June 25, 2022Brand's writing, backed by his experience with more traditional methods, gives us a refreshing take on ritual magick which will be especially useful for those who have been struggling with the complexities or intimidating nature of this sort of system. "Fear closes you off to magick in many ways, from simple procrastination to an unwillingness to go into the magick deeply enough to experience it fully... moving beyond fear is an essential part of the process," (Brand 199).
Anything along the lines of traditional Jewish-inspired occultism can seem daunting to the curious. hence why the status of "armchair occultist" is so pervasive --it can feel as though you can never learn enough, or be "ready" to work with "high ritual magick." Even books which do a good job of prepping practitioners for a life-long magickal practice (such as Dunn's Postmodern Magic and Kraig's Modern Magick) can seem overwhelming in the sheer scope of things they need to cover. The work of developing a proper practice: keeping multiple journals, divining before ritual, obtaining obscure tools OR developing a mind able to visually replicate these tools... Can prevent many for doing anything - hence why I think "low" magic is so much more popular.
Brand has thus provided us with something quite wonderful, an approachable guide to such lofty concepts as evocation and invocation of archangels! His writing is easy to read and not at all tainted by two common occultist tropes a.) purposefully confusing (for various reasons, some more acceptable than others) or b.) edgier-than-thou. There is no attempt to scare readers off or to press how deeply arcane this system is. Of course, sometimes fasting for a month, practicing lengthy meditations, and preparing a particular ritual environment can be worthwhile and enhance your results. But I have often felt that this is grossly overestimated.
Now, granted, do I think that my own ritual fumblings have made this book more effective in my receptiveness to it? Sure! Do I think that spending years in a traditional practice are necessary to get results with this text? Absolutely not; "I think of it like hammering away at a block of stone. The first thousand blows appear to do nothing. But with the next blow, an entire slab of granite can
crack from top to bottom... The same is true of your consciousness, your receptivity to magick," (Brand 203).
Brand gives a few "levels" of communication - through sigils, meditations, and e/invocations - which make the system easy to work through and fun to try out. His personal "combinations" of the archangels' calls are not only very effective but also something I've never seen presented in quite this way. It's clear that he has been working with these entities for a long time, and draws from a wealth of practical experience. He walks you through visualizations with exceptional competence, without stress, and explains magic itself and the archangels' relation to the occultist with a rambling grace that is absolutely delightful.
Every now and then one comes across a true gem when exploring the vast world of occult texts. This is surely one of them. Even if you don't plan to work with archangels, I'd recommend this book for the deep knowledge and insight that Brand has attained through sheer experience, and is generous enough to share with us.

Very comprehensive book
I haven't gotten the chance to use the magick yet but I found this book to be thorough, with lots of clear information. As someone who is brand new to magick, I really appreciate the author's perspective on the archangels and I am excited to start!

Great, first book i read start to finish!
I haven't tried invoking evoking as yet but I will, I was hooked and couldn't stop reading the book and I want to see what else lay on the next page, normally it takes me 3 hours to read a chapter and 6 weeks to finish a book, if I do not not get bored put the book I am reading down. Not this book I finished it in 3 days amazing, enjoyed thoroughly!

Good book. This is one of those books that require patience and practice and a focus on the right things rather than those things we think are important. The author has had experiences much like my own. I can relate.

I haven't tried calling on any of the archangels as I have nothing to request at this time, but I often feel that presence, that inner knowing. This could be a book to come back to if there is anything for me to receive and achieve with unorthodox methods.

Thought provoking
This book was recommended to me by Friend who also happens to be a medium. I wasn't all that interested in the beginning and found The 1st part of the book rather repetitive However the more I got into the following chapters the more interesting it became. I'm looking forward to trying some of the rituals and enhancing my ability to invoke and evoke archangels.
