Title: Seek

Author: Angela R. Watts

Series: Whispers of Heaven, Book 1

Genre: Contemporary Adventure (with romance)

Setting: England, countryside

Publisher: Reveries Co.

Source: received from publisher

Seek by Angela R. Watts is an adventure story, but it has a lot of elements of a psychological thriller.

The characters were amazing! They were all quite well-developed and defined. It was easy to tell them apart, and they felt like real people.

I’m not sure if I liked Asher or Eli better. They both have their pros and cons.

Asher is funny and amusing and sweet. He’s sort of the comedy relief of the group, but he’s also the BEST BROTHER to Eli, and their relationship is fantastic.

(Asher/Angel’s relationship is great, ’cause he’s got to be her brother now, but yeah, that doesn’t get to show up as much ’cause they just met.)

And, of course, Eli is the “romantic interest,” while Asher is a friend, which gives him a bit of an edge later on. 😉

But Eli reminds me of myself in many ways, which is always a plus. He’s a lot like me, I think. (I relate more to boys than to girls 99% of the time … help?)

All of his back story just KILLSSSS me, though! Poor precious baby. ❤ Also, more sibling relationships just: 😍😍😍

Angel wasn’t immediately a stand out character to me, mostly, I think, because Asher was so loudly standout that I got distracted. 😜

However, that doesn’t mean she wasn’t awesome! She was pretty awesome, though in a different sort of way than hilarious Asher or hardcore Eli.

She’s a country girl, first off. And that’s great.

But she’s also super tough without being your typical, “OH WOW I’M TOUGH I DON’T TAKE NOTHING FROM NO ONE” female. I get sick of that stereotype, but she was strong without being abrasive.

Angel’s family was also pretty awesome! Gotta love how supportive and understanding and whatnot they are.

Viktor … oh, Viktor Marino. He’s one of those villains you love to hate!

And I must say, I think Miss Watts did an excellent job portraying his narcissistic personality disorder. Shudderingly realistic.

Actually, that phrase is a good one to describe the book as a whole: shudderingly realistic.

Reality isn’t always easy. It isn’t always what we want or plan on. However, this book does a good job showing reality while still shining light on God’s glory.

This book was very, well, poignant. Realistically poignant. It’s hardcore and sad and happy and good and yet you see the evil … but as the light is shone on it.

This book has some heavier and darker themes and shows a lot of darkness. But it’s all in a clean and godly light, which is great.

The Biblical aspects were super well done, and I was so glad to see God represented clearly and without fear in a novel!

Towards the end especially, and during all the action scenes, I was reading this book super quickly! I couldn’t help it … it’s very exciting!

With a book that’s over 300 pages, you’d think there’d be some slow places … but there wasn’t. It was incredibly fast-paced.

Another interesting aspect was seeing another side of Christianity in people who still keep Jewish holidays such as Hannukah.

I honestly am not even 100% sure what all Hannukah is about, except that it’s around Christmas and involved lighting candles, but it’s kinda cool to see different religions – like Judaism – talked about.

(I mean, Judaism isn’t really a separate religion, I guess – just the pre-Jesus Christianity. But whatever.)

Overall, this was an exciting novel that kept me reading from the beautiful beginning to the beautiful end with all the adventure, excitement, and grittiness you could ever ask for in the middle!

CONTENT
Language: n/a

Violence: lots of shooting, guns, and wounds, but nothing super gory. It was certainly not for shock value.

Sexual: none, except some really cute and pure romance 😍

Other: THE VILLAIN IS DOWNRIGHT FRIGHTENING. Ugh, narcissists …

2/5. 13+ for violence and darker elements (scary people).

Wow, this was a book I didn't know I needed, but it was pretty darn fantastic!

LIKES:
-Angel was such a sweetheart. I loved her mix of feisty and gentle, and her faith in God as she seeks to work through her abusive past and confront her demons was AMAZING.
-ELI. My goodness, this BOY. Give me mooooooore male leads who ACTUALLY HAVE THEIR OWN STUFF TO WORK THROUGH! He was such an amazing guy and I LOVED HIM wholeheartedly. I know Asher is the fan favorite, but I personally liked Elijah Davis better. What a guy. *heart eyes*
-But also Asher too because PRECIOUS. And hilarious. and he has his own baggage but he's still so strong and able to be funny (and he's a sharpshooter too, to some extent? My word, give that boy a gun and he will do the thing. I loved that--he's not just comic relief, he pulls his own weight and really has a purpose for being there).
-all the characters, really. The villains were so creepy and twisted and I hated them; Angel's family was awesome; Aaron was really fascinating and complex and I'm really excited to see that another book is coming eventually about him; overall, the supporting cast was really well done.
-The plot never stopped moving and I loved that.
-THE ICE CREAM SCENE. Because that was precious.
-ACK EVERYTHING.

DISLIKES:
-umm...it made me a little nervous to find that one of the villain's motivations was very very VERY similar to one of MY villain's motivations? I mean, it's a standard-ish motivation, but that still makes me a little nervous. Oh well. Not really a complaint, just a UH OH for me xD
-I don't really know what else?

Overall, while this wasn't an instant favorite, it's one of the best books I've read so far this year! I love Angela so much as a person and her book is FANTASTIC. I can't wait to see more from her. <3

I liked this! It was really good, and the characters were well-developed. I did find that the perspectives changed a bit too much for me, but overall I really enjoyed it.

Second time around:

This book is just SO. GOOD. The banter is incredible! And I love how the relationships deepen. AGH.

I was on the beta team for this book, and I must say that I'm greatly anticipating the formal release of this book so I can read it again. It has crime-drama, humor, and romance all wrapped up in a great Christian plot. Definitely look into reading it and supporting a great indie author!

I looooooooove it! And skipped somethings to finish it... That's OK, right? But anyway I just finished it :( I didn't want it to end. :) AND I'm going to work on my review nowish! Check on my blog, (kayleeskindofwrites.blogspot.com/) on the 6th for my review of Seek, and Behold by Faith Potts because I forgot what dates I was doing which that's all.

**U*P*D*A*T*E**

My review:
Genre: Suspense, Christian Fiction, Contemporary.

My Rating: 5 stars.

My Recommendation: 13 up because of slight violence.

My Favorite character/s: Asher is awesome! I loved how he was always cool, and reeeeeeeally want to read his story!!! But anyway, he’s funny and made me laugh many times. I enjoyed where he and other characters talked, prayed, and saved each other!?!

My Verse for Asher is 1 Thessalonians 5:11
Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do. (King James Version.)
The other characters are fantastic too, but I don’t want to give anything away!

My Thoughts: This book is the best suspense I have ever read! (Seriously!) And this book had better spiritual content than most books I read, which was awesome!

I like being able to feel the faith of the characters and their author, and not just read words that implied faith in God. I felt for the characters more because of the spiritual content that Angela wove into her story, and I plan on checking out her other book!
(Duh, I should have already done this but… No good excuses.)

Parts of the story were sad, some sweet, others joyful and even some worrying, I was pulled in, and didn't want it to end and am looking forward to reading her other book when I don't have 60 plus books to review!

(I received this book from the author for my honest review and I am truly happy to provide it!)

Summary: Angela R. Watts did a wonderful job with this book. It’s riveting, humorous, and demonstrates well what it’s like to walk through hurt and to learn to trust God with it. This reads almost like a thriller which I enjoyed, and the characters were all so alive and well-written, with different personalities and past experiences.

Main characters:
Protagonists- Angel was a good narrator and I enjoyed seeing her interact with her family at the beginning and throughout. Definitely bizarre how she met Eli and Asher, but y’know what it worked. She did seem a little bit bland compared to the other characters, but her struggles and interactions felt real and authentic. Eli was amazing, I loved seeing how he had to deal with his desires to protect. His relationship with Asher is amazing. xD It was nice to see him and Angel! Asher is my favorite. I think he stole the show here. xD He was such a fun and quirky guy, and both Eli’s teasing and seriousness only brought that out more. The three of them together were a great group.
Antagonists- Viktor made me almost sick. I can’t believe he liked Angel and wanted to have her love him. The irony of him not forcing her when he’s obviously been in those relationships before. Earlier in the book I was wondering about him, and if the author was portraying him too sympathetically, but nope, he lies. He’s just a bad man. The manipulation and his calculated defeats of others was awful. As a villain I think he was done well. Michelle was the same, I think she’s believed the lies so long they become part of her. I do pity her husband, though I know he’s made wrong choices too. But he does care for Michelle and the kids. I’ve never seen antagonis outright portrayed as narcissists, but it worked well here. Both Angel and Eli had to seek healing from wounds caused in part by Michelle or Viktor.
Side characters- The side characters were well written, not overdone but enough that they weren’t flat. Nothing major stood out to me about them, but Angel’s family was so sweet. And it was nice to see the start of healing in Eli’s family. Oh, Clint was cool too.

Setting, style and plot: The settings were done so well, and described in a perfect amount of detail for me. The style was deep yet quick and suspenseful. Through all the chaos, car chases, and gunfights, there still was a sense of slow peace in some parts from the character's relationships with God. The plot was well done, there were definitely some turns and twists I didn’t see (gunfight at a gas station??), and I feel like the pieces got wrapped up nicely for the first in a series, with some plot points left for next time.

Romance: Fairly minimal. Most of the major one is left off-screen, just the start of the relationship is portrayed. A couple kisses, and not much touch beyond, like a hand on her back or looping his arm through hers. I personally thought it was sweet, and maybe could have even done with a bit more. :) It felt a little rushed, but that was due to the nature of the events and timeline I felt like.

Theme: Trust in God is learned by all the main characters. Angel and Eli also have to learn how to deal with the pain dealt to them by abuse and betrayal, learning to let go of the guilt and seek to do right. Justice, trust in God, human responsibility, and healing are all major implied themes, shown very well. I loved how they prayed and talked about God throughout, it honestly didn't feel preachy to me at all, though I know it did for some.

Favorite scenes: Okay-- Asher, Eli and Angel were pretty great together. There’s many scenes that come to mind. The ice cream at 1 am, funnel cake, sheezits, and sasquatch at the festival… it was lovely and hilarious. Asher’s teasing of Eli was so typical of best friends like that. I don’t usually laugh out loud when reading but I did at least once here. Also, I loved the prayer scenes, and when they all prayed or read God’s Word together. There’s something powerful in community.

Content Warnings: gunfights, wounds (but minimally described, not gory). Some wounds are inflicted by people intentionally, causing some trauma. Some intense scenes, and some nightmares about past abuse. Mentions of drinking, smoking, an affair, and a couple of the villains are drug dealers, though that is definitely portrayed negatively. Intense villains, with not much care for others. Slight language, but not much.

Knowing a book is based on life experience is often a turn off for me because I expect the story to be more emotional than developed based on the author's attachment to it. This proved to be an exception.

I found the action to be nonstop and the "good" characters to be likable. Elijah and Asher made a comic pair. It took me a while to get on board with the villains' motivations, so even though they were interesting, it was also hard to tell if they were complex or unplanned. But in the end, everything made more sense. (The reader learns as the MCs do.)

Overall, I thought Angel's struggles were realistic and the themes struck a good balance. Because evil does exist, does have an agenda, and isn't always black-and-white. Yet while it might be unpredictable and frustrating, God remains the same.

I recommend this for ages 15+ for some intense action, references to past abuse (largely through nightmares), and mild violence.

I have been super pressed and busy this summer and honestly, I just haven't been able to sit down and get into this story. The plotline was interesting and the characters were a lot of fun, but it was hard to grasp what was going on being thrown right into it at the beginning. I am curious about what happens and how things will work out. I'm wondering if the questions I have will get answered or if those questions were not meant to be asked XD. I'll be coming back to this one day when I have a moment to sit down and dedicate my brain to it.

2020 goal: Read more books by Indie authors
I was super jazzed to get this book for Christmas this year and I was pleasantly surprised. The cover for one is a plus. Give a girl a gun on the front cover and you've caught my eye. ;)
Thumbs up for...
.
FIGHT SCENES -- I adore me a well written gun fight or fight in general. These were some of my favorite parts in the book!
Eli and Asher's friendship is adorable
Angel legit knows how to take care of herself and kick butt
A villain that actually seems real, with motives we can believe would drive a person
Shining light on a difficult topic such as abuse and leaning to conquer the darkness
.
Thumbs down for...
.
The only complaint was it at times got overly preachy. But the author used this book to help her out of some dark times so I won't go overboard. I lean towards books that shine God in themes, character's motives, etc, without overtly talking about him. The conversations here were a bit drawn -- especially in the middle of high action scenes -- and drew my attention way.
.
And my last complaint is the romance. Eli and Angel were pretty touchy feely towards each other (example: touching each other's shoulders out of comfort or hugs) and pretty chill about it haha.
.
BUT don't let those two complaints stop you. This book only made me want to read more of this author and keep up with her releases. She has a style I love in my suspense and high-action books. I cannot wait to read more of her books!

THIS is an adventure-packed thriller!

That said, this isn't my genre. BUT - I thoroughly enjoyed this book despite that. It's always fun to try a book in a genre that isn't something I generally ever read/enjoy - and then discover that the author has written such a meaningful story with such a heartfelt message with so much of the hand of God interwoven the pages that the book transcends genre and becomes simply a story of the work of God in the lives of (fictional) people wrapped in unique packaging. Seek is one of those books.

While the whole gang/gun/violence elements weren't to my taste, they actually didn't detract from my enjoyment of this story. It's cleanly written and tastefully portrayed.

The characters were excellently done! I could visualize each unique personality, and I got to know each one on a timeframe that didn't cram too many new people into one place - so they stood out as distinct.

The plot! It started out quite simple and predictable. Yet along the way it picked up quite a number of complex twists and turns, with certain elements leaving me guessing for quite a while. It's creatively woven together. I'd say this isn't a fast-paced book overall - it allows the reader time to relish and ponder what's happening.

The message is always my favorite part of these books . . . the unapologetic Christian worldview is a rare treasure.

The character's dialogue was generally good and in keeping with the personalities - there were certain words/phrases/ways of speaking that seemed rather juvenile/simplistic for characters with as much life experience as I imagine these characters to have (i.e. their ways of stating how they were trying to "stop the bad guys" and so forth). Yet other than that one thing, I LOVED in general how each character's manner of speaking revealed a bit of who they were.

The cover. I love the bold cover, the colors, and how the title stands out!

The heart. I truly appreciate the heart of this book! I look forward to reading sequels!

-the plot was engaging and based off of personal experience (so it felt real and raw)
-bro relationships ftw
-it was fast paced the whole time like whoosh wham oops where'd your time go
-i'm not a fan of cute romance, but this one got my heart
-angel wasn't an annoying female (that's a good thing)
-the faith aspect was weaved in SO WELL

So, first off, I want to say this book was absolutely amazing!! I mean, wow!! (The cover really makes you think it's this good. I haven't got over that cover!)

Anyways, I guess I'll discuss characters first. Angel was awesome. Like wow! She was a rather tough women character, yet she didn't keep the one you see in so many movies and books that is so annoying. She was awesome, and realistic. I found myself relating to her even though she was a female. I can say she's a unique, realistic character with a lot of personality.

Then there was Eli and Asher were really cool. I mean reading about them always kept a smile or laugh with you. I would say Eli is my favorite because he's a little more serious than Asher. (I really like the more serious characters in books.) But Asher was still very likable and I love reading abut him. He and Eli are awesome brothers together!

These three characters were awesome together! I loved reading them!

Then the villains. *glares at them* From a writer's standpoint, they were awesome. And I really hated them, yet liked them at the same time. It's so hard to explain. But Angela was very good at writing them.

The Christian content was done epicly. It wasn't preachy, yet it was so good and I learned a lot through this book.

Content:

No language!

Very clean romance.

There is lots of shooting, guns, and wounds, but nothing super gory.

This book was so good, and my mind is legit blown. Honestly, it was one of the best reads of the year for me!

So, yes, I meant to post this earlier, but I was just finishing up the book (and internet has been so horrible today :P). It’s not something you can rush through. There are many biblical messages weaved through the whole story (such as forgiveness and not being forsaken by God), and adding that with what was going on, I really had to take some time to read it thoroughly.

So, Angel reminded me of myself. Can’t eat much breakfast in the morning? Get sick at the smell of eggs in the morning? YES, same! Her past was actually mind-blowing. I guess I’m sort of really sheltered or something, but I never would’ve figured someone in your family could be so cruel to you. Everything was realistic about Angel. She had nightmares about a particular person, and I’m glad emphasis was put on that as it seems many authors don’t write PSTD well or even correctly. The author was spot on (not that I’m an expert, but the author clearly poured her heart into this), and I was legit in tears trying to read this whole book. Also, I got super happy when my favorite fandom was referenced by Angel… “Roll Out.” 😛

Eli was an interesting character. He was carrying baggage from his past, and refusing to forgive as he continued to be angry. The bright side to his past was the fact he was raised in a Christian home, and he was always praying to God, though not necessary listening when he should’ve been. He really needed to let go of the past, and find forgiveness instead of dwelling. I loved how the change happened to him slowly, yet clearly.

Asher was maybe my top favorite. I’m sorry, but it’s true! I loved his lightheartedness throughout the entire book, and the way he lived his life by following Jesus was amazing! He’s legit that one funny guy who doesn’t want you to steal his food, but he’ll help you through whatever you are experiencing.

I do feel like the relationship between Angel and Eli escalated quickly. I guess I like clean romance as much as the next person, but a week was kind of too soon for them to be in love. I mean, they’re running away from the bad guys one minute, and a week later, they’re kissing. But the epilogue at the end was absolutely amazing, and I did fangirl at that since I knew they would’ve gotten more time to get to know each other.

I’m not sure what age-range is the best to recommend this to. It covers extremely important topics, from abuse and human trafficking to drugs and drinking, and although that is something you must learn exists at some point, I know from experience that my parents weren’t ready to expose me to such content even when I was thirteen (and I legit had no clue really what those stuff were, except some from TV shows). However, many youth groups I’ve been to have discussed those topics starting at middle school (12-ish and up?), and I would recommend it to those that age if they are mature enough to know such things. Just a warning that there is some language that could be offensive to some readers, the worst being the usage of h*ll (but not in a super horrible way that really offended me.).

Seek deals with important topics of today, and I would think everyone’s crazy to not pick this action-packed read up! I’m super duper excited to pick up the next book once it releases!

FINISHED THIS BOOK IN 4 DAYS.

Seek by Angela R. Watts is an amazing book and one that I wasn't sure what to think the first time I read it in ebook. However, after reading it again, I can confidently say that Seek is something I'm going to continue reading.

Characters. The characters in Seek, especially the main cast of Elijah Davis, Asher Mickinnley, and Angel Cutler are amazing. The beginning where Angel isn't sure if she can trust these two strangers that grows to caring for and working to protect them is good Character development. Even the antagonists like Michelle (Angel's adopted ex-sister) and Viktor Marino (a ganglord) are well done.

Setting: The way that Angela uses the idea of a kidnapping to drive the protagonists from place to place but also give the reader context as to what some of those places mean to characters like Asher and Eli is truly well-thoughout. In the end, where Angel has to navigate being kidnapped by Viktor in a cabin in the mountains of North Carolina is amazing.

Tone: The tone of the story never wavers, balancing between suspense and light humor when needed. Ever since Angel walked into the bar at the beginning of the story, Angela ratched up the tension and never let you know what exactly was going to happen next and that is something I haven't seen in a while.

Themes: The main themes that I noticed within the story included family relationships and emotional abuse. When it came to the familial dynamics, the way Angela sets up and pays off the family dynamics between Angel and her ex-sister Michelle but also Eli and his wayward younger brother Aaron is well done. Not only that, but the way that Angela pulls on your heartstrings with the thought of the emotional abuse Angel suffered under the hands of her adopted sister Michelle is heart-wrenching.

The way that Angela even weaves in the Christian elements of the story isn't hamfisted and patronizing. The story of Eli, Asher and Angel's faith grounds them in moving forward, even when God's plans make know sense to them at the present moment.

One of my favorite lines in Seek is:

"Just pray. Try to listen to God, not what you're trying to tell yourself."

This line is amazing and something that I will be holding onto in my own relationship with God.

Overall, I'd give Seek by Angela R Watts a 5 out of 5 stars.

Heartfelt, raw, and unflinching, Seek is ab uncompromising thriller with a focus on abuse and survival. It's a brave story that is superbly written. The themes of family, betrayal, love, and harm underpin a fast-paced story that held my focus till the end.

fast-paced thriller. didn't want to put it down. looking forward to the sequel. :)

only quibbles:
- at some points, it was overly preachy, but as the foreword said, the author wrote the book to help her deal with personal struggles. so, i wasn't too bothered by it.
- still confused about Viktor's purpose / motivation for kidnapping Angel.

Okay, how do I talk about this book?
It was a fun book to read. Very action-packed, kept me on my toes. I love how personal this was to Angela. I think that enhanced the reading, as it came across so much more emotional. The writing was what I expected from an earlier Angela and I think it was still really good. I'm looking forward to the relaunch of this novel. The physical copy definitely has its flaws.
