Coco: Joy of After-Life

Rate this book
John Hennessy grew up with animals as his constant companions. Each time he faced the death of a cherished pet, along with the gut wrenching pain and guilt trips came the same questions, to which there were no obvious answers. Then, mysterious things began to happen that he could not explain, almost pushing him to question his own mind at times. This led him on an incredible journey to uncover the truth about what it is to learn, to love, to live, and to leave a legacy, for ourselves and those around us. Told in a heartwarming, revealing, personal but also uncompromising view that one could only expect from a writer of horror stories, the author steps out of his comfort zone to deliver a book that is more than a memoir of a cat who is sorely missed - it is a discovery of the self, and may challenge everything you think you know about the after-life. The author leaves it up to the reader to decide for themselves what really happened, but life and death is a personal journey for each and every one of us and accounts vary from person to person. Those who have passed over never come back to tell us what it is like, and how we should shape our remaining days accordingly. Coco: Joy of After-Life - A Journey Beyond Death and into the Heavens does not deliberately seek to provide explicit comfort and reassurance to anyone who has ever cherished and lost a pet, though readers can take some comfort from it of course. Instead, it sets out to answer some questions of anyone who has ever wondered how these creatures and ourselves fit into the larger scheme of things, both here on the Earth and beyond.

That is time I will never get back. The author likes cats but I don't think he likes editors. I don't have a clue as to how this is getting 5 star ratings although very few. Very little is written about Coco and much is repeated while things go off on tangents. I kept reading because I was hoping that he would redeem himself somehow. I should have just shelved it. BTW, I guess most of us might have a glimpse of the afterlife if we went on a trip like he did, and I don't mean one that requires a passport.

Coco is a very special cat to her owners, John and Kate Hennessey. This is her story of life and death. After her passing, the author tries to explore the afterlife. John Hennessey and Coco are forever entwined. A very special book to celebrate the life of Coco and her family, feline and human.

This one took me over a year to finish. I started it because I wanted to see how the death of a beloved pet affected the author. Having lost my cat, Cricket, a few years ago after having her in my life for 21 years, it was hard to read at first. So I put is aside and read many other books. Each time I came to Goodreads, I would see see this book on my "currently reading" section, reminding me that I still needed to deal with it. I was finally able to finish it, rather tearfully at times. I could feel how much the author cared for Coco. Even though Coco had a short life, she made an impact on the author's life. I realize how lucky I was to have had Cricket for so many years. While I cannot say I enjoyed the book the same as I would an exciting thriller or horror story, I did get something out of it. I got to see into another human's thoughts and feelings and felt a connection. There was a choice the author made later in the book that surprised me. It is not something I would want to participate in but I feel it did help the author in understanding and dealing with Coco's passing. I am not him and will certainly not be passing any judgements about it.

For those who have lost a dear pet, you might get something out of this book. For me, I feel it was worth a read. It also brought back sweet memories.
