Christmas day is boiling hot, and the twins Franciele and Taíssa are doing their best not to melt in Gravataí, a small town in the south of Brazil. Just as the air thickens between them, Bete, their best friend and savior, brings them a watermelon, so things can start to feel better. And they do. Especially for Franciele.
This is an adorable short story about Christmas - but in the summer. It has a lot of heart, and is about family, twins, and has a cute f/f relationship. It's a pretty quick read and is definitely the type of story that will lift your spirits if you're feeling down!
I don't think I'll ever leave a negative review when it comes to something written by this author. Honestly, reading stories that deal with Brazilian culture in general (in this case, gaúcha) always make my heart warmer, I feel represented to an extent. Another really important thing about this story I want to point out is the f/f relationship. We need to read more f/f and understand the importance of lesbian/bi relationships being portraited, especially when created by a queer author because to give space to #ownvoices is another necessary step for all of us to take.
This is the perfect short story for a hot and sticky Christmas. It's a fun read with very enjoyable characters. Martins is able to successfully give the reader a sense of these characters having fully formed relationships in a short space of time. Her writing makes it easy to want to read more about them and their lives past this story. It just goes to show that not all Christmas' have to be white ones to capture the spirit of the holidays.
