EVERY WISH HAS A COST BUT WILL THE SOCIETY BE WILLING TO PAY IT?

Once a hacker-for-hire living in the shadows, Josephina “Jo” Espinosa is the newest member of a magical Society. Their mandate? To grant the wishes of mortals. A simple enough task until Jo is faced with an impossible wish – and her inability to grant it might spell disaster for her entire team, if not the Society itself.

Jo is used to high-pressure situations, but after a string of disasters, the last thing she needs is stakes of this magnitude. Especially given that neither she nor the Society know quite what the consequences of failing to grant a wish might be.

The only person with answers is the Society’s aloof and cryptic leader, Snow. Yet while Jo is enigmatically drawn to the man, all their clandestine encounters leave her with only more questions about the true nature of the Society, her magic, and her own history.

Time is running out for the Society, and an executioner will rise from among them to exact the price of failure.

I was sent this book as an advanced copy by the author for reviewing purposes, but all opinions are my own.

I liked this book much more than the first one. Almost all the main problems I had with Society of Wishes weren't present here, so that was definitely a plus.

I enjoyed the plot and it was much easier to get invested in it compared to book one. The stakes were really high and I just wanted to know what came next. I also think there was more than one plot hole, some more obvious than others, so if you're someone who cares a lot about the plot maybe that would bother you more than it did me.

I think the characters, and especially Jo, were also better fleshed out here. I enjoyed getting to know more about some of them and I have a few theories about some of them, and I'm curious to know if I'm right. Also let it be known that Nico has my undying love.

That said, I'm still not fully invested in the romance between Jo and Snow. I also have theories about it though, so I'm hoping that things will make sense after a future reveal. I still should be able to feel a chemistry between them, something I still don't feel halfway into the series.

I'm also..........not okay with the way the book ended. It felt very unnecessary and just a way to finally establish a certain someone as the villain (something that so far wasn't confirmed). I don't mind when certain events happen, but they need to make some sort of sense and while I can kind of see why it was the only choice that made sense, I also found it to be anticlimactic.

Despite its flaws, I had a good time reading it (I also read it super fast for some reason) and I'm looking forward to the next book!

I received an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review. Review can be found on *Milky Way of Books*

The tale of the Society of Wishes continues with this thrilling, emotional sequel!
Jo and the members of the Society must make one truly difficult wish come true, which at the same time threatens to destroy their fragile friendships. As Jo also comes closer to Snow, the leader of the Society, and slowly learns about his past, tension grows with Pan and one character will suffer in the end from all of this.

While this book had higher stakes than the first, I enjoyed Nico's backstory and how Jo matured in this book. Florence is an amazing city too! The ending gutted me and made me cry so much! I didn't expect this book to end like this neither to see such a cruel side from that character. I am anxiously waiting for the next book!

Hauntingly emotional, gripping and mysterious, Circle of Ashes is a roller coaster of epic proportions!

I finished Circle of Ashes last night... That's what I'd like to say because my eyes read the last words of the book, but to be "finished" with it, no... It is a book that has left me with excitement for Jo and the future but also so sad for a significant loss. I won't spoil it by saying more on the loss side, just know it will hurt so be prepared to do "that" to yourself. I recommend plenty of Kleenex, chocolate, and a teddy bear beside you.

After the changes Elise made to the first book, tweaking some of the relationships and such, I was eagerly anticipating this book's release. And she delivered.

The basic premise is that the Society of Wishes, for the very first time in its existence, seems unable to grant a wish. Going into it, they don't know what the consequences will be, but as things play out, they find out... and it's not good.

Jo matured as a character, going from an arrogant, over confident kid, that when circumstances put blocks in her path, it humbled her. The impact and her guilt for failing propel the story forward in a believable way that has the reader nodding, knowing they've experienced life's correction a time or two as well.

I also loved how the relationship between Snow, the supposed leader *flicks brows* (I'll not say more LOL but I suspect we'll be finding out more in the next book), and Jo, begins to deepen. I'm such a sucker for a good romantic relationship but some of the dialog between the two just sent flutters in my stomach. I'm cheering for them and for how it might help Snow develop as a character.

Overall, this book delivered a wonderful roller coaster ride of emotions and I can't wait for the next book!!

This book made me cry.

Well maybe it was partially PMS, but the pages were blurry and there were tears.

It’s a great addition to the society of wishes series. I really like the premise. I love how the other characters got some time on the page. And I loved the breadcrumbs dripped about Josephina’s magic.

4.5 Stars

And now I’m going to go eat some chocolate.

To see more reviews, considering taking a peek at my first in series YA book blog here

Circle of Ashes was a perfect sequel that equally proliferated as many questions as it unvailed answers! An emotional roller coaster from beginning to end that had me turning the pages late into the night.

I loved getting to know the society members individually. It's something I had been desperate for in book one and I am so glad the authors delivered. Tensions are high as Eslar attempts to be the positive soccer mom in a dire situation and Takako deals with mass devestation and death. Wayne doesn't play a huge part in book 2 but I was okay with that. We get to know other characters like Samson and Nico and I loved them.

As for Josephina and Snow, it is clear they have a huge and burning connection to each other not just in this Iife and time, but a far distant and long passed one as well. I can't wait till. we find out who she was and how that shapes who she is.

I suspect that backstory is also key to knowing where this at-present insta-love connection between Jo and Snow comes from. I have ideas, but it eludes me why Jo doesn't question this all encompassing rightness she feels at wanting him being with him when they barely "know each other." (In quotes because reasons. )

The villainy and overarching plot of this series is slowly but surely revealing itself. I enjoyed the pacing of this book and every detail was clearly written for a reason. Foreshadowing was done well, alluding to big secrets Snow is hiding about himself and the society. It is clear in book two that we will get our answers in the future, but Elise and Lynn are going to keep us in suspense as long as possible. I LOVE every moment of this suffering.

We get a good load of secrets revealed- along with a huge emotional hurdle near the end. Althrough it, Snow, the leader, put up a brave front for all. However, in Circle of Ashes, we do get to delve into Snow's emotions and psyche just a little bit. For the most part yes, he's still closed off. He's still the hoarder of secrets and King of Closed Door Conniptions, but I'm willing to wait. The authors have me intrigued with his back story. Give me more!!!

Overall, extremely satisfying and vast improvement upon book one. I will absolutely be continuing this series and impatiently waiting for book 3.

Note: I received an ARC copy of this via the authors for an honest review. This in no way influences my opinion.

After reading Society of Wishes, I was anxious to get my hands on this book. I loved the first book and I just needed to know how this story and world were going to develop - and I was not disappointed. This book had me so hooked and I fell in love with this world even more!

I think the best thing about this book was the wave of emotion on every single page. The authors really did a great job of making the emotions jump off the pages and it really added to my reading experience! I was invested in each and every character... well.. almost every character ( I hate Pan, #justsaying) and I really felt everything they were feeling throughout the book. It felt as if I were there with them and friends with them. There were times that I was crying ugly tears because I was so invested and affected by what was going on.

The book was extremely easy to get lost in. The character and plot developments, along with the world building and the emotions really swept me up into this world and kept me turning the pages. I had to know what was going to happen next and I ended up reading this book in one sitting because of that!

We got to know more about the characters and how they came to be in the society! I loved the fact that we got into some of the characters wishes and how different they seem! I loved the fact that the authors used actual historical events and based a couple of wishes around them explain why history took the turn that it did - along with creating their own histories (since the book is set in the future) to explain history affecting the characters as well. I also liked the fact that, whilst some of the wishes were on a larger scale that affected the course of history, other wishes really only impacted the characters themselves and the people in their lives. It was an even balance between the two and I liked the fact that not every character did something to help a whole nation of people because it kept the characters relatable.

We also got a little more into Snows character and I am infatuated! I was so intrigued by him in book one and I just kept gravitating toward him as a reader and wanting to know more about him - the same can be said about this one! I am still extremely intrigued by him and the history that he and Jo share and ... I just want to know  everything, ok? He's been around the longest and has seen everything and I just want to know what he knows... I am also completely and utterly curious about what his history is and how he ended up in the/creating the society! I need answers!

As mentioned previously, I hate Pan. I don't want to go too much into it because spoilers, but I hate her character. She is such a dark and twisted character and, whilst I am intrigued to know more about her and how she ended up the way that she did, I also just want her to be killed off already. She still reminds me of a gender reversed Peter Pan, but an evil one.

I don't want to get too much into the ending because, again, spoilers, but it broke me. I loved the fact that the authors didn't take an easy ending and showed the idea that some things just don't work out the way you expect them to, but it still broke me. I cried ugly tears for a good long while after finishing the book!

All in all, I absolutely loved this instalment! I enjoyed both the character and the plot development and the wave of emotions that left each and every page! I gave this book 5/5 stars.

I have a bit of a love and hate relationship with the Wish Quartet books so far. Book one, Society of Wishes, didn't wow me but ended on an intriguing enough note for me to want to keep going. Now Circle of Ashes was agonizingly slow but yes for some answers!

Jo continues to test my patience of her rash behaviour. I'm a little tired of all her inner monologues. What I do like about her though, is her perceptiveness. She was able to crack the ice and warm her way to most of the other Society members. They really became a team, maybe even a family, in Circle of Ashes. "Home, what's really important about it, isn't land or walls but the people who occupy them- it's the people who matter..." (eARC, Loc 495). I love the platonic relationships she's managed to build with patience and understanding.

With the way feelings went in the first book I was praying really hard for no love triangle. And I was heard! No unnecessary romantic entanglements. In fact, all involved parties were quite mature and realistic about expectations and what not. Thank you Elise and Lynn for answering my prayer. I also sense another relationship will be revealed. Whether it's old or new I'll be interested to see if my instincts are right. The history and potential is definitely there for this m/m couple.

The romantic development in Circle of Ashes, which was not hard to guess from the ending of the first book, ran extremely hot and cold. One minute they don't care to look at each other and the next they were the steamy highlight of the book. The relationship was a welcomed escape from the pressure of the main storyline but I was looking for more of a mental connection before things got so heated. I believe Jo and said guy have a link so can we please get to that in the next book? I did enjoy the one super blush-inducing sexy scene ;)

I honestly wasn't surprised by the big reveal. The consequences of not granting a wish had always been hinted at as a major unknown so I knew it had to be big. I was pretty spot on. It's too bad we had to find out... I appreciate how the Society came full circle. Every moving part served a purpose. It's truly a fascinating world outside of time.

I'm hovering between wanting the answers to the suspense or stopping myself from wondering once and for all. Having said all of the above I think I'm still curious and invested enough to keep reading the series. I only hope to get some Earth-proportioned answers from the next book, Birth of Chaos. Side note- how cool are these titles?!!

What a rollercoaster of emotions. I will forever love Nico! Nico had my heart from the beginning. Him taking on all the "failure" truly broke my heart. Since reading .5 before starting the series I knew some shit was going to go down with Snow, Jo and Pan... I just have a feeling that book 3 is going to get ugly.

I received an ARC of this book and it doesn't influence my opinion on it in any way whatsoever.
description
Circle of Ashes is an amazing sequel to Society of Wishes. It's quite different in tone from it's predecessor.
The main wish this time being stopping Mt. Fuji from taking lives in Japan. It's in a larger and grander scale than anything the society has done before.
Jo is not as lost as she used to be but that doesn't mean there isn't still a lot of things about the Society she doesn't understand.
As it becomes apparent in Circle of Ashes, there's some things even the existing members of the Society don't know. Considering they've pledged the rest of their long lives to this cause, they sure ignore some important stuff. That's why its great that Jo is the force behind uncovering the dark secrets plaguing the Society.
Josephina is an amazing character, there's obviously more to her than meets the eye. I have a lot of theories from the few teases dropped here and there but I sense a grand reveal coming sometime soon
There's still a lot of sexual tension between Jo and Snow and that pairing is still fiery as usual. I love the chemistry between these two characters, I ship them so hard.
Their tribulations in Circle of Ashes brings the team so much closer. It was really great getting to know them better and I'm all for character development, I praise the authors for handling that quite well.
Also the lush description of Japanese culture is appreciated as it's really something beautiful. There's still a lot to be revealed.
The pace of Circle of Ashes is perfect, it made it easier to breeze through the pages.
Lovers of the series and Elise Kova's writing are going to love it.
The ending though is quite devastating, I warn everyone to brace themselves for heartbreak. But I still can't wait to see what's next for the gang.
Action, Camaraderie, Magic, Tension, Mystery and Romance all come together in a perfect blend in this book.
I happily recommend Circle of Ashes.

I received a free e-ARC by the authors in exchange for an honest review. This in no way affects my opinion.

With this second installment of the Wish Quartet, Kova and Larsh drop an explosion of emotions that will leave you raw from start to finish. Circle of Ashes begins a few months after the first book, Society of Wishes, where we see Jo with a growing confidence in her power and role within the Society. However, a seemingly impossible wish with catastrophic consequences drives the team to desperate measures, leaving them all to question for the first time— what happens if they fail to fulfill a wish? Throughout this thrilling and heart-wrenching drama, we see Jo not only mature in the development of her powers, but also in the relationships with most of her team. More backstory is given on a few of the members, and the connection between Jo and Snow gets more heated. On the other hand, the tension between Jo and Pan doesn’t help make matters any better and the risk of failure reveals a side of Pan never witnessed by any of the members (except possibly Snow). In the end, for the mission to succeed the team must suffer an unexpected and unavoidable sacrifice, shattering the entire Society.

Can Snow continue to hold the team together? What is Pan’s true role within the Society? And is there a deeper connection between Jo and Snow that is somehow related to their past? So many unanswered questions! I am extremely looking forward to the next book of the Wish Quartet. I loved the first book (I have yet to read the revised version) and love this one even more. Kudos again to Kova and Larsh for another amazing installment!

Circle of Ashes really improved on its predecessor. There were definitely some issues I had with the first book that were fixed in here, but there are still a couple things keeping me from loving this series.

One thing that Circle of Ashes nailed was the character arcs. I really enjoyed that more characters backstories got explored, especially precious Nico. We also got to learn a smidge more about Pan and Snow and I mean like very little. Those two characters continue to be the mystery. I appreciated the time we got with all the characters in CoA because not all of them were very utilized in SoW. Every character had a purpose in this story and that was very refreshing to see.

The magic system was also explored and defined a little more which was nice. It gave a some perspective and the severity of using certain powers for the wrong reasons. Also how limited one is when using their particular set of skills. As a lot of people have said, "Magic always comes at a price"!

The plot in CoA was way more intense then in SoW which was kind of jarring. It felt more like a penultimate story, but as it went on you got the sense that this plot needed to happen to push characters into certain directions to get ready for the next stage. The ending was ripping my heart to pieces. Elise Kova and Lynn Larsh, we did not have to do that!

I am super eager to dive right into book three after that ending, so that is exactly what I am going to do!

"But one man remembered. One man, outside of time, care enough to show Jo that there was one force greater than circles, or wishes, or magic. It was the only force that could triumph over them all, lasting when all else was dust and stars on stones. Love."

3,5 Stars.

I thought this book was way better than the first one, it gave so much more depth to the characters, but also to the society itself. I loved learning more about the characters. However, I thought the plot could have been a little bit bigger, the entire book revolved around 1 single plotpoint and I wished it would have been a little denser, I'm not gonna actually wish that though, I now know what happens to those who do wishes. I am still excited to go into book 3 and see what else will happen, also the ending of this book was not okay on soooo many levels.

Our adventure continues. It gets darker. We learn more about our characters.

But, my heart isn't in it. These books are short--the urgency is something that I don't feel for most of the read. But hey, 4 instead of 3 stars because the ultimate goal of the books and Jo's becomes clearer and I'm still a fool spending dollars and hours on this series and-let's face it-enjoying the entertainment I paid for.

I have no words.

This hole book is about the team trying to prevent millions of death.
I really don't know how to feel about this book, I feel kinda disconnect to the story?
There's thing happening sure, but I can't help but feel that all these book is just about giving hints to the big reveal I believe there's coming in the last book.
I feel a bit irritated by it. I'll continue reading, so the reveal better be wors the waiting through 2 books that feels a bit flat to me.
Just as Jo would say - give me some answers already damn you!

Circle of Ashes was an eruption of emotions from start to finish. I was on the edge of my seat, biting my nails, wondering how The Society would be able to fulfil their duty with such an impossible wish. Throughout the entire story, it felt like I was there, watching everything unfold, and I felt the raw emotions flood out from the pages. My heart was in a million places and in the end was broken into itty-bitty pieces. I’m scared about what will happen in the next books because of how much this one broke me, but I have to know what comes next!

3,75 stars!

I am so glad the next book is already coming out in July, because that ending was NOT OKAY. Excuse me while I'm sobbing in the corner.

All joking aside though, I really liked this book! I really liked how we got a better insight to most of the characters. I liked that we got to see more of Snow and Pan. Even though it was a bit predictable, I liked that not everything went super smoothly for our characters.

All in all, I really liked this book and I cannot wait until the next instalment comes out!

Second book to the wish Quartet series. This series follows a girl name Josephina Espinosa "Jo" who gets recruited into this society of wish granters after making a major wish that change the curse of a life of her best friend. The second book centers on a major natural disaster and a wish that requires a lot more then the team can handle. Without much of a spoiler my heart shattered at that ending and all i want now is the third book to this fantastic series!!!!

Note: I received an ARC from the authors who were kind enough to send me ARCs for both books in the series for my honest opinion. All views are my own and receiving this ARC has not affected my opinions in any way. With that said, here is my review of one of my most anticipated releases of 2018!

.
.
.

P.S. I have a confession. This book gave me all kinds of feelings: shock, anger, happiness, love, and sadness.... Lots of sadness.

The first chapter was mainly an introductory one, and then BAM! things started getting interesting! I do have to say that this book deserves every single star out of these five stars. It is infinitely much better than the first book. It answers so many questions I had in the first book and provides an interesting story for the rest of the quartet. Now, let’s talk about each of these characters:

Josephina: Jo is the main character in this series who I believe has grown to care for all of her fellow wish granters in the society. Even though she is still hot headed, she proved that she can stand up for her friends and help them through the rough patches.

Eslar: Our favorite elf! His relationship with Jo is becoming much better in this book to the point that I actually started to like him in this book. I love how he’s a book nerd and that he actually cares for his friends, even if he doesn’t show it.

Samson: We didn’t see a lot of information about this guy in the first book. However, this book showed that he is such a shy cutie and he isn’t afraid of Jo anymore. I loved the parts where he and Jo bonded over the wish. And I don’t know why I kind of have a feeling that his original wish ended up in destroying the age of magic.

Wayne: I can see so much growth in this guy’s character. He cares about his fellow society members and will make sure that none of them gets hurt in the process. Plus, I do love his banter with Jo.

Takako: She shows more emotions in this book than in the last one. I definitely grew to love her as well after I knew more details about her. She is one strong independent woman and she’s not afraid to hide it.

Nico: Oh Nico! One of my favorite members who I grew to love since book one. He becomes even closer to Jo in this book and I do love everything about him, his sunshine personality and his artistic abilities. He is the kind of character that will show you and encourage you to find a true love that will transcend the boundaries of time.

Snow: This guy is the king of cryptic. I really want him to be more upfront with Jo, but I guess that will happen in the coming books. However, I do love the progress we were able to see within this book. I do have several theories on his cryptic relationship with Jo which I still do not know about. But could it be that Jo is the reincarnation of his first love? Who somehow had to die and then came back as a member of the society? I guess we’ll only know in time.

Pan: I hate pan. I somehow think she has something to do with the disaster that resulted in this wish and might be controlling the whole magical system while keeping an eye on the Society at the same time. And that’s why people can’t say anything to her face. Somehow, I feel she also has some kind of history with Jo, and not a good one.

I am so lucky to be able to read this book before it comes out on my birthday. I loved it so much and will definitely continue with the rest of the quartet. I love the unique idea of the book and how well it has been executed. I finished this book in record time and the book left me crying and devastated.

If you love fantasy, romance and unique books, I strongly recommend this one!

I was so torn writing this review. According to Goodreads, Circle of Ashes would earn two stars since "it was ok", but IMO it doesn't really live up to the rating. I considered giving only one star - "did not like it" - but thought it wasn't exactly like that either. So side note to Goodreads: add some more stars to your system! Five would never be enough!

So.. back to the book. The reason why I couldn't give only one star was because, at the end of the book, I was actually getting some information!! In the whole length of Society of Wishes and Circle of Ashes, I (and Jo) was only getting tidbits which was really unsatisfying. That I can understand for a first installment, but seriously, the build-up really should have built something by the second book already. Thankfully, we got some truth at the end .

Another thing that irritated me was the romance. It had absolutely no basis! It was basically instalove/lust and teen angst and minimal interaction for two whole books and they ended up banging each other like they are meant to be! No thank you. I just can't deal with it.

Jo didn't really stand out in the crowd of wish granters. Not that she must, but my problem was mainly that her skill is so glossed over, explained by stuffs like, she felt magic in her showing her the way and suddenly voila! And I'm left with a very big "huh..?" Compared to the other members whose skill were pretty straight forward, her skill of figuring things out regardless of their being digital or not was way more complex, but wasn't really well explained. Oh I'm sorry, magic.

Despite all that have been said, I still look forward to reading the third book. I don't even know why. May be I just haven't ran out of hope for the series yet.

I had so much fun exploring the strange world building and mythology of Society of Wishes (I am yet to read the updated version), that this was easily one of the books I was looking forward to reading the most this year. Same goes for the rest of the series. Elise's and Lynn's love for and familiarity with all things fantasy is on full display here, as it is hard to imagine more than few people could create a world so simple, yet so perplexed. One where you might guess where the plot will take you, but be surprised with every turn of the page. From the very start you're kept on the edge of your seat, cause there's so much mystery surrounding the plot, you're left with nothing but questions, worry that you won't find the answers till the end, and a slight hope that you just might. So you're held captive by a plot you can't control, and tied to the events you can't change. And that makes for a hell of a story.

It's a perfect book. What i mean there, is don't expect a happy ending with sunshine and rainbows. That's not how a perfect book looks like. Perfect book has twists and turns, unsolved puzzles and mysteries, and more questions than answers. A perfect book has you coming back looking for more and making you wait. There were certain changes made to the Society of Wishes cause the authors weren't satisfied with how it looked. That's not the case here. There's is not a letter out of place. Whatever the issues the authors had is resolved here. Cause this books leaves you drowning in the sea of emotions and while you seem confident you can grasp a breath it's not a likely outcome. Cause you have sunk to deep to breathe. And the way it ends, you don't want to. Breathe that is. Only thing that can bring reprive and salvation is the next book. And for that you'll have to wait. I for one can't. The only question I have here, is how much better can this series get. Cause words can't describe this one. They can't do it justice. It's simply that good. The next one comes out in July, is it July yet?

Circle of Ashes was so frustratingly well thought out. It slow-burn answered our questions from Society of Wishes, and yet managed to add a brand new layer of mystery and intrigue. I have a love/hate relationship with massive world building, and I have a feeling, this is exactly what is going on here. We're given small doses of answers through conversations, actions, and memories but we still don't know where we're headed in the grand scheme of things.
We get more one-on-one time with the Society's elite, which is exactly what I was hoping for. I found myself connecting to some of the characters that I had originally written off as unimportant. It's clear that everyone has a very specific role to play, and without the whole team working together, things are going to snowball downhill in a very swift manner. I also really love that despite this being an alternate reality, the issues the team deals with are very real, and very powerful. We're often faced with the question, "What would you do in X situation" but instead of the team just speculating, they're forced to choose. Lives are on the line, and the stakes couldn't be higher.
As the main story plays out, we're also barreling down a one way subplot with Snow and Josephina. Who is Snow really? Why is he so darn frustrating all the time? Why do I feel like deja vu is happening every time these two get together? Something huge is coming at us, and I'm sitting on the edge of my seat begging for it to steamroll my face.
I can feel the foreshadowing like a warm blanket on a cold night, and the pacing keeps me hanging off of every word. Make sure to grab your tissues for the end, and hold on tight because your emotions will range from 0-60 in a very short period of time. I can't wait for book 3!

4.5 stars (1st half was a 4, but second half was a 5). This is such a mysterious, dark, and magical world with an ending that stuns you to the core!

This book starts out a few months after the first book ends. I was only a little disappointed by this because I was kind of hoping we would get glimpses of what the smaller and quicker wishes are about and how Jo solved the ones assigned to her. Instead, we get one big wish, which I understand because that’s what the story is about, but we never have actually gotten to see Jo in action on an individual wish. I felt it started a little slow and that the first 20% was mainly getting us reacquainted with the characters again. Although I did enjoy learning more of the background for some of the characters.

We also got to unravel a little more of the rules of the intricate magic in this world. I liked how mostly everyone was chipping in for this wish, and Jo was learning how to utilize and rely on her team. It was fun getting more details on some of their individual and unique skill sets too. This book also unleashed some extremely shocking revelations to some major questions. By the end, Jo learns some valuable lessons: some questions are better left unanswered and ignorance sometimes truly can be bliss.

Even though the ending is shocking, I do find myself glad that it went the way it did. I think we got more answers this way and it makes this world that much more intriguing and dangerous. I am extremely excited about the next book though because it sounds like we are really going to be getting a lot more answers and more information about the mysterious Pan and Snow!

Firstly, I’d like to say how happy I am that the wait between the books in this series is very short! As most bookworms will understand, I really dislike waiting between books when I’m reading a series book-by-book as they’re published. Luckily, the wait between Society of Wishes and this book, the sequel, was 10 weeks!

Before diving into Circle of Ashes, I was excited to see how Jo’s story would progress, and looked forward to perhaps learning more about the other characters as well. Well, I got both of those things, although at times I was too focused on the intensity of the overarching plot for the book to much care about the histories and feelings of the supporting characters.

I did appreciate that Jo’s relationship with all of the other Society members did visibly develop. And the plot for the series as a whole also did progress. We were provided more information on what’s going on, but that information also made me ask new questions (which is frustrating, but also a good thing, because it means that I’m all the more eager to read book 3, which comes out in July)! I also want to say that I was a lot more emotionally invested in the story and in the characters with this book than with Society of Wishes. I even cried uncontrollably over something that I won’t mention because it’s a spoiler, and my heart is still recovering!

I’m definitely looking forward to the next book, as well as book 4, as I’m curious to see how things will wrap up (I’m assuming there will be 4 books, since the series is listed as a quartet?) The teaser cover for book 3 is also live on Goodreads, and I’m excited that we have a title, Birth of Chaos, and that the next cover will be blue!

3.5 stars

This book starts off where the first one left off and Jo is getting used to her life in the Society. A lot happened in this book and in many ways it had a faster pace. The wish they're working on isn't easy and they're not quite sure how they're going to make it work. When a wish influences just about a whole country things get tricky! Will they be able to pull it off and what will happen if they can't? This time around we learned more about some of the other members of the society and I really enjoyed this. With the members being so old, it's interesting to find out what they've been through. Snow still stayed a mystery, it was sad we didn't get to know more about him. I really enjoyed this story and how they try to work through the wish. The only reason this book didn't get five stars is because of the romance between Snow and Jo. It didn't feel right to me, because it kind of comes out of nowhere. At least that how it feels. There isn't enough building towards everything. I think that's because of us not getting to see much of Snow. That being said, the ending was also a bit abrupt. While I can imagine how it all plays out after certain events, a bit of a follow up would've been nice. I have a feeling we will get a bit more in the third book. I can't wait to get my hands on that one!

Actual rating: 4.5 stars

Reaction: I actually liked this one better than the first book in the series. I liked seeing some changes in Jo, the romance felt more realistic, and the plot was good. But maybe most importantly, I felt more invested in the characters. I loved getting to know the rest of the members of the Society better, and I'm starting to get really invested.

Just... that ending. Did you have to, Elise and Lynn? Was that really necessary?

Review:

I really liked the first book in the series, but I felt like something was missing. That something extra that really gets you invested in the characters. That something extra that bring a book from ‘great’ to ‘mind-blowing’.

Circle of Ashes had that little extra that the first book was missing. Basically, Circle of Ashes had all the things I loved about Society of Wishes, but more of everything. It was amazing.

I’m really liking the changes I’m seeing in Jo. She’s still a little rash sometimes, she still isn’t the best at team-work, but she’s growing, and I like it. I have to say I like her a lot more than in the first book. I’m really excited to see how she keeps growing in the other books.

There was more romance in this one, and I loved it! In the first book, it felt a little like it came from out of nowhere, but either way, I liked how it developed in this book. And I like Snow. There’s so much tension between him and Jo, and I love it.

The plot was great. It was well-paced, with a lot of tension. And the world-building was amazing. It’s definitely the highlight of this series, because it’s such a unique and interesting world that you just can’t help but want to know more about. The world-building is so well-done and intricately woven, you can tell the authors really put thought into it. I liked finding out new things about the world, but I still have so many questions. I want to know everything about this world! (And also, after this series, more books about wishes, because it’s honestly so much fun!)

I’m really looking forward to reading the rest of the series. This world is really interesting, and I can’t wait to have some answers (hopefully soon). And with the character development and better plot, Circle of Ashes was so much better than the first book. It’s definitely a series I would recommend! Especially for anyone who loves leaving this world and entering a totally new one while reading.

SO. MANY. EMOTIONS.

This book was rife with delicious tension that made it tough to put down. The constant disasters, the futility of the tasks, and the feeling of imminent failure (but with a dash of hope thrown in for good measure) developed the friendship and interplay of the team to a wonderful level. The interactions between the characters were so well done that it gave me a new appreciation for every member of the team. And then it made me cry sad, disbelieving tears.

One main criticism is that the pacing was a little rough at times. It seemed like there were long stretches of minimal activity that dragged on, becoming very frustrating. However, this provided the advantage of building the tension and the ebb and flow of the character's emotions. Additionally, the romance between Jo and Snow seemed to burn fast and hot, with no real initial depth. I have my theories behind this though and can't wait to see if the little hints I might have gleaned help shape the story in book #3.

(Disclaimer: I received this free book from the author. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

In Circle of Ashes the stakes are higher than we've ever seen before. In Society of Wishes we were able to see how a wish worked and what we could do to solve it, but what if we cannot solve the wish? This is one of the largest and more terrifying scenario. Reading this book felt like watching the time tick down on a bomb in a movie and not knowing if they can disarm it. It's exactly like that. We're wondering - can they solve this and if they can or cannot, what are the consequences? As we know, all wishes come with a cost.
