Bailing Out

Rate this book
Gabriel Power came to Sochi with two goals: win a medal and track down his ex-girlfriend so he can finally explain the truth about the scandal that came between them. Once that’s done, he’s going to disappear. Snowboarding’s bad boy is tired of the phony photo ops set up by his media mogul father. Getting hounded by reporters and pretending to date supermodels while running errands for Power News cost him the only girl he’s ever loved, and now it’s time to walk away.

Quitting his father will be easy. Bailing on snowboarding will be slightly harder. Getting Belle to forgive him may be impossible, but he has to try.

Isabelle Garland’s Olympic dream died the night a drunk driver plowed into her car and crushed her leg. Sochi was supposed to be her moment of glory, but instead she’s limping around the Village trying to dodge the snowboarder who broke her heart and avoid the interviews her pushy sister-slash-manager insists are vital for building her brand. Belle doesn’t want a brand, she wants a life. Preferably one far away from the rude reporters who keep trying to get America’s Skating Sweetheart to cry on camera by asking how it feels when your entire life is snatched away in an instant.

(Spoiler: it feels like s***. Also, she’s more snark than sweet these days.)

When she runs into Gabe in the basement of her hotel, Belle’s first instinct is to flee. Too bad they’re trapped in a freezing storage room together with no way out and only their chemistry to keep them warm…

Excerpt:

If the rooms upstairs are four star, this place is a negative seven.

Negative eight if any rats show up, which is a distinct possibility.

Examining every inch of it takes me about thirty seconds, and after that there’s nothing to look at except her. I start at her feet, snug in those big furry boots, which is lucky since the temperature in here is dropping fast. Her black stockings and short black skirt don’t look nearly as cozy, and are a far cry from the jeans she used to favor, but I guess a lot has changed for both of us. She’s wrapped up in a black wool coat, the belt cinched tight around her waist, emphasizing the gentle curve of her hips.

In another life I would grab the ends of that belt and pull her toward me before unwrapping her like a shiny present under the tree on Christmas morning. Instead, I jam my hands in my pockets and make myself meet her eyes. She’s checking me out as well, lips flashing up in a quick smile when she sees I’m wearing the Red Sox hat she gave me, and she flushes when I catch her looking. The deep pink starts in the apples of her cheeks and spreads down to disappear under the collar of her coat, but she keeps her gaze steady.

“I know it wasn’t your idea,” she whispers.

I tilt my head forward to hear because she’s practically mouthing the words, like she’s afraid someone is listening.

“I figured that out by the time I got back to my room,” she continues.

“Then why didn’t you pick up your phone?” I keep my voice as quiet as hers, and she shuffles two tiny steps toward me, then stops and plants her feet, like she’s determined to go no farther. We stare at each other across the room. Close enough to touch hands if we stretched our fingers forward, but oh so far away.

I force myself to keep standing straight as the memories hit me. Curled up behind Belle in that huge-ass bed in the Moscow hotel room, waking up hard and happy with the soft curve of her ass pressed back against my dick, pushing that glorious hair to the side and trailing kisses down the back of her neck until she was moaning and wiggling against me… It was our first night together and the first and only time I ever woke up with another person in my bed.

The World Skating Championships were supposed to be held in Japan that year, but there was an earthquake ten days before the event was scheduled to start so it was postponed a month and moved to Moscow, which meant I could come watch Belle compete. She took gold, reclaiming her place in the top spot after missing the Vancouver Olympics due to an injury. I convinced her to take a week off and go to the Ile de Joie with me afterwards, seven days of wandering the twisty cobbled streets where my mom grew up and seven nights of Belle in my bed. I’d just won my first major competition and I was taking a vacation with my girl. Life was perfect.

But on our first morning her phone rang.

My heart starts beating faster at the memory and my stomach twists, remembering the way I ran to the toilet and threw up after she stormed out of the room.

“Don’t answer,” I’d murmured, smiling at her moan as I slid a hand up the smooth skin of her stomach to cup the warm weight of her breast.

“It’s not important,” I told her as my fingers teased her nipple and it hardened to a tight bud, ready for my tongue.

“Stay with me,” I’d begged her as she pulled away a moment later, just enough to reach for her phone. Her other hand snaked back to stroke my dick, and it felt so good that I closed my eyes, lost in the dream of waking up with the only woman I’d ever loved.

Then she went stiff in my arms and screamed, and the dream turned into a nightmare.

Characters (A Simple Outline):

Power Family:

Gabriel: Older son to Reginald Power and older brother to Jake Power. The badboy, the rebellious and charismatic guy, also a snowboarding champion. He often wishes to get out of his situation but is forced to sit and do nothing until a solution arrives. He cares a lot about Isabelle, and his brother and wishes to help those who he loves.

Reginald: Father to sons Gabriel and Jake. Is a control freak, cares about money only, and controls everyone around him, with dirty tricks up his sleeve.

Jake: Younger son of Reginald Power and younger brother of Gabriel Power.

Garland Family:

Isabelle: Younger sister to Zoe Garland. Is an ex-skater due to injuries, loves her sister and family but also wants out of the nightmares involving her career and life, but till then has to sit back down and wait. She still cares about Gabriel despite previous circumstances, loves her sister Zoe despite her pushing and is protective and independant about her life and the people involved.

Zoe: Older sister to Isabelle Garland. Is the ex-manager of Isabelle’s skating career. She cares about her sister but often puts career first then family.

Other:

Kimmy: A news reporter set up by Isabelle’s sister and manager Zoe to help Isabelle with her career. Can be pushy and willing to push forward her own career.

Catie: A former colleague of Isabelle, she will do anything to sabotage Isabelle and make her career go forward.

Reginald Power’s Wife: Is wife to Reginald Power, mother to Gabriel and Jake. Separated from Reginald and later dead after a serious illness.

Morgan: A former colleague of Isabelle, he supports her during her troubled times. A friend of Isabelle’s as well. A professional skater.

Isabelle Garland’s Mother: Mother to Zoe and Isabelle. Was very involved during Isabelle’s career.

Alejandra Lopez: Acquaintance of Gabriel Power. Influential in Reginald Power’s career through her father.

My Opinion:

What I Liked: There is independence, understanding, loving, funny, sexy moments in this book. Through Isabelle’s eyes we see struggle and freedom of independence which when she’s at a high point in her career, she never gets. I understand that often as we succeed in a certain field or place, there are certain expectations built and then the play is no longer for our enjoyment, but for every public eye to see and critique. We are in pressure and pushed to the highest limits and if we fail in case as Isabelle’s accident, then we are no longer considered normal people, we are either famous or we’re garbage. There’s no way around it.

There is understanding as I see in the book, when Isabelle is finally getting to leave with Gabriel and gets her independence and makes her sister realize as well, that not everything is about career, money or the reputation. They are important factors but at the same time, you have to love to do your job right and to understand that there are other ways to live a happy career or life. And she tries to make this understanding with her sister, who after a few pages in the book, then begrudgingly understands. It’s important that people who are close to us understand what our dreams are too, to really understand us.

The above points also go with Gabriel who is tied with his father’s manipulative and cunning nature. A champion at skateboarding, he’s won but at the cost of losing the one he loved, Isabelle. He only stays with his father as to save his younger brother but then understands that some sacrifices are not just sacrifices but a force against what we believe or love.

And let’s not forget the very mushy but very electrifying moments between Isabelle and Gabriel. Hehe, we all gotta love em. Steamy, spicy and a bit comedic, they are moments which truly tie in with the book.

Things I would love to see: Probably more of Gabriel and Isabelle’s personality as this being a short book didn’t really let us see a lot in the book.

Favourite Quote: “I should tell her that I loved her. That I still love her. That I wanted to come tearing across the world after her.”

My Rating: 4.5/5

Recommendation: Definitely recommend as it provides everything from loveable funny moments, to gain the freedom over ourselves and reach the stars with the person we love, breaking all expectations.

Thank you all for reading.

Ultimately I give this book 2.5 stars. I enjoyed the story line, but it wasn’t enough for me. Belle and Gabe were strong characters who each have a past I wanted to know more of. Carrie Quest already had intriguing events within the book, I just wish she would have dug a little deeper. Bailing Out had so much potential, but I needed more.

This book is about a former Olympic skater, Isabelle Garland, and Olympic snowboarder, Gabriel Power, who are individually trying to move forward from the past and change their future. Belle and Gabe’s relationship ended three years ago after one of the best nights and worst mornings of their lives.

Belle was America’s Skating Sweetheart, but a tragic car accident crushed her leg and ended her dreams. She is still very well-known within the industry and across America, so her sister / manager retained a job for Belle as a show announcer that features former Olympians and professional skaters. Belle’s sister forces her to go to Sochi to participate in interviews making her endure interrogation from reporters and skaters.

I can’t control the stories other people tell about me; all I can do is live my own story the best I can.

Gabe is a bad-boy waiting for his next photo op in the prime of his career. In reality, he is just trying to avoid the wrath of his father and waiting for the right opportunity to call it quits.

While in Sochi, Belle and Gabe literally run into each other in the basement of the hotel. They end up trapped in a closet and are forced to discuss the disastrous night that occurred three years ago when their relationship ended without even a goodbye.

This was my first time reading anything from Carrie Quest. Since it was a novella, I plan on giving Carrie another shot in hopes that her novels are more expansive than this novella was.

4.25 stars.

Ahh! This book is exactly what romance writing is all about, at least for me. I love a second chance lovers/forced proximity trope, definitely a favorite. I detract 3/4 of a star for this being a novella instead of a full length story! That’s so annoying! The story is so so good and well written. Everything was set up to keep going. I wanted to see how all the drama unfolded. All the questions I don’t have answers to. Will Gabe’s father keep his word? Will Gabe find more information about his mother? What’s his brother like? What’s Jake in school for? And what will become of Isabelle’s new life? What passions will she find in her new freedom from her sister and the life she’s ready to leave behind? I feel robbed... but in a good, still partially sated way? The love in this story is SOOOOOOO satisfying, and I really hope to get an extension of this story from novella into novel someday in the future, and that’s big for me since sports stories aren’t really my jam. I’m definitely going to check out some more of Carrie’s work!

I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

If you’re in the mood for something quick and cute, I would recommend it. I think this was a cute novella, however it wasn’t very original. I just felt that I’ve read the same story time and time again, controlling parents ruining lives.

This was my first read by this author, and have to say I really enjoyed this novella and I shall be definitely be reading the rest of this series!

I absolutely love a second chance romance story, and this was everything I love in a written romance. A perfect combination of well-written, superb, likeable main characters and a great storyline along with hot, steamy love scenes with a happy ending. Absolutely swoon and so many feels!

I am giving this four stars, only because I loved the story so much I wish it was longer and wanted to get to know Gabe and Belle and a bigger backstory, rather than a novella which made it too fast-paced for my liking. I really hope Carrie Quest considers revisiting these two characters in a future book hopefully in a novel, just because I feel personally that there are some unanswered questions.

That said I cannot wait to read more in this series!

Gabriel and Isabelle have a hot and tainted history. There were too may factors that interfered where they did not belong. Now, trapped together in Russia, they get another chance to clear the air.

Isabelle AKA "Belle" has had too many hard knocks in recent years to believe that Gabe would want to get back together. Then the chance arises to find out just what really broke them up last time. After finding out the truth, can they both learn to forgive?

This was such a fast paced, but really hot story. I loved the characters right from the start. They seem like they are better together than apart. This was a great intro to the Snow-Crossed Lovers series. I am very excited now for the next installment!

It's crazy how much competitive sports is about the image of the competitors "off the ice" rather than it is when they are actually competing... Image is what keeps Americas skating sweetheart and snowboardings bad boy apart for so long after some compromising images are leaked and they both have managers/family who will do whatever it takes to keep their image intact even if it means bribing them to stay away from one another. Already questioning what they are doing and ready to go against their managers wishes/demands, all that stops when they end up trapped in a basement storage room where they confess their still present feelings.

Sports romances seem to be my latest lust at the moment. All those ripped abs on the covers.

But away from the drool-worthy abs, this novella is a sweet read about second chances and the evils of power hungry family members. Why is it we always end up letting them rule our lives and then figure out years later they screwed us over?

Gabe and Belle find each other in the most unlikely of places (her not him) and get trapped together for a while so they have no choice but to "talk it out". While it feels like they made up pretty fast, I need to remember that it is a novella. Would have loved a little more about them... but oh well, one can't have everything.

Bailing Out is a prequel to the new series Snow-Crossed Lovers by Carrie Quest who also happens to be a new author to me, after reading this short story I was wondering why hadn’t I read any of her books before and that I needed to read the first full length novel in the series.
This short story has a lot going for it, great characters, a great plot, it’s well written, it’s got just the right pace and it’s a second chance romance which happens to be one if my favourite genres.. Looking forward to reading the next book

I enjoyed the fast pace of this novella. It provides enough of a back story of both main characters and is well written. It has everything that makes a great romance, a bit of drama, lots of love, steamy sex scene and a happy ending. I could for sure see this turned into a full length novel or at least a second novella to get updates of these characters. I've never read anything by Carrie Quest before but I'll be sure to check out more of her work after read this. I'm definitely interested in reading more of the Snow Crossed Lovers series.

Great novella!

This was a great read. I really enjoyed Belle & Gabe’s story. It was short, but still had so many emotions. I can’t wait to read Carrie’s next book. I already pre-ordered the next one that comes out in December 2022.

If you haven’t read this author yet, you are missing out.

Technically this is book #1 but it was released after book #2 “Dropping in” and #3 “Wiping Out” in this series. I read them in the order they were released and it worked great. You can also read them in order with no issue.

I really enjoyed this novella by Carrie Quest! It was my first read by the author and I will definitely be checking it the rest is the series!

Isabelle, the broken ice dancer and Gabe, the snowboarding king made the perfect second-chance romance couple! The rekindling was sweet, the sex was very hot and the desire to step out of the spotlight while going against their controlling families, was the perfect ending.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest reader review.

This second chance at romance is sweet and sexy. Isabelle is an ex ice skater and Gabe is a snowboarding king and he is inSochi to win a medal and trying to see Isabelle and close that chapter in his life and move away from fame and his family. Can they both what they want or will they rekindle what they had? I love what Carrie Quest did with this story and I am looking forward to the chapter of it.

Bailing out a second chance at romance.
It's a shirt, quick novella that has you sucked in immediately at first word with the mystery surrounding their relationship. The problem I have is it's too short. There wee many questions I had that were still unanswered at the finality of the book. Like, I would have liked the author to give more details surrounding her accident. More details about each of them.
All in all it was a cute book.

3.5 rounded up.
For a first effort, the writing style was very impressive. And as I don't usually enjoy novellas either, the 4 stars is saying something. This was done well, enough to draw me into the story and enjoy the characters. While I wish it had been a full length novel to delve into the story more, I was satisfied overall.
Will definitely be continuing the series.

This book was a fun and easy read. I was a little unsure at first but the synopsis was interesting enough for me to give it a try. The characters were okay, nothing too deep but you see the character development between the two main characters and how being together really helped them. If you like an easy, fun, sport book read, this is the book for you.

This is a cute little reunion/makeup story. If this book was longer and had more backstory or the future of these two I would probably rate it higher because at the moment you are just thrown into the story and it kinda had an abrupt ending.

Overall, a great read if you only have an hour or two.
