But what Ledger finds inside the palace is a fresh start, a chance to be a whole person again. He has a job, friends, and after an unexpected encounter with a king, he might have a lover, too. Is keeping his true identity a secret really so bad?

Pharaoh Setka Nebamun kier Bane has lost so many people in his life, he's determined to keep those he has close. Unexpectedly, that list now includes a new scribe whose compassion and gentle caring Setka needs. He finds himself relying on Ledger to help him through some of the most trying times of his life--and Ledger seems willing to be there for him.

But secrets never stay hidden for long. When the bill for Ledger's new life comes due, lives are at risk, and it's possible everyone will have to pay.

I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first one in this series. I think the scope of the universe, here, has gotten too big. Too many characters, too much plot, so there wasn't enough space dedicated to the MCs and their romance.

False memories and true love

Kicking right off from the last story, we transition over to Ledger Atwater to see his story since the fateful wormhole incident. Ledger has spent his time being bought and sold for slave labour and finds himself captured by a drug lord on his latest planet given a 'choice' to work for them. But the job isn't horrible for once; Ledger is to live and work on a planet as a scribe with a real job, identification, and money. The real reason for his placement is to be a spy, but in the meantime it gives Ledger a life, something he hasn't had in a long time. As Ledger gets to know the city he lives in, the man who runs it, and sees the happiness in the people, he settles in and imagines a life for himself, but that can't happen as long as he remains a spy.

This story made it very easy to forget about the problem while Ledger built up a life. There are other concerns going on to get swept up in that brings Ledger together with the Pharoah Setka and makes the place home. At the same time, Noah, Vivek, and Bendel are also a part of the story. Ledger is on Bendel's home world and all three men are heading there. When you do remember about the fact that Ledger is a displaced human and a spy, he is so enmeshed in his life that it feels impossible to see a clear way out. It was a very well done story and the climax of events as everything culminates was truly impressive.

An excellent book with so much heart, I can't wait to read the last one!

Great follow up to the first book. I was glad to see Noah and Virek from book 1 again too. Sitka and Ledger were both great characters and I enjoyed that their conflict was mostly external. I deducted a bit because of some inconsistencies from the first book that were never really explained. Highly recommended

From slave to Consort.

Ledger had been made a slave but he was alive. Sitka was pharaoh the anger and despair over the death of his brother links the two together.
A great book that has living, breathing characters and exciting storylines.

Pretty good. Had a good chunk about Noah and co still, but the main focus was on Ledger. It did have two events near the end that kind of ruined it for me by being almost fantastical and really unnecessary. But the rest I liked.

Own in the 3 book collection. I really liked this one--almost better than the first. There is a very Ancient Egypt feeling about this one which appeals to me.

Good, but I didn't like it as much as the first one. Setka really didn't make a great early impression and that really kind of cast a shadow on the rest of his actions.
