This book was boring enough for me to stop in the middle to download and play a game first before continuing to the end.

I didn't expect that the story would be taken in this direction. Granted, I've forgotten the first two stories, so maybe there were already some signs of it? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

IMO, the case this time highlighted the sexual aspect of it rather than the elemental one. It's hard not to get bored with the story when Mari (and Jake in response) repeated the same things over and over again. It's also hard to like this story when Mari and Jake flirted with the idea of cheating (they did kiss the other guy) in the name of catching some criminals where they're not even cops or PIs.

This is my review of Surfacing Secrets, Elementals Book 3, from my M/M Romance Books Blog, OJ He Say.

OJ He Say

SURFACING SECRETS

I have loved each of the two previous books in this series, patiently waiting for the next one, and I must say this is the best one yet. I won’t get into specifics here as I will address those later on in my review, however suffice it to say that these two writers have hit their stride and it shows through in this excellent 3rd book!

THE CHARACTERS

Jake Chivis:

“…he was drawn to him in a way that went beyond his good looks. Although, admittedly, Jake’s dark curls and big brown eyes, and that honest to goodness amazing body, were certainly not a small factor in the attraction. Just thinking about Chivis in a state of undress had him more turned on than a hundred smutty video links.”

Ilmarinen (Mari) Gale:

Mari pulled in a harder gasp and tilted his head back, his pants and briefs around his hard-muscled thighs, shoulders pulled back by the restraints. He looked so beautiful like that, all sleek skin and sculpted muscles, like a renaissance sculpture.

THE STORY REVIEW

The stories are so well paced in this series that I can’t even describe. They are following right in sequence, at the logically measured timing of a real life relationship progression. Jake and Mari’s relationship is progressing more and more into the revelation of those three dreaded little words that we all adore to hear in our MC’s and in Surfacing Secrets this devilishly matched writing duo of Quinn/Bermingham delivers in spades.

Jake’s and Mari’s relationship is blossoming along with their sexual escapades with each other and each progressive sex scene is hotter, wilder, more intense than the next. Holy Erotica, Batman! That last, ending sex scene? I though my poor Kindle was going to melt and warp right in my hands.

Add to this hot writing the overarching story of who is committing these heinous murders and just how are they carrying them out, along with Mari’s addiction and Jake’s still unrevealed past, throw in some jealousy in the form of Cordiline and Colm and you’ve got one hell of a story.

THE WRITING

Truly magic is afoot when these two writers pair up. I have so far enjoyed this series so much and each new book is truly better than the other one. The stories progress at a measured, enjoyable pace, not beyond belief fast or dragged out needlessly. The editing is superb, no hiccups or typos, which makes for the complete immersion experience I so enjoy in well written books.

Bring on Elemental Book Four!

THE DISCLAIMER

I would like to thank Bellora Quinn and Sadie Rose Bermingham and Pride Publishing for providing OJ He Say with a review copy in exchange for an honest review.

4 Stars!

Surfacing Secrets is book 3 in the Elemental Evidence series and it needs to be read in order. While I got away with jumping in and starting up with book 2, SS follows the storyline from Burning Boundaries, and truly, you'll be missing out otherwise.

Jake is still trying to deal with the events from the previous book and the fact that he is having trouble tapping into his psychic abilities, while investigating a new series of murders. In the meantime, Mari is having problems controlling himself when he's connected to any interface doing research and Jake is trying to help him, which might prove more difficult than any of them expected.

So, I said this before, but it's still true, I adore Jake, he's a fantastic character. Sweet, kind, relatable and he has the patience of a saint. I don't particularly care for Mari (and how odd is it to read about a character that shares my name? Let me tell you, very!). Unfortunately, I find him to be selfish and immature and truly, I have no clue what Jake sees in him. I just want to shake him or throat punch him, whatever comes first (maybe both). This time around we could add reckless to the list of reasons and oblivious since it wasn't until John pointed out some hard truths to him that he realized what he'd done. Now, even if I don't like Mari, I can admit that Jake and Mari make a good team, and had great chemistry, my problem is mostly that it's Jake who keeps bending to accommodate Mari and apologizing, when in my head it should be the other way around.

Overall, Surfacing Secrets was a very entertaining, intriguing, suspenseful read. If you've read the previous book(s), you know that they deal with some potentially triggering issues, but the authors don't go overboard with them. The writing was really good and seamless, the case was well-thought out and developed and I'm really hoping there will be more books in the future now that Jake and Mari finally seem to be on the same page concerning their relationship. Plus, I want more of John, there'll never be enough of him. ;)

Very recommendable!

Wow, Just wow! Since beginning this series, from Book #1 Breathing Betrayal, I had gotten the feeling that I was reading something special ! I love to read, I can picture the worlds I am brought to through reading. I adore love stories, I love mysteries. Most of all I dig the supernatural. What could be better than have it all wrapped up in one?

A few authors have made it impossible for me to ignore the carrot they dangle in front of me. Bellora Quinn and Sadie Rose Bermingham have leveled a BIG BIG Carrot…..with all of my wants in a single series…. which takes my breath away.

Please read the blurb about this book. Now you sort of know the premise. Now I will discuss what this book meant to me.

First the beautiful men…….Jake and Mari

Whew !!!! Be still my heart…..Each one of these young men is beautiful in his own way. Jake Chivis, is ruggedly handsome, working with his powers in England, meeting and falling for sinfully sexy Dr. Mari Gale. Their sexuality screams from the pages.

Our Jake is frustrated about his ‘gift’ no longer working. He is conflicted he will be fired from the job because of this. His fear is that he will lose Mari if he fails.

With Mari we have started to see, addiction. His riding the waves of the internet, traveling thru the circuits he finds thrilling. From one server to another searching till time and place means nothing. Losing himself into the dark web.

Our authors have taken this story to another level. It was great before, BUT now this becomes even Greater. The mystery is not only the killings, the murders and the horror of the deaths; but the story becomes what they are becoming and what it will do to their new relationship.. Will each find their own way back? OMG this is the best of the three ever.

These wonderful story tellers have taken another step into their character development of Jake and Mari. They have stripped each one down to their souls. The pain for the reader is significant. It hurts and is frightening as hell. Their pain, their deception, their love keeps you breathless. What a story!

Jake Chivis and Mari Gale’s relationship just took a major step forward even though Mari still deals with dyspareunia. They seem to be doing fine—until Mari uses his interfacing ability and discovers a snuff video. Mari can’t let go of what he saw, and as he becomes obsessed with the dark web, he and Jake find themselves face to face with death and danger. Jake is willing to get Detective Inspector John Cordiline involved—he doesn’t want Mari to get any deeper into the case and fears Mari will become addicted to his ability. Or worse.

Jake has fears about his own ability. He was given a drug that now has him running a temperature when he becomes angry. He doesn’t know how to get back his ability of touch impression nor how to deal with the fire element combination, and it could lead to him losing his job, being sent back to the states and, worse, losing Mari.

This third installment in the Elemental Evidence series sees Jake and Mari facing their own personal turmoil. The mystery is well-plotted and gradually, Mari discovers more and more of this horrid puzzle. The deception and mistrust weighs so heavily on their relationship that it seems they may never recover.

There are two outstanding secondary characters in this story, the first being Mari’s mom, Anni, who loves her son and tries to make him see reason. She also encourages Jake in his plight to help Mari and stay in his life. And Detective John Cordiline, who will do anything for Jake (who John has feelings for) even though he knows he doesn’t stand a chance. I have wondered if at some point Cordiline will find someone of his own. Tonka is also a delightful little dog that adds humor to the storyline.

I highly suggest reading books one and two in this series first—Breathing Betrayal and Burning Boundaries—to really comprehend the emotions that have built between Jake and Mari. I think they have a long way to go, so I’m interested to see where Quinn and Bermingham take this series next.

This series just gets better and better. It is so well written. Brings a different flavor of mystery and suspense, with hot as hell sex, but real relationships. Everything is not always hunky dory. It's very real. And i love that.

Jake gets woke up one morning from the police, telling him his next door neighbor is dead. It looks like a suicide. Mari is looking up stuff at his home to help with his problem during sex, when he runs across a snuff film that looks real. After Jake looks at it, he confirms that Mari is right. The police start the investigation and things begin to come together in ways they never thought. The next door neighbor wasn't a suicide and it's connected. Mari gets in too deep, to the point of death, Jake is terrified he's lost his 'powers’, and everything is getting too much. As they try to stop these killers, they realize things in their own lives need to change or things may fall apart.

I love Mari and Jake. But Mari, sometimes, I just want to smack lol. Ughhhhh. I know he's been through some things and he has a hard time with some things, but he pushes too hard with Jake sometimes. He's so afraid of letting people get too close that he constantly pushes Jake away. It hurts Jake so bad but Jake continues to love him. With everything they've been through, they have grown in some ways but this case pushes them both to the brink and I was pulling my hair out. The ups and downs, the near death experiences, the almost coming apart, it was killing me. Even though Mari can be a bit much at times, he's so good for Jake and Jake is so good for him. And when all the drama has gone away, they realize how good they are together.

I still recommend this series. It has everything you want in a book. And I can't wait to see if there is going to be a book 4. I really hope so.

Surfacing Secrets is the third book in the Elemental Evidence series, and I looked forward to reuniting with Jake and Mari to see how things have moved on for them. Mari is surfing online to try and find an answer to his 'problem'. Instead, he finds a video of someone being murdered. He shows it to Jake, who passes it on to the police, but it looks like Mari is finding it hard to stop connecting online. It is becoming an addiction, one he denies having.

I thoroughly enjoy these books! It isn't just romance, there is plenty here for everyone to enjoy. I do have to say though that Mari once again pings on my radar for acting like a jerk. The addiction part I tried to ignore, as he couldn't exactly control what he was saying or thinking at the time. But he does insist on knocking Jake down all the time, even in his thoughts. Poor Jake! I love his character, and although I can see the love he has for Mari, I just want it reciprocated. I am longing for the book where Mari doesn't act like an ass and becomes the man Jake deserves.

A story with a dark twist, told amazingly well by these two authors. With no editing or grammatical errors to disrupt my reading flow, it was simply Mari who jolted me. The flow was smooth, and the pacing perfect. I love the interaction between all of the characters, yes - even Mari and Jake. Absolutely recommended for those who love a bit of mystery mixed in with their paranormal.

I received an ARC from Pride Publishing of Elemental Evidence: Part One: A Box Set by Bellora Quinn & Sadie Rose Bermingham in return for an honest review. I’ve enjoyed books about psychics for a long time and this series definitely delivered! It was interesting to learn the different powers people could have based on the different elements such as Air and Water. More about these talents came out over the course of the three books. Watching how Jake and Mari interacted with the police and government agencies was often entertaining and humorous. I especially liked how their relationship evolved over the course of the series. My main critique is I know no one from Detroit who would think in British English after living there for a month and since I went to high school and college down the road from the Motor City, I’m speaking from experience. I even had to google some things Jake thought and I believed I was familiar with British English. Also, the series needs to come with a warning since BDSM plays a major role.

So the 'crime' in this book is darker than previous books, yet despite this, I really enjoyed this element to the book.
Following on from my review of book 2 I still feel that Mari needs to redeem himself. I found that his behaviour in this book was worse than book 2 and Jake's reaction (or lack of one in some instances) frustrated me. Part of me doesn't want to continue with the series as I'm not really 'enjoying' their relationship. I'll see how I feel when the next book comes out.

Surfacing Secrets (Elemental Evidence 3)
By Bellora Quinn and Sadie Rose Bermingham
Pride Publishing, 2018
Five stars

This third chapter in the saga of Ilmarinen Gale and Jake Chivis is even better than the first two. Why is that? Probably because I’ve gotten to know and like both Mari and Jake. They are young, brilliant, and endowed with psychic talents beyond the normal—but this makes them difficult as well as appealing. Both Mari and Jake have suffered at the hands of bad guys because of their talents, but they also suffer because they lack full understanding of how best to control and make use of their skills. I can’t delve into that in a review because it would spoil the fun; but it’s a powerful theme that both draws them together and pushes them apart.

The core of this story is Mari’s stumbling onto a dark website and seeing what he believes to be a snuff film. He is so horrified that he becomes obsessed with it, and draws Jake into his struggle not to get lost in his quest to solve the mystery.

What Quinn and Bermingham do so well is to write great characters, but also to weave complicated plotlines that are exciting and not confusing. For all their good looks and smarts, both Mari and Jake are self-sabotaging in the way that wounded people are. The reader roots for them to solve the mystery, but just as much for their relationship to survive the stresses of their complicated personalities. They are enormously appealing men, and their flaws are relatable to those of us who do not happen to have paranormal psychic powers.

For all its satisfying resolution, there clearly has to be more of these two men in the writers’ future. I do hope so.
