This is the second comprehensive, chronological collection of the classic French sci-fi comic Valérian and Laureline. This volume contains three albums from the early 1970s, a period when the series was on the way to reaching it's qualitative peak, combined with a number of texts that relates the series to its historical context.
Valérian and Laureline was (it was officially ended in 2010) on the surface a series of adventures involving two space/time agents who undertake exciting assignments and/or get involved in conflicts on various planets throughout the universe. Under the surface, though, the reader finds contradictions and tensions taken from our world and transformed into sci-fi allegories. The stories in this volume for example, uses the dichotomies of male vs. female, technology vs. nature and oppression vs. revolt to drive the stories forward.
Valérian and Laureline was extremely innovative, at all levels, when it was launched in the late 1960s and has also been trend-setting in the whole science fiction genre, with clear influences to be found in both comics and films. Christin's well written and socially relevant allegorical scripts were combined with Mézières detailed and innovative visualisations of the flora and fauna of strange new worlds, the sentient beings and their cultures and technologies. For me as a ten year old boy in the late 1970s, this was visual dynamite, and still today, almost four decades later, the images are powerful and evocative.
This is a true modern classic (I know, an over-used epithet, but very appropriate here) that reads just as well today as when the original albums were published. It is also presented in a beautiful collection (if the rating was for productions values only, then this book would probably get another star from me). A book that belongs in every serious comics collection.
Now I'm really looking forward to volume three, which contains what I think was the very best albums in the whole series.

Qué bonito es poder recuperar el encanto de lo naif, especialmente cuando un tebeo está tan bien dibujado como Los Héroes del Equinocio, con Mézières en todo su esplendor. Así es fácil ser indulgente con detalles que no funcionan tan bien, caso de ciertos toques muy muy jipis.

En este segundo compilado encontramos tres historias
1. El País sin estrellas: en esta historia vemos como Valerian y Laureline están en un planeta celebrando el final de una misión cuando se observa en el cielo que algo cae desde el espacio cuando van a investigar llegan a un planeta el cual se encuentra hueco y en él hay dos ciudades Valsennar y Malka. En cada uno un sexo domina el gobierno y están en una guerra constante.
Gracias a la intervención de los héroes se llega a una resolución salvando al planeta hueco y el planeta contra el que se iban a estrellar.
2. Bienvenido a Alflolol: Valerian y Laureline están abandonando Technorog cuando una nave se estrella contra el campo de protección que rodea el planeta; cuando Laureline es atrapada por una fuerza misteriosa Valerian va tras ella descubriendo a unos seres que dicen ser los antiguos avitantes del planeta que en realidad se llama Alfolol.
Una vez que ingresan al planeta él gobernados de Technorog no quiere regresar el planeta a los dueños legítimos y los pone en una situación en desventaja.
Valerian tiene que trabajar bajo las leyes de Galaxity hacer cumplir las normas obedecer, lo que hace que quede mal frente a los Alfololianos y Laureline que se pelea con él.
Sin embargo las circunstancias permiten que Valerian a pesar de estar bajo las normas de Galaxity logre arreglar la situación.
3. Las aves del amo: Valerian y Laureline se estrellan en un planeta donde son rescatados y puestos bajo el servicio del Amo. Todos en este planeta hacen lo que el amo les dice porque si no las aves del amo vendrán por ellos. Ahí conocen a Sül un joven que les dice que hace poco su nave escolar se estrelló. Ahí notan que la gente cree solo en lo que el amo dice , de hecho sus acciones son un poco incoherentes. Después de un gran camino con pocos aliados Valerian y Laureline encuentran al amo y con ayuda de los pocos aliados logran derrotarlo, pero el final de este es incierto pues podemos ver en el viaje de regreso a casa de nuestros héroes hay un polizón

Mere klasse! "Landet Uden Stjerner" om den hule planet som kønnenes kamp har bragt p kollisionskurs med resten af universet, "Velkommen til Alflolol" (som jeg lige har læst som enkeltbind Velkommen til Alflolol,) og "Herskerens Fugle" og den onde herskergople, der slavebinder en hel planet (og måske pønser på flere?).

Este segundo tomo trae 3 historias maravillosas. En la primera encontramos una analogía con el colonialismo y un enfrentamiento entre lo moral y lo legal. En la segunda nos habla del lavado de cerebro y cómo podemos alienarnos y ser esclavizados por otro. Finalmente, la última es un simpático homenaje a los héroes de Marvel con un mensaje moralista al final.

February 20, 2016Gillar "Stjärnlös värld" och "Härskarens fåglar". Den senare är nog den mest tjusigt tecknade Linda & Valentin-historien hittills. "Kampen om Teknorog" tyngs ner av att Valentin är huvudpersonen men spelar en så deprimerande och passiv roll. Överlag annorlunda och uppfinningsrika serier.

I bind 2 af Linda og Valentins Samlede Eventyr bliver der i forordet fortalt lidt om tegneseriens forfatter Pierre Christin.
Det er interessant læsning, hvor man blandt andet bliver gjort klogere på drivkraften bag de fantastiske historier, der ofte handler om klasseundertrykkelse og modstand.
De tre historier i dette samlebind læste jeg med stor fornøjelse og det var helt fantastisk at genopleve de vidunderlige tegninger.

Landet Uden Stjerner hedder den første historie og den handler om en mystisk planet, der er har kurs direkte mod nogle jordiske kolonier. Linda og Valentin skal prøve at afværge katastrofen og de har selvfølgelig hver deres måde at gøre det på😊

Den sidste historie er Herskerens Fugle, hvor Linda og Valentin styrter ned på en planet, der er særdeles ugæstfri. Her er alle slaver for den ukendte 'Hersker' og bliver dagligt truet af dennes fugle, der med et bid kan gøre folk vanvittige. Linda og Valentin forsøger at gøre oprør.

Laureline does a bit more damsel in distressing than I'd like, and even if she comments on it herself, it doesn't change the pattern. The stories are engaging, however, and enjoyable to read.

Full colour, though some colouring could have been fixed up a little, it lends itself to its own style, with colourful pastels that direct the eye.

W drugim tomie zbiorowym Valeriana i Laureliny znów dostajemy trzy historie. Niestety tym razem wyłącznie kosmiczne opowieści bez podróży w czasie. Rozszerzają one też świat Galaxity, wprowadzając nie tylko obcych, ale także koncepcję jego ekspansji. Przynajmniej w pierwszych dwóch, z kolei w ostatnim, choć nadal kosmicznie, mamy refleksję nad rewolucją.
Jednak nie jest to wszystko. Jak w pierwszym zbiorze dostajemy co nieco dodatków, to tym razem odnaleźć możemy trochę bardziej personalnych historii wokół naszych autorów, czy ich podejścia do tworzenia i science-fiction. Mimo ponurej scenerii „Miasta wzburzonych wód” z poprzedniego tomu Christin twierdzi, że „Valerian” stoi między optymistyczną (np. Star Trek) a pesymistyczną (np. „Aleja potępienia” Rogera Zelaznego albo „1984” Georga Orwella) fantastyką naukową. W końcu po apokalipsie powstało Galaxity. Mimo tego ambiwalencja tu się nie kończy.
Ląd bez gwiazd
W pierwszym komiksie na Valeriana po ustanowieniu stabilnych kolonii czekają ostatnie obowiązki. Musi pożegnać się z koloniami i wrócić do Galaxity. Niestety, pożegnania i mowy łączą się z poczęstunkiem, szczególnie tym wysokoprocentowym. Przy jego braku asertywności kończy się zataczaniem i krótkimi bełkotliwymi mowami w kolejnych i kolejnych koloniach. Czyli krótko mówiąc – rozsierdza Laureline i to wtedy pojawia się nowe zagrożenie. Na granicach układu pojawia się nieznana planeta.
Na niej Valerian i Laurelina znajdują parę komentarzy do naszego świata. Można tu odnaleźć kontynuacja krytyki broni atomowej, pytanie: czy sprzedający broń są współwinni konfliktom, czy po prostu wojnę płci. Rozwiązanie w ramach komiksu okazuje się super łatwe, prawie bez problemów – wystarczy wyjść z tej platońskiej jaskini i zobaczyć prawdę. Gdyby tylko rzeczywistość była tak prosta i optymistyczna.
Jednak by tego dokonać, nasi bohaterowie muszą się rozdzielić. Oboje dostają porównywalnie świateł reflektorów. Jednak tylko Laurelina dostaje strój, będący pierwowzorem Lei u Jaby. W seksistowskim świecie oboje muszą wykorzystać wdzięki i zalety swojej płci, by uratować nie tylko świat bez gwiazd od zagłady, ale także ziemskie kolonie.
Witajcie na Alflolu
W tej historii zostajemy przy Valerianie, a Laurelina niczym anioł na ramieniu, albo świerszcz Pinokia odgrywa sumienie Valeriana. W skrócie komiks ten można by odczytać jako krótki kurs amerykańskiego kolonializmu, rasizmu i Boskiego Przeznaczenia. Jak w poprzednim komiksie dowiedzieliśmy, że Galaxity swoją potęgę utrzymuję poprzez kolonizację; tak tutaj dowiadujemy się, jak ona wygląda.
Koncepcja barbarzyńskich indoeuropejczyków z Europy – kto korzysta z ziemi, do tego należy – szła wieloma ścieżkami. Zazwyczaj wiązała się z uprawą lub inną eksploatacją. Jednak każda kultura i cywilizacja wytworzyła swoje własne modele, które po przybyciu Europejczyków były z czasem niszczone i zastępowane – czy to w Ameryce, czy Indiach. Wygrana tej koncepcji została ewolucyjnie udowodniona, jednak człowiek ma możliwości selekcji sztucznej. Krytykować się i zrewidować kierunek rozwoju.
Ta krytyka Christina nie ogranicza się wyłącznie do tematu kolonizacji. W związku z przedstawieniem w komiksie kosmitów jako szlachetnego dzikusa albo hipisa eksplorują problem relacji z naturą, eksploracji środowiska i drapieżnego kapitalizmu. Czy natura musi się naprawdę martwić człowiekiem? Czy po prostu w najgorszym wypadku okażemy się ślepą gałęzią ewolucji i znajdzie się coś innego na nasze miejsce? Chyba lepiej do tego nie dopuścić. Ale droga hipisowskiego dystansu, ani instynktownej zachłanności nie są odpowiedziami. A nawet jeśli to ambiwalentnymi.

W ostatniej historii tomu drugiego nasza para rozbija się i trafia na cmentarzysko statków kosmicznych. Ostatecznie jest to bardzo prosta historia o rewolucji. To opowieść o samej kulturze, konformizmie, oczekiwaniach społecznych, a na koniec rewolucji i jej konsekwencjach. „Valerian” pozostaje tutaj bardzo bajkowy i wystarczy upomnienie, by uniknąć negatywnych skutków. Ale nadal pojawiają się trafne pytania. Czy możliwość złych konsekwencji, rewolucja przez złych ludzi, ze złym dziedzictwem albo ze złych pobudek musi być sama w sobie zła? Czy czasem zmiana nie jest tym, co jest zwyczajnie potrzebne?

Valerian nie powala tempem, nie opowiada głębokich i przewrotnych historii, ale stale prze naprzód z komentowaniem rzeczywistości. Czy to wojna płci, kolonializm, ekologia, albo rewolucja – Pierre Christin i Jean-Claude Mézières się nie przestraszą, a jeszcze przedstawią je słodko-gorzko. Este segundo volumen de la obra de Christin y Mézières es excepcional. En conjunto, sus tres historias, El País sin estrella, Bienvenidos a Alflolol y Las aves del amo, nos presentan tres historias que van desde una guerra de los sexos, la pugna por la tierra, y la opresión de la sociedad.
Con una maravillosa mezcla entre la narrativa, con un buen humor, sin perder seriedad en sus temas, sumado a un bello dibujo, lleno de detalles, formas, colores e ilustraciones preciosas, se nota la madurez total de los autores.
El tema de la comprensión de un universo más allá de lo imaginable y de las rencillas terrenales, se pone de manifiesto en El País sin estrella, donde una idea general, colectiva y beneficiosa para todos, puede ser el principio para un mejor futuro colectivo.
En Bienvenido a Alflolol, una clara alusión del conflicto entre los nativos vs los colonizadores, el conflicto por un planeta, dispara el choque de posturas filosóficas entre las civilizaciones terrestres y los alflololianos, entre la explotación desmesurada de recursos naturales y la armonía con el planeta. Y aunque la resolución no me pareció muy buena, la idea de la integración diplomática fue divertida. (¿Crítica a la diplomacia?).
Finalmente, en las Las aves del amo, se presenta posiblemente la historia más política de todas. La tensión entre la opresión, el miedo y resignación de los oprimidos y las ganas de libertad de quienes se cansan de ello. Es muy llamativo como se desarrolla la idea de opresión del amo, por medio de la imposición del miedo y locura, pero también, el hecho de como puede derrotarse ello: en lo colectivo.
En resumidas cuentas, un maravilloso tomo, que de seguro se retoma más de una vez.

So I finally got round to reading the second collected volume on the Valerian series. This was an intriguing book to read. You have here the second the book in the complete series (I believe there are 7 in total although the publishers have also squeezed out an art book as well) so you have a book series which spans a huge publication run (a run that the publishers stress was brought to the end by the writers themselves and not from outside influences).
However you have a book which is clearly dated in that it has the second part of a serialised interview with Luc Besson celebration - read promoting - the release of the film. So on one hand you have a timeless series which as many authors and authorities agree is a cornerstone of the genres heritage - linked to a very date specific film release.
Anyway on to the book - I will admit that I am at odds with myself here so I have only myself to blame but I am not the most familiar with French comic strips - although I grew up on Asterix - and yet I try and avoid the American style (read Marvel) so it is very much a case of learning to practice what I preach.
Anyway the stories are fascinating and fun - and on the whole very colourful I can see how they captured so many imaginations over the years. I can also see where they have influenced others which I love as I get to see where it all started. I am eager as a result to see where the books go as there are still many more stories to tell.

Like the previous volume, this one starts with a three way interview with the two creators of the series and Luc Besson, followed by a bit more background, the it’s into the three stories. The first, 'Le Pays sans Étoile' has, even for a sci-fi series about travellers in space and time, a pretty dubious scientific basis, but it’s very imaginative and gives Valerian and Laureline an opportunity to act independently for a while. The second story, 'Bienvenue sur Alflolol' is the stand out one of the volume. It’s the most profound story of the series so far, exploring the human colonisation of world that, unknown to those settled there, was already home to an alien race, and how the colonists react when those aliens return. There are obvious parallels to the historical colonisation activities of Western nations and how native populations were treated. It’s also interesting to see Valerian torn between his duties to Galaxity and doing the right thing (Laureline, on the other hand, has no such dilemma). Finally, 'Les Oiseaux du Maître' is another decent sci-fi story, set on a planet where space travellers are lured into slavery.
Laureline remains the sidekick in these three stores, if one given a somewhat greater role than just decoration and being someone to rescue. It’s difficult for me to judge the overall quality, not really being a connoisseur of comic book, but it’s enjoyable enough and the illustrations, though having their own particular style, are full of imagination and detail.

The second in a series of graphic novels that I am reading along with my daughter.
Another collection of the French science fiction comics featuring Valerian and Laureline. This time our agents don't travel in time, this is definitely a series of adventures among strange creatures in space.
The first story deals with a hollow planet and a battle of the sexes, the second looks at mass production versus doing what's right, the last (and weirdest) story deals with slaves feeding a hidden creature who controls their lives.
This collection isn't as fun as the first one, the topics are much more serious and we see Valerian and Laureline take opposite sides in just about every situation. But worth the read, interesting.

Going from strength to strength, Mssrs. Christin and Mézières, continue to dazzle us with interesting tales from far, far away. This volume contains three completely separate stories of which the only common denominators are Valerian - "the brawn" - and Laureline - "the brains". They often quarrel and are occasionally on opposite sides of any conflict but this never hinders them from allowing their affection to bring them back together again.
The war of the sexes is fought out, for real, inside a planet.
Exploitation of another planet by humans is foiled by the arrival of the planet's native species.
An unknown alien "Master" draws spaceships to a planet where they crash and their crews are enslaved.

This volume collects "World Without Stars", "Welcome to Alflolol" and "Birds of the Master". The stories deal with more mature subjects such as feminism, social oppression and environmentalism.
The main characters are well-developed now, with their own distinctive personalities: Valerian is the brawn and Laureline the mind and heart of the team.
It's clear why this comic book has been so influential in other works of science fiction, the political commentaries and imaginative artwork just beg to be snarfed and adapted into other media; it's a whole new (old) universe of possibilities. I'll keep on reading until there's nothing more left :)

I really enjoyed this! The Valerian comics are really delightful and quick reads. I think it's possibly easy to dismiss them at first, until you realize when they were produced and are in fact quite ahead of their time. This new edition includes interviews with the writer, illustrator, and Luc Besson (who has directed the Valerian) movie. It's an interesting thing to look back into Christin and Mézières influences and inspirations, and to see the impact the comics still carry. Is it the most stellar thing I've ever read? No, but it's a lovely diversion from more serious reads.

Bookended by a couple heavy-handed social commentaries, the standout of this volume is Welcome to Alflolol. There we read about an aboriginal race returning to its home after wandering "for a few moons" to find Earthmen everywhere, furiously extracting resources from top to bottom. Galaxity has a generous repatriation policy but it runs up against the dogged efficiency the Earthmen expect. This is the best chapter thus far. The artwork is more detailed and the colors more lavish.

Not necessarily nuanced by today's standards, but a quaint look at the earlier days of science fiction graphic novels. Christin begins to realize (in this second volume) that he can use his characters to address social issues such as colonialism, sexism, and exploitation; however, he does so in a ham-fisted sort of way that bludgeons the reader with his point.
All-in-all, a nice way to spend a few hours, especially if viewed as a developmental stepping stone.

The good:
-The stories improved a lot since the first volume. Are a little bit complex and the villains are way more compelling.
-Good sci-fi
-Some of the stories are critics to our society.
The bad:
-Some of the panel arrangements are not good, and the transition between each panel can be confusing at times.
-The stories are confusing sometimes.
-The dialogues felt out of tone at times.

Beter dan het eerste deel, zonder twijfel, maar de attitude van de personages blijft vreemd. Ravian zelf is macho en doet vaak, naar mijn aanvoelen, ondoordachte zaken. Laureline wil een toonbeeld van emancipatie zijn, maar huilt en pruilt dat het een lieve lust is en kleedt zich bij voorkeur in iets met een inkijk tot aan de navel. Goed, maar 't blijft wat dansen op twee benen.

I'm loving these comics. They are amazingly inventive and the art is just wonderful. The character development is getting good, as well. Every time Laureline tells Valerian off a feminist gets her wings.

A great second volume of Valerian. Christin and Mezieres did a great job creating their sci-fi world. I love how independent Laureline is and how duty bound Valerian is. A good read for any fan of the sci-fi genre.

Le graphisme s'améliore au fil des albums, si bien queça devient très plaisant à l'oeil. On se surprend à s'arrêter sur des cases particulièrement belles et détaillées.
Par contre, les dialogues et les scénarios sont tellement mauvais. J'arrête après ce volume.
