Dr. Alfred S. Titus, Jr. retired after 23 years of service from the New York City Police Department. Raised in a tough New York City neighborhood, he chose law enforcement over the streets. Starting as a Transit Police Officer he quickly progressed to plain-clothes assignments and ultimately became a Homicide Detective and Hostage/Crisis Resolution Negotiator. Dr. Titus completed his Master’s Degree from Marist College and PhD from Walden University, both in Public Policy and Administration, specializing in Criminal Justice. He is recognized as an expert in Homicide Investigations, Hostage Negotiations, Police-Community Relations/Community Policing, and is certified by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services as a General Policing Topics Instructor.
After retirement, Dr. Titus joined the faculty of John Jay College of Criminal Justice as a professor, where he combines his law enforcement experience, education, and street smarts, to mentor and teach future law enforcement professionals. Dr. Titus’ achievements have resulted in John Jay College designating him an expert in Community Policing, Policing, and Law Enforcement topics. As a result, he has provided expert commentary on law enforcement issues for CNN, Fox News, CBS News, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the Boston Globe, and other news media outlets.
Dr. Titus subsequently published two books, Forward Motion… the Keys to Progress and Success and The Personal Side of Policing, aimed at continuing to reach society and the law enforcement community, bringing the two sides together to create solutions. Dr. Titus also founded two businesses, the first a consulting firm, A. Titus Consulting, LLC., with the focus of providing the community and the police, a unique perspective that understands both sides of issues, with the intent of facilitating and rebuilding the community-police relationship. One of his workshops, Preparing for Positive Interactions with Law Enforcement, provides adults and the youth with the insight and understanding to better navigate interactions with the police. The second is a non-profit organization, Forward Motion Life Success, Inc., where the focus is to empower and motivate youth and adults through powerful speaking engagements and workshops aimed at removing limits and providing the tools to achieve success. In addition to Dr. Titus' achievements above, his third and latest book is a children's book about policing, The Police Are Part Of Our Community. The new book is a favorite with children and parents who love the vibrant illustrations and simple language that shows the diversity in communities and in policing. The book encourages parents to read with their children and discuss policing and the issues highlighted in the book. One of the goals of the book is to help change the narrative about policing by removing the fear of the police by children, which can often present itself as aggressive behavior, resisting, and disobedience, causing unnecessary conflicts.
