Kai is in love and doesn’t know what to do about it because Riko thinks he is just a fickle playboy who can’t be taken seriously. His friends want to help him so Tora invites Rika’s bestfriend Ooshima out on a group date to the amusement park so in hopes that Kai and Riko can spend some quality time together. Ooshima is excited to go and Riko can’t refuse her best friend. Kagura agrees to go as well, to protect them! Shimura (school reporter) senses a hot story and invites herself along as the 4th girl.
The haunted house is the perfect opportunity to get Kai and Riko to spend time together. Tora takes responsibility over the antagonistic Kagura. Tora and Kagura are childhood ‘friends’ who families run a temple / shrine and are rivals of a sort. Kagura ‘hates’ Tora for being a womanizer, but he never seems to take offense at her hostility. Kiritani quickly follows by asking Ooshima, at first he feels he made a mistake as she is taller than he is, and she is unsure as she wanted a taller boy, but after spending a little time together he sees her cute side, and she sees his manly side. Unexpectantly a romance starts to bloom between them.
Doing his part Misaki goes in with Shimura, and she uses the opportunity to interview him, and shows that she is surprisingly observant and intuitive to the boys true motivations as she grills him not only on Kai’s potential interest in one particular girl, but also his own... she could be trouble. Of course that leaves Kai and Riko together, Kai isn’t good with horror stuff so Riko takes the lead, lol. Suwa, Riko’s crush is also at the park on a date, and it is really cute how Kai tries to protect Riko from finding out, but in the end it was for naught as she already knew Suwa’s girlfriend. Riko’s care over those she loves really impresses Kai and has him reevaluating his own feelings and motivations. I love how Kai is so reflective and really can appreciate Riko and her feelings, even when he disagrees with how she denies her own feelings.
I also really appreciate how the boys relationships are handled as well. I like that Misaki checks in with Kai and let’s him know that he is there when / if he is ready to talk. We know these two have been friends for a long time, and I like that they are real friends who talk and share their problems with each other. I also like who the boys (sans Kai) have a group chat so that they can talk about Kai and his love, they are really trying to help him and it is funny and adorable.
The volume ends with a little family time with Kai, Riko and Suwa show up expectantly and end up getting invited to dinner. Kai learns more about Suwa and his girlfriend Akemi, and we get more progression between Riko and Kai. Riko figures out it was Kai who helped her when she was sick.
