Born in Scotland, Made in Bradford sums up Liz Mistry’s life. Liz uses her experiences of living and working in the inner city to flavour her writing. Her gritty crime fiction police procedural novels set in Bradford embrace the city she describes as ‘Warm, Rich and Fearless’ whilst exploring the darkness that lurks beneath.
Struggling with severe clinical depression and anxiety for a large number of years, Liz often includes mental health themes in her writing. Being a debut novelist in her fifties was something Liz had only dreamed of and she counts herself lucky, whilst pinching herself regularly to make sure it’s all real. One of the nicest things about being a published author is chatting with and responding to readers’ feedback and Liz regularly does events at local libraries, universities, literature festivals and open mics. She also teaches creative writing too.

Amateurish.

I bought three of Liz’s Di Gus McGuire books and must admit that I struggled to read them.
I managed the first one but have given up quite early on in the second.
I just don’t like the style of writing. It failed to flow for me, and I found myself disliking her main characters.
I want a writer to endear their heroes and heroines to me. These completely lacked any depth and I just couldn’t bear to read any more.
While I appreciate that she has attempted to show how ‘it is’ within the Police Service in the UK, she really needs to research her subject more.
The frequent swearing and poorly-written dialogue left me cold.
I’m not a prude by any means (GoT is my favourite TV series) but it was as if she was just throwing words into the conversation that didn’t add anything to it other than trying to be hip.
The editing was pretty lacking too - with characters jumping between Detective Sergeant, Constable and, in the second book, Ms Hussain leaping from DC to DI within a couple of months.
On the whole, although the story lines were quite clever, the lack of decent style and editing let them down badly.
Not for me.

I had another go at reading these and found them all far too long and drawn out. The writing is not nearly compelling enough. I am tired of book authors just doing unspeakable things to their characters. And the boring mention of racism when there is no such thing. Culture is what makes us different. Perhaps it may have been more compelling to deal with real crime of the century -that of the muslim grooming gangs.

Simply Superb!

Liz Mistry is in my humble opinion up there with top British authors of this genre. Unquiet Souls, Uncoiled Lies and Untainted Blood the first three books in this fabulous series are a must read if you enjoy crime and police procedures. Reading offensive racist language is never easy but is sometimes necessary to understand that even now in 2022 some people still believe is OK to use.
I highly recommend this author and I am looking forward to starting book 4. Barbara Sheffield x.

I loved the first two books in this series but I struggled to keep interested in the third book. I have just, bought books 4 to 6 so I do like the way this lady writes. Becoming a bit bored with Gus being such a wimp though. He has started to suffer panic attacks, is always in pain, and becomes nauseous at autopsies. I like my detectives to be a bit tougher than Gus, but I shall perservere.

My best new series of the year

These three books are a blockbuster start to a series that is very relevant to our times. Ms Mistry has introduced a focus on race relations, bigotry and hatred that is a wake-up call to readers in all countries coupled with very compelling characters and story lines. I look forward to the rest of the series.

Great characters!

I enjoyed getting to know the characters and figuring out the plots. I do wish the author had employed a better editor, though, because there are many small punctuation and other errors.
