Truth or consequence. For Phoebe McCabe, it's not a choice, but a reckoning.
For gallery owner Phoebe McCabe, life would be perfect if crime didn’t run in her family—literally. Both her brother and her love interest are Robin Hood thieves hunted by Interpol for stealing from the black market and giving to museums, an idea almost noble enough for Phoebe to live with. Only she can't. Once she begins questioning how much of the stolen treasures actually reach their intended destinations, Phoebe is caught in a vortex of danger and deceit.
She races to Italy to investigate accompanied by her favorite friend-who-can’t-be-trusted, Sir Rupert Fox, and, Max, her godfather. Clues plunge them into the jungles of Jamaica, entangle them in secrets and lies, and finally force Phoebe to face what she's been avoiding all along. Saving her own neck is only part of the problem.
Phoebe McCabe hasn't heard from Noel, her boyfriend, and her brother for a few months and she's getting worried. The pair are art thieves who steal art and return it to the rightful owners, though Interpol and other assorted gangs don't agree with their methods. So Phoebe and Max, her godfather, decide to find Noel and Tobias with the help of Sir Rupert Fox, Phoebe's knitting companion, and others. This is such a great series. This book was on my reader this morning and I've just kept reading, anxious to see what happens next. It's an action-packed ride, and now that I've finished, I feel I can finally let my breath out. The story goes from London to Rome to Jamaica. Poor Phoebe has been battered in some of the previous books, and while she takes a share of bumps and bruises here, she's a much stronger woman in a lot of ways. It hasn't been easy for her to have her brother and boyfriend as criminals. She's gone through some hoops to justify their 'Robin Hood' crimes, and it all comes to a head here. As always, the supplementary characters add a lot to the story. Peaches is a great new addition, and I love the glimpses of Serafina's various abilities. Foxy and his knitting are always welcome. As a knitter myself, I love how Ms. Thornley makes it such an integral part of the story for Phoebe and Foxy. I feared for Phoebe's well-worn knitting bag which is such a part of her character. I can't wait to see what happens next for Phoebe, Noel, and the rest of the gang. Fingers crossed, but I expect Phoebe will somehow get in more trouble.
I just finished binge reading this series. I lost a lot of sleep...because of the "just one more chapter" syndrome that would take me to 5 o'clock in the morning!!! The characters were believable, complex and relatable. The story lines keep you glued to the book and give the best action movie ever made a run for it's money! I can't wait for more!
Jane Thornley just keeps getting better and better. She totally had me hooked from the start, and kept me up reading until it was done and I knew what happened. Phoebe has come into her own, and makes some life changing choices. She’s as gutsy as ever. I can’t wait until book 6!
I felt a bit sad about Toby, he was really horrible to his sister and although this is true to life as I know only too well it was hard to read. I was glad that noel and phoebe resolved their love and now she will be able to move on
How can you go wrong with history, art, knitting, and edge of your seat adventure. Great charters. Interesting plots and exotic places. All the books are page turners. Can’t wait for the next adventure!
Last of the Crime by Design series and one of the least scary but more poignant. You will appreciate Phoebe’s growth as an empowered woman but not the man in her life. Maybe with the new series we’ll see her branch out romantically!
So now we found out how the agency began. Another thrilling read, and sad. How those we care about hurt us, is always sad. This group of friends will survive and continue in forthcoming adventures. Hopefully, Phoebe will find real love too.
Not as good as the others in the series and I felt it was all a little rushed. Still, a good read and I’m still intrigued about where it’s going to go next.
Another excellent read by this author. The characters have developed over the 5 books and are well rounded and believable. I look forward to reading more titles from this author.
