Highland Laird Symon Grant lost his first wife in childbirth. To keep his bloodline alive he needs to marry again, but he wants a woman with spirit. Little did he know the dancing beauty he saw and craved was a feisty Englishwoman fleeing the wrath of the man whose home she destroyed after he destroyed her dreams.

Is Athena Trappe the perfect woman to bear Symon’s children? BETWEEN A HIGHLANDER AND A HARD PLACE by Mary Wine is a wonderful, easy to read historical romance featuring a strong-willed woman who will settle for nothing less than exactly who or what she wants and an brawny Scottish Laird with the heart of an alpha and eyes only for Athena.

You have to love when the heart knows what the heart wants, damn the consequences. A quick read with some heat, a whole lot of trouble and men in kilts!

Series: Highland Weddings #5
Publication Date: 10/30/18

This book was filled with excitement and suspense. I really loved our hero, Laird Symon Grant. He was so sweet and so honorable – not to mention handsome and strong. As for the heroine, Athena, I just never warmed up to her. I did like her better toward the end, but for most of the book, I just wanted to knock her on her noggin and ask her what was wrong with her. I also have to wonder when, where and how doing absolutely stupid things became equated with being ‘spirited’. I believe spirited should be more equated with intelligence. This heroine kept running away and landing in big, hurtful, dangerous trouble. Our hero kept rescuing her from the messes she got herself into, but she still was determined to run away – and – of all things – head back to England where a really bad fate awaited her. So, in my opinion, this heroine was one of those TSTL heroines.

Symon is a widower whose wife died in childbirth several years earlier. It was an arranged marriage, but he had come to have affection for his wife. He and his cousin Brenda are the last of the line, so one of them needs to marry and produce an heir. Symon knows he needs to marry again, but he just can’t work up any enthusiasm to accept any of the offers he has on his desk. Then, he and his men stop into a spring festival and he catches sight of a gorgeous wood nymph. She ran away and he had to find her again -- and he did – and she ran away again – then, she was abducted and he rescued her, and again and again and again.

Athena was in love with Galwell. He was rich, handsome and doting and they were going to marry. Then, he abducts her while she’s on her way home from church services and informs her that they will not marry and that she will become his mistress instead. He manhandles her a bit, but she manages to escape by setting his townhouse on fire. She gets back to her Uncle Henry and he arranges for her to travel to Scotland dressed as a male. He had to get her away because Galwell’s family is very rich and powerful and has the ear of the Queen – plus – now Galwell could also bring charges against her for setting fire to his townhouse. In Scotland, at a spring festival, she could hardly stand being all alone and dressed as a male, so she decides it can’t hurt anything to shed her boy's clothing and partake of some of the traditional activities. She sees the most handsome man with beautiful topaz eyes watching her and she is immediately drawn to him. Then, one of the men she’s traveling with discovers she’s a female and decides he’ll sell her to a brothel. Luckily for her, Symon rescues her.

Symon and Athena have to travel a long bumpy road before they finally reach their HEA. Mostly because Athena keeps getting herself into trouble, but also because of someone at court who has great influence over the young King. That someone wants something Athena has – and she doesn’t even know she has it.

I loved Brenda, Symon’s cousin. Their relationship was great. There is also a good set-up for the next book (I assume) featuring Brenda and Laird Gunn. I like Brenda’s wisdom, strength, and courage and I just really hope that she isn’t made into just another TSTL heroine in her book.

Between A Highlander and a Hard Place is the next book in the Highland Weddings series. Each book has added some depth of courtly intrigue and we definitely get some delightful and mysteries that come into play into this book. We have an edge of your seat, laugh your booty off fun that will keep you flipping those pages as fast as you can get them read. This might just be my favorite book of the series, it was SUPER DUPER FABULOUS!! Mary Wine has done wonders with this book and it had that old classic Highlander feel that I have missed lately but Mary Wine has revitalized this type of Highlander we see that occurs in this book.

In Between A Highlander and a Hard Place it begins with our heroine who is English. She is living in London, with her uncle. She has been courted by a lord with high hopes of marriage soon and thinking that his affections were genuine. However, her fiancee is not who she believes him to be. He has no plans to marry her, he makes a plan to make sure she is ruined in society's eyes, and will have no choice but to be his mistress or her uncle with be left destitute. But Athena, has no plans to be a mistress for anyone...she wants and knows that she deserves better. So she runs away and her uncle hides her with a good friend of his, who is traveling north to Scotland where she will pose as a boy.

Laird Symon Grant is a widower after his wife dies struggling to give birth. And now he is alone and knows that he will need to marry again, but this time he is determined for it to be his own choice. What Symon didn't plan on is sighting a beautiful lass at a may day dance and a woman who will turn his world upside down. Athena while traveling sees the festivity of the may day dance and she wants to participate and feel like a woman again. So she lets her hair down, and buys a dress and starts participating in some frivolity. Only she never expected to run into Laird Symon who kisses her breathless and she knows the chemistry between them is fiery hot. But she has no place with her life in shambles to even think about entertaining the idea of being with Symon. But Symon has his own plans for Athena and he refuses to let her get away from him ....even if it means a bit of kidnapping to make sure she is safe.
I crave you, Symon. God knows I should not.

What a delightful jewel Between a Highlander and a Hard Place turned out to be. I wish I could give this book the type of review this book deserves. Now I do want to say that this book won't be for everyone, and you just can't take certain things seriously. Like Symon putting Athena over his shoulder at times...I found it hilarious because of the way its written but I know some might take it too seriously. The bantering between these two is such fun times and boy can this boy KISS!! You will just want to swoon alongside the heroine because these two put together some fireworks that are EXPLOSIVE!!
I'm no' interested in fucking ye for the release it grants me. I want more, and I'll no' have ye unless ye swear ye are me wife because ye consider yerself bound to me as surely as I know I am bound to the very bottom of me soul to ye.

I love the way that Mary Wine developed the romance here. Its written in such a way that endears you immediately. Athena has been burned very badly, obviously. So she is wary of Symon, but she soon realizes that he is nothing like her ex fiancee. He does have honor and wants to see her safe even if he wants the time to court her and convince her to marry him. She is endeared to the clan pretty quickly, and many can see the chemistry between the two even if they are a bit resistant to others. But they see the way that Symon and Athena defend and protect each other in the small ways that make the big difference.

Now we have another aspect to the story that I really enjoyed....the bigger plot of the book that is outside of the romance. Now the primary focus of the book is the romance, but we also see some other elements that really make this story sparkle and shine. We have some side plot lines that come together. We have the ex fiancee, who is furious that Athena has some lands she didn't know about since she has Stewart blood in her. We have the leery and horrible man who tried to sell Athena into prostitution who was traveling with her and he wants money and is trying to entrap her. We have some plots among the court of King James who is merely a teenager and a Frenchman who tries to manipulate him.

Then we have something happen in the end with Symon's cousin who I have a feeling is going to be the heroine for the next book. Now she and another clan chief have some sizzles between them but its going to be a forbidden romance and I really want this book NOW because the plot in Between a Highlander and a Hard Place doesn't get fully resolved and I need to know what happens with all the other key players apart from our main couple. Gosh darn it Mary Wine....you are pushing my limits of patience hehe (love you though).

Overall I found Between A Highlander and a Hard Place to be a love story of adventure, laughs, steamy kisses and sensual overtones that keep your toes curls and a plot that keeps you on the edge....watch out for a story that will stun and delight you in the small and momentous ways!!

Between a Highlander and a Hard Place is book 5 in the Highland Weddings series. This is the story of Symon Grant and Athena Trappes. I have read the other books in this series but feel you can make this a standalone book if you wish to do so.
Athena thought herself in love and on the edge of getting married but then that man turned mean and said he was going to make her his mistress. Athena ran away from him which lead her to Symon. Symon was a widower who needs to marry for his clan and to build his family. Symon is attracted to Athena from the start. Things don't go easy in their romance but it kept me turning the pages.
Love Ms. Wine's writing and was excited to read their story!

Symon Grant needs to marry, he and his cousin Brenda are the last of their line and both childless and widowed. Symon cared for his wife and has mourned her for four long years, but the time to move on has come - he owes his clan an heir.

Athena Trappes is the on the brink of marrying Galwell, the son of Baron Scrope. He has asked for her hand and promises to see to the contracts soon. But when Galwell betrays her, Athena has to flee or see her family destroyed. Her uncle has her dress as a boy and travel with a friend of his to Scotland, he promises to gain support against Galwell so that she might return home.

Athena travels for weeks with Myles and when they stop in a village, she abandons her disguise and joins the May Day revels. She catches the eye of Symon, she is the first woman in years to elicit a response from him and there is no way he is going to let her get away. They share a kiss and she disappears. He looks for her and is more determined than ever to find her. Athena sees him looking for her, but knows nothing can come of it, no matter how attractive he is, or tall, or handsome - no, nothing can come of it. But what she doesn't know is her impromptu dance didn't just catch Symon's attention - it also revealed her true identity to a very unscrupulous man, Will Tinker, who is traveling with Myles. Will takes one look at Athena's beauty and decides that she will make him rich.

He abducts her and plans to sell her to a brothel - but she outsmarts him and escapes - right into Symon's waiting arms. Symon learned that Will had nefarious plans for Athena and is going to save her - he isn't sure if she is the woman he wants to marry, but he knows he can't leave her to the fate Will has in store for her.

When he finds her outside the brothel, he insists that she go with him - he says it is not safe for her to be alone and promises to notify her uncle. She goes, but has no plans on staying. When they arrive, the clan thinks she is his bride - they both deny it and there are quite a few amusing scenes based on the assumption he will marry Athena.

For their part, they can't keep their hands off each other and Brenda appoints herself the guardian of Athena's virtue. They grow closer and Athena decides that she will marry Symon, but before she can let him know, Will Tinker turns up again, with a new plan!

Athena is saved yet again by Symon, but the rescue is not without casualties and their celebration is cut short by the king's men. They are forced to attend King James and he throws a wrench into their happiness by revealing the truth of Athena's parentage and threatens to tear them apart.

Another abduction, escape and rescue are thrown into the mix as well as the arrival of Brenda's annoyingly persistent suitor Bothan Gunn and a decision by the king that sends everyone reeling.

This was a fun story, a bit wordy and repetitive at times, but overall a well written, fast paced, steamy, exciting story with great leads, secondary characters and multiple villains. Ms. Wine does a great job of setting up the next story without detracting from Symon and Athena's hard earned HEA. This is the 5th book in the Highland Weddings series, but it can definitely be read as a stand alone title.

I felt really sorry for Athena, the heroine of this story. Fleeing London disguised as a boy because her other options were unpalatable at best (become a wealthy man’s mistress or go to jail for setting fire to his house when he attacked her) she keeps ending up in dreadful situations caused by most of the men around her behaving like complete asshats. It’s no wonder she’s had an absolute gutful of being pushed around and told what to do when she runs across Symon, Laird Grant, who saw her dancing with abandon at a maypole and followed her for a week, arriving just in time to help her escape being sold into a brothel.

Symon’s a decent man, but he’s a clan laird and accustomed to being obeyed. Even though she’s drawn to him, Athena really doesn’t want to be. She owes him her gratitude, but she’ll give him nothing more, and he’s not the kind of man to take it.

Symon and Athena played off each other really well, and there was a build up for a second intriguing romance between Symon’s cousin Brenda and another clan chief. The court intrigues of both Elizabeth Tudor and King James VI of Scotland (as a teenager) were touched on, sixteenth century politics catching up the protagonists in a deadly game of cat and mouse.

There was obviously a great deal of research put into making this book historically accurate, with enough detail to make it feel as though the reader is really in the sixteenth century, though the author delicately glosses over some of the less savory details of everyday life in that time period. Dysentery and smallpox really aren’t sexy, after all!

I really enjoyed the read and I’d definitely read Brenda’s story, along with any other Highlander books this author writes. I’m giving this five stars.

Between a Highlander and a Hard Place is a historical romance but it also has historical figures that are a part of the main plot. I did find this rather interesting but at the same time I actually felt that it took away from the story. The romance, which was the main focus, had less time to develop in order to give space for the historical characters and the parts that they play but without there being any true development of the historical characters. I also felt that the story itself was a little meandering at times because something would be introduced and I had to review what I had already read to see if what was being introduced was relevant.

This was an enjoyable read, but some of the writing just fell flat for me and a lot of the phrasing became quite repetitive and a bit too saturated in religious fervor. The plot, however, was fairly engrossing and full of intrigue. The love scenes for me were a bit stilted and there is definitely instalove/lust here. That said, I would recommend this one, but I doubt I'll reread it myself.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Mary Wine just has the ability to effortlessly transport you to the Highlands with a few sentences. While this story begins in England where our heroine, Athena Trappes, daughter born of scandal is being duped into being mistress to a jerk of a lord. In order to save her reputation and save her family from shame she goes on the run to Scotland.  Unfortunately, actually fortunatly, she arrives there under disguise for May day celebrations. While taking a bit of a break she participates in the festivities and catches the eye of a widow laird, Symon GrantSymon is a good laird to his people and realizes it's time to take a new wife and produce an heir. After all, it is unstable times in the Highlands. Having a son as an heir will provide protection to all.

What comes after is good fun involving Highlanders keeping what they steal. The bantering between Athena and Laird Symon is pretty hilarious, as well as the residents of the castle doing their best to make sure Athena is secured as the lady of the clan. After all she is a perfect counter part to their noble Laird.

While there are some amazing characters to love, there are definitely great villains that you can love to hate. I can not wait until Wicked Highland Ways, as it is time for Symon's cousin Brenda to get her HEA, whether she wants it or not.

3 Frustrating Stars

Between a Highlander and a Hard Place is the 5th installment of the Highland Weddings and can easily be read as a standalone without any confusion had by a new reader.

I'm mixed on the rating and how I feel about the novel overall. The entertainment value. The overall emotion I felt while reading was frustration. The mystery suspense angle overshadowed any and all romance, then all the sudden politics of the era came out of nowhere, with zero buildup, and stole the show. I feel as this novel didn't have a firm hold on its identity, to the point it detracted from the entertainment value. Chaotic. Paced oddly.

Athena is on the run when the man who was to be her husband decides to make her his mistress instead, thinking he didn't need permission from her guardian or her consent. Escaping England, Athena dresses as a male, catching the notice of a Laird in Scotland.

Symon was a solid historical romance hero- the perfect highlander. He was gruff and rough yet tenderhearted when it came to Athena. This lent well to the insta-lust, slow-burn, bantering between the pair. The early part of the novel was truly romance.

Symon is the last of his line, outside of his cousin, Brenda. Both widowed, both must marry to ensure the stability of their lands and their bloodline. Neither is too keen on the prospect, but Symon is instantly taken with the English beauty, and woos Athena to be his wife.

Thankfully, Athena isn't contrary. She's not too stupid to live. She's not a damsel in distress. However, the story is contrary, irrational, convoluted, chaotic, and frustrating, burying the romance entirely by forcing the characters to deal with outlandish events.

After waiting through countless interrupted lust scenes, where I am the biggest slow-burn fan. When it came to the payoff, which I'd been highly anticipating, I was disappointed beyond belief. The between-the-sheets action was ill-timed, time and time again. Brenda had just been kidnapped, one of their people killed, yet the author decided that was the time to finally reward the reader?!?

As a reader, am I to be invested in Brenda as a character, for their perilous situation, or am I to get hot and bothered by a love scene? Tell me, because it felt like an unwanted, interrupting sex-sells commercial shown as an intermission during my favorite TV show, where I want to know what happens next, where I'd undoubtedly fast-forward to get past the sexy commercials. I was looking forward to the romance and their connection in bed, but I was too worried about Brenda, or the other situations they were in, to find enjoyment in the scenes. What should have been a reward became ill-timed, frustrating, and annoying, to where I 'fast-forwarded' the last two to find out what happened next.

This happened not once, but three times. All smexy scenes took place during times of great peril. Written as an unwanted intermission, as if I enjoyed it, I obviously am heartless for not caring that a character has been kidnapped to be sold into sexual slavery (a threat used repeatedly, until I was desensitized) Whiplash. To go from someone being kidnapped, which is heart-racing suspense, where you don't know what happens next, to the scene you've been waiting forever to read, only to have it be lessened because clearly I care more about their longevity and Brenda than they do.

This rubbed me wrong, approximately at the 75% mark, and went downhill from there. The first third of the book had one identity (romance), the second third had the identity of mystery suspense, and the last third was filled with political maneuverings and the characters being held hostage without autonomy. This meant any connection I felt for the characters in the first third was gone by the time politics came into it. I would be fine with any three of these things, if they were consistent from start to finish, not fighting against one another and overshadowing each other.

Was I entertained? At first. Frustration won out, but I wanted to know what happened next. How many times does Athena get kidnapped by the same villain? 4? More? Such a bumbling idiot manages to keep kidnapping the cousin and wife to a Laird. As I said earlier- the characters aren't the issue, the events and situations the author wrote for them is. Yet there is no justice by the ending, so more kidnappings can be had at a later date.

Would I reread? No.

Do I recommend? To fans of the author and the series, as well as those who do plan on reading the next in the series, as it's the lead-up.

Do I plan on reading the next? Yes, because the politics of the last third was the heavy handed setup for the next book featuring Brenda, at the expense of Athena and Symon's journey.

A quick, yet highly entertaining marriage of necessity romantic adventure filled with danger, excitement and passion.... enjoyed this visit to the highlands.

Athena Trappes is high spirited and enraged when the man she believes she loves only wants her for a bit of side play (burning his things might have been a bit rash).... now she is seeking safety in the wilds of Scotland. Highland Laird Symon Grant lost his wife long ago and is being pressured by the clan to find another. Loved the witty banter and thrilling action.

There’s not much better than a highland romance. I love the strong women who stand up to and challenge the burly Scottish laird. And there’s nothing sexier than a Scottish brogue and a kilt that makes you wish for a stiff breeze. Aside from those physical elements, what I love most is the loyalty and duty to clan in these stories. Between a Highlander and a Hard Place has all that and more wrapped up in a fast-paced, action packed historical romance.

After her betrothed, Galwell, turned out to be a smarmy little shite who intended to bed her and not wed her, Athena Trappes had no alternative but to flee England as quickly as possible. Galwell vowed to use his noble connections to destroy Athena and her family if she didn’t submit to his demands. With no other options, Athena, dressed as a boy, joined a merchant traveling through Scotland, until her uncle could contact help beyond Galwell’s reach.
Laird Symon Grant needed to secure the bloodline and produce an heir. Since the death of his wife in childbirth, his clan had simply existed. His clan needed life breathed into it again. Hope. To do that, Symon needed to find a wife. Burt his heart wasn’t in it. He knew he needed to move on but past events just wouldn’t let go.
After weeks of masquerading as a boy, Athena took advantage of the Mayfair festival to let her hair down and sneak a dance by the bonfire. When Symon saw her moving among the flames, he thought she was a vision. She was magnificent. Just the sight of her made him feel things he’d not felt in a long time. Unfortunately, Symon wasn’t the only one who spied Athena that night. Will Tinker, who also worked with the merchant, spied her as well. He saw Athena’s beauty as a means to turn a profit and abducted her. Symon had no choice but to abduct Athena from her abductor.
And so Athena found herself living among the Grant clan. She felt welcome and safe there, even if the entire clan seemed intent on seeing she and Symon wed. Symon was more than eager to make Athena his, but Athena wasn’t so sure. After Galwell, she was afraid to trust any man with even friendship, much less act as wife. Yes, she was attracted to Symon. He was all the things Galwell was not. Where Galwell was sly and callous, Symon was a man of honor and integrity. Though he looked like a savage, she felt she could trust him. Unlike Galwell who’d wanted her only as a mistress, Symon had offered for her after the first time he’d kissed her. And oh what a kiss! “He was a flame, and she went toward him as happily as a moth, her fascination leading the way.” She found herself anticipating each time he might kiss her again. There was definitely passion between them, but Athena had learned what trouble passion could lead to.
What follows is a delightful tale of Symon trying to seduce Athena, and her trying and failing at not giving in. Athena wanted time to come to terms with her feelings for Symon. He wanted to give her that time to make the choice on her own. But outside threats start closing in and Symon must use both seduction and sword if he wants to keep Athena.

I loved both these strong characters. Though they came from different worlds, they were perfect for one another. They were both spirited, passionate, fearless, and loyal to those they loved. I loved watching their romance evolve as they got to know one another. Symon was more certain in his feelings for Athena. And while Athena knew she had feelings for Symon, she was afraid to trust those feelings since she’d been mistaken before. The secondary characters were just as intriguing. I adored Brenda and the advice she gave Symon and Athena. I laughed out loud each time she thwarted Symon’s attempts to get Athena alone. Since this book ends with a cliffhanger where Brenda is concerned, I’m anxious to see what happens. I hope Bothan Gunn plays a big part in her story, and I’m really hoping Will and Galwell get what they deserve.
Mary Wine writes beautiful characters who are proud, fearless, and loyal. I enjoyed her clever, witty writing style laced with darker elements. The sexual tension, daring escapes, and political machinations kept me turning the pages, afraid that Symon and Athena might not get their HEA after all. This 5th book in the Highland Weddings series proves that although the road to love isn’t always easy, it’s always worth the journey.

I am really starting to hate the Edinburgh court and those dang lowlanders! Curse them all to hell! There is some hate from the previous books (you should read them and curse the court too).

To the book. Athena is English. She lives with her goldsmith uncle. A nobleman said he would marry her and she likes him. And obviously something is to go wrong because how else would a handsome Scot have her. That English nobleman, oh how I cursed his name and still did when I finished the book. But Athena is brave and ends up in Scotland.

Symon, aww, yes I have met him in so many books, and yes yes! We are finally getting Brenda's story after this (well I hope!). I have longed for her HEA. But yes Symon's too, because he does seem lonely and needs a woman.

These two meet, and if you have read the previous books you know which road it will take. But for the rest, I wont spoil it, but come one, he is a Highlander, ha. Sparks fly. They want each other, but she is careful. But oh trust him woman! He wants to marry you.

They do their little dance and then there is drama too. But there is also a build up for the next book at the end and I am on pins and needles! There was a cliffie regarding the next couple. But hey we all know a HEA will come there too.

I enjoyed this one! Passion and hellcats.

Narrator
Ferguson is a must for narrating a Wine book and I do adore his highlanders! Splendidly.

Mary Wine's Highland Wedding series has been a consistently entertaining historical romance series for me. I've been enjoying these books, these characters, and the setting tremendously. I'm always eager to pick up a new book with these books. Between a Highlander and a Hard Place was one I certainly could not miss, especially with that stunning cover. While I enjoyed my time with this 5th book, I have to admit that the books are starting to all blend together for me as they all have a very similar premise.

When a broken-hearted Athena is forced to flee her uncle's home to escape the scoundrel who pretended to be in love with her, she runs into the arms of a Highlander, Symon. Symon helps her by providing her safety from the wilds of Scotland. While both were instantly drawn to each other, Athena was adamant about wanting to give in to her attractions. As with the other heroines in this series, she was fiery and feisty. It took a lot of courage for her to run away from the safety of her home to Scotland and I admired that about her. Symon was also a good caring man who wanted the best for his people. He had lost his wife recently and was on the look-out for a wife. Though he was fiercely attracted to Athena, he never forced himself on her. He was constantly there to save her from dangerous situations. The romance between the two was great as usual. There was a lot of passion between the two that only seemed to grow as the book progressed. What I really enjoy about this series that there are secondary storylines that delve into clan politics and historical issues that keep the books engaging.

All in all, while Between a Highlander and a Hard Place did not offer anything particularly fresh in terms of characterizations and romance, it was still an enjoyable story that I think fans of the series will enjoy.

If the title alone does not draw you in, the storyline will. This is the first book I have read by Mary Wine and now I only want to read more!! The heroine Athena Trappes is a very high spirited lady who, when angry can be wrath itself! She is in love (or imagines she is) and is thinking she will marry Galwell, but he only wants her in his bed. She sets fire to his things and runs as fast as she can to the wilds of Scotland. She dresses as a boy to dodge Galwell if he tries to find her and evades capture. Taking a chance she dresses as herself at a festival and is spotted by Laird Symon Grant. Symon has felt loss but needs to secure a wife to carry on his name and he is totally enchanted by Athena. This is when the adventure begins and she is abducted. But Symon follows and rescues her and takes her to his clan.
Loved these two characters and their dance to capture each other. This story had a little of it all with humor, intrigue and of course strong emotions that pull these two together. Take the journey in the highlands and find yourself enchanted and wanting to read this entire series!

Rcvd an ARC at no cost to author..(netgalley) Well this had a lot of stuff going on, I mean a lot and then the ending you could consider it a cliff-hanger. Athena is broken hearted because the guy she thought she was supposed to marry really did not want to marry her but have her as a mistress. While fleeing she sees Symon who she is captivated by and vice versa. Symon is a widower and he needs to get married and have an heir but he is also reluctant to get married again but knows he has to for his clan. He notices Athena and is mesmerized by her. Now here is where we all get the convoluted we have kidnappings, all sorts of characters involved, lies and even though I understand this is a historical story some of the language just was a little too out there, an example (his manroot) come on!! what?!, but any how not that it was a bad book it just was a little too much, too many words, too many characters, too many different situations..I most likely will not read any more of this series or this author..

At times Symon likes to tell his woman what he has planned, “I’m going to toss yer skirts, sweet Athena,” he promised her with a wicked gleam in his eyes. “And once I satisfy ye, I am going to strip ye bare and love ye until ye have no more strength to argue with me.” Symon thinks of his woman's needs, “get into bed and stay there, lass. I’ll be back in just a wee bit. Need to shave this beard off before I come near ye, or I’ll scratch yer tender skin.” I liked this book, I loved Symon.

Highland Wedding series continues with Laird Symon Grant's happily ever after and Athena, a girl that unexpectedly stole his heart.

The fast pace of this story, its villain and especially the hero, are what made this story worth the reading.

Hope you get it!

The plot and characters were good- overall a great highland romance. The chapter length was odd, only six chapters in the book about 50 pages each. Too many bad guys and too many pieces of their perspective. Included two heroines which is always great and a lot of them rescuing themselves which is equally great. Book ends without a resolution for one character as a lead in for the next book.

It was okay. I didn’t like Mary Wine’s pacing. The story dragged and was slow paced then everything happened at once. There are lots of different character arcs and supporting stories that feel like filler and not always truly related to progressing the plot. It was hard to follow or care at times. I kept becoming distracted while reading. This did not do it for me but it was okay. The love scenes were highly lacking. But this was average. The main characters were likable although the heroine was TSTL at times.

This was a great introduction book of Mary Wine and I will definitely be reading more romances from her.
Athena is from a modest back ground who has her heart set on Galwell, a nobleman with the Queen's favor. After finding out he was using the idea of a betrothal as a way to instead black mail her into being his mistress, she rebels by tipping over a candle and lighting his house on fire!
To escape the fate of imprisonment or being Galwell's mistress, she disguises herself and flees North.

Symon Grant is a Laird in Scotland and lives with his Sister. After loosing his first Wife years ago, Symon needs to find a bride and produce an heir and bring joy and life to his keep and people again. And when he sees Athena dancing in nothing but a shirt at a bon fire, it's hook, line, and sinker.

Both Athena and Symon are charming characters. I loved how Athena was head strong when it came to Symon's advances and her safety, it makes sense considering why she was running. And it's down right adorable how smitten Symon is with Athena. I'm also a sucker for historical romances with the factor of producing an heir.

It was a little redundant how Symon kept sneaking up on Athena throughout this book. If Athena wasn't with Symon, I was just waiting for his dialogue to interject a conversation or thought.

Also, I felt a disconnect with Athena fully committing to Symon before marriage, as she's learned how important securing marriage is because of Galwell and how many bad experiences with men she's had so far. Their first lovemaking came off as bland. I was just expecting something a little stronger from characters like Athena and Symon.

Overall this was a great read with a different plot and I can't wait to see more from Wine.

A brawny highlander in a kilt comes to the rescue of a young woman without considering the consequences. He acted from his heart not his head. What is he going to do with a woman, obviously a respectable one, out in the Scottish wilds. Darn himself and his honourable ways. Now he'll have to go out of his way to return her to her family.

I was hooked from that point, or actually, from the point I read he was wearing a kilt.

The young lady is Athena Trapps, an English woman who is trying to escape a nobleman who didn't turn out to be the gentleman she thought he was. Every move she makes seems to open up a new patch of trouble for her and for her rescuer. Can she take a chance and trust Symon Grant; is he as good a man as he appears to be.

The story is set a time when relations between Scotland and England were tense and neither trusted the other an inch. In classic romance fashion, love is stronger than bitter distrust. Kind of swoon worthy for me. Each time author Mary Wine describes Symon as wearing a kilt, or donning his kilt, I'm in love with him again. Sure it's a whimsy thing, but a man in a kilt......

I loved this book and would gladly read more in this genre from Ms. Wine.

*I received this book from NetGalley in return for an honest review*

My Thoughts
Once again, I have found a new author to fangirl over thanks to NetGalley.  Mary Wine created something beautiful with this book.  Beyond the plot and sizzling romance, she added a touch of real history that I loved!  You can tell that she did her research for this book.  From the chill of the highlands to the drafty corridors of the Laird's keep to the hearty food that they ate, I was able to see it all and experience it all with the characters and I was thrilled!

Synopsis
The plot itself was one of a noblewoman, Athena, on the run for fear of ending up in prison after slighting a lord of society who had esteemed to make her his mistress.  While she makes her daring escape dressed as a boy working for a cloth merchant traveling through Scotland, she is unable to resist letting her hair down for one night to revel in what it's like to be a woman free from rules.  It's there that Laird Symon Grant first sees her for the first time and quickly determines he wants her as his wife.

The Relationship
I loved the dynamic between these two characters.  Though Athena found it hard to resist Symon, I like that she put in the genuine effort to try.  And I like that she was resisting based upon her very real past with the opposite sex, and not just because of insecurities or because it "isn't proper".  Her resistance gave Symon a reason to put effort into wooing her. The only thing that kind of irked me with Athena was she kept getting in to trouble!  I mean it was great that she wasn’t a damsel in distress and she kept saving herself, but either it would have been nice for Symon to full on be the hero and save her or her not to be so stupid as to get caught every single time.  And it was because she kept running away!  She was her own worst enemy in those instances.

Speaking of Symon, if there is one weakness that I have, it’s a man with bit of scruff.  Add those wickedly intense eyes, the kilt, the accent, and the promise of seduction, and Symon Grant is my type of man!  Though he was every bit the alpha male in this with his quest to seduce Athena, his soft spot showed in how he interacted with his cousin.  Treating her like a little sister, I thought it was adorable when he went to her for advice on how to win over a lady's affection.

What I didn't like........
When it came to the parts concerning King James and the many players in that court, squabbling about land and marriage ties, that part became a little muddled for me at times.  I often lost track of who was being mailed a letter and for what reason they were sticking their hands in Athena's relationship.  In my mind, the author could have erased that completely from the book and I would still have loved this.

Would I recommend?
Duh!  I loved this!  Though I was head over heels for this couple, I am still fawning over the small historical details that the author put into this.  And the promise of seeing Symon's cousin, Brenda, in her own story soon is an added bonus as I love spin-offs for really strong characters.

ARC REVIEW

Highland Wedding #5, A quick fun read that can be read as a standalone. The ending does have a bit of a teaser for the next book but everything involving Athena and Symon story is concluded. This is only my second Mary Wine book but I enjoyed this one much more than the other. The story was good, the characters were likable and I liked how they interacted with each other. You could tell this is part of a series but the previous characters didn't play an active role in the story.

Athena was a typical young lady, well not quite typical her parents married for love; her mother's family was from trade and her father from a titled family. They disowned him for it and when Athena's mother died in childbirth he abandoned her and went back to his family leaving her to be raised by her uncle. Athena thought she was in love but it turned out Galwell just planned to make her his mistress. With her uncle's help she flees Galwell and the terrible fate that that awaits her if he catches her. Dressing as a boy she joins a traveling merchant to make her escape to Scotland vowing never to be submissive to a man again.

Symon Grant is a widower, his wife died in childbirth with the child. As the Laird and the last of his line he must get married again and have children but all of the daughters presented to him are too affable, for him. His first wife was bidable and genteel and this time around he wants more. On May Day when the young girls of Scotland would run around in the morning dew Symon spied a golden haired beauty. Athena was happy to run around as a girl for a change but Symon wasn't the one to notice her and now she's not only running from Galwell but now also the blackguard who is set on selling her to the highest bidder. Symon is determined to protect her and maybe convince her that their chemistry is a unique and powerful thing and that marriage to him can protect her. Only now the young King James may have something to say about that.

Overall, this was a good read. I really enjoyed the banter between Symon and Athena. I love just how completely devoted to he was almost from the moment he saw her. I definitely want to catch the next book seeing how the teaser at the end is about Brenda and Bothan, I really want to know what's going to happen.

I received this e-book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion.

Athena, raised by her Uncle after her mother died, is a happy woman. She found a man she loves and loves her, her Uncle approves and she can't wait for her wedding. Her fiancé has not committed to a date though. Then her world falls apart when her fiancé informs her that his only plans for her is for her to be his Mistress because she wasn't good enough to be his wife and then attempts to blackmail her. To save her Uncles reputation, Athena leaves, traveling on the road with a merchant, posing as a boy.

Symon has been getting pressure to re-marry after his wife's death. Other Laird's send prospective brides frequently but Symon sees no possibilities in them. Then one night while attending market and a fair with his cousin, he sees her...dancing free in front of the bonfire, her hair trailing. Later he sees her again and he must meet her.

Athena is in danger once again when a man working with her discovers she is not a boy and decides to take advantage of it. He wants to sell her to a bordello. She escapes but basically lands in Symon's arms. All she wants to do is go back to England but Symon doesn't want to let her go and turns in the opposite direction, toward his home. Athena is still in danger because someone else is looking for her...

Can Symon keep her safe? Can he convince her to trust him?

I loved this story! Symon and Athena really were made for one another. When Symon brings her to his home, no matter what either of them say will convince others that she will not be the next wife of the Laird. Athena is denying her attraction to Symon at first but he makes her have feelings she has never had before...even with her "fiancé". I would like to read more about Brenda also, Symon's cousin.

Weee Symon's story!!!

Here we continue with seeing Symon finally find love after an arranged marriage. It's his duty to marry and provide an heir, but no one seems to fit what he wants...until he meets Athena Trappes. Athena thought she was in love until she discovered that he only wanted her as a mistress since he had his eyes on a richer prize. She runs away and seeks a new life.

This was all unrealistic and sometimes silly, but for some reason it all seemed to be crazy enough to work.

I liked Symon and Athena. They were perfect for each other. I loved the fact that Symon fell hard first and fell fast. Athena was worried...but look at happened when she thought she loved someone? So I get her taking time and made Symon do the work to woo her.

The external and internal struggles worked very well. I loved the whole scene with the King near the end. I was unsure how everything was going to play out. Bless you Brenda! You are the darling of the clan!

The ending left on a HUGE cliffhanger........what are they going to do? EEEE *requests the next book to the series right away from the library* I gotta know.

My biggest issue with the book.............Athena's name. The probablity of a 16th century English woman having that name is slim to none. It bugged me. Maybe there was one or two but one of nobility? Eeeee not sure about that one captain!

All-in-all, just a couple little bugs that annoyed me, but I enjoyed this quite a bit. The last couple have been just okay, but this was much better and worth wading through the others to get here. 4 stars from me.

Favorite Character(s): Brenda
Least Favorite Character(s): Esme......

Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Casablanca for receipt of this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Another great Scottish romance by Mary Wine! I have read and thoroughly enjoyed all of her Scottish Romances. Her style of writing is very descriptive and provides clear visual images of the characters, castle-life, and the beauty of the Scottish countryside. She manages to weave together historical facts with romance, resulting in exciting adventures! Between a Highlander and a Hard Place is no exception.

Athena, a strong willed woman, meets Symon, a powerful Scottish Laird. Athena, who is English, absconds to Scotland to elude her former fiancé. Symon is a widower laird who needs to remarry for the sake of his clan. Although they are from very different backgrounds, the two of them find that their attraction to each other (as well as having to get out of some dangerous situations together) helps them get past those differences.

We also see more of Brenda Grant, a character who has appeared in each of the books in this Highland Weddings series. While Athena and Symon finally find their HEA, Between a Highlander and a Hard Place ends with a cliffhanger regarding Brenda. It looks as if the next book in this series (which is scheduled to be released on May 28, 2019) will finally afford Brenda her own chance at love.

I always look forward to Mary Wine’s novels and I’m eagerly awaiting the next book in this series.
