Yellowstone Romance #3

Yellowstone Awakening

Rate this book
Book 3 in the Yellowstone Romance Series

A tender, heartfelt love story . . .

A man willing to risk everything, including his life and all he's worked for, to free the woman he loves from an impossible situation.

Kyle Russell has worked with prominent men, led scouting expeditions through the Yellowstone country, and irritated more than a few Indian braves, but he will never duplicate his father's legendary accomplishments. Captured by a group of Crow warriors, his plans of escape are derailed when a lone white woman is brought into camp.

Kate Ellen Devereaux is on the run. Her guardian is dead, and she is lost in the Yellowstone wilderness. Found by an Indian war party, she is brought into their camp and thrown at the feet of a white captive. If he has plans of escape, she won't be left behind.

Kyle's father may be a legend in the territory, but he never had to deal with an eastern lady full of secrets, a woman who disrupts Kyle's plans to see the Yellowstone area turned into a national park. Convincing her that they are destined to be together may be a greater challenge than gaining support for the park movement. Kate can't afford to show interest in any man, regardless of her growing attraction to her backwoods rescuer. Will her ultimate reason for rejecting him spell doom for their growing love, and the national park idea, or can Kyle find a way to rescue both?

I never thought I'd be a writer, much less publish a book some day. I always wanted to be a veterinarian. I guess life just had other plans for me. When my husband and I decided to start a family, vet school pretty much went out the window. I used to work with a vet who had three children while going through vet school. To this day, she is my hero.

I live with my husband and two teenage sons in southern California. I have a Welsh pony and a miniature horse (down-sized from a barn of six horses). A crazy Labrador retriever who is a food vacuum, three cats, two parakeets, four bearded dragons (my compromise with my sons when they wanted a snake), and a small flock of chickens complete our menagerie of critters. I can’t imagine my life without my animals. My dream is to live in Montana some day.

Four years ago, I began writing a story that, for whatever reason, was stuck in my head for almost a year. I have been an avid romance reader for a long time, and the idea took hold to - why not? - write my own! What a simple idea, right?
It has been a long and difficult journey from my first sentence to a completed, and hopefully polished, manuscript. Today, I have a completed series of 5 books and a novella in what I called The Yellowstone Romance Series, two books in my new Second Chances Time Travel Romance Series, and I am currently working on the final book in a trilogy set in the Grand Tetons.

3.5/5

Kate Ellen Deveraux is on the run from an abusive older husband. The guide she paid to take her away perishes in the geyser area of soon-to-be Yellowstone National Park. Alone on her own, she eventually stumbles into a band of Crow Indians and is taken as a slave.

Kyle finds Kate when he's taken by the Crow Indians. He manages to escape and takes Kate with him, knowing that she would be sold to a trapper or worse if he didn't. He plans on taking her to his parents in Virginia City (the H/h from book 2) because he has no use for a city-bred woman in the wilderness. He's working hard to get Congress to make the whole region into a national park so that greedy developers won't destroy the landscape. He just didn't plan on falling in love with her before that could happen.

I despise a weak heroine. Hate them. Liars even more. That's a personal issue but it still colors my reviews. I realize that not every woman can be strong all the time and that's understandable, but being constantly weak willed and helpless is an eye roller for me. "Katelyn" (as Kyle calls her) had every opportunity to share her real story and didn't until it was too late and caused massive heartache. She also has some martyr-like tendencies which came into play near the end and OMG save me! No one loves a martyr.

The story, the hero and even Kate could have been much better, maybe even a close 5 stars for me, if it were not for Kate's behavior. On the plus side, there is a sneak peak at the next book and I'm totally looking forward to it.

This woman is AMAZING!! I have now given up on thinking the next book can't possibly beat the previous ones. Just when I thought for sure that Sarah and Chase were my "favorites" I read this book. Now Kyle and Kate Ellen are my favorites. I love how Kyle refuses to give her up. It's wonderful to see such believable devotion in a book. When they get back to Virginia City and that Shane character recognizes Kate I almost cried! I rooted so hard for these two and then when Kyle was shot and fell out the window I thought I would never recover from the shock. So wonderful. To the very last word!!

This one didn't quite live up to expectations for me (especially since book 2 is one of my all-time favorites). While the idea for the story had a lot of potential, it didn't pull me in like the previous books did. I think the trouble came from not enough care being taken in the building of Kate and Kyle's relationship, which in turn led to my inability to connect with them. There were no big scenes that really showed me why they loved each other. Plus, Kate came across as a bit of a wet noodle :) and though I should have felt sorry for her plight as a battered woman on the run, I didn't. I'm not sure if the author chose not to pull at the reader's heartstrings or wasn't capable of it. Either way, Kate didn't inspire any sympathy in me. Kyle's character wasn't much better; he was pretty one-dimensional.

Having said that, will I continue to read this series? Definitely. This author is capable of great things!

Yellowstone Romance series

Wow I loved it Kyle and Kate he brings her out of herself makes her a much stronger person and you watch her character unfold from a quiet withdraw women into a determine strong headed person able to then deal with her struggles. I loved how the book helps us understand how yellowstone on 1st March 1872 became the world's first National Park. A fab read and I would encourage you all to try this series I am sure you would not be disappointed.

Yellowstone Awakening

Loved the third book in the Yellowstone series. This one didn't have the time travel storyline but was with Kyle the son of Chase and Sara. Kyle saves a women from the Indians. Kate was trying to escape her old life when her escort dies. Meeting Kyle saves her and allows her to feel things she has never felt before. Her last is catching up.

Oh I just loved this story. I read back in 2013 and I had thought I had put a review on here, but sadly I did not. I am so happy I found her and all of her stories, it tore at my heart, made me cry, and gave me hope. Yes, it is just a story, but it is such a good story. Every single one of them are.

Yellowstone Awakening (Yellowstone #3)
By: Peggy L Henderson
5/5 stars

Kyle Russell is the youngest child of Chase & Sarah Russell, and a grandson to Daniel & Aimee Osborne. Due to his dad’s legendary status as a mountain man, and a white man who was able to outrun & escape a tribe of Blackfoot warriors, Kyle always felt overshadowed. He felt like he would always be judged against his dad and that there was no way he’d possibly be able to measure up. This left him feeling desolate at times. But he was determined to carve out his own life in the Madison Valley training horses with his cousin Josh and leading scouting expeditions through the Yellowstone countryside. We also learn that Kyle’s parents, along with Josh’s dad Samuel have moved to Virginia City & own general store there.

Kate Ellen Devereaux grew up in high society Boston with money for anything she wanted and servants to wait on her every whim. It was also a life highly devoid of true love. After the death of her father, her mother runs through his money & agrees to a marriage contract for Kate Ellen to her father’s abusive business partner. Afraid that he’ll eventually beat her to death, she has been searching for an escape. She finds it, but then she also finds a new bout of trouble. After the death of her guide, she wanders the Yellowstone wilderness alone, until she is found by a party of Crow Indians & thrown at the feet of their other captive, Kyle Russell.

Kyle spends plenty of time trying to delve into all that Kate Ellen is and learn her secrets. She guards her secret tightly because under law, she would have to be returned to her husband. She is determined not to complain and learn how to survive the harsh land because she doesn’t want to be returned to her mother or her husband. She knows that she also can’t give herself freely to Kyle under the law or God’s eyes, even though that is what she wants more than anything else in the world.

Kyle & Kate Ellen have a long & difficult road ahead of them because divorces weren’t hear of during their time without strong evidence to prove extreme wrongdoing and Kate Ellen’s husband has money, power & friends in high places and won’t let her go without a fight.

It was great reading how Yellowstone was preserved and not turned into some commercialized money making fiasco, because that's what it would have been, instead of the beautiful park it is today.

I was sadden to see that by this book Daniel and Aimee were already deceased but their children and grandchildren are all mentioned and a few make appearances. It was amazing to see a grown up version of Chase and Sarah and seeing them interact with two of their four children.

Kyle was a strong character, he definitely took after his father and grandfather. He worked hard to prove himself but I felt that wasn't necessary because he really didn't need to be just like his dad, he was his own man, with his own beliefs. He fought hard for preserving his home in Yellowstone and he fought extra hard for Katelyn!

Katelyn...well she started off so weak, I just couldn't stand her. I felt horrible for her because of what she had to endure at her husband's hands, no female should ever have to fear a man like that. It took almost the entire book before she actually found her backbone and began to stand up for herself! I couldn't have been happier for her b/c she was genuinely a really sweet girl, but she literally cried throughout the whole book and that just frustrated me to no end. She was so different from Aimee and Sarah...

That's why this time I gave four stars instead of five because I hate weak heroines, as a woman, I just can't fathom the idea of crying 24/7 and just being so weak all the time, I commend her for her bravery towards the end though, she definitely did begin to grow a pair...

Yellowstone Awakening is book 3 of the Yellowstone Romance Series by Peggy Henderson. I enjoyed revisiting with our old friends the Osborne family. I realize due to the timeline of when the story is based that Dan and Aimee (book 1) have since passed away but I still had to wipe a tear upon learning of their loss.

This story involving Kate and Kyle was a sweet, gentle romance with no love scenes. The story starts off with a bang with first Kyle and then Kate being captured by the Crow War Chief Laughing Badger. The plot does slow down for a few chapters in the middle but soon the storyline picks up and it starts to get dicey for Kate and Kyle. We are left wondering for most of the story if these two will ever get the happily ever after they richly deserve.

I loved watching Kate come out of her shell and grow into a strong, determined woman. Kyle was extremely gentle and patient with Kate and helped her to grow into the woman she became although I must say a scene later on in the story between him and Samuel was well deserved. I won’t spoil the story for anyone but let’s just say in my opinion, Kyle got off way too easy.

Overall, Yellowstone Awakening is another great installment in the Yellowstone Romance Series and I cannot wait to read about Josh and Danica (both of whom we meet here) in Yellowstone Dawn.

First off, I adore this series and I'm looking forward to finishing off book four and five soon. I couldn't put any of the first three down once I picked them up.

Unlike the first two in the series, Yellowstone Awakening has no time travel and the resulting complications of adjusting to a new way of life due to a span of 200 years. However, in YA, there is a socio-economic span of very wealthy to mountain man which presents its challenges for the hero and heroine. Then there are the emotional issues for the heroine, a secret she keeps, and the growth she goes through as her character overcomes adversity. In other words, there is enough angst here to make me happy as a romance reader. :-)

I only have two little gripes which dropped this from a 5 to a 4 star. First off, I was very bummed in the first few pages to discover that the hero and heroine from the first book had died. I loved those two and it really impacted my enjoyment of YA for the first approximately 1/3 of the book--at the same point when I fell in love with Katelyn, the heroine of YA. Yes, I get that time had passed, and it makes sense that people die, but still... I can think of a few ways the storyline could have included those characters as old folk.

Second, YA ended just a tad too short. I needed a consummation of Kyle and Katelyn's marriage/love for one another. I also wanted Katelyn's mom to get her comeuppance.

A lot of typos! Example (which happens a lot) "he" instead of "she" & many more. If you are a stickler for this, you might get frustrated.

Also, if you have had to deal with domestic abuse, this story may be too close to home...

Otherwise read these in order & enjoy. I really love this author & how the twists & turns come...

Can't wait for book 4!

If you enjoy time travel & romance, you should give it a try. If you know Yellowstone Park, it might make it even better...

Order:
Yellowstone Heart Song (book 1) - 2010/1810 - Aimee Donovan (2010) & Daniel Osborne
Yellowstone Christmas (short story) - 1816-ish - Aimee & Daniel
Yellowstone Redemption (book 2) - 2035/1835 - Chase Russell (2035) & Sarah Osborne
Yellowstone Promise (short story) - 1836 - Chase & Sarah & baby Emily
Yellowstone Homecoming (short story) - 1838 - Matthew Osborne & Adelle Witmer (Della or Addy)
Yellowstone Season of giving (short story) - 1850 thanksgiving with flashback to 1805 - Elk Runner & Little Bird
Yellowstone Awakening (book 3) - 1871 - Kyle Russell & Kate Ellen Devereaux
Yellowstone Dawn (book 4) - 1877 - Danica Jensen & Josh Osborne
Yellowstone Deception (book 5) - 2010/1810 - Jana & Dan Osborne
Yellowstone Origins (book 6) - 1749 - Cameron (2036) & Riley Bernard (2011)

I love the way Peggy L. Henderson describes her characters and their interactions as well as the scenery in such vivid detail. I have never been interested in time travel books, I chose to read this book because of the setting in the Yellowstone Park. I was surprised to find out it was a time travel book. I continued on with it and when I came to the end, had to go for the next book, so far I have read three in this series. They are very good and the setting is something that I am familiar with.

I enjoyed the first two in this series, so I looked for Yellowstone Awakening, it was good too. Not the time travel like the others but good.

Although there was no time travel in this story, it was an action packed adventure.
I have a difficult time with stories that contain domestic violence. I was also not pleased that the judge who ruled in her favor didn't award her any damages for her ordeal. Her vile mother and Deveraux went unpunished for the harm they caused her. I really enjoyed the way that Kyle's family rallied around Kate immediately after finding out her secret. Kate's bit of espionage in honor of her lost love was very well written.

Kyle and Kate make a good romance story. The first part of the book was alittle slow ,but the rest of the book had a good story. I do wish it was a time travel story though, which it was not. I did miss the surprises and excitement that the first two books had in this series. The abuse reminders in this story left me with a bad feeling not happy and wanting more of the story like the first two books did. I Give this a 3.5 Stars.

I really enjoyed this story because of the characters. To me they were very well developed and I could clearly see them in my mind. I did miss the time travel component, but I still enjoyed the book. One of the things I really enjoy about Peggy's writing is the historical components she includes. They are well thought out and well researched. Reading a book by this author is relaxing and enjoyable. Each time I find myself pulled in to the story so much that I can't stop until I'm finished.

Beautiful love story.

This series is a magical read. I savor every book even though I want to gobble them up now. I wait until I need to read an uplifting book, then reach for the next book in the series. These books never fail to deliver. The characters are well defined and relatable. There is good drama, racing scary scenes, romantic love without all the angst of deeply broken characters. Yellowstone Romance Series is truly delightful.

This is about Kyle Russell the son of Sarah and Chase Russell. Grandson of Aimee and Daniel. He meets Kate Devereaux when they are both captured by Crow Indians. Kate is running away from a abusive husband. I love how the author puts real Montana history in these books. The love story is good and clean. It has it’s good and bad guys. The charters have their struggles. Loved it.

This is the third book in a series of five. A time travel story about Yellowstone Park. I have loved them all. The first book starts with a travel back in history and the rest continue with a different part of the family. Once I start reading it is different to put it down. I enjoy reading about the history of Yellowstone and how the people cope with the change.

Loved the first two books, the story and the characters couldn't put them down. This one did not feel the same about. Feel in love with Kyle from the beginning and Josh. But Kate I never quite got a grip on. The women in the other books were strong willed and easy to relate but not Kate. Had trouble grasping her character. Over all a good read just not as good as the first two.

Very low 3. It took me forever to finish it. I wanted to put DNF and toss it. If this had been the first book of the series I wouldn't have continued the series. I liked the first two books so I will pick up the rest of the series.

Book three

Much better than book two. Loving learning about the early days of Yellowstone national park. In my previous life I must have lived in the pioneer days. I love the Indians and their primitive way of life. Ready for book four. These books are full of Indians and love.
