The Black #3

Emancipating James

Rate this book
In this compelling third saga of the Black series, Joan Vassar returns to Upper Canada–1862. While on a mission with the legendary Black, James comes face to face with a dark beauty enslaved on the Mickerson plantation. Freedom and love are within his grasp, until ill-fated circumstances separate the two. When he is severely wounded in a violent uprising, James’ life is forever changed. Scarred, both physically and emotionally, he tries to put behind him the failures of the last year. When life at the fort is threatened, James and his brothers are called upon for a dangerous mission that could jeopardize their hard-earned freedom. The men embark on a treacherous journey that will take them to the Union Capital and then on to their final The Hunter plantation, where bitter enemies and reckonings await payment. As the men follow a path of murder and intrigue, who will live and who will die remains to be seen. Emancipating James reveals the complicated facets of the human soul exposed against the backdrops of Civil War, slavery, and romance.

Where do I begin?!?!!!!! Lawd I knew James was going to be a complex character! And I also knew that his book was going to take us through it!!! 🗣️AND DID!!

This is the third installment of the Black series and whew if things weren’t heating up before, they’re .38 hot now! James was always unhinged…. hell who am I kidding?! All these men are unhinged and a 🥷 hates to see them coming. Their names ring bells and depending on what side of the law you’re on will determine if coming face to face with them is a good thing or a bad thing.

We know that revenge is a dish best served cold but baby James is serving it up in the buffet line and it’s piping hot! He is a man on a mission and his spirit remains unsettled until he can give every man that has ever double crossed him or the woman he loves exactly what they deserve.

After a mistake leaves poor James deeply rooted with guilt and depression, he’s not sure which way is up and which way is down. He’s already still recovering from things that transpired during the most recent uprising but now he has even more added to his plate.

This was probably the most complex book in the series for me because we got an in depth look at things going on from all sides. Joan how dare you attempt to make EJ and Jeremiah redeemable!!! I was ready for those heads on a silver platter but you took us in a direction I wasn’t expecting. I mean let’s not get it twisted they may very well still end up that way! Let’s hope there’s more slow singing and flower bringing in book four! And Callie!!! That woman is hell and Ive got my eye on her!

There was sooooo much happening during this book that I won’t even attempt to cover it in this review or else we would be here all day. What I will say is that at times I felt there was an overwhelming amount of information that was given to us and I needed like 30% of it gone 😆 it’s because of that, that I couldn’t give it the 5 stars the beginning and end deserved.

I am absolutely enjoying this series but I think I’ll take a quick commercial break before I jump into the last two books.

This is easily my fav read from the series so far. I love the romance aspect of these stories but this one had me anxious to find out what would go down at the Hunter Plantation. I also strongly disliked a character but by the end of this..maybe not so much?

I was on the edge of my seat this time wondering during the mission who wouldn’t make it back to Fort Independence. Was it just me, but I was actually cheering for Jeremiah to make a change and hoping the Brothers wouldn’t kill him. Joan Vassar is such an excellent storyteller and Jakobi Diem was absolutely masterful at conveying the story...I can’t wait for the next installment of this story about Anthony and also get an update on all of those babies conceived before the last mission.

I can't believe this series is getting better with every book. This book was SO good. I'm still trying to understand how Joan Vassar got me to half way liking people I shouldn't like. I wish I started this series a long time ago!!

What a ride!

Another good installment to the series. This was James's story, but there was a LOT going here. The author gives a lot of detail, which I must admit, I initially found annoying, but after reading 3 of her books, I realize it's her style and I'm good with that.

I really liked Abby and thought she was perfect for James. She was truly a balm for his soul. And he was exactly what she needed to bring her back into the land of the living, not just existing.

I started this book rooting for James, Black, Elbert and company to take out 'the black cracker' and his brother. In all honesty, the Hunters almost stole the book, lol. As soon as Callie was introduced, I was conflicted. As we got to know her and see the changes she brought about in Jeremiah, I honestly didn't know how I was supposed to feel. I assumed Jeremiah realized the role he was playing, but Callie had to show him. Once he learned the whole story, he really tried to change. I surprised myself by falling a little bit in love with him. And EJ, totally shocked me. The scales fell off both brothers eyes regarding their father, and they both ended up becoming better men. Still a little shocked by EJ and his 'wives', lol. I did not thing he'd make that situation work, but he did. Wow!!!

Love, Love, Love Little Otis! He is so adorable! And the way Elbert and James loved and cared for him touched my heart. But the scene where he sees Jeremiah for the first time, almost had me in tears. I did not see that coming!

Joan Vassar continues to amaze with this series and these wonderful, remarkable, strong, loving Black men. If you haven't read this series, you should! Eagerly looking forward to Anthony's story!

***Audio***This story is riveting! I was fully prepared to cheer Black and brothers on when they had to take Jeremiah and EJ out. I should have known Queen Joan Vassar makes us peel back the layers to her characters like an onion and there is more to their humanitythan meets the eye. It's amazing how her writing is so thorough a reader can literally see into the minds and hearts of the most hated men.
Of course Jakobi Diem was brilliant, as always. I still believe that he delivers the voice of Black like no other character I've heard him embody. I'm definitely going to relisten to this entire series again because there is so much to unpack. So many gems dropped. So many life lessons. I'm in love with Life on The Fort. Bravo #JJJ.

What did I think of this book? One word - Captivating!
I’m going to try to sum this up briefly. Joan Vassar is a literary genius! Emancipating James is the third, exceptional book in the Black series. Ms. Vassar combines the oppressive nature of slavery but created such strong, trustworthy, tasty, and heroic men who helped our people in the struggle but fell in love with women their equal to show us true black love born in the struggle. It makes you think about your ancestors and what they had to endure. This book was so full of juicy morsels that you will hate to see it end. I’m ready to dive into the next book, Anthony Unshackled next. It’s time to discover Ms. Joan Vassar! You won’t be sorry. You’ll ask yourself what took you so long.

The Black Series
Black (Book 1)
Elbert: The Uncaged Mind (Book 2)
Emancipating James (Book 3)
First let me say, I just love how these men had the upmost respect for their woman and protected them at all cost in this series. The strength of them were so powerful, the woman could not help but feed off of it.
A father and son fell in love with their slave. But their slaves never would love them the way they wanted too. They never gained that trust from either of them. And they would never be first in their lives. So one day, when the loves of their lives, their slaves, came up missing from the plantation, the father Turner, and the son Will were left with unanswered questions and anger.
Black, the son of Nat Turner who was born the day his father was hung, and mother died giving birth to him, was never one to show fear. So no matter what, he was gonna do whatever it took to get the woman who raised him off of the Turner's plantation. Black being in charge of so many lives took a toll on his love life. Not because no one wanted to deal with it, but the weight of being a wanted man, the weight of being the one everyone looked up to, the weight of keeping everyone safe made Black afraid to fall in love. But no matter how hard he tried, it was something about Sunday that pulled at his heart. He came to the realization, that he did not want to have the chance of never having love with her at all.
The connection of Sunday and Black are so easily felt. The passion they have for one another, the strength that they find in each other, are all through these pages.
Will really thought Sunday would be his, he really thought he was the better and stronger man, he thought he was inferior simply because he looked at Black as a "nigger". Turning a deaf ear to his father's warnings, loving a woman who would never love him the same, and under estimating Black will surely be his downfall.

When Elbert thought there was nothing left to do but take himself out, his homeboy had other plans. Kidnapped by the slave trackers and having him and the lady he was seeking chained up and held at another plantation put a fire in Elbert that only revenge could put out. On a mission, Elbert would not stop until the men who captured him and Anna was 6 feet under. He felt they basically stripped him of his manhood. Thinking he failed Anna, they all had to pay for his thoughts.
Not quite sure how to deal with feelings and emotions, Elbert still took his time with learning all about Anna. He struggled with being worthy of her, but little by little, he realized that she saw in him, the man he was.

When a plan took a left turn, that day James lost himself. It took some time, although still holding on to so much anger and pain, James was able to release it little by little with the help by someone who was just as broken as him.
Jeremiah *sighs* had me pissed to the highest pisstivity! His attitude, his thinking, his whole existence got on my last nerve. But long and behold, its nothing like a no nonsense, feisty ass woman to bring a man that thinks he has it going on back to reality. Miss. Callie was not playing with Jeremiah you hear me? Whipped his ass into shape real quick and made him see himself for the person he really was.
I must admit Jeremiah and his brother had a very unique relationship for the time frame. I felt nothing but love between the two. My first thought that his brother E. J. was only using him, but that was far from the case IMO.
Nettie *roll eyes* this girl pissed me off so bad I had to stop reading for a minute to get myself back together. I tried to understand her mindset...OK, no I didn't, I didn't care what mindset she was in, I was just too pissed at her to care or think about it.
I think book 3 might just be my favorite out of 3. I enjoyed them all, but with eyes being open and tables turning...yeah, book 3 was my favorite.
Oh! Before I end this review there is no way I can leave out Dr. Shultz. He turned out to be one of my favorite characters. I also liked Tim because he had a genuine heart.

Book 3 of the Black series reunites the readers with residents of Fort Independence and introduces a host of others. Life was good, and then an unexpected guest arrives with a message from the Queen of England. The men set out on a mission that may cost them their lives.
Unsure of their future, each man leaves something for their women to remember them by...literally.

The main character, James, struggles with his past, as he desperately tries to move on to the future. Once again, love plays a significant role in the healing.

Although, the focus the placed on James, the breakout character stole my heart. Born a slave, offspring of the slave owner, and an overseer of his people, Jeremiah aka the black cracker, struggles with his identity. I hate that I loved him and his brother as much as I did, but their relationship was unique and genuine. It was an example of many relationships that go unmentioned of that time.

To sum it up, this book displayed the strength of the black man, and the power of the black woman. I highly recommend this 💎💎💎💎💎by @joan.vassar.

She did it again !!!

Emancipating James is the third novel in the Black series. Often when authors delve into series they may not be able to maintain the same quality going forward. That has not been the case with this series. Each book has gotten better. You can see the author's growth. This story is about righting wrongs, pain, emancipation and redemption. Joan Vassar has a way of making you feel comfortable spending time with her characters. Some are friends you wouldn't mind hanging out  with and others you're glad that they are only a figment of her imagination. You wouldn't expect a book centered around  slavery  to make you laugh, cry and bite your bottom lip while reading the love scenes. The author even had me feel empathy and compassion for the antagonist, Jermiah. This book kept me entertained from beginning to end.

This is the third book in the "Black" series and, I must say, Joan Vassar brought the same intensity if not more in this book. The author gave a different perspective of Slavery, she help the reader to see that amidst a difficult time there was some happiness. She also made it easy for you to visualize the characters with her descriptive story telling. I definitely recommend this book, I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Let freedom ring

I must say the writing was some descriptive you couldn't help but feel like you'd been transported to old plantations and slaves quarters. I immensely enjoyed the way the words in this book give us a look at the people of that time as intelligent, vigilant and courageous. They moved like clockwork.

This twist of view that took place was what I imagine happened more often than not. Good read!

Third book in the the Black series. I am loving the series overall, but not sure how I feel about this book. I felt like I had to suspend my disbelief too much.

The redemption of the ruthless killers, Overseer Jeremiah, the Black Cracker his half brother and EJ, the master of the plantation is too amazing. Love of 2 good slave woman is a miraculous.
Then we have the master who tells his new wife that he's in love with the slave. He will never sell her and will take care of the children they have. He also wants them to be friends and coexist. She just accepts this in the 1850's and then we have to endure a threesome love scene, eww.

The characters are really well developed. We get so much detail about everything that you can imagine yourself being there. I really enjoyed the book overall, but after clocking in at 20h 31m, we could have done without the clear folks sex scenes.

My goodness! I have truly fallen in love with the characters in The Black Series. “Emancipating James” masterfully explores the intricacies of the emancipation era as the narrative focuses on James as he navigates the tumultuous post-Civil War era haunted by a mistake that affects him deeply and abates his strength at times, but he still avails. In retrospect, I expected this story line to focus on James solely, but it captures a larger tapestry of historical events and frame narratives centered around President Lincoln’s interaction with Black and his men, and the Hunter brothers (Jeremiah and E.J) along with the women they are deeply in love with. All of these elements come into play while the men grapple with the complexities of social-political norms of that era. The strength behind such strong black leading characters has kept me wanting more. This was yet another 5 star- rating that offered me such an emotionally resonant experience of historical fiction, drama and a touch of romance.

Joan Vassar is a true legend

Whew! There is so much to praise about this book. So many people are hung up on titles when the heart of these books are more than what the title suggests. Ms. Vassar opened her mind and allowed us a moment to come in, take our shoes off and feel like we were home. Historical fiction literature is one way she has brought a time none of us experienced to life.

Let’s start with James. Yes the book title suggests this is his book, but that’s looking at the trees rather than seeing the forest. We got to take the journey with James as he emancipated himself from his own mind. Along the way we were transported into the lives of those that would affect James in one way or another good or bad. So I understand why Ms. Vassar chose the title because we did experience his emancipation. It probably helped others who may be struggling with these same issues in this era. We are all in some way needing to emancipate our minds from a range of things that holds us back.

The majority of the book is essentially about Fort Independence and its residents and future residents. What Ms. Vassar was able to do with this little community is show what kind of world we could have if everyone could see past the color of another’s skin as we have been programmed not to do, we could live in harmony. The reason people came and refused to leave is because Fort Independence represented family, love, and community. We all want to pack a bag of essentials and move to Upper Canada 1860’s and feel how amazing it is to actually have community backing. The phrase “it takes a village” is playing out in Fort Independence.

Nat Hope Turner AKA Black is quite possibly the most endearing human being ever created in print. He was born to carry the weight of the struggle on his back as his calling. We can all assist in righting the wrongs, but only a select few has a calling to make it look effortless. While Black commands the immediate attention of any and all in his presence he is not above being of service to others. A true leader can take instruction as well as give instruction. Working along side his people is what set him apart from any of the “bosses” in this book, he wasn’t afraid of the work or being immersed among them.

Now, the breakout character in this book for me was Jeremiah AKA the Black Cracker. He is the yang to Black’s yen! In the way that they were both leaders but Jeremiah was a natural unapologetic leader of any who was around him and ruled with fear and intimidation. Whereas Black ruled with an unspoken role but his very presence meant he was in charge. Jeremiah lived a life that anyone else would have in his position for that era. How often have you heard someone say they would be the house &$@@? vs the field? It’s because everyone wanted an easier life, Jeremiah was just unfortunate enough to have it. So he was never in a position to see himself for who he was as an enslaved hypocrite. Break out star for me because he had so many layers and we were there to uncover them all.

Lastly, the intimacy levels in this book was beyond palpable you could reach out and touch it. These men were born with road blocks on their body in the form of skin complexion. So the weight they carried extended far beyond the comprehension of any non black male. To always have to be on guard, be the provider, be the protector, carry the load so their women and children didn’t have to is a burden they willingly accepted. However, those men needed safe spaces that not just any woman could provide. The saying that we are one when we come together was not lost on these men. They could have sex and disengage with anyone, but becoming a true partner with someone who allowed them to shed the outside maleness at the door and be vulnerable with their women is unbelievable. That level of trust allowed those men to physically show their women how deep their live and respect for them ran. They pleased their women on levels we all hope to experience in our lifetime. Sex is sex and feels good in the moment, but what they had was a connection of souls melding into one which made the couplings that much more intense. So that is why Ms. Vassar gave it to us in its rawest form so that we could also experience how deeply connected those men were to their women!

This is by far one of the best books in the series because we are introduced to more characters, we fall in love with some old characters and we see how triumphant the men are in assisting so many to freedom! There are some surprises in the way of guests appearing in this book which was refreshing as the last books were with their guests. I gave this book 5 stars because the layers in this book were so vast and so intricate how could you give anything less!!!! I can not wait for the audible version and to hear Jakobi Diem bring this book to life. I would also like all of my prayer warriors to band together and pray that this entire series be bright to the big screen. Not your average slave era book!

James: An Emotional Emancipation

There is a lot to unpack with this novel. The details, the characters, the scenes, the schemes, the plans, etc. etc.

First of all, this was not a romance novel, in the traditional sense. I'd describe 'Emancipating James' as a continuation of a 'factional historical novel with romantic overtones.' This is the third book in the Black series. The first book introduces Black, his family, and his band of abolitionists. The second book continued the story delving into the life and thoughts of Elbert. This book takes a deeper dive into James, but it also dives deeper into each of the other characters. The twist and turns kept me guessing the entire book. And not to spoil anything, but the story around baby Otis was brilliant and sweet as all heck.

Though the book starts with James still recovering from issues that occurred in book 2, it goes far beyond just his story. Honestly, I was a little disappointed that James and Abby took a backseat in their own book. I wanted more with them, and I wanted to learn more about Abby. There just wasn't time. With so many character introductions and storylines, there wasn't enough time to really know James and Abby as a couple (which was a shame) or get a satisfying deep dive into the other - many - characters, like Molly (the young woman Black and his group save in Washington).

'Emancipating James' does not contain just one plot; there are about six different sub plots within this novel. There's James and Abby, more with Black and Sunday, Elbert and Anna, a new romance for Dr. Schultz, the romances of some of the Nineteen (the group of men that ride with Black), the plan to save President Lincoln, the plan to avenge the death of baby Otis' mother, Beacon Hill, and the storylines of the two primary men from the Hunter Plantation. Yep, there was A LOT.

Immersion into the lives of the men from the Hunter Plantation is really where the novel began to focus the most. There's EJ, the son of Edward Hunter Sr. who was murdered in book one, and Jeremiah aka The Black Cracker, who is the illegitimate black son of Hunter Sr., and also an overseer at the Hunter Plantation.

My dislike for Jeremiah was at level 10 when this book began. There's no way that I could imagine having any sympathy for a black overseer. Then there was Callie. Jeremiah and his brother EJ purchased Callie from the slave auction. Callie was different from other slaves, in that she had been educated by her former master and was not pliable or amenable to threats. I liked Callie, and as the book went on, so did Jeremiah. Their relationship actually became the focal love story within this book. Also, the relationship between the Hunter brothers became a big part of the book.

I'm not happy about having any sympathy towards a slaver and an overseer, so I have mixed feelings, lol. I suppose that is the true measure of a good writer. Miss Vassar, as my grandma would say, put her foot in this book. Truth be told, she actually put her foot in this whole series (though I haven't read the fourth book yet). Over description aside, this book was 'unputdownable.'

This novel was so well written that I felt these characters within my spirit. The research that went into this book jumped off the page. There were a lot of true facts within this fictitious story, which made the whole reading experience that much more compelling. Just like the other two books, at times it was difficult to know what was historically accurate, and what wasn't.

'Emancipating James' was worth both my time and my money. It probably goes without saying that I highly recommend this novel, and the other books in this series. Bravo Ms. Vassar.

In this 3rd installment of the series we get another great lesson. The author brought out many different emotions with each book. I was anxious to get to the end, but slow to finish because I knew the end was nearing.

When I started reading I’d already drawn the line between my heroes/heroines and villians. As the story progressed those lines became somewhat blurred. The Hunter brothers, EJ and Jeremiah shed a whole new light on being a victim of your circumstances; living a sheltered life; and coming to terms with your actions oppressing the same people that you should have been rallying with. I have to say I did not see the end game as it related to the Fort Independence posse and the Hunter brothers.

Once again, we see what a respected leader Black was when the Queen called upon his services as an integral part of influences during the start of the civil war. It was a time when blacks enlisting or participation in the war was rejected. Throughout the series, we see that everyone at the Fort moved in sync, looking out for each other. The revenge on the agenda became an eyeopener for all parties involved.

You fall in love with the characters, yes even some of the villians. I adored Lil Otis and his purpose was more than just the son of a slave, his existence represented healing and the hope of building alliances.

This was worth the sleepless nights and the author has earned a spot for additional titles in my library.

I love the whole BLACK Series! I read all three two times back to back. Girl you Nailed it with these strong black men from days gone by that we don't even know the true stories concerning our Stories - not His - story - you feel me!? Please please tell the rest of Anthony's story--I know it will be as exciting and riveting as the others! And by the way; I love everything Joan Vassar and have read them all more than once. I want more!

I love iconic storytelling. You my dear, HAVE NAILED IT! Being a history buff and a teacher I was blown away fascinated by how you've woven the facts into the fiction. I really feel that your version may be closer to the truth than His-story has lead us to believe. I am now a true fan of all things Joan Vassar! Please please continue Anthony's story - I check constantly for it. I've read everything you've put out and I can't wait for more! GOD bless you heart. May HE continue to pour into your talent spirit!

Spectacular!

I chose to give this author this rating because like her first two novels in the Black series, she has successfully told a story about another brother. I am happy that James made it through a near death experience. But I am more happy that despite the woman who haunted him, he still managed to find love.

Before all the men went on their mission, they knew that anyone of them could not make it back. So they must have made love to their women like it was going to be their last go at it because every woman at Ft. Independence was with child when the men came back. Loved it! Even James is an expected father.

All-in-all, Me. Vassar has pulled me into a time where you can't imagine living through. But the strong community makes you wish you were a part of it. All that loving going on.

Really Just A Good Story!!

First I have to say that this has been one of the most enjoyable experiences! This was such a stunning conclusion to the story of James and the Hunter Plantation. The writer is weaving a story so good that you just want it to continue forever. The time period is challenging because sometimes you just want to cry in anguish. The writer handles this just beautifully, you get to see a sometimes candid view of what the human condition was like.I loved also the writer is staying close to true events in history. This is just a wonderful series to invest time and is shelf worthy. Also there are alot of sexy men to oh and aww over. This is just good writing with a developed storyline and character development is just spot on.

Just keeps getting better

I am floored with how good this book was! All of them have been excellent so far but this one was soooo good! So much transpired! So many characters developed and we were introduced to so many more. I loved this book. I felt all the emotions as I read and experienced this installment in the series. I started out hating Jeremiah, then I felt like I liked him and didn’t like him at the same time. Then I was hoping Black and the men didn’t kill him because I really liked him a lot. Lordy! All the women were having babies when the men came back... loved it! So many parts that I loved! Freedom and change for the better. I love these characters so much it is like they are real. This series is EXCELLENCE!

Black is Powerful

I really enjoy the Black series. I normally tire of reading series books because they leave cliff hangers. But when the story line ties some true history in it and good characters, I look forward to reading the next book.

This book is the third installment on the brothers during the civil war era, their struggles to maintain the dignity, righting the wrongs of slavery and dealing their own view of justice.

The author has well define characters, she shows how the men evolve and fight their internal devils to become better for their families and themselves. The women they love are no wimps either. Bring on the next book, please!

Excellent read ... this series was my first taste of this author and man oh man she didn’t disappoint me. My expectations were not high because I don’t think slavery times and romance mix but the author showed there much more to the equation! There twists and turns, up and downs... I had to admit I was confused as to whether I like the villain or not! There is so much depth to the story. I have a favorite historical romance author and I didn’t know if I had room in my heart for another but Ms Vassar doesn’t need to share a space she created her own nook and flavor and I LOVE IT!

Brotherhood

The first 2 books of the Black series were great, the detail and history was amazing. While I knew James would get a book because he was a big part of the brotherhood, it was very repetitive. I understand going back for Jeramiah but to just find out why Fannie came was a waste of time and yielded no result, just putting them in more danger. I became more interested in EJ and Jeramiah and would skip some of the drawn out parts. I will stop here and not go to the fourth book, Anthony was only mentioned in passing in all of the books as one of the young men helping. I cant see his story holding anything different.

No time for regrets, keep moving forward

Black and his brothers continue to help others to freedom, but a loose end from a previous fight becomes more the worry. It has to be dealt with and a call for help from the Queen to warn the President makes this a more intriguing work. James is still trying to handle the event of Fannie's death while planning revenge on the black cracker at the Hunter plantation; there are multiple stories within this read even a man with two wives getting twice the satisfaction. I did not see that coming. I could not put this down. Joan Vassar writes with passion and integrity.
