God ensured she crossed my path. And that is why I chose her.

The day Louisa and James bring their newborn son home from the hospital marks a new beginning for all of them. To hold their child in their arms, makes all the stress and trauma of fertility treatment worth it. Little Cory is theirs and theirs alone. Or so they think…

After her mother’s suicide when she was a child, Louisa’s life took an even darker turn. But meeting James changed everything. She can trust him to protect her, and to never leave her. Even if deep down, she worries that she has never told him the full truth about her past, or the truth about their baby.

But someone knows all her secrets – and that person is watching and waiting, with a twisted game that will try to take everything Louisa holds dear.

Perfect for fans of Louise Jensen.

A Mother’s Sacrifice by Gemma Metcalfe is a psychological thriller that easily tipped into the disturbing side from the opening pages. As it begins readers are shown a woman on the edge of a bridge holding her baby which is enough to already bring the chills and put one on the edge of their seat.

The the real story begins with Louisa and James in the delivery room as Louisa is about to give birth to their baby. As the story is being told in the present time though the book also flashes back to Louisa’s past which also contains some very disturbing details that we come to find out over the course of the book.

Also, during the story there are flashes coming from an unknown voice that obviously has ill intent towards Louisa. So as Louisa’s current situation balances precariously it’s a struggle to connect all of the dots from the disturbing opening, the creepy unknown and the struggle with mental health in the present.

This was definitely a trip into the dark side as the pages began to turn and the story hooked me right in. There’s a lot going on in the book but I never found it hard to follow as I began to make guesses into what the outcome would be. But by the time I got to the end of the book I was sure there couldn’t be another twist that could shock me but the author tossed in probably the most disturbing detail of all so this was a definite page turner from start to finish.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

From the first day Louisa gave birth to her baby boy, she received a note at the hospital and after that, receiving those notes become more and more frequently. Their content is quoted from Bible. She had a history of depression (considering her bad childhood). She overthinking about everything and now because of those notes she thinks someone is going after her newborn. She is in distress, panicking over everything. But why someone wants her baby boy and IF there is someone, who is them!?

Ahh, I was really enjoying this story. It was slow paced but still, I find myself turning pages to find out more about characters and the story. My first disappointment was for the guessing part. You know, I really enjoy when my guess is wrong in this genre. It shows how the plot is good. In this one I guessed wrong too but the thing is if the story would go on and on for ages I wouldn’t guess right not because of the plot but because My second disappointment was the ending, I didn’t like it like at all! It was like I read the whole story for nothing! Urgh… I should have noticed the title more carefully! Told in multiple POV, 1st person. It’s slow paced, alternates between Then, Now, and After. Hope you enjoy it more than me!

Just when I thought Gemma couldn't top her first book then bang.... She writes A Mother's Sacrifice!

Wow oh wow will this book hit you hard, make a huge impact, get under your skin, it's a dark psychological thriller that packs a punch. Just when you think you might have an inkling then Gemma throws another curve ball twist!!

A Mother's Sacrifice is a breathtaking Pschological Thriller that gave me goose bumps and left me breathless.

Louisa and James finally get their pot of gold when baby Cory is born.

However things are not what they seem and someone is out to blow apart Louisa and Jame's happy family.

Louisa suffers from mental health problems and when unnerving things start to happen to Louisa things just keep on unravelling.
Due to Louisa's mental health James struggles to believe/ support Louisa as he starts to doubt her sanity.

You see Louisa isn't being entirely honest as she is burying secrets she would rather not share.
But as events start to become even more sinister who can Louisa trust and will she ever let her secrets out.

I absolutely loved that we was privalaged to the sinister voice who was terrorising Louisa. Do we know who that person is?
Hell No!! But believe me when I say that voice is bloody creepy and gave me chills!

I loved the fact I had no clue what was going to happen next. It kept me on my toes guessing.
Gemma created the perfect characters that were completely relatable and real, An eerie atmosphere surrounding the story, the perfect mix between disturbing and dark.

If you love disturbing Psychological Thrillers then you will love A Mother's Sacrifice!

ARC BOOK REVIEW
Release Date-9/3/18

A Mother’s Sacrifice by Gemma Metcalfe was such a great read that I enjoyed so much and once I started I couldn't put it down.
This is psychological mind games at there best and I was glued till the bitter finale.
So when Louisa and James bring their newborn son home from the hospital events start to occur that start Louisa's psyche unravelling in a dramatic fashion.
But with her previous history of neurosis and paranoia, she finds no one will listen and lack of believers all around.
And as events escalate further Louisa has no idea who she can turn to or either trust.
Even her own husband James doubts her very sanity and her grasp of what's real and what's not.
So there was an awful lot going on here and I really don't want to say too much as Have no desire to let the cat out of the bag and spoil this for others.
So I will try to keep this as vagueish as I can so I don't give anything away.
So. As the reader here, we are let into the truth straight from the start as Louisa's POV is intercepted with whoever means her and her family harm.
This is seriously creepy stuff as there is no identity attached to this menacing threat so along with poor Louisa we are left scratching our heads in confusion.
There are a lot of red herrings thrown in here so you do actually feel like you are going round in circles losing your sanity along the way.
we also get a small insight into what has made Louisa the way she is as we get to delve into the past with plenty of shocking revelations to come from that front.
"A Mother's Sacrifice" also came equipped with a host of diverse interesting secondary players.
Who were each a suspect all in themselves the long-suffering husband James, her friends, Annette and Magda.
I suspected each and every one of them along with poor Louisa.
And when the end game finally revealed itself here, I was still shocked and also suitably awed at this intricately woven tale and how it was all crafted together.
So the only reason for me not giving this the full five stars was that I wasn't a mega fan of the ending, In my opinion, it sucked big time.
In fact, I think Its safe to say I was a bit pissed at the time.

 photo signs-you-are-not-a-morning-person-exercise_zpsirvanjoi.gif

That's why I took away half a star.
But don't let that put you off that's just me spitting my dummy out.
This is still a fantastic psychological thriller, I have to say it's one of the best I've read in a while.
Its also set just down the road from me in Chester just loved that this was set in my neck of the woods.
So I was provided with an ARC of "A Mother's Sacrifice" By Netgalley of which I have reviewed voluntary.
All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

My mind is still spinning after finishing this book tonight... wow... that was a story and a half and I had no idea where it was going or who was behind it all.

The birth scene at the start is the book was so realistic.. I could feel Louisa's pain! Such great writing. The characters in this book were real and made me feel what they were feeling. Jumping back into Louisa's past we learn of the secrets she is keeping from her husband. Secrets that she had kept and have defined her as a person.

Thank you to HQ Digital and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book to read and enjoy in exchange for my honest opinions

A MOTHER’S SACRIFICE is a psychological drama thriller by author Gemma Metcalfe. This is the first novel I have read by this author, and it won’t be the last. It was a very emotional dark read that had my full attention.

The story opens with a woman holding a baby on the edge of a bridge…if that doesn’t get your attention!

After successful fertility treatment, Louisa and James bring their newborn son, Little Cory home from the hospital…the beginning of a new future for the family.

The story is told in the present, but there are flashbacks to Louise’s past and some disturbing facts.

Louise suffers from mental health illness.

The author releases Information on a need-to-know basis, thereby increasing the tension and intrigue. I needed to know the outcome.

This is a well-developed book, from the clever title and front cover, to the ending. Believable characters come alive as you read each small detail unfolding. This is a dark tale of intrigue and suspense. A definite page turner.

Many thanks to the author, HQ Digital via Netgalley for my digital copy.

I loved Trust Me by Gemma Metcalfe, so I couldn't grab this book fast enough. It kept me reading, but didn't quite make it to the four or five stars I see from most other reviewers. The ending just threw me way too off balance. I did find it surprising, but too unbelievable. I'm sure a lot of other readers will love how out there it is. The good: the writer is great at making you feel for the main character, even as she begins to unravel. You can feel how overwhelmed and lost she is. I had a lot of debate in my head as I read about what was going on, trying to figure out what was happening. Turns out, I couldn't! I also liked how creepy it was at times.

While Louisa may seem to have the perfect life now, once it was filled with tragedy. Now she has a loving husband and an adorable baby, but back then she was an orphan whose mother had killed herself being bounced around from home to home. People don't see her troubled past when they look at her now, but they are still wary depression will take her over again. And most don't know the secret about her new baby: James is his father in all manners but biologically. When all other attempts failed, they turned to an anonymous sperm donor.

Louisa and James are certainly enamored with new baby Cory. With hair red like hers, pale skin, and dark eyes like James has, they think he's perfect. There's someone lurking about, watching her with her baby. Spying, planning something. But who? And why?

We get glimpses into the head of this mystery person and dark details about Louisa's past as the present slowly unravels! Worth the read for me but not as enjoyable as Trust Me. I'm still looking forward to reading whatever Gemma Metcalfe puts out next.

I received a copy of this book from Net Galley and HQ Digital, thank you! My review is honest and unbiased.

Don't you love it when a book is chilling and disturbing from the get go? A Mother's Sacrifice certainly delivers on that note. And I'm pleased to say it didn't ease up either, having me on edge until the very end!

The story follows Louisa and James as they are finally about to welcome their newborn baby Cory into the world. As the story progresses, we get to read of Louisa's infertility issues, her mental illness and her disturbing past of which she has kept secret from her husband. I really enjoyed that we also get to hear from another mysterious and oh so creepy voice, who is clearly not in favour of Louisa having her happily ever after. This is a book where there is a lot going on, yet it didn't prevent me from keeping up at all. Instead, I was left curious as to how this would all play out.

I was completely engrossed and on the edge of my seat in utter anticipation, not having a clue who to trust and what was coming next...I so enjoy when than happens! And just as I thought I had things figured out as I approached the conclusion, the author sucker punched me with her most disturbing morsel of information, making this one riveting read from the very first page to the very last.

Will we be expecting a book # 2 from the author? Hopefully. I would like to read more of certain characters as I feel the story could continue due to its open ended conclusion ( of which I'm usually not a fan of).

If you are into dark, eerie and disturbing psychological thrillers that will keep you guessing throughout, why not grab yourself a copy...you'll be thrilled that you did.

Many thanks to Netgalley, HQ Digital and the talented Gemma Metcalfe for the opportunity of reading an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

This is my first book by this author but I'm pretty sure it won't be my last. This is a slick psychological thriller that weaves expertly the events of the past and their significance to the storyline of Louisa, James and little Cory with an ending that will leave you open-mouthed. It is an emotional read that tackles some big subjects including fertility issues, depression and paranoia but the subjects have been well-researched and handled sensitively. I would sum this book up as thrilling, compelling and thought-provoking. This author has a very bright future ahead of her.

How far would a mother go to protect her child? I assume a good mother would do anything in her power to keep her child safe right? Why then did the prologue open with a mother and child standing on a bridge, looking down in the vast nothingness and is she readying herself to jump with her child in her arms? I was utterly intrigued and readying myself for the reasons I might find. Willing to take such drastic measures, I could only suspect the worst and I couldn’t wait to find out about her motivations.

The story abruptly cut back to the moment when Louise is in hospital giving birth to a little boy named Cory. She and James had had many troubles conceiving and there was even a time she didn’t expect to hold her own baby in her arms anymore after unsuccessful IVF attempts. Louisa always had a child’s wish though. She longed for someone who would love her back unconditionally. Her past and background was well explained and her sad youth was written with such internal heartbreak, it made me completely understand her longing for a child. She’s not on cloud nine for long though, her happiness is overshadowed quite soon when threats are directed towards her. Someone wants her baby and she has a pretty good idea who it is, until other possibilities pop up when her friends who she met through the IVF support group start to act strangely in her eyes.

There was a select group of suspects in her vicinity which included the two other women who were in the support group she was in and I did have my own personal favorite but was never a 100% sure. I was mentally slapping myself when the identity of her stalker was revealed and applaud the author as well. She did such a great job in creating so much doubt including everyone and the next so that even I didn’t see clearly anymore and got so caught up in everyone’s dream of having a baby of their own, along with Louisa. The ending was amazing, the story really built up towards the climax. Some people might not be entirely happy with the way it ended but I think it really fit the story.

I can recommend this novel highly to anyone who loves to guess and it is definitely one of the better novels in this genre. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel from beginning to end!

This is one wild trip into the mind of madness!!!

Louisa and James have struggled to have a child. Finally, with the help of a fertility specialist they conceive and Louisa gives birth. Within hours of the blissful event, she begins to spiral into fear and terror. Someone is set to torment her and with a past history of mental illness she is a prime candidate to fall victim to their evil machinations.

Trying to explain her concerns to her husband seems to only highlight the instability she is living in. Everywhere she turns and every step she takes to either reveal what is happening or stop its continuation proves to be futile and throws her deeper into the pit of despair and helplessness.

This book pulled me in immediately. As Louisa maniacally accuses first one and then another of her closest friends as being the instigator of her present hell, I suffered along with her. The further she fell into insanity the further I fell as well.

This was well written and never felt weighted down with unnecessary information or introspection that did not move the story forward. The characters were all well developed and fulfilled their roles in a believable manner. I did struggle a bit with James as his reaction often lacked compassion and care. I longed to feel a deeper connection between him and Louisa.

While I was captivated by this story, I hated the ending. Hated it. I’m pretty sure when it comes to psychological thrillers I am in the minority regarding this issue. But, there’s no denying my jam is romance all the way. The only thing that could ever make me forgive the end is if there were another book released that picked up at the end of this one. I’d be all over that in a heartbeat. There were several questions or details that I felt had not been addressed and that were left open ended which added to my disgruntlement over the ending as well.

Overall, I loved the story just not the conclusion.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book provided by NetGalley and HQ Digital. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Multi POV – a few times it was confusing but generally easy to follow
Safe – Not really applicable as this is not a romance
Possible triggers – mental health issues; suicide; miscarriage; fertility issues

I don’t read a lot of psychological thrillers so when I do I’m always taken aback by the pace and sheer ingenuity of the narrative their authors achieve. A Mother’s Sacrifice is no exception.

‘It really does feel like a fairy tale; the beautiful nursery, the doting husband, the scrumptious little newborn who snores softly in my arms.’

That ‘Happily Ever After’ feeling doesn’t last long though. Within a couple of sentences, Louisa is experiencing anxiety and self-doubt. Living inside the poor tortured mind of Louisa is at times an uncomfortable experience but this reader’s sympathy was always with her as the traumatic events in her past are revealed. But is what Louisa is telling us the truth, fantasy, delusion or false memory? Louisa’s joy at finally becoming a mother and her unconditional love for little Cory means the reader is disposed to be on her side as her unknown tormentor preys on her fragile mental state, made more fragile by the normal strains of new motherhood.

The author is adept at dropping in little nuggets of information – are they important clues, clever distractions or just mischievous red herrings? (Answer: maybe, yes and very likely.) As events unfold the reader will suspect just about everyone, and I mean everyone – the passer-by, the postman, the Man in the Moon, the Speaking Clock… The author had me in such a spin I swear she could almost have convinced me that I was behind it all. However, alongside the breathless narrative, the book touches on some serious themes including the anguish of infertility, the emotional scars of grief and the question of who we are and where we come from.

A Mother’s Sacrifice is a white knuckle, head-spinning, mile-a-minute, dizzying rollercoaster of a read. At times, it became a little too frenetic for me and, as the twists come so thick and fast, perhaps the mechanics of the plot take priority over the characterisation. Because the reader is made to suspect almost all the characters at some point, it does mean thinking the worst of everyone. Louisa’s husband, James, comes off worst when in truth he should probably be getting as much of the reader’s understanding as Louisa. Even small kindnesses which are actually just that end up being interrogated for possible ulterior motives.

Fans of twisty, suspenseful, psychological thrillers will not be disappointed by A Mother’s Sacrifice.

How far would a mother go to protect her child? I believe a mother would do anything in her power to keep her child safe? The opening prologue has me confused as it opens with a mother holding her child getting ready to jump off a bridge. How is this protecting her child? What has happened that this mother thinks this is the only way to protect her baby? I had to find out.

This is the story of Louisa and James. Louisa gives birth to a son Cory who is in distress, but luckily survives. The rest of the story is told in various time periods, then, now and after as well as different POVs. We learn about Louisa's difficulty conceiving, unsuccessful IVF attempts and finally using a sperm donor. Louisa always had a desire for someone who would love her back unconditionally. Her past and background was well explained and her sad youth was revealed throughout the novel. She is ecstatic that she finally has a baby, but it does not last for long. She is sure that someone is trying to steal her baby. Everyone else thinks she is suffering from postpartum psychosis or the very least depression. As the story moves forward, the reader believes her and there are a variety of suspects who are trying to drive her crazy. The author did an amazing job adding the sinister voice who was terrorizing Louisa. Her POV is intercepted with whoever means her and her family harm. There is no identity attached to this menacing threat so along with poor Louisa we are left scratching our heads in confusion. I thought I knew what was going on, then I changed my mind, several times. She did such a great job in creating doubt.

Gemma Metcalfe did a great job creating empathy in the reader. I wanted Louisa to sort everything out. I was telling her what I thought she should do, but she didn't listen to me. Her husband James was so loving, but could only take so much. He wanted to help her, but she wouldn't let him. All Louisa wants is for someone to believe her. The suspense was taut throughout this story. Once I got into this story, I could not stop reading. When the ending arrived, I was shocked and surprised. Unfortunately, I was not a fan of the ending. That is the only reason I only gave this book 4 stars. As for the question asked at the beginning of the review, you will be amazed at the answer revealed in the psychological suspense story. The publisher, HQ Digital, generously provided me with a copy of this book to read. The opinions/ideas shared are my own.

A Mother’s Sacrifice has been one of my most anticipated books of 2018 after I absolutely adored Gemma Metcalfes debut novel Trust Me last year. That book had a twist that had me hitting the G&Ts hard after the shocks I didn’t see coming so I was desperate to see if she could do it again…….And she did!! But in doing so she broke my heart into a million tiny pieces.

I felt very emotional quite early on with A Mother’s Sacrifice and I hadn’t been expecting to! Louisa was a character I hadn’t been sure I would even like to begin with. She seemed very nervy and needy and I was incredibly concerned about her mental health in the days following her son’s birth! Her husband James didn’t seem particularly supportive either and I despaired of the environment that baby Cory had been born into. But gradually I came to suspect that something wasn’t quite right!! There was a whole ensemble of untrustworthy characters surrounding this new family and I found I was suspicious of ALL of them, never quite knowing who was telling the truth and also wondering whether Louisa was quite the reliable narrator that I thought she was!

There is actually quite an emotive subject at the heart of this book and that is the issue of infertility and it’s treatment. I understood perfectly the panic of these new parents that raised itself during and after the birth of their much wanted baby. I know because I myself have also experienced that feeling of expecting everything to go wrong during and after your pregnancy and always thinking at the back of your mind that you are never going to hold your own child alive and well in your arms. Gemma Metcalfe brings Louisa to life flawlessly so that we also identify with her fears and observe how she deals with the losses she has undergone throughout her childhood.

There is an unknown voice that pops up within the storyline and that chilling narrative had my skin crawling! I was never sure who this person was and why they seemed to claim ownership of Cory but OMG did I hope that this person never got their hands on that small, defenceless baby!! As the plot threads finally started to come together I thought I knew who it was but “fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice shame on me” as the saying goes!! Gemma Metcalfe had me reaching for the brown paper bag to try to control my hyperventilation as the denouement built up to it’s crescendo! Bravo!!!

But now I need MORE! That ending left me with questions I need answered and some of the characters still have so much more to give so hopefully we will see some of them (and one in particular!!) again soon. This is a fabulous twisty thriller told by a natural born storyteller and I was gripped from start to finish. Just fabulous!

You guys seriously need to read this book! If you haven’t already got it on reserve for March you need to! It’s amazing!!

I was captivated from the beginning! The prologue was so gripping that I had to message Gemma to tell her how amazing I thought it was!

Through the whole novel I was sat in suspense knowing the next chapter would be just as fabulous as the last, becoming frustrated that I had to do real life chores!

The story is full of twists! The suspicion falls at everyone’s door and the actually person whose biblical version of events turned out to be a shocker!

Gemma Metcalfe! An amazing novel that wowed me from the very first chapter! X

A mothers sacrifice by gemma Metcaffe.
It was fate that she crossed my path. And that is why I chose her.
The day Louisa and James bring their newborn son home from the hospital marks a new beginning for all of them. To hold their child in their arms, makes all the stress and trauma of fertility treatment worth it. Little Cory is theirs and theirs alone. Or so they think…
A very enjoyable read. I really felt for louise. An emotional ride. 5*.

Wow- what a story- this book literally had me on the edge of my seat the whole way through!!!!!

The story of Louisa who has battled infertility to have a healthy baby boy- and the weeks that follow the birth.

In her mind she is absolutely convinced that someone is trying to take her little boy- and nobody will believe her- and at times you actually wonder is she mad or is this really happening??

I do think this book was left too wide open- too many questions will never be answered and thats quite frustrating- so I really hope there is a 2nd book.

Due to the unanswered queries and ending I have to drop this to a 4*

After reading Gemma Metcalfe’s debut, ‘Trust Me’, I had high expectations and I wasn’t let down.

Beautifully written and full of twists that leave the reader wondering just how much was fact and how much was taking place in Louisa’s mind. Louisa is facing what could be explained with a diagnosis of Post Natal Psychosis. Having undergone fertility treatment Louisa has been left with a lot of unanswered questions about her pregnancy and, subsequently, her son. Someone is very interested in her and Cody, her son, and this leaves her scared for her and her son’s lives, she is convinced that her son will be kidnapped. Many strange things are taking place but no one believes her when she tries to explain the various things that have taken place.

As the story progresses Louisa’s past is transpiring. Not only had she lost her mother to suicide but she had other ‘issues’ that affected her emotional wellbeing with the result being that Louisa is a character that has you, the reader, starting to second guess everyone and everything that is taking place.

Gemma Metcalfe has, once again, taken what could be an exceptionally creative approach to the topic at hand and created something exceptionally beautiful.

I received this book for review purposes. Review originally posted on Rambling Lisa's Book Reviews.

Last year "Trust Me" by this author was in my top 5 reads of 2017 and now "A Mother's sacrifice" has just left me with that same feeling of finishing a whirlwind of a book and it will undoubtedly stay in this years top 5 books.
Gemma has the ability to drop you head first into a plot of twists and turns with no let up, you keep grasping at who the threat to Louisa is but it's constantly changing plot and clues leave you in the dark until the final twist... which is an absolute jaw clanger!!! It's an emotional read too, Louisa battling with infertility, anxiety and depression...Gemma writes with sensitivity on these issues and you completely feel all the pain of Louisa. Without giving away spoilers I can't say too much on the plot but the ending left me feeling so many emotions that I couldn't settle to anything until I'd taken it all in.....Gemma,congratulations on a superb book.....I am a huge, huge fan and will wait for the next book impatiently!!!

I'm sorry I know I'm a bit of a Scrooge at times when it comes to some books, I'm always on the hunt for my next fix of a thriller that's going to captivate me and suck me in, I was looking forward to trying this one after pouring over the reviews but I have to say I'm a bit disappointed I struggled to catch the plot it seemed a bit confusing, the first few pages held my attention when Louisa was in the hospital but after that first opening chapter I found it a wee bit slow, I hope I don't offend anyone who enjoyed this book it sadly wasn't for me. I'd like to thank Netgalley for my copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Thanks to Netgalley for my copy.

I am obviously in the minority here as I found this book to be a bit of a chore to finish. The ending was unbelievable and far fetched. I couldn't connect with most of the characters and although I felt sorry for Louisa I didn't like James at all. When a book takes me 4 days to finish and I am on holiday I know there is a problem.

A Mothers Sacrifice is a brilliant psychological thriller that you will not want to to put down, it had me hooked from beginning to end. Can't wait to read more by this author.

Well that was one gripping suspenseful thriller for sure. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, which was very clearly written and all of the characters were all well portrayed and believable.

The storyplot had me guessing throughout as to who the guilty party is, there were lots guessing that's for sure as I kept changing my mind as to who it was. The characters were so well played that it was hard to know who was lying and who wasn't. I literally couldn't turn the pages fast enough so as to find out how it all ends.

As for that ending, well that was certainly a shocking one, so was not expecting it at all.

*mouth agape*

Whaaa?

*coughs*

What just happened? No, seriously *shakes head* - that ending just blew my mind! *waves arms*

I have never read anything by Gemma Metcalfe before, but if you’re looking for an edge of your seat-esque thriller which plays with your mind, then your quest is over!

*screws up face*

Psst! C’mere *beckons you over*, between you and me, I think the author’s kinda twisted *nods head knowingly* We could TOTALLY be friends *smirks*

Honestly though, this is the type of read where you’ll become so absorbed in the story that you’ll jump at the least little thing. Trust me, I know this from experience *snorts* It’s a spine-tingling, hair on the back of your neck raising, read.

I’m also going to christen this author as the Queen of The Red Herring. As the story unfolds over Now, Then and After, you have to separate fact from fiction, truth from a lie. Ack, you catch my drift! I kept second-guessing myself, and in the end it didn’t make a jot of difference; I was still wrong *shrugs*

But, when all the pieces slot together, as I said above, MIND BLOWN *boom* ...

I’m officially hooked - I can’t wait to see what the author has in store for us next. In the meantime, I’m going to download her debut, Trust Me, to tide me over.

So, yeah, in case you couldn’t tell, I loved it *snorts*

After finishing Gemma Metcalfe’s second novel I am kicking myself severely. Why? Because after really liking the sound of her debut, Trust Me, last year, I bought it and never got around to reading it. What an idiot! If it’s anything like this emotionally taught, intensely gripping rollercoaster, then boy, am I in for another treat! Everything about this book was right up my street.

What should be the happiest time of Louisa’s life quickly turns into a living nightmare. Following the birth of her son, Louisa becomes convinced that someone is determined to steal him away. But with a traumatic past, Louisa seems to be on the brink of a breakdown and as her paranoia confuses the past and present, she’s loosing grip on reality. Is she really in danger? Or is the real danger all in Louisa’s increasingly fragile mental state.

Louisa is written fantastically as an unreliable narrator. Using flashbacks to her traumatic childhood, Gemma Metcalfe gets the balance of creating both empathy and doubt just right, which had me rooting for Louisa while simultaneously feeling uneasy that maybe something wasn’t quite right.

There’s some difficult topics covered in this book including suicide, abuse, infertality and mental ill health and I thought they were written sensitively. The author’s understanding and compassion of how all of these distressing and traumatic experiences affect mental health stands out in this book. I also liked how she drew attention to the preconceptions and assumptions made of people who have suffered mental health difficulties in the past, meaning Louisa is left struggling to make herself believed.

A Mother’s Sacrifice is packed with twists and turns, they come one after the other and had me suspicious of every single character in the book. Right from the start I found myself hooked and flying through the pages. What I especially loved about this author’s writing was just how down to earth it is – the language, the character’s – as a northern lass myself, I just connected with it. It’s unfussy, gritty and bold but filled with compassion and heart. I raced through this book in a breathtakingly intense few hours and couldn’t put it down. Emotional, twisty, and with a shocker of an ending I absolutely loved it! Wholly recommended to it to fans of domestic psychological thrillers – Gemma Metcalfe certainly holds her own against the top writers of this genre and is an author to watch out for in the future!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2 Stars! Nearly 5 stars!

This was a great book, hooks you in, easy to read, a variety of characters, twists, turns, you can’t quite work out who the baddie is.

I was up till 1am finishing this book, it really had me gripped. Only missed out on 5 stars because of a slight slow patch half way through which had a bit too much repetition, and because pretty much all the characters were unlikeable or annoying.

I wasn’t entirely convinced by who the baddie turned out to be, though it definitely kept me guessing.

But that ending! Really brave way to end the book....I’ve a feeling it might divide people, but I loved it.

Oh what a plot! Louisa has just had her very longed for baby with her husband James. Things haven't always been so good for Louisa. As a child her mother suffered from mental illness and since she died, when Louisa was small, Louisa has suffered too. Since then having had counselling and tablets things are on a more even keel. She now holds a secret that she thinks is safe until she receives cards on the birth of Cory, her son. Cards holding biblical quotations that only Louisa knows who the sender is. Gemma’s talent is wonderful. A gripping plot and characters with depth. You feel for Louisa and also for James trying to help and do his best to hold together a “normal” family and household. Twists and turns along the way so that you keep changing your mind as to who the perpetrator is. I didn’t guess who it was- always the mark of a well thought out plot to my mind. A book that makes you slightly uneasy as you read it and turn the pages faster as you need to know who and why to settle yourself. A recommended read.

A fantastic book that had me gripped to the very end.

This story follows Louisa and James as they become parents to baby Cory, after many failed attempts at IVF. Louisa is very protective over Cory from the start, he is her miracle baby.

There are so many twists and turns in this story, I felt like I was in a maze. When Louisa felt foggy, the author Gemma Metcalfe wrote this so well that I actually felt foggy minded too. At times I had to pinch myself to remind me that it was just a story, I felt like I had been transformed into the story.

I especially loved the funny references to well known stories, my favourite being when Louisa and James were going to have a picnic in Cory’s Peter Rabbit themed nursery but the mother in law turns up and James says “looks like Mr Tod’s just turned up and pissed all over the picnic.” This made me laugh out loud.

I really hope there will be a sequel to this because I need to know what happened.

This is the second book by Gemma Metcalfe that I’ve read and I was a bit worried when I started that it wouldn’t be as good as her first novel Trust Me. However I didn’t need to be worried as this was brilliant!

The story is about Louisa and James, who have just become parents after many attempts of IVF treatment. Louisa is very protective of their baby Cory, after all he is their little miracle. But then Louisa’s traumatised past comes back to haunt her, someone knows things about her and they are trying to take everything away from her by watching her every move.

This was brilliantly written, it is written in present and past of characters but is really easy to follow. It is full of twists all the way through and all of the characters were under suspicion from me but then came the culprit and it shocked me good and proper!

Thank you to TBC and Netgalley for my advanced copy of this fabulous book.

I was gripped from the first page. The way Gemma Metcalfe writes draws both the characters out and the reader in. I felt myself either empathising or at times being characters. Each twist made me want to carry on reading - I read the whole book in just 3 sittings . Well researched background information gave the plot credibility. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and do hope that a sequel will follow, and that it will be soon.

I am blessed to have read A Mother's Sacrifice, and now have another wonderful Author's books to add to my library/kindle. in fact I'll be down loading Trust Me in the next few minutes.
