Jane Austen was an English novelist known primarily for her six novels, which implicitly interpret, critique, and comment upon the English landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Austen's plots often explore the dependence of women on marriage for the pursuit of favourable social standing and economic security. Her works are an implicit critique of the novels of sensibility of the second half of the 18th century and are part of the transition to 19th-century literary realism. Her deft use of social commentary, realism and biting irony have earned her acclaim among critics and scholars.

The anonymously published Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), and Emma (1816), were a modest success but brought her little fame in her lifetime. She wrote two other novels—Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, both published posthumously in 1817—and began another, eventually titled Sanditon, but died before its completion. She also left behind three volumes of juvenile writings in manuscript, the short epistolary novel Lady Susan, and the unfinished novel The Watsons.
Since her death Austen's novels have rarely been out of print. A significant transition in her reputation occurred in 1833, when they were republished in Richard Bentley's Standard Novels series (illustrated by Ferdinand Pickering and sold as a set). They gradually gained wide acclaim and popular readership. In 1869, fifty-two years after her death, her nephew's publication of A Memoir of Jane Austen introduced a compelling version of her writing career and supposedly uneventful life to an eager audience. Her work has inspired a large number of critical essays and has been included in many literary anthologies. Her novels have also inspired many films, including 1940's Pride and Prejudice, 1995's Sense and Sensibility and 2016's Love & Friendship.

This short story, first published when Jane Austen was not yet 20 years old, displays an astonishing literary talent, with wit, sarcasm and humour. A young woman is essentially forced (by her own mother) to accept the marriage proposal of a man she in fact despises, for “social reasons”. It is a compact criticism of 18th century British society. It was apparently originally planned as a novel, which was never finished. This Swedish translation of The Three Sisters is part of the latest group of short stories published by Novellix.

"To Edward Austen Esqre

Very unlike the rest of Juvenilia pieces, thus one is so close to Pride And Prejudice in its storyline perfection that one wonders if Jane Austen wrote her best known work to improve upon this one, but left this one undestroyed for being too good to do so, and incorporated some of it nevertheless in the episode with Mrs Bennett being upset about Elizabeth refusing the cousin to whom the house was entailed.

One cannot quote any small bit without the rest, and it isn't small enough, so it's only possible to say, one has to read it to believe how well Austen has done the job of describing what goes on when a man proposes without being either in love or lovable, but has fortune too good to refuse! It's amusing, atrocious, all too real, dismaying, and more.

If only she'd seen her way to write up and complete this one, as well!

Written as a wedding present for her brother, Edward, and a good one at that. The oldest sister is torn over whether or not to accept the marriage proposal of a most odious man...afraid that if she refuses him one of her younger sisters will accept him and then be married before her, what shame!

A favorite passage: 'You are mistake, sir, in supposing so,' said Sophy, 'for though they may not be exactly in the same line, yet my expectations are to the full as high as my sister's; for I expect my husband to be good tempered and cheerful; to consult my happiness in all his actions, and to love me with constancy and sincerity.'
Mr Watts stared. 'These are very odd ideas truly, young lady. You had better discard them before you marry, or you will be obliged to do it afterwards.'

This would have been a solid beginning for a longer book. But, by itself, it's not that good. The main "couple" are two people so unsuited for each other that any sort of relationship would fall apart in days. Left to their own devices, they are unable to compromise on any subject. If this were taking place today, the marriage would either end in a very messy divorce or the pair would need copious amounts of couple's therapy. Most likely the former, considering both their personalities.

A satirical criticism about England's 19th century marriage culture pared with the in my opinion, insufferable female lead, Mary Stanhope. She is struggles to accept the marriage proposal of the grumpy and uncivil Mr Watts. Her back and forth is very entertaining, even though I hoped, the family would blow him in the air at the end, because of his rude remarks towards Mary. Still, I liked the story, it was fun to read Mary's and Mr. Watts bickering, I would have loved it, if it was finished and maybe a little bit longer.

Vaimukas ja terav kirjavahetuse vormis lugu, mille ainsaks miinuseks on see, et see saab liiga ruttu otsa. Ilmselt tuleb midagi kogukamat Jane Austini sulest laenutada :).

3 stars. This reminded me a little of Pride & Prejudice, somehow... like a grotesque parody or something. Austen did a good job satirizing marriages, specifically those solely for money and status. I enjoyed the humour, as always.
