This story is a bit of a horror story for me. Yes, it is a thriller. A very good thriller, but there are many parts of the story that make you hold your breath.
You don’t wanna get caught up in the frightening stuff. I’m sure you’d rather not have to face it.
But the thrills and chills are raining down on you, and patiently you wait for it. This is a very fun book to read.
The fire burns away the old, and gives rise to the new.
Another great adventure thriller with Kotker and Denzel, so realistic and loved characters. Unique experience in the jungles of Central America, ancient Mayans mythology, a psycho’s unsuspecting and malevolent intentions. Adrenaline packed to the end!
A dead American woman in a supposedly undiscovered Mayan tomb? How? What?
So begins another exciting story by Kevin Tumlinson starring our favorite archeologist Dan Kotler and FBI Agent Roland Denzel. When I read about Dan and Roland's adventures, I am so reminded of the old television show “McGyver” where the hero can fashion a fix for just about anything to get himself out of trouble.
Dan uses ingenious methods to get out of a locked cave, while Roland must work on his battle with claustrophobia. I tell you, these two are living charmed lives. I so enjoy their adventures and the archeology is an added benefit.Reading one of these novels is like having a decadent chocolate treat – but without the fat and calories!
I had a couple of very minor issues with the book. The writing and plotting is excellent as always with this author. The transitions were smooth and flawless in their execution. The book read way too quickly and I enjoyed it immensely.
I can't wait to dig into the next one in my TBR pile.
The Girl in the Mayan Tomb - a review by Rosemary Kenny
A young woman's body is found in a hitherto - or so it was believed - unopened Mayan tomb, discovered during an internet/Google Earth search by an inexperienced teenage boy and based on a true story. How did she get there? How did she die? Who was she hiding from? Why was she dressed in modern clothing, yet found in an ancient monument hidden for centuries by jungle growth and lack of records as to its whereabouts?
The hero Kotler is exposed to treachery by someone on the team sent to open and preserve the temple and to many deadly, ancient traps within the temple itself. A megalomaniacal opponent will stop at nothing to subvert or destroy Kotler and the others, while his own hired expert is on hand to find a way to steal the treasure that has nothing to do with gold or gems, but a far deadlier artefact that will make him supreme leader of the civilized world! Can Kotler and his friends survive and prevent this apocalyptic aact from ever taking place? Buy the Girl in the Mayan Tomb and lose yourself in an adventure you'll remember for a long time to come!
Tumlinson is a gifted and imaginative writer. In this continuation of the Dan Kotler series he crosses ancient culture with modern evil to produce an exciting and suspenseful novel. My copy had more than a few typos and wrong words, but the problems were easy to overlook s the thrills piled in thrills. I have read the previous books in the series, but this is perfectly okay as a standalone story. More than one surprise turns up along the way, and the ending is very different. I enjoy a book that delves into ancient cultures as it deals with modern pathologies, and this certainly does a great job of tying the past and present together. All the action is very realistic and full of suspense. This is one you will want to read again as soon as you finish.
I have read all the Dan Kotler thrillers and none of them have disappointed me. They are all very action packed and it is hard to put them down. It shows that this is the fourth book of a four book series. I sure hope Kevin Tumlinson starts another series with Dan Kotler and his coharts in it. All of these books have been basically about finding an old City or site from history and they have you hooked before you know it. Don’t miss one of the best thrillers out there. People are comparing Kevin Tumlinson to Dan Brown and I don’t feel that they are off base at all. All four can be read as stand alones but you will gain more enjoyment if you read them in order. Be sure to check out all of Kevin Tumlinson’s books. They are all fantastic.
I got this book for free and thought the title and cover looked interesting. This book was well written and absolutely worth reading. The characters were entertaining and well rounded. I'm an archaeology fan so this was the perfect read. Action, adventures, and history all in one! Now I need to get the 1st book.
Okay Dans at it again drawn into another adventure more life threatening then at any other time. Roland Denzel FBI risks almost his career thus time a new Mayan architecture has been found by a young man Henry Egan searching Google earth, Dr John Grahame asks for help though grudgingly from Dan Kotler and so the adventures begin. There is more than one story going on here and internal betrayal. When the site is opened a body was found of a woman Maggie Hamlton who had been missing for a long time and this is how the FBI are brought in. The race is on "Ah-Puch" the God of deaths tomb and what he represents is in that tomb and every body is after what ever it is. Dr John Graham and Dan get locked inside John found vital in the shape of the God it gets broken and John becomes infected Dan has to find a way out. This is once again an exciting story and the ending is just as important as the beginning. A must read book for all who enjoy the thrill of the ride highly recommended
This review needs to be taken with a grain of salt as I started the series from the fourth volume. To his credit the author does a great job of informing the reader about previous adventures without flooding him with unnecessary details. I found the pacing of this book weird and the part in ruins, which I assumed was but a prelude turned out be the majority of the book - that is on me though. I really liked the characters, though maybe they were a bit too perfect. One exception: the antagonist felt pretty flat with us barely learning anything about him, at least until the denounement. The final confrontation also felt very anticlimatic, even though the general plot was good and the book seemed well researched. As oft-mentioned Gail seemed a much more interesting enemy, I'm looking forward to reading the previous and next volumes to learn more about her.
Major plot hole and editing doom what could have been a fine book.
This book deserves four stars and I would have given it that if not for the poor editing and research errors.. I didn't look for mistakes. They simply were glaring and impossible to miss. For instance, the worst one is a terrible research error involving Mayan and Incans. The whole plot revolves around the Mayan appropriating gods from the Inland. The Incan empire did not arise until around 1450. Mayans had been going strong for 1700 years before that and by the time of the Incans they were in steep decline. This mistake, easily fixed by just a Google reference, wrecks the entire plot of the book. Fun action sequences and good characters can't make up for such a disastrous mistake. Ken, please fix this problem.
Why was the body of a Broadway star (missing for 5 years) found in Mayan tomb hidden deep in the jungle? FBI agent Roland Denzel and his colleague and friend Dan Kotler are drawn into the investigation. What at first seems a simple accident proves to be neither simple nor accidental as a cryptic message leads the duo to suspect that the tomb contains something far more dangerous than hidden traps a la Indian Jones.
This fourth outing for Dan Kotler is well up to standard with thrills and threats and surprises galore. This series is always a fun read. Highly recommended!
Another great book by Kevin Tumlinson in the Dan Kotler series. This adventure finds Dan & FBI agent Roland Denzel to the jungles of Mexico & Mayan ruins. A rival of Dan's is exploring the ruins of an ancient city (discovered via google maps & star charts by a 15 year old kid) when a body is found in an otherwise sealed tomb. The dead woman is an actress who died some 5 years ago. The FBI is called in to investigate. Wild turns throughout this book. Rival mercenaries & guerrila factions run around the jungle. Cremated human remains scattered about? A cure for cancer? A bio-weapon? What is everyone after & why? Read the book to get the answers!
There's nothing like a Dan Kotler adventure to take me away to the far last and distant places. Kevin Tumlinson's writing style is natural and immersive, his plots are original and believable, and his characters are fully-developed. Kotler and Denzel are a wonderful duo.
This particular book gives a fascinating glimpse into the world of the Mayans as well as a modern look into what it would be like to spend time hacking your way through the Central American jungle (I don't know if I could carry that much mosquito repellent). Here's a bit of info you may find helpful: an informed Redditor says that the name of the death god Ah-Puch is pronounced Ah-Pwash.
The Mayans were a mistery people who fell under the higher power of the Aztecs millennia ago. Their culture and history were forgotten and eaten by the forest keeping their monuments and art out of sight in the Time's Night. Almost like accident was discovered Chichen Itzá, and the rest is history (no pun intended). The fictional discovery of a lost temple, it's deadly contents, the battles and the traps, are the best anthropologist adventure since the discovery of Tutankhamun tomb by Howard Carter in 1922. Monica Beltrami. Montevideo, Uruguay. The inverted heart in South America, between Argentina and Brazil.
This is the second book I have read in this series and am very excited about reading the other 2 ! I am sitting here trying to find the words to describe just how amazing this book was! Many action/thriller authors will put ancient tombs or temples in their books but don't really describe them very well, the amount of detail in this book is simply astounding, it's like you are actually there seeing the carvings and trap doors!
You have to read this book, it is just too good to miss!
I have been hooked on the Dan Kotler thrillers. Like Steve Berry, who takes a piece of American history and weaves a suspenseful thriller, Kevin Tomlinson does the same with archeological discoveries. I enjoyed the interaction between the team members and that the team is constantly evolving. The only reason I did not give it five stars is because I am a traditionalist (I believe the Hall of Fame should be for exceptional players and not, as it has become the Hall of the Very Good). I look forward to reading the next effort in the series.
Wow gifted this book from the author via Voracious Readers. Started this book yesterday evening, read late into the night and finished off this morning! What a wonderful story, fantastic characters (to the extent I could not pick a favourite, although Dan may just have edged into the lead!). This reminded me of Indiana Jones with a mixture of civilisations, ancient wonders and modern high technology. An absolutely cracker of a good immersing book and I will definitely be seeking more of his books.
I see all the reference to similarities to Dan Brown novels, while the storyline may be somewhat similar, the depth is not.
That does not mean these stories are poor, rather they have their own "flair".
I shall continue this series, it is well paced and the characters are interesting, with new characters being introduced.
Wonder what's going on right now in Wild Peach Village, Texas. Southeast Texas, 50 miles inland from the Gulf Coast. About three hours from home at 190 miles. Once married about 80 miles north of Wild Peach Village.
Yowel !!!!! I WOW!!! 5 stars.. I would give it TEN..20 The whole sky!!
What a story... it grabs you and holds you I
This is a thriller that surpasses anything I have read.. there were no boring parts that made one want to hurry to get to the interesting part. This is a book that you must read. So realistic, so amazing, Thank you Kevin for writing this book. I see why it was in the top charts. It should be first.
I enjoyed this adventure and learned much about the Mayan civilization in the process. Tumlinson's characters are genuine and believable and their forays into this lost Mayan city were outstanding and exciting. I have only one complaint. Being this was my first Dan Kotler adventure, Tumlinson spent too much time rehashing and reminding the reader of past adventures that really had no bearing on this particular story. Nonetheless, he has fanned my interest and I will read more of his work.
Thanks a lot for these books. I just love the hero but also his friend Denzel. The story is believable and Ireally look forward to reading each and every book I can find of this author. I can tell you the full truth: anyone into this genre will not waste timein reading these books but share a wealth of graet adventures and good times with a lotof reader “friends.” Love them !!!!
Dan Kolter is drawn into a trip to the Mexican jungle as an FBI consultant when the archeological explorers find the body of a dead American actress in buried chamber that was supposedly untouched for hundreds of years. They the are on the track how she got there, who killed her and the existance of an ancient idol and a potential deadly biological killer. Action, adventure and suspense in a rapid narrative keeps the reader turning the pages.
Kevin has slightly spoilt me with his action pactect both passive and active spins, turns, and hidden agendas. This book takes a spin on some historical facts. sadly the beginning was a little slow for me...dont know why...I usually start and dont put it down till finished. I had to start and stop but finally was hooked for the nonstop reading. So go for it.
Great read, we get to see how good memory is useful I’m a cave. I for one as a former caver love that, tho a lot of mine was hands and knee exploration . As a fan of seeing ancient writing on cave walls , I smile when he drops that in to the story. These books are fun and present many things to readers who might not ever think of the wider experience of caves and the neat critters that enjoy their cave homes.. Thanks for the clever read.
I’m really enjoying the Dan Kotler mystery/thrillers. I guess I’m hooked. So, I’m a bit smugly proud of myself that I figured out one puzzle, involving an altar, before the reveal. One puzzle of many. I’ll take the win. Mr. Tumlinson continues to reveal more of the background of the principle characters, making them more interesting. If you are into mystery/action/thrillers, you will surely enjoy this series.
review of “the Girl in the Mayan Tomb” by Kevin Tumlison
I can’t say enough about the author. What an amazing cast of character’s. He has created a team of individuals that that can accomplish the impossible, which is what a good adventure needs. I really like the the development of Dan Kotler (hero # 1) and Denzel (FBI) guy and hero #2 as unlikely partners in this crazy world. I highly recommend this book. JJ
Kevin Tumlinson has done it again. A thrill ride that grabs you on the first page and does not let go. The plot and the characters are well developed and the reader is drawn into the story in a breathtaking way. I defy anyone to not want to read this book in one sitting........so beware. you will be hooked!!
I really enjoyed this book. Dan Kotler is, as always, amazing and his FBI partner, Denzel, is Kotler’s perfect sidekick. Or do I have that backward? This book is full of twists and turns, mysteries all twined together, and thrilling sequences. (Reading about the origin of Denzel’s claustrophobia had me in a sick sweat!). If you like archeology, mysteries and thrills, this book is for you.
Great series and awesome characters! I truly hope Mr. Tomlinson writes more books with Kotler and Denzel. They are well developed and you almost start to feel like they are real people! I would gladly recommend these books to friends, family and anyone who loves to read a great book!
Kevin and his Dan Kotler character do not disappoint. A very fascinating, fast-paced and intriguing read indeed. Another story in the vein of Indiana Jones/National Treasure franchises - this time in the Amazon rain forest and Mayan temple. In fact, a film adaptation should be given a serious thought...
