Mercenary/Goddard Project #9

Watch Over Me: The Goddard Project Book 4

Rate this book
Super spy Mykola Chernichenko comes from a family of geniuses, and though he’s no idiot himself, he’d rather be where the action is than analyze it to death. That’s why his vacation has just been cut short by a call to get two of his siblings out of some serious trouble–while protecting a nerdy scientist who’s latest project could change the world. . .and get her killed.

The guy who’d rather act than think guarding an egghead in a lab coat? Myk would appreciate the irony more if he weren’t so busy trying to figure out how, exactly, to get under said lab coat. Because Lana Ericson just happens to be the hottest thing working the scientific method since, well, ever. Myk has a feeling Lana’s laser-like focus would translate to something equally intense in the bedroom. And if she’s as curious about him, Myk might just be willing to donate his body to science–each and every night. . .

I write spicy romance books that end in an HEA. Contemporary romance, historical romance, paranormal romance…I write it all. The two things my books all have in common is lots of emotion and spice. Last year, I fell in love with a new subgenre: mafia romance. Since I write what I love to read, I started a new standalone series, Syndicate Rules where you’ll meet over the top alpha heroes in the Italian and Greek mafias as well as the Irish mob. There are arranged marriages, forced marriages, enemies to lovers, stalkers, forced proximity and lots of mafia intrigue. Morally gray is my new favorite color.

I’ve been published a while and most of my 90+ books have hit the Nielson Bookscan bestseller list, a few ended up on the USA Today bestseller list and some even hit national bestseller lists in the UK and Australia. My books have been translated into numerous languages and are for sale in dozens of countries around the world. I’ve won awards and been published with most of the big houses in New York, but my greatest achievement is touching readers’ hearts. When I hear from a reader who got caught up in one of my books, I know I’m doing what I’m meant to do.

I love writing emotionally deep stories with snappy dialogue and solid plots. I’m more grateful than I’ll ever be able to express that so many readers have taken my stories into their hearts and put my books on their reread and keeper shelves.

I truly enjoyed "Watch Over Me", Lucy Monroe's latest book in her 'Goddard Project Agency' series about Alpha male former mercenary heroes and the women who semi-tame them. Monroe is one of those authors I count on to deliver a story I'll enjoy, without having to deal with 'too' much reality in the form of death and destruction. She also delivers the heat without fail!

Lana is a genius and a scientist. She's also a bit...well, let's just say there doesn't seem to be much of a filter between her brain and her mouth, and thus social situations aren't exactly her forte. She doesn't consider herself pretty, isn't rail thin, and believes her only asset is her brillant mind. She's a firm believer in empirical evidence and the few experiences she's had with sex and relationships...well, she just can't understand what all the fuss is about. That is, until a hunky stranger shows up in her lab.

Mykola considers himself an underachiever in a family of geniuses, but that's OK with him. He lives for his job as a DEA agent until his last undercover assignment reveals a threat to his sister and the science firm where she works. So he reluctantly leaves the DEA and signs on to the Goddard Project to protect his sister. While touring his sister's workplace, he happens upon a delicious looking female...who's a total nerd...and it appears that turns him on!

How wonderful to read a story about a socially inept, non-physically perfect female. Haven't we all felt that way at one time or another? For me, it's just the latest example of how Monroe writes characters I can relate to in some way, and then makes me care for them and their lives. Her hot bad boy heroes don't hurt either!!

"Watch Over Me" was another winner for me. I read it while on vacation and it was the perfect beach read--not too tense, not too serious, not too long. Just me, my mai tai, the pool, and this book. AHHH.

Watch Over Me is an excellent installment into Lucy Monroe’s Mercenary/Goddard Project series. I found the last one lacking, but this one makes up for it. You can probably read this as a stand alone, even though previous characters are mentioned. There is enough detail given so that you don’t feel you are lacking any information.

Mykola is an INS agent turned security specialist (I know, just go with it), assigned to protect his sister Elle Grey, who we met in The Spy Who Wants Me. Elle is a security consultant at a large lab. One of the scientists, Lana, is working on some sort of cure for world hunger by splicing plants, experiments, etc. However a byproduct of her test is that she discovers lead can be turned into gold or even platinum with whatever she is doing. She doesn’t care; she is very focused on her plan. Through a planned leak in security, this info gets out to a drug lord. Well who wouldn’t want the formula to turn lead into gold? Both Elle, and Lana are in danger.

Myk takes over security and also finds and instant sizzling attraction to Dr. Lana. I loved Lana! She reminded me of Imogen from Erin McCarthy’s Hard and Fast with the way she had no filter and just said or asked any question that came to her mind. I also really liked Myk. He wants to fight his feelings that he is falling for Lana of course. In the process of protecting her from bad guys, dealing with family and friends, they become very close in the course of a week.

This one is predictable, but that is ok. I would recommend it for those looking for good relationships including steam, with light suspense. The man on the cover does not look like Mykola at all. In the book he is described as having longish hair, a goatee, two black stud earrings, and wears leather pants. Not that the man on the cover isn’t worth looking at, but he doesn’t project the appropriate bad boy image.

Also, the mercenaries Nitro and Hotwire from earlier in the series are featured.

Excellent romantic suspense read. I've really enjoyed this series and another book [brother Roman Chernichenko:] yet to come!

As is usual with these books - action driven plot with great characters and lots of sexual tension. Some of the characters from previous books [both Goddard Project books and her Mercenary books:] have supporting roles or make appearances in this book. It's nice to see old friends!

The hero is a serious white knight - one who spent too much time undercover and having to do things he found unforgivable to maintain his cover. So he quits his job with INS and signs on with TGP because he found that someone was planning a hit on his sister and one of the projects at ETRD.

The heroine is a brilliant scientist but socially inept with a tendency to talk to herself - aloud. A guy's got to appreciate it when the cute scientist stares at his assets and indicates extreme appreciation - and willingness to take his assets for a test ride... She also has trust issues. Serious ones. It happens when your boyfriend sells you to terrorists for $500 bucks and a handful of drugs. It happens when nobody rescues you and you have to rescue yourself - after 8 months in a cell.

Is order desperately important? No. Would you be better off reading at least the Spy Who Wants Me before this one? Yes, these two stories are closely linked.

It was a good story with a very science fiction twist that supported the plot.

I just wished that she had mentioned Myk's earing & tatoo in more detail/more often. Yes, they may not be essential to the plot, but i wanted a better visual image of them.
What i really hated about the book was the ending.
If you're going to spend so many pages talking about stuff that isn't important, the least you can do is put more effort into the conclusion and make it last more than 5 pages.

This was pretty awful. The characters were completely not believable - she's supposed to be this mal-adjusted, quirky scientist - but her trademark quirks come and go - and she was strong enough to break out of a terrorist prison on her own, befriend a bunch of belly-dancing middle-eastern women who somehow get her back to the states - but after that she falls apart and now we are supposedly to believe she has no social skills and can't figure out normal interactions on her own.
He's this hard-assed super agent who is sick of dealing with drug-runners and human traffickers, but he reads more like a sleaze-bag than a hero. He's making out with scientist chick 5 minutes after he meets her, keeps blowing hot and cold about who is trustworthy, and seems to have even fewer social skills than the crazy scientist-types in the lab.
The suspense plot was laughably stupid - and all told instead of seen. We aren't there for 3/4 of the action and most of it is done by some part of the about 50 extra characters who troop in from previous books. All hero boy is good for apparently is humping scientist chick in inappropriate places and inappropriate times.

I've read two or three Lucy Monroe books and enjoyed them, although I never thought she was a great writer. This book was a joke, however. It probably deserved only one star. The romance wasn't believable, and neither was the "suspense" plot. The characters were cardboard, the dialog cliched, and the "Hallmark card" moments a little nauseating. A tortured hero who takes one look at a geek scientist in a shapeless lab coat and falls instantly in lust..not to mention that he's a "professional" and yet he's kissing her in her lab an hour after they met... I mean, really? Who thinks this kind of thing is sexy? or believable? There was no tension, no build up of emotions, no discovery...just "let's get it on!" I'm not sure about trying any more of Lucy Monroe's books.

I've finally figured out why I keep reading this series. It's homey. Just not in the way I've been using the word.

One of the things I've enjoyed about series is finding out what happens to the characters as they go through life.

Throughout the Goddard Project series, while the writing itself is rather bland and predictable, most of the characters show up for various lengths of time so I catch up on what's "happenin' in the family" but what keeps drawing me back to GP is the relationships they have with each other.

I wasn't sure about bringing Myk into a book since there wasn't too much mention of him in the other books, but boy am I glad that he was made a main character. Him and Lana were absolutely hilarious...mostly because of Lana. Her inability to filter and keep things in her head endeared Lana to me from the get-go. And Myk was usually so stoic, but around her he couldn't quite keep it together...in a good way. Both of them came apart when they were together and they were all the better for it. great book

I had the opportunity to read this book as a selected judge on the Readers' Crown Contest.
Very interesting read. A scientist's research has become the interest of a very dangerous group and Mykola, a former INS agent/spy/mercenary becomes involved in the case to protect the scientist. A romance explodes once Mykola meets Lana. VERY HOT.
This book looks like it's part of a series of novels.. I'll definitely be checking the rest of them out!

I have to say I enjoyed Watch Over Me a lot more.
Lana is a socially inept, not physically perfect scientist, her lack of social skills and the way she blurts out what she is thinking is often amusing and embarrassing for her. Mykola is a super secret Goddard Project's newest member, a true Alpha.
I really liked the characters. The story was a little too predictable. But overall I enjoyed this one.

Though I've never read the rest of the series, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The ending (specifically the last chapter) seemed a trifle bit rushed to me, but that's really my only complaint.

The chemistry between the two main characters was scorching, and I really enjoyed the nerdy, socially awkward heroine :)

I plan on reading the rest of the series in the future.

I am noticing with Lucy Monroe that her writing is very oddly timed. It is always instant attraction, together within a day of meeting, then a bunch of the suspense builds to a very anticlimactic ending, finally ending with an abrupt "I Love You" moment and THE END. It really takes away most of the believability of the story. That is my two cents anyway.

The female character was written so weakly in this book, I couldn't stand her! She's written as a genius scientist with zero social skills, yet she belly dances and tracks her assistant w GPS. And she survived a kidnapping and escape. But yet enter the love interest and she's all clingy "yes, dear" stupid!! Ugh!

Dr. Lana Erickson, a research scientist at Environmental Technology Research and Design has discovered an enzyme that will bring crops back for a second harvest. In joking around, word has gotten out that it will also turn metal into gold. The Global Project agents have been assigned to protect her from criminal elements that have been seeking to kidnap her and her discovery.

Maybe the Goddard Project is improving as the series continues. I really the way thoughts leave Lana's mouth without a "filter" and that Myk is attracted to the egghead scientist.

I still don't love this series like I do the mercenary trilogy...

I really enjoyed this one! The conflicts were outside, the angst level was low, the romance sweet, the sexy times ... sexy. *laugh* I might need to check out more of this series (which, I didn't realize it was a series when I found the book).

Maybe 2.5 stars. I liked the storyline and the characters, but several of the sex scenes were just too graphic for me. I'm not a prude, but I don't need every detail about every oraface either.

A decent read. Sexy hero, geeky heroine, believable dangerous plot… a bit superficial, though.
