14 books10 followersসাগরময় ঘোষ (২২ জুন, ১৯১২ - ১৯ ফেব্রুয়ারি, ১৯৯৯) একজন স্বনামখ্যাত ভারতীয় বাঙালি সাহিত্যিক যিনি কলকাতা থেকে প্রকাশিত দেশ পত্রিকার সম্পাদকীয় দায়িত্ব পালন করে জীবন্ত কিংবদন্তীতে পরিণত হয়েছিলেন। ১৯৯৯ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে তাঁর মৃত্যুতে লন্ডনের দ্য গার্ডিয়ান পত্রিকায় প্রকাশিত শোকসংবাদে তাঁকে বাংলার ‘সাহিত্য ব্যাঘ্র’ হিসেবে আখ্যায়িত করা হয়েছিল। মৃত্যুর কিছু পূর্বে ১৯৯৭ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে তিনি বিংশ শতাব্দীর সবচেয়ে দীর্ঘজীবী বাংলা সাপ্তাহিক দেশ পত্রিকার সম্পাদক হিসেবে অবসর গ্রহণ করেন।

June 19, 2026I saw this trick being applied by the famous Goodreads reviewer emma, and thought that I could cheat this process. One story a day, maybe two. I can do other things, read other stuff, and I can still nail the book in a month, I think.

WEEK 1:
কালাপাহাড় - তারাশঙ্কর বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় : This was a part of my 12th standard (Pre-university / ISC) syllabus. Had forgotten the story. Lovely little narrative. Tarashankar understood his people and his milieu so well ! 4/5
সাগিনা মাহাতো - গৌরকিশোর ঘোষ: If Sagina would have compromised, he would have become Nawal Agaria in his old age, non? This story is one of the gems of Bengali literature. 5/5
মতিলাল পাদরী - কমলকুমার মজুমদার : Ohh Father Matilal... you are, you are.
This is so achingly beautiful. 5/5
ফার্স্ট ক্লাস - শংকর : Sankar's Kolkata is very different from everyone else's Kolkata. And thank God it's so. 3.5/5
সরলাক্ষ হোম - পরশুরাম : Parashuram is, all considered, the writer I read the most. Has there been a better humorist, a more fluent social critic in Bengali literature? I doubt it. সরলাক্ষ হোম might not quite be বিরিঞ্চিবাবা or শ্রীশ্রীসিদ্ধেশ্বরী লিমিটেড, but it's nevertheless impressive. 4.5/5
বড়দা - প্রেমাঙ্কুর আতর্থী : I haven't read much of Atorthee, মহাস্থবির জাতক has been on my to-read list for the longest time. There is a strange undercurrent of pathos to this apparently light story. Will read more of him. 3.5/5
বিজয়িনী - রঞ্জন : Fine. Slice-of-life, accurately replicated, of a moment in time, of a city long gone. 3/5
WEEK 2:
রানীসাহেবা - বিমল মিত্র : Bimal Mitra was one of the best to ever do it. And he does it here with aplomb. It's familiar territory for him - decrepit vestiges of early last-century feudal India, and the complexities of human nature. And like an expert charioteer, Mitra steers his story masterfully. 4.5/5
হাতুড়ি - প্র না বি (প্রমথনাথ বিশী): Sharp, satirical, observant, funny. 3.5/5
সোনার ঘোড়া - শীর্ষেন্দু মুখোপাধ্যায় : Day-before-yesterday was my son’s birthday. Our extended family here in Bangalore had gone out to Bombay Brasserie in Indiranagar for dinner. My cousin and I had stepped outside for a little bit for a chat, when a kid of the streets, about the same age as my son, came by to sell us a disco lights balloon. ‘Le lo sahab’… and in the middle of our talk about promotions and office politics, my cousin stops. He looks inside at the gathering, and then takes out a hundred bucks and hands it over to the boy in exchange for the balloon. The balloon is gifted to my son who, born to upper-middle-class folks, doesn’t understand the difference between a two-thousand-rupees Lego set and a disco-lights balloon, and is soon brandishing his balloon about … when I see my cousin look at the balloon-selling boy, take off his spectacles and rub the tears off his eyes.
I read this story, took my spectacles off and rubbed my eyes just now. Oh Shirshendu! 5/5
আপনি কী হারাইতেছেন আপনি জানেন না - শিবরাম চক্রবর্তী : I so needed this. Shibram, you magnificent little trickster, you ! Classic Shibram, classic O'Henry. Masterful. I am still grinning. 4.5/5
সুলভ মৃত্যু - জগদীশ গুপ্ত: Gentle easy-read parable, immaculately written. I hadn't read anything by Jagadish Gupta earlier, but had read a delightful chapter on him in Sagarmoy Ghosh's সম্পাদকের বৈঠকে. Glad that I have now. 4/5
WEEK 3:
Not as much was read on week 2. Some travel. A lot of work. Week 3 will be better.
আগ্নেয়গিরি - প্রবোধকুমার সান্যাল has a unique voice and a firm grasp of the milieu. (3.5/5)
প্রতিনিধি - শৈলজানন্দ মুখোপাধ্যায় is a delicate, delightful observation of maternal instincts and domestic texture. Well-written. (4/5)
বন্যা - আশালতা সিংহ : I cannot say that I am familiar with all the writers in this collection. Some I hadn't even heard of at all. Ashalata Sinha is one of them, and I did some obvious follow-up research. I am glad - such a life ! Perhaps born 80 years ahead of her time. This story itself is fine, nothing extraordinary perhaps - but I am glad to be acquainted with her writing (3/5)
WEEK 4:
জন্ম ও মৃত্যু - বিভূতিভূষণ বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় : Bibhutibhushan had the eye. The same eye that could see Indir-thakrun could see Shashi-thakrun here. Bibhutibhushan really was the best of us. 4.5/5
জাগব - বনফুল : a middling piece by one of our best short story writers. 3/5
ঝি- শরদিন্দু বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় : another one of those middling pieces by another of our greats. 3/5.
চন্দনেশ্বরের মাচানতলায় - শ্যামল গঙ্গোপাধ্যায় : Magnificent. Vivid. I am glad for the writer that he could go looking for God at the pointed-gourd fields with Amrito Das. I am glad that Amrito found God. And I am sad that we, hard and cynical, can never find that beauty. 5/5
বরের ঘরের পিসি কনের ঘরের মাসি - অন্নদাশঙ্কর রায় : Sharp social observations, flowing prose, excellent dialogues. Nothing much else. No ripples on the water surface. 3.5/5
চকাচকী - সতীনাথ ভাদুড়ী : This is another of those legends in the annals of Bengali literature - a timeless story of love, morality and compassion. I intend to read ঢোঁড়াই চরিত মানস this year. 4.5/5
বড় পাপ হে - সমরেশ মজুমদার : I have read a fair bit of Samaresh Majumdar, but cannot say that I am a big fan of his. This is a nice story though, atmospheric and pithy. Sin. God. Smokes and mirrors. 4/5
ধূমবতী - মনোজ বসু - Ah, a ghost story now! And a scenic, atmospheric, gentle one at that. I like. 4/5
Almost halfway through at meandering pace. It's okay. it's the destination, not the target.
WEEK 5:
রানীরঘাটের বৃত্তান্ত - সৈয়দ মুস্তাফা সিরাজ : Tarashankar once said, handing over his baton of chief storyteller of the red soil - "আমার পরে সিরাজ". Rather under-translated, Syed Mustafa Siraj remains a very local phenomenon. I have not read too much of his writing, but whatever I have, I have liked. This, one of his most famous short stories, doesn't disappoint. You can smell and touch the red soil of Birbhum and Murshidabad, the gently flowing Maa-Ganga, and the people that reside there in the story. Their lives, their secrets, their love and their pain. This story deserves a far wider readership. 5/5
কপালে নেইকো ঘি - আশাপূর্ণা দেবী : Ashapoorna Devi was a magician of the written word, and she weaves her spell with mastery here. Just a simple urban familial humorous narrative, but she paints the picture with such aplomb. Delightful little romp. 4/5
বিবেক - মানিক বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় : This is familiar territory for one of our greats. Crushing poverty. Impending tragedy. Moral decay. Where does this silly thing called humanity live, then? Manik Bandyopadhyay is a master. 4.5/5
শবাগার - মতি নন্দী : Nobody has shown a mirror to middle-class Bengali cowardice, fear and moral decrepitude like Moti Nandi. The banality of human failure. Or the overwhelming sense of bleak hopelessness. In journalistic, staccato, emotionless prose. This is a re-read, I had read this story perhaps twenty years earlier, but it sat just as heavy. 5/5

এই বছর অগাস্ট মাস এর মাঝামাঝি দেশ সূবর্জয়ন্তী গল্প সংকলন বইটি হাত এ পাই, বইটি আমি পুরোনো সংগ্রহ করেছিলাম। ১৯৯৩ সালের বইটি কারোর বিয়ের উপহার হিসেবে পাওয়া (গিফ্ট নোট আছে)। ছোটবেলায় বাড়িতে বা লাইব্রেরি তে দেশ পত্রিকা পড়তে ভালো লাগতো না, আসলে সেই বয়সে বুঝতে পারতাম না, তাই ভালো লাগতো না। তারপর বহু বছর দেশ পত্রিকার সাথে যোগাযোগ নেই, এখন এইসময় বইটি হাতে পাওয়ার প্রায় একমাস পর পড়তে শুরু করেছিলাম, সব থেকে বেশি ইন্টারেষ্টিং লাগছিলো বহু সনামধন্য লেখক এর লেখা আমি প্রথম বার পড়তে পারবো।
চাঁদের হাট জানেন তো, এই বই হলো চাঁদের হাট, সূচিপত্র দেখেই মন খুশি হয়ে যায়, কার নাম নেই সেখানে, প্রেমেন্দ্র মিত্র, বিমল কর, প্রমথনাথ বিশি, বিমল মিত্র, সুনীল গঙ্গোপাধ্যায়, গৌরিকিশোর ঘোষ, রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর, মতি নন্দী, রমাপদ চৌধুরী, সমরেশ বসু, পরশুরাম, প্রতিভা বসু, শিবরাম চক্রবর্তী।
পটভূমি -
অর্ধশতাব্দী ধরে বাংলা ছোট গল্পের যে জয় যাত্রা তার শ্রেষ্ঠ ফসলগুলি এখানে। পঞ্চাশ বছরের নির্বাচিত পঞ্চাশটি আধুনিক বাংলা ছোট গল্পের সবচেয়ে নির্ভরযোগ্য উজ্জ্বলতম দর্পন এই দেশ পত্রিকার সুবর্ণজয়ন্তী গল্প সংকলন। এই সংকলনের বহু গল্পের প্রতি আমার অদ্ভুত মোহ বা ভালো লাগা আছে, যে কারনে বারবার পড়েছি। প্রেমাঙ্কুর আতর্থী র 'বড়দা' , সন্তোষকুমার ঘোষ এর 'রজ্জু' , বিমল মিত্রের 'রানীসাহেবা' , গৌরকিশোর এর 'সাগিনা মাহাতো' , রমাপদ চৌধুরীর 'ভারতবর্ষ' , সুনীলের ' গরম ভাত অথবা নিছক ভূতের গল্প' একেকটা গল্প যেন এক একটা নতুন জগৎ খুলে দেয়। তাছাড়া সমরেশ বসু এর 'দোসর', তারাশঙ্কর বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় এর 'কালাপাহাড়' পড়ে বোঝা যায় পশু প্রেম, কি অদ্ভুত। অচিন্ত্যকুমার সেনগুপ্ত এর 'গার্ডসাহেব' পড়ে সত্যিই ভয় লাগে একাকি নির্জন প্রান্তরে অন্ধকারে গার্ড সাহেবের অনিশ্চয়তা দেখে। প্রতিভা বসু লিখেছেন 'দুকূলহারা' গল্পে দেশ ভাগ এর সময় দুই মহিলা ও তার নাতি নাতনি দেড় নিয়ে দেশ ছেড়ে পালানোর গল্প, যা আপনাকে সত্যিই ভাবাবে, মর্মে মর্মে উপলব্ধি করাবে তখন কার পরিস্থিতি। নরেন্দ্র নাথ মিত্র বাবুর 'অপরাহ্ন্য' গল্পে দুই মধ্য বয়স্ক বন্ধুর খোস মেজাজের আড্ডা আপনাকে জানিয়ে যাবে পরিণত বয়সে ভালোবাসার কথা। বিমল কর বাবু 'সুখ' গল্পে দেখিয়েছেন ভালোবাসার প্রকারভেদ, নব দম্পতি ও পৌড় দম্পতির জীবন যাপন এর মাধ্যমে। শংকর বাবু 'ফার্স্ট ক্লাস' গল্প টি অসাধারণ একটি সৃষ্টি, দেনাগ্রস্ত মানুষ কি কি না করতে পারে।

এই সৃষ্টি এই বই অজেয়। সাগরময় বাবু আলাদা কৃতিত্ব অবশ্যই দাবি রাখেন। ৫০০০ ছোট গল্প থেকে ৫০ টি বেছে নেওয়া সত্যিই অসাধ্য সাধন করার মতো কাজ। গল্পগুলি সাজিয়েছেন ও চমৎকার দু তিনটে সিরিয়াস গল্প পড়ার পরই সুন্দর কমিক রিলিফ দিয়েছেন, বিভূতিভূষণ বন্দোপাধ্যায় বাবুর 'ফিট অফ পেরিসেপ্টর', বনফুল বাবুর 'জাগাব', শিবরাম চক্রবর্তী বাবুর 'আপনি কি হারাইতেছেন আপনি জানেন না', পরশুরাম এর 'সরলাক্ষ্য হোম', সংকর এর 'ফার্স্ট ক্লাস', সঞ্জীব চট্টোপাধ্যায় এর 'শ্বেতপাথরের টেবিল', হাসির গল্পেরই নিদর্শন। চিত্রনাট্য এর মতো সাজানো ছোটগল্প গুলো সেই সময়কালের এর নিদর্শন, ১৯৫৩ থেকে ১৯৮৩ এই সময় এর সামাজিক, অর্থনৈতিক, দেশভাগ, মনান্তর, প্রেম, ভালোবাসা সব কিছুরই ছাপ নিয়ে রচনা করা হয়েছে। পড়তে অবশ্যই ভালো লাগবে.

এই বছর অগাস্ট মাস এর মাঝামাঝি দেশ সূবর্জয়ন্তী গল্প সংকলন বইটি হাত এ পাই, বইটি আমি পুরোনো সংগ্রহ করেছিলাম। ১৯৯৩ সালের বইটি কারোর বিয়ের উপহার হিসেবে পাওয়া (গিফ্ট নোট আছে)। ছোটবেলায় বাড়িতে বা লাইব্রেরি তে দেশ পত্রিকা পড়তে ভালো লাগতো না, আসলে সেই বয়সে বুঝতে পারতাম না, তাই ভালো লাগতো না। তারপর বহু বছর দেশ পত্রিকার সাথে যোগাযোগ নেই, এখন এইসময় বইটি হাতে পাওয়ার প্রায় একমাস পর পড়তে শুরু করেছিলাম, সব থেকে বেশি ইন্টারেষ্টিং লাগছিলো বহু সনামধন্য লেখক এর লেখা আমি প্রথম বার পড়তে পারবো।
চাঁদের হাট জানেন তো, এই বই হলো চাঁদের হাট, সূচিপত্র দেখেই মন খুশি হয়ে যায়, কার নাম নেই সেখানে, প্রেমেন্দ্র মিত্র, বিমল কর, প্রমথনাথ বিশি, বিমল মিত্র, সুনীল গঙ্গোপাধ্যায়, গৌরিকিশোর ঘোষ, রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর, মতি নন্দী, রমাপদ চৌধুরী, সমরেশ বসু, পরশুরাম, প্রতিভা বসু, শিবরাম চক্রবর্তী।
পটভূমি -
অর্ধশতাব্দী ধরে বাংলা ছোট গল্পের যে জয় যাত্রা তার শ্রেষ্ঠ ফসলগুলি এখানে। পঞ্চাশ বছরের নির্বাচিত পঞ্চাশটি আধুনিক বাংলা ছোট গল্পের সবচেয়ে নির্ভরযোগ্য উজ্জ্বলতম দর্পন এই দেশ পত্রিকার সুবর্ণজয়ন্তী গল্প সংকলন। এই সংকলনের বহু গল্পের প্রতি আমার অদ্ভুত মোহ বা ভালো লাগা আছে, যে কারনে বারবার পড়েছি। প্রেমাঙ্কুর আতর্থী র 'বড়দা' , সন্তোষকুমার ঘোষ এর 'রজ্জু' , বিমল মিত্রের 'রানীসাহেবা' , গৌরকিশোর এর 'সাগিনা মাহাতো' , রমাপদ চৌধুরীর 'ভারতবর্ষ' , সুনীলের ' গরম ভাত অথবা নিছক ভূতের গল্প' একেকটা গল্প যেন এক একটা নতুন জগৎ খুলে দেয়। তাছাড়া সমরেশ বসু এর 'দোসর', তারাশঙ্কর বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় এর 'কালাপাহাড়' পড়ে বোঝা যায় পশু প্রেম, কি অদ্ভুত। অচিন্ত্যকুমার সেনগুপ্ত এর 'গার্ডসাহেব' পড়ে সত্যিই ভয় লাগে একাকি নির্জন প্রান্তরে অন্ধকারে গার্ড সাহেবের অনিশ্চয়তা দেখে। প্রতিভা বসু লিখেছেন 'দুকূলহারা' গল্পে দেশ ভাগ এর সময় দুই মহিলা ও তার নাতি নাতনি দেড় নিয়ে দেশ ছেড়ে পালানোর গল্প, যা আপনাকে সত্যিই ভাবাবে, মর্মে মর্মে উপলব্ধি করাবে তখন কার পরিস্থিতি। নরেন্দ্র নাথ মিত্র বাবুর 'অপরাহ্ন্য' গল্পে দুই মধ্য বয়স্ক বন্ধুর খোস মেজাজের আড্ডা আপনাকে জানিয়ে যাবে পরিণত বয়সে ভালোবাসার কথা। বিমল কর বাবু 'সুখ' গল্পে দেখিয়েছেন ভালোবাসার প্রকারভেদ, নব দম্পতি ও পৌড় দম্পতির জীবন যাপন এর মাধ্যমে। শংকর বাবু 'ফার্স্ট ক্লাস' গল্প টি অসাধারণ একটি সৃষ্টি, দেনাগ্রস্ত মানুষ কি কি না করতে পারে।

ভিন্ন ভিন্ন লেখকের গল্প সঙ্কলনের ক্ষেত্রে আমার যেটা মনে হতো - গল্প বাছাই করার চেয়ে লেখক বাছাই করার দিকে বেশি লক্ষ্য রাখা হয়। এতে করে অনেক সময়ই যে গল্প গুলো সংকলনে থাকে তা হয়তো সেরকম সুবিধের নয়। দেশ পত্রিকার ৫০ বছর পূর্তি উপলক্ষ্যে এই সঙ্কলনে আমার ধারনা ছিল তাই হবে। প্রথম দিকের কয়েকটা গল্প পড়ে তাই মনে হয়েছিলো। কিন্তু পরে বুঝলাম এখানে অসাধারণ কিছু গল্প আছে। প্রথম দিকের গল্পগুলি আসলে লেখক বাছাই দোষে দুষ্ট। ৫০ টি গল্প ৫০ জনের লেখা, তাতে নামকরা লেখকদের সাথে অনেক অখ্যাত লেখক ও আছেন। বেশ কয়েজনের লেখা পড়ে মনে হল - "এতদিন কোথায় ছিলেন ?" ছোটগল্প যাদের ভাল লাগে, তারা নিশ্চিন্তে বইটি দেখতে পারেন।
