead on Chris’ property. You have the brother to Sandy Lipton that seems to have everything going for him. And don’t forget the casino owner’s daughter that has a rap sheet and a quick answer to all the questions.
This is another great mystery from Lauren Carr. I love Chris. He is a good man that finds himself in trouble yet keeps his cool. I loved Doris, she’s one woman you don’t want to cross or you will be stuck eating her tuna casserole. Oh, and you can’t forget Sterling. A retired police dog that is “goofy.” And I have to say that I love Mick Alger’s narration, he adds so much life to the characters.
If you love mysteries and enjoy Lauren’s other books you need to check out the new Chris Matheson series. You will not be disappointed.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.
Have you ever heard of a dog playing blackjack? I know that I have not, Lauren Carr has brought us a book with another dog. We meet Chris Matheson and his family in this very entertaining book.
They are a mystery every time we turn the page. I would call this a page-turner with a twist and turns with each time you decide to turn the page.
What book club is Elliott trying to get Chris to join? There mysteries and secrets too from the beginning to the end of the book. Do we have a serial killer on the loose? Who after Chis Matheson and why is the town believe that he killed Sandy Lipson and her baby?
Lauren CarrLauren Carr does not disappoint. If you have not read her other books then I suggest you do. ICE is only book one of her newest series. I look at this Sterling and say he may have Gnarly by entertaining you. Gnarly and Sterling should team up and see what they do together.
Will Chris Matheson and his buddies solve the cold case? There seems to be quite a few twists and turns you will not be able to guess some of the crimes.
There are a long of death and crime through this book but that is cause it is crime fiction and a mystery. I would also suggest that you if you are the fan of both or Mystery and have not read Lauren Carr other books. Then you are missing out. Once you read one you are going to want to read her other books. You can check out my reviews for The Mac Faraday Mysteries, Lovers In Crime Mysteries, The Joshua Thornton Mysteries, Thorny Rose Mysteries.
You can add ICE to the list as well. I can not wait for book two of this series. I can not wait for to pick up another Lauren Carr book soon.
I am no stranger to the author's writing and so when I saw that she has a new series, I was happy to start with the first book for a change. But all her books are easy to easy as standalones because of the list of characters at the start of each book.
The main point which caught my attention was the unsolved mystery - the disappearance of Sandy inferred in the blurb. It had the making of a perfect mystery read especially with the prologue. I was immediately interested in Sandy's fate. This curiosity is what carried me through the pages.
The author's writing style is such that the reader can easily grasp and imagine what's happening. It is so full of imagery and so easy to read too. So her books always make for a delightful few hours spent in trying to solve a case. whatever it might be about. I literally flew through the pages and I was pleasantly surprised when I realised that I had finished the book in record time.
The pacing and the way the scenes were plotted had my mind turning in circles trying to figure out the happenings of the past case. As usual, there was a variety of characters to get used to and their various mannerisms especially that of the dogs had me laughing lightly. The vein of humour was seen in the interaction with most characters - Chris, Doris, Helen and the Geezer Squad. The latter were particularly entertaining.
And the case proceedings were intricately entwined with humour and romance. So it was an all round entertainer in my POV. The way Chris went about to solve the case was realistic and fun to follow with my own brand of armchair investigation.
What I found a bit disbelieving was the way the Geezer squad were able to figure out the Jane Doe. Yes, they are well connected because of their past professions. Inspite of that, it felt too easy for them. I would have preferred a more strenous search. That's the only point which marred this book for me. Otherwise it was a full 5 star read.
As such, I very much enjoyed the solving of the Sandy case and I look forward eagerly to the next book!
I received a copy voluntarily for reviewing purposes which doesn't impact my views.
My one line review : An all round entertaining mystery with a dash of romance and humour.
Years ago, Sandy Lipton was a young unwedded pregnant woman who disappears one night Everyone believes it is Chris Matheson, a young man she fancies and they were fighting the same night before her disappearance. Fast forward a few decades later, Chris is now a retired FBI agent who is still haunted by his past. He relies on fellow retired law enforcement officers to help assist solving the cold case but when more dead bodies turn up, will Chris finally be free of suspicion?
When reading this novel, I noticed there was a key detailing the list of characters in the order of appearance. At first, I didn't think it was needed but I am glad the author included it because, with many overlapping murders and the number of characters, it got confusing very quickly. I did enjoy the story but I didn't like some of the characters and felt that the conversations were a bit unrealistic. For example, Chris's mother, Doris calls women "tramps" when she doesn't approve of them or their behaviors but yet when it was noted that Doris conceived Chris out of wedlock no one commented on her "tramp status" or how she started dating again after 8 months after her husband has passed. Overall, it was a decent book and I would be open to reading other works by the author.
In this 1st entry in Lauren Carr's Cold Case series, do not confuse any advertising claim of "clean" with the concept of "cozy." Think a lighter version of David Baldacci's Camel Club and you are headed in the right direction.
Unlike a large number of cozies or even clean reads, this story contains a convoluted, well-crafted mystery -- a missing persons cold case from 24 years previous and a set of murder-related cold cases extending from nearly that same time. And then Carr throws in a current murder or three just to spice up the action even more.
More like Camel Club and even less like cozies, Carr's characters in this entry, both main and secondary, are well-qualified to be involved in the mystery. There are no cupcake bakers, B&B owners or snoopy geriatrics involved. Each of our characters is a trained investigator who has had to retire, due to injury or family situation, from some form of public service - the FBI, the Justice Department, a National Security cyberterrorism agency, a Prosecuting Attorney, a Medical Examiner and an AP investigative journalist. There is even a trained K-9 German Shepherd who has just been retired from active duty after being shot twice in his police carrier crate at the same time his handler was ambushed and murdered.
These people may be retired but their brains are still in fine shape and each has retained their contacts and sources within their respective agencies. So, to keep those brains in tip-top shape, they have formed a "book club," a phrase which is public code to be used around family and friends. In actuality, they have formed a cabal that works together to solve cold cases still on the books in their local area. And virtually every one of the humans has a permit for concealed carry (the dog, however, does not even bother to conceal his teeth!)
So, to explain the "clean" designation, Carr simply tells the story without resorting to constant profanity or graphic descriptions of each arterial blood spray and pelvic thrust that occurs. Carr's choices of adjectives and verbs are sufficiently descriptive and arranged in just the right order that your imagination can definitely fill in the blanks on the murders. And, while sexual encounters do exist, they are discreetly "off-screen." However, the sexual innuendos and double entendres leading up to them are definitely right on the page, and, in some cases, are part of the ploy to uncover the truth from other players.
And while there may not be any profane words in actual print either, there is definitely cursing. And I don't mean the use of "Oh, Darn it!" either. Carr simply uses spacing, dots and, again, your imagination to get the point across as to what the character has actually said.
The novel was one I didn't want to put down, even though sleep just had to happen. The identities of the bad guys weren't easy to come by because cold cases often involve plenty of long-forgotten memories and lots of witnesses who have moved away or died over the years.
I really like the main characters that Carr has introduced into this series - there are intelligent and competent adults, hormonal but reasonably sane teens and active but responsive smaller children. Personal problems exist for each one, apart from the murder investigations, but those situations just enhance the story.
And, of course, if you have ever read any of Lauren Carr's other series, you know there has to be a dog, a trained dog, a smart dog. So you will know what I mean when I say "Gnarly, say 'Hello' to Sterling!"
Audio Book Review. Oh my gosh! This book was so much fun, and as I was reading it (with my ears), there were so many people who popped to mind and to whom I will be recommending the book, and each for a different reason. (Christena -- because of Sterling, the fabulous German shepherd; Lynda – who loves a good cozy that has sexy middle-aged romance; Kristi – who loves to see a spunky librarian like herself in the mix; and so many MORE.) I will be book talking ICE: A Chris Matheson Cold Case Mystery to anyone who will listen and will be grabbing other Lauren Carr books (there are TONS) to add-in to the reading rotation. I’m a fan!
Where Carr really shines is in writing these amazingly realistic characters who become important to the reader and who truly jump to life from the page. Main character Chris Matheson’s mother, Doris (that spunky librarian), provides some of the best lines in the book, but Sterling the retired police dog is a sneaky little scene stealer. I swear, he should have his own spin-off series! The picture that’s sketched out of Chris and his family and their generations of life in this small West Virginia town feels comfortable and familiar, flaws and all. There’s a tentative and imperfect romance to give readers the flutters, there’s the Geezer Squad “book club” that gives us some laughs (and some lessons), and everything feels good…except for the horribly brutal crimes that seem to plague the town.
And the whodunit elements are PRIME. There is never a dull moment in Ice, and it has layers upon layers of story elements to keep readers engaged. So much is going on with the cold cases, new crimes, and an additional, low-grade little mystery behind Helen, Chris’s potential love interest. Readers are led around and misled around with an abundance of suspects all who MUST BE THE PERP. (and yeah, none of them is!) Carr is really a master at deceiving her readers in the most delicious ways.
Audio book narrator Mike Alger earns high marks in all areas for his performance. His pacing is perfect, and he brings the appropriate emotions and attitudes to his voicing of the characters. I listened at 1.25x speed, but that was more because I was impatient to see how the story would end than anything else. I cannot wait for the next installment in this series and sincerely hope that Alger is back to narrate it again.
I highly recommend this book because it has something to appeal to nearly every reader (except aliens…sorry, Belle). ICE is a contemporary balance of mystery, family, romance, aging, and humor elements that will keep readers fully entertained for the duration. Thank you to iRead Book Tours and the author for providing me an audio book download in exchange for my honest opinion – the only kind I give. When Chris Matheson’s wife was killed, he was left with three young daughters to raise, a difficult thing to do under any circumstances but much worse when you’re an active FBI agent. Chris retired and moved the family home to Harper’s Ferry, WV, to live with his mom, director of the town library. A few months later, his mother, Doris, decided he needed something to do with his time, to get him out and about, and the perfect thing for him is the mystery book club that meets at the library. Reluctant at first, Chris finally succumbs to the pressure and, once again, his life takes a significant turn.
This is not your normal mystery book club, you see, but a group of retired law enforcement who, on their own, look into cold cases. Known as the Geezer Squad, they’re reluctant, at first, to accept Chris into their ranks because, well, he’s not qualified because he’s not a geezer so he doesn’t have the experience needed to ferret out the truth of long-dormant cases. That irritates Chris, of course, but they work out their differences and set out to solve some cases. One of them is the case of the pregnant Sandy Lipton who went missing years ago and Chris was initially a prime suspect.
Multiple murders, truly appealing characters, cunning investigating, and sly humor, not to mention a bunch of highly entertaining animals (including a retired law enforcement canine), make this a terrific piece of crime fiction. It’s made even better by the narration by Mike Alger who does a wonderful job with various voices and intonations. I actually listened to the second book in the series before this one — https://cncbooksblog.wordpress.com/20... — and my high opinion of Mr. Alger has only been solidified. Ice will be on my list of best books read in 2019 😉
If you’re looking for an intriguing and fun whodunnit murder mystery this is the book for you!
If you’re looking for a quick, and fast-paced mystery thriller read, this may be the book you’re looking for. Be ready for mystery, murders, cozy animals, badass characters, and plot twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
This story was a new take on the mystery genre. It is a blend of mystery, family, adventure, suspense, and love.
The writing style is intriguing and easy to follow. The author perfectly balanced the adventure of the present day murder mystery, the cold cases, and even a bit of romance and humor throughout the story. I've never read a murder mystery that made me laugh as well.
The plot will keep you curious and have you continuously guessing throughout. You wont want to put this book down. The characters were entertaining, real and flawed. Doris was my favorite she was an incredible badass woman who you don't want to cross.
If you love mysteries and thrillers you will enjoy this book!

Lauren spins an amazing web of lies, murder and love that will have you on the edge of your seat.
In this story, a young woman who has a fascination with Chris Matheson states he is the Father of her unborn child. While some know the truth, before he can prove his innocence with a DNA test both Sandy and her unborn child disappear never to be heard from again. Even after years of a successful career in the FBI, a marriage that did not quite work out and being the Father of a group of smart young ladies, this incident is still hovering over him like a dark cloud.
When he returns home after the death of his wife to give his daughters some normalcy, he is drawn to a group of former law enforcement officers who have retired but still love the thrill of solving a case. This group has a wide range of shockingly amazing skills! They assist him with this cold case that as they begin to unravel the case, leaves you shocked and in horror. We follow a story of deceit, betrayal, murder and family lies. These events from the past lead into a string of current deaths in an interesting twist that constantly leaves you guessing to who is the real culprit.
I love the way Lauren spun this novel - I could not put the book down! I had to know what happened to Sandy and her unborn child and how this disappearance was tied into a string of other murders. I never saw the end coming but it was perfect and suited the novel. A definite must read novel!
Lauren Carr "hits the Jackpot" again with this new "Geezer" series!
Ice is an exciting story of a retired FBI man who tragically lost his wife, so returned to his home town so his mother can assist him in raising his children. When his daughter revealed to him a cruel statement made to her at school, Chris decided it is time to do whatever he needs to tyo solve an "ice" cold case.
Once again, Lauren has created a delightful mix of characters which seem to jump out of the story into real life! The scenes are equally well-portrayed.
As with all her books, Lauren adds that touch of humor which adds to the reader's enjoyment.
My rating for this book is Five Stars! *This book was gifted me with no requirement for a positive review. This is my honest review.
Ice is the first in this series where we follow a retired FBI agent who’s wife has been killed. Now he finds hisself alone with 3 children. He soon decides to move in with his mother who lives in West Virginia on a farm. This story is filled with mystery, family, love, murders and more.
This book is an unraveling story about an old FBI agent that is being re-accused of raping and murder of a teenage girl. When he was younger he had to deal with the same accusations but was cleared. All comes rising up again now that he is older. Is a retired FBI agent that lives on a farm with his tree daughters and mother. With a team of retired FBI people he finds out what really happened. It is a whirlwind of action and a great book for those who love police and crime story’s. It’s really well written. The chapters are short so it’s really easy to go through. I have really enjoyed reading this book and figuring out what happened to whom.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Grabbed my interest in the first chapter and from there I had a hard time putting it down. I love Lauren Carr, she is a very interesting writer. I hope she continues with this series like she did with Mac Faraday series. She keeps you in suspense until the last page.
ICE is a fast-paced suspenseful thriller that you will not want to put down! This mystery does not disappoint, drawing you in from the beginning and making you question page after page. Carr has created a creative and unique list of characters that are well developed. Together, they mesh perfectly with the plot and make for one thrilling story. Carr has created a book so full of mystery that you will be surprised to learn who the serial killer is. Overall, a remarkable suspenseful read!
I received an advance review audiobook for free and am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you Lauren Carr and iRead Book Tours. I'm excited to be a part of this tour.
I am a huge fan of Lauren Carr’s previous series’ and jumped at the chance to be a part of this tour. I love her writing style and ability to weave and intricate mysteries that immediately suck the reader in and doesn’t let go until the story ends.
I listened to this book on audio while doing Sunday chore and cooking routine. I enjoy listening to books while doing these types of tasks because they allow me to immerse myself in the story. Ice is the first book in the Chris Matheson Cold Case series. In this book, we meet Chris, now retired, as he returns home to find out the cloud of suspicion cast over he and his family never lifted.
When rumors of Chris’s past start circulating his oldest daughter’s school, Chris must defend himself while keeping his family safe. With the help of the women in his life (specialists in their own areas), Chris starts chipping the ice off this cold case to find out who is responsible for the disappearance of Sandy Lipton and her unborn baby.
This book is a delightful blend of family saga and mystery filled with twists and turns you won’t see coming. I highly recommend and can’t wait to listen to book 2!
I so enjoyed this book by Lauren Carr with its unique character, both human and four legged. Sterling and Thor stole several scenes with their vibrant personalities and antics. I love it when an author is able to include pets into a story in a very realistic and positive manner. The author did an outstanding job weaving mystery, humor, romance into one incredible book. This book is the beginning of a new series and a standalone listen. The characters were developed and thought the story flowed really well. Mike Alger did a great performance with his narration. He was able to give the characters distinguished voices and added the right emotions. The imagery in the book was so well done, as I could envision so many scenes. Without giving away spoilers, I loved how the author wrote the twists in this book and had multiple murders solved, both past and present. With some of the twists, I never saw them coming.
This is the first book in a new series by Lauren Carr. I have read a lot of mysteries but Lauren Carr is by far the best . I have read all her books and I can't wait for the next one. I highly recommend any of her mysteries they are the best.
This book grabbed me at the begging, I was captivated and read till I fell asleep with my kindle in hand! Housework had to wait the next day till I finished. I love the characters and so happy to have Sterling stirring up trouble! Will be anxiously waiting for any of Laurens books to be published!
This book will keep you on your toes trying to keep up with the action! First, Lauren Carr has such interesting animals in her books, I'd like to adopt one of them! She paints a picture that one can see in your mind's eye and there you are in the middle of the action. I cannot wait for the next book! Keep up the good work!!
After having read several books from the three series of Carr's books on the market, I was excited to read ICE, the first book in the Chris Matheson Cold Case Mystery series with a whole new set of characters. As is Carr's trademark, ICE was a thrilling crime fiction novel filled with twists and turns, non-stop action, strong characters, and comical relief in the form of four-legged companions.
Chris Matheson, a retired FBI agent in his forties and the new main character of the series, is a widower with three daughters aged 6, 10 and 13. He moves back in to live with his mother Doris on the family farm. Moving back to town brings back bad memories of when Chris was accused of killing pregnant Sally Lipton 24 years ago. Although he was acquitted, the town is still suspicious of him.
When a dead body shows up on his property, cold cases are dredged up, old flames are reignited and Chris is back in the game. He reluctantly joins a book club which turns out to be the secretive Geezer Squad, a team of fellow retired law enforcement officers, each with special investigative skills, who get together to solve unresolved cases. This is where Carr's skill at creating new and interesting characters comes into play. I just simply loved the Geezer Squad! The four men and two females were unique, razor smart, and used their mature status and life experience to keep active.
But I have to say that my favorite characters were Doris and Sterling. Doris isn't your average grandmother. She is a stylish mature woman, with wonderful mothering instincts and a sharp tongue that can bring grown men to their knees. She was awesome! And Sterling, the goofy German Shepherd, who was injured on duty as a law enforcement canine, just stole my heart and cracked me up with his antics. That casino scene was just priceless.
The only character that I felt was underdeveloped was Helen Clarke, Chris love interest. For some reason, I wasn't too fond of her, and she irked me. I think if her background had been explored a little more, I would have understood her better and connected with her more. Apart from this, Carr captures the essence of family beautifully with heartwarming scenes with Chris and his daughters. Furthermore, she used the external element of an ice storm to build conflict, suspense and the metaphorical feeling of cold cases.
ICE is a strong start to a new series that will have fans of Lauren Carr thrilled to be introduced to another set of memorable and entertaining characters. Carr's Geezer Squad has brought sexy back to mature men and women, whose kickass attitude and smarts sizzle as they melt the clues to those cold cases!
