Very good trilogy, so far. I just got a little bummed when realizing toward the end of volume 3 that the full story would not be resolved then. There were a few plot choices that I found a bit lacking in the 3rd volume and hopefully they will be resolved in volume 4. Will definitely read the next one when available though, it's a good story :-)
I would classify this book as a good YA novel. The author, in her first book, doesn't have what I would describe as a the strongest writing prose, but her characters, setting and storyline are interesting and clearly I enjoyed it as I continued to read the next 2 books in the series. It's a bit like the force from StarWars meets all the tributes from the Hunger Games - but instead of them dying, they get rescued and grow up to build their own little country.
If you are looking for something new and a little different with a positive message of family and peace, give this series a try.
I love the setting of the story. The beautiful, fruitful Maween lands and the arid desert are perfectly symbolic of the concepts of Life and Destruction. The metaphors are clear and unblemished...simple but not childish. The characters and their struggles toward oneness with the Creator are timeless and real even though presented as fantasy. I can't wait to get the next book!
Really enjoyed the series. Well developed characters. Very beautiful descriptions of the countryside and the garments worn by the characters. One point that a person could draw from the story is that it is possible for all of us to develop a stronger connection to the life force surrounding us.
This series has quickly become one of my absolute favorites, ever. Rachel Devenish Ford's writing is a treasure for this world. If you love fantasy or a complex good vs evil story, this is it. The characters are so well developed that I easily fall in love with them in all of their complexities. I see myself and my longing for God in this book and it opens my eyes to the world anew over and over.
