Aaron Whitman is my patient. That’s all.
The murky words in his skin don’t call to me.
His twitchy gray eyes don’t make me desire more than I should.
He’s my patient.
I’m his psychiatrist, Dr. Adeline Violet.
I’m in control.
I’m fine.
Why are you worried?
I can help him. I can cleanse his sadistic tendencies.
He’s my patient. Don’t you know?
Maximum security Ward Z at Silent River Psychiatric Hospital for Violent Criminals is our home.
He’s just my patient.

I promise.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2! Viole[n]t Obscurity, book 1 of 2. Dr. Violet is swept into a seductive, sinister game by her hot-cold patient!

“I'm going to be inside you, Violet. Over and over and over until there's nothing left of either of us. Until your skin bleeds and you're nothing with me or without me. Until you're everything.”

Books in Violent duet should be read in order:
Book 1: Viole[n]t Obscurity
Book 2: Viole[n]t Oblivion

“To say he was magnificent would have been an understatement. He was perfection. A mottled, breathing, body of aggression. Violence.”

Viole[n]t Obscurity (book 1) is a dark and twisted tale that takes place at Silent River Psychiatric Hospital. Psychiatrist Dr. Adeline Violet, Adie aka “Violet, one letter away” has been promoted and is starting her new position in the isolated Ward Z. Nothing, I repeat nothing, could have prepared her for patient, inmate and leader of Purgatory Brotherhood Aaron Whitman.

M.I.N.D.F.U.C.K.!

The mercurial, sinister, mysterious and seductive Aaron plays Adeline like a violin while they are both swept into a web of secrets, lies, obsession, conspiracy and danger. Told from Adeline’s POV, with flashbacks into both of their lives, it’s a roller-coaster ride of waiting for the other shoe to drop. I cannot wait for book 2, Viole[n]t Oblivion for the conclusion of their story.

“I want you. I want that darkness inside you. I can see it in there, festering, desperate to get out." He licked his lips. "I want to taste that obscurity more than anything.”

Things to know about VO:
1. It's different from my previous writing. This story is not New Adult and it is not considered erotic. That doesn't mean that sexual tension isn't through the MF'ing roof - it's just not dripping in sex. I went deeper, darker in some ways.
2. VO is the first in a two part duology/duet that follow these two characters.

Well... this was fucked up!

“ I'm going to be inside you, Violet. Over and over and over until there's nothing left of either of us. Until your skin bleeds and you're nothing with me or without me. Until you're everything. ”

***The following is a review of the ARC which I received for free in exchange for my honest review.***

There are only 4 patients housed in Ward Z, “where the most violent, psychotically disturbed criminals in the United States dwelled.” Each of these mentally ill characters were well developed resulting in characters that were unequivocally enthralling. The main character, Dr. Adeline Violet, is an ethical woman with solid morals until she meets the patient in room Z15: Aaron Whitman.

“Aaron Whitman would be anything but soft. There would be no whispering. No soft caress of my skin. He would bury his nails in my flesh. He would bite into my skin with his teeth, until his song was a reverberation from inside my veins. Until we were nothing more than just that – a reverberation of his reality.
Violence.”

This book was totally unpredictable and consistently enthralling! I was in awe while reading the deep, philosophical conversations between Aaron and Adeline then practically felt the smoke billow off the pages while reading the insanely hot scene in the next chapter. Not only was I entertained by the mc’s but Martin also gives us glimpse in to the other 3 patients on Ward Z, resulting in fascinating tales explaining why each was as depraved as they were.

As someone who has worked in an inpatient psychiatric hospital, I had chills while reading about the taboo, unethical activities yet I was simultaneously totally captivated and highly impressed by Martin‘s ability to create such a believable story. The only reason why I rated this book 4.5 instead of a solid 5 stars is because there were quite a few typos. Fortunately, these errors did not detract from my enjoyment of this book but after a thorough proofreading, this could easily be a flawless book!

Please let me start by saying that I totally love Ms. Martin’s writing. Ms. Martin can write anything in my opinion and it will evoke so many feelings from me! I am a huge fan!

Viole[n]t Obscurity is an unusual book in my eyes. The plot is quite original and there are twists and surprises that some of them I saw them coming and some of them not. The story is nicely written from Adeline’s POV with flashbacks from the patients from Ward Z. Really nicely written!

Adeline is a dark heroine. There is this darkness around her that made me to watch out for her all through the book. Maybe that’s why I didn’t enjoy it as much as I wanted. I couldn’t connect with her or root for her.

Aaron is a patient. I liked their conversations and they were really deep most of the times.

I don’t know about their connection…it was weird somehow and it was making sense at the same time! Very confusing indeed.

The end of the book felt like a big explosion on my face. Part of it, I saw it coming but there were still surprises! I cannot imagine how the story can go on from there…I cannot make sense of it and that’s why I need to read the next part! But I need to warn you that this book is not for everyone! This is truly a dark, twisted story!

I want to say this book blew me away and I absolutely loved it but I can’t!
I think I just expected more, I wanted more. I had a hard time connecting to the characters. I was really only intrigued by 1 and she wasn’t a main character. I mean don’t get me wrong the story held my interest but didn’t suck me in until the very end.

“My, One letter away:
"I'll consume you. You'll hate me. You'll love me. You'll want only me." He paused, his laughter dying out slowly. "And all I'll have to give you is pain. Pain like you've caused me."

And the ending alone will be the reason I may read the second book.

I will say in full disclosure I work in psych and I have worked with many violent criminals so, my brain automatically focuses on that aspect of the book. So, I may be judging a little harshly based on that.

** 2-2.5 "sadly, wasn't perfect" STARS **

I'm normally a BIG fan of Megan D. Martin's work, but this one just didn't work for me. My reasons are going to be between her and me, but I suggest giving it a try if you are a Dark Romance-Erotica reader.

P.S: According to GR, here is what the rating stars mean: "1 star – didn’t like it ; 2 stars – it was OK ; 3 stars – liked it ; 4 stars – really liked it ; 5 stars – it was amazing"

So my 2,5 stars doesn't necessarily mean that Violent Obscurity was a weak book ;)

WHAT DO YOU MEAN PART TWO COMES OUT IN JULY?

5 'ONE LETTER AWAY' STARS

I devoured this book like my life depended on it. I love the way Megan writes about fucked up people. Makes you think that you are as fucked up as her characters for enjoying their fuckedupness.

Viole[n]t Obscurity centers around Dr. Adeline Violet. She's the new psychiatrist assigned to Ward Z in The Silent River Mental Hospital. It's where they put the wildest criminals of all to serve out their life sentences and the place is pretty much hidden from the general population, its patients and even staff members. In Ward Z there are four patients beyond rehabilitation, each having interesting backstories as to how they ended up in the hospital, and let me tell you... their crimes are dark as fuck.

Aaron Whitman is one of the patients and the one Adeline feels compelled to throw away all her medical ethics for. He's a smart, seductive and a full of life lessons kind of guy, but sadly a very mentally ill person that makes sure Adeline knows why she should not romanticize him in any way.

I really felt bad for all the characters despite all of them had done atrocious things. Some I wanted to know more about their past. I liked how Adeline saw salvation in her patients even when they were far gone.

There are several twists at the end. I didn't see any of them coming. Oh man, I was gagging!

If you're looking for your next dark read, I would definitely recommend this. Anything Megan D. Martin writes about, actually.

I was given an advanced readers copy of this book and have decided to leave a voluntary review. I am rating this book 3.5 stars because at first I was enjoying it. But then the main character really made me question her sanity and dignity. I think she truly messed up. I found her completely selfish Violet. I think even though Aaron may my killed alot of people he is worse than him. He knows he'd not a good man but Violet is just fake.

Good start but failed later. I don't know but this was way too similar to Born, Darkly.
Same concept. Criminal Psychologist heroine and patient is hero. And the herione is as fucked up as the criminal hero. She is horny for the him. So Desperate that she watches him from CCTV while he is ...ugh. And he purposely does it. This one is not for me.

This book is so....gross. The description of mentally ill patients was very disturbing. The herione was very desperate. I might read the second book to know what happens further.

Viole[n]t Obscurity (Violent Book 1) by Megan D. Martin
Welcome to Ward Z – where only the most violent criminals are kept. There is no rehabilitation. There is no getting out. This is a secret mental ward holding facility that not even the public knows about. They need a new doctor, a new psychiatrist and have very little staff because absolutely no one lasts. The last doctors got their own padded rooms. Even the best of the best doesn’t last very long, so why not offer the job to the fresh-faced Dr. Violet? She’s been training for this gig all her life and she’s not going to pass over this opportunity no matter what the other employees say. She’s determined to be the one that makes it. She’ll take a different approach than the other doctors. She knows she can do some good. Even though these patients can’t be rehabilitated, she’ll at least try to help them rather than just babysit them. But you know what they say about good intentions????
That’s about all I can tell you because I don’t want to spoil a thing. But my dear readers, just know that this is not the book or romance you think it is. It has twists and turns everywhere and it’s not until the end - which will make you want to flip right to the beginning - to read it all over again - to see where you missed all the hints – that are in plain sight. Ugggggggg
Honestly as soon as I finished, I was ready for the next book but also wanted to read it again and again and again.
To put it bluntly, If you’re a comic or movie geek like I am, this could very easily be the beginning of Harley Quinn and the Joker ala Suicide Squad; even down to the heroine with blonde hair and the hero with tats everywhere and how a doctor could possible fall for a patient.
That’s it, not saying anymore except READ.THIS.BOOK!!!!

This is like American Horror Story in ebook format. It's been a long time since I was engrossed in a book and let me say, it's so twisted that I had to make sure my husband couldn't read the text over my shoulder. He's not an AHS fan. I am. To those of you fellow twisted closet pervs, you'll love this. It'll make you sick and yet you will devour it; it's like being unable to look away from AHS Freak Show no matter how twisted and sick they behaved.

It makes you think too. Are you really as saintly as you like people to think? If you had an opportunity to do harm to someone, to exact a bit of revenge, and get away with it, how do you really know you wouldn't do it?

What I especially liked about this story, however, is that it shocked me. I'm so sick and tired of predictable books. That's one of the reasons I'm only reviewing about a book a year lately. I've read the same stinking story 100 times. You change the names, the location, the years, maybe add different technology, and yet you deliver me the same cheesy romance as 500 authors before you. So yea, I like the shock factor of this.

What I didn't like? (And yea, I contradict myself here, because I did say I wanted to be shocked and the ending is a shocker.) The ending. The author took TSTL literally. I couldn't believe the doctor did what she did. I'd have preferred it a bit different.

On another note, how to get this into the hands of AHS writers??? Seriously.

“Patient or doctor, anyone down here is a special sort of monster that can't found anywhere else”

“I wanted to consume him and his sinister thoughts until I was all he could think about - under his skin, in his veins, in his soul. Everywhere.”

I received this book from the author for an honest review.

WTF did I just read. It’s a crazy ass story and I FLOVED it …like HARD and I am flipping out that I have to wait until SUMMER to read the second part of the duet!! Holy Shit Balls Batman!! This book was hella crazy as allllll of Megan’s dark books are. They are so complex and twisted and just WHUT!!!!!!!!

Dr. Violet is the new psych doctor on Ward Z. This is pretty much where all the Charles Masons are going. These people are not getting out…EVAH!!! But she is young and hopeful that she can make a difference. She has limited staff, but she knows she can get this stuff done. She befriends one staff member, Richard who tries to help her stay away from the darkness that is inside of her and starts to shine when she spends more and more time with Aaron.

Aaron is hella crazy but at the same time I LOVE HIM. He loves hard and is so loyal to the people he trusts. The conversations between Aaron and Violet start to consume each of them. Their professional relationship starts to dance and then definitely crosses over inappropriate very quickly. But I was falling more and more in love with Aaron and wondering more and more for Violets sanity. I guess when you love someone who is nuts you tend to become nuts yourself???

The last couple of chapters shit goes down in a huge way. Secrets are spilled, and holy hell does Aaron come back to the crazy side of life even crazier after the way Violet misuses his trust. People I am dying to know what is going to happen to them….DYING!! Plus I wanna see the body count total because these two are going to definitely leave a lot of bodies in their wake.

4 intense and bewitching stars...

‘Viole(n)t Obscurity’ is a book about identifying and accepting your inner dark side. Its dark setting and intense dialogue will draw you in from the very start.

Adeline Violet is a psychiatrist at the Silent River Psychiatric Hospital, an all-male maximum security psychiatric facility that houses mentally ill and violent criminals who are unwanted by the state. Adeline enjoys helping people and unraveling the psyche of individuals, which is the reason why she chose to become a psychiatrist. Adeline’s career reached new heights when she got promoted to work in Ward Z, but what she didn’t expect was that this new position would put her career in jeopardy.

The object of this new predicament was one of Adeline’s patiens, Aaron Whitman. Aaron has gray twitchy eyes that draw you in like a moth to a flame. He’s also perceptive, intelligent, dangerous, violent and unfathomable. One of the things that I enjoyed most about this character is the manner in which he speaks; it takes you very deep into the human psyche.

The writing in this book was superb. I absolutely enjoyed the way the author played with words, which caused you to delve deeper into your psyche to understand its underlying meaning. This also added to the overal intense and ensnaring feel of this spellbinding read.

In short, this book was a complete mindf***; the twisted plot, the dark psyche ward setting and the intense characters. The plot twist towards the ending of the book was also mind blowing and EPIC. In a lot of ways it reminded me of one of my favorite movies Flight Club.

If you’re looking for a dark read with a twisted and intense plot then grab yourself a copy of ‘Viole(n)t Obscurity’, a book whose hero will cause you to dive deeper into your psyche.

Dr. Adeline Violet works at a government run psychiatric facility. That right there should tell you that there will be some shady sh¡t going on. She is given a promotion to be the lead psychiatrist of Ward Z, the worst of the worst because no one else wants the job. People so dangerous, the government wants them locked away, to disappear forever, and they will be her new patients.

There are only 4 patients in the ward, and Violet is instantly intrigued by Aaron, a known terrorist and leader of a crime ring. His incarceration in Ward Z makes sense to me, as does that of 2 of the other residents. I did struggle with why the government put their last patient in this ward, being she is only a child. Dr. Violet's job is really to be a babysitter, rather than try to rehabilitate them, but she takes her job seriously.

As she becomes further infatuated with Aaron, you start to see some instability in her own mind. She is extremely jealous of a woman Aaron was in love with prior to his arrest and incarceration. She does something unethical to Aaron to get the answers she wants. But he is a psychopath, so I don't think she is going to get off easy with him. There is a twist at the end I did not see coming and shows you how she has her own demons. Maybe she should be a patient their too. That's up to the reader to decide.

There is supposed to be a follow-up to this book, but at this time, it is not out yet. I am interested to see where Aaron and Adeline's story goes.

This book was truly terrible, and that's pretty shocking to me, considering I've read a couple Megan D. Martin novels before and enjoyed them. The author took an interesting, taboo premise and used it to create an overdramatic story completely lacking in substance.

But I'll probably read the next book when it comes out, not gonna lie.

I'm a bit curious where the storyline is going to go. Things got really crazy in the last chapter.

TW: Gets a bit violent near the end of the novel, but other than that, I can barely categorize this book as a dark romance.

Well this was definitely not what I expected from Martin. Being a huge fan of her Filthy Series, she surprised me with this psychological read. It was written very well, kept you questioning until the end. You were invested in the darkness of the strongly written characters, and the telling of their backgrounds. Martin is a amazing storyteller with this gem. Can't wait for its conclusion. Happy Reading!!!

I love this novel! It is incredibly unique and explores a powerful depth within the main characters inner consciousness. It's twisted, unpredictable and romantic in a dark way as well! I've never read a novel like this before, Great job miss Martin! Most importantly, it reminds me of the love story between Joker and Harley Quinn~!Can't wait to read the second book! Very intriguing and disturbing psycho analysis and a very disturbing protagonist. Actually, both of them are very disturbing, but that's the beauty of this book. I was hooked from beginning to end. Towards the end, the quality of the story kind of lessend compared to the beginning, but I still very much enjoyed this and I am really curious to see how this series continues.
