SAGALA is a Filipiniana fantasy comic set against an alternate universe Spanish colonial era. It's a tale about a gunslinger girl who dreams of life in the Palacio Court and her Guardia Civil older brother who wants to stay far from it - but a chance encounter with a golden-haired Ambassador and his renowned escort is about to change their lives forever.
I have been curious about Sagala ever since I saw that both Ana Tejano and Mina V. Esguerra loved it. I wasn't able to attend the last Komikon so thanks to these two ladies for offering their copies! Sagala is a Filipino historical fantasy in comics format, featuring siblings Riel and Constantino. I was surprised at how the author was able to include such strong worldbuilding and character development in the short length of these issues. I really liked the artwork and found it fitting for the story. Good thing I was able to read two issues back to back because one wouldn't have been enough. I'm fully invested in these characters and can't wait to find out what happens to them next. Having said that, I have one minor quibble about the end of the second issue. To avoid spoilers, I will just say this: OMG KUYA, WHHHYYYY???
this is my favorite out of the four volumes in this graphic novel. the action is brewing, and the characters' motivations are now being presented. i also liked how there are new morally grey characters introduced. it added more complexity to the story. but i'm still not as invested as i was hoping to be.
This second installment is action-packed! It probably has the most things going on among the three issues I currently have. We got a backstory, a character dev’t inciting event, and I believe the first magical reveal from Lady Awit! I also finally get the #KuyaUmayosKa reference!
