Cyn City is crumbling beneath the weight of water and wealth. Old New York is drowning, while Cyn City is building right over it’s crumbling bones. Ocean swells threaten the massive wall holding back the tides, In the skycity transhumanism means implants and virtual reality, but down in the lower depths where rats and mold rule, cyborgs are a hackjob of nuts and bolts, cynked together for strength, not beauty.
Chance has fought his entire life, first for survival in the streets of Cyn City and later for money and prestige in the underground Cyborg Fight League. After losing the love of his life to Rhumitisin, he never thought he’d find love again. Death closes in fast in the Cyborg Slums, and Chance doesn’t even care until he meets a woman who can see past the metal arm on his left side.
Verity has left behind everything she knows to start a new life in Cyn City. But her Ecovangalit upbringing has left her unprepared for the hard realities of life amongst the Cyborgs. When a dangerous man everyone tells her to stay away from proves to be the only person she can trust, can she lower her walls enough to let him in?
When Verity finds herself in debt to the wrong kind of man who will sell her body as fast as he will sell her soul, Chance is the only one who can clear her ledger, but only if he'll fight in the Cyborg Fight Circuit again, which means killing for the woman he just might love enough to risk his life for.
Each book in the series is fully stand alone and can be read in any order.
Book One: Chance Book Two: Enver More To Be Announced!
Note to Readers: This science fiction cyborg dystopian romance series contains lots of action, alpha males, fierce women, and steamy romance. If you love bad boys who love as hard as they fight, then this series is for you! Guaranteed happily-ever-afters with no cliffhangers.
Having read and enjoyed Pearl Foxx’s Shifters of Kladuu, I was more than willing to dive into the Cyn City Cyborgs books. I adored the wonderful alien world, and I had high hopes of how the cyborg world would develop. I was not disappointed by this one, and am sure I have a new addiction ready to go now I’ve started this series.
For anyone who has read Pearl Foxx’s Shifters of Kladuu series, or even any of the books, you will have an idea of what to expect from this one. You get wonderful characters, amazing romance, great chemistry, a fun world, gripping storyline, lot of action, and plenty of other goodies to ensure you are hooked to the story from the very first page. In addition, there is plenty throughout that hints to the future of the series, things you cannot wait to find out more about – things you know are going to be important.
Honestly, I was addicted. I was in love with the characters from the very start, unable to put their story down. There were so many things introduced throughout this one, and I cannot wait to find out more. I will admit to feeling as though the world building was a bit lacking in some places, but my fingers are crossed this is because these elements will be built on in the future – after all, with the possibilities in place for the future it makes sense that we would come back to some of the aspects that were not explored in full.
I’m so excited for book two, super eager to see how the story plays out between the side characters I came to enjoy so much in this one. If the Cyn City Cyborgs series plays out anything like the Shifters of Kladuu series, I’m guaranteed a wonderfully addictive series.
I will admit, I have a soft spot for cyborg heroes who are done well. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say I have a soft spot for cyborg heroes who are done a certain way. I like them ice cold. More machine than man. Almost unfeeling. Until that perfect woman comes along and makes him feel things he shouldn’t.
This book gave me that… a little bit. Chance has essentially sworn off women because he was rejected by his love for accepting machine parts. And he considers himself unlovable. I dig that. But the romance between him and Verity was way too easy here. We are talking about insta-lust, insta-action, and a whole lot of “mine” happening in a short period of time.
Let me back up.
The story is set in what is called Cin City, which is essentially a dumping ground for cyborgs and the dregs of society. Verity works as a waitress in a club which also stocks strippers, hookers, and underground death fights. Only she doesn’t know about the death fight part. Anyway, Verity is trying to start a new life after escaping from essentially a polygamist religious cult, and she will do almost anything to make it on her own. Chance is an employee at the club where she earns a living.
We hear a lot how dangerous Chance is. He killed a bunch of people in fights; I get it. But I was told a lot. About the danger, that is. I was also told a lot how innocent Verity is. Yet she gives up her virginity faster than you can say “you’re so wet for me.” All of the classics are there. Like him loving how responsive she is. Like some bitchy lady trying to make Verity insecure by claiming she had slept with Chance in the past. It just felt trite and like a mishmash of scripts from 100 other slightly erotic romances I have read before.
Verity goes from zero to “do me in an alley” in a heartbeat. She also goes from trusting and loving Chance to blaming him for a mess that she made herself and playing into his worst fears.
I don’t know. I didn’t hate it but I can’t exactly say that I liked it either. I rolled my eyes more than once and finished the story feeling decidedly underwhelmed.
If you are a fan of cyborgs or good girls who have to do questionable things in order to survive, this might be your jam. There is a fair amount of sex and violence… and does deliver on the HEA.
It was a decent read, however one particular plot line was a bit too hard hor me to swallow : Verity held her own against the cyborg and Chance was undefeated cyborg cage fighter and yet he gets so badly injured fighting fully human Elders ? Hmmm. I guess that the author needed this twist for resolution but I didn't really buy it. In saying that, I was engaged enough to be interested in the next book.
Chance is an offshoot of Pearl Foxx' alien shifter/SF series, Shifters of Kladuu. In the same time frame. but on the ecologically devastated Earth this time, Chance the cyborg meets ecovangelist refugee Verity when she becomes a server at the bar/underground fight club where he works. In the heart of the swampy Cyn City (formerly Manhattan) slums, it caters to cyborgs, laborers, and all the other undesirables and criminals the upper crust of the upper city would just as soon see drowned. This cesspool is Verity's dream opportunity, because the job, the money and the squalid room she rents are far better than the dorms of the cult farm where the baby-makers like her must live. What little she has here is her own - until the landlord ups the rent and she has to ask Chance's boss, the club owner, for more shifts. The 'contract' he offers isn't what it seems, and Chance isn't who he seems, and the upshot of it all is not the HEA of anybody's dreams - except hers. Complex and beautifully damaged characters, and an unremitting sense of inevitability, are the standout features of this romance that lights up its mildewed setting, and the reader's heart. My thanks to Hidden Gems for the ARC, my voluntary, independent sand uncompensated review is 4 stars. I loved it, but it's minus one star for persistent and egregious grammar/spelling errors that writers and editors both should know better than to publish.
The first in a new Foxxy series of Cyn City Cyborgs, this book introduces us to Chance and Verity. This is a well written story with plenty of action, danger, and heat to keep readers on their toes and turning pages.
Chance doesn't suffer fools gladly. He became a cyborg as a result of trying to earn higher wages to buy medicine to save his Love's life. She died. He then gave everything he had in the Cyborg Fight League. He's now finished with that, but his reputation still stands. Verity, on the other hand, has had a very different life experience. One that doesn't help her much on the streets of Cyn City, or inside the Bull and Joint. But she does have her own way of dealing with things. Verity believes in compassion and doesn't see any need for violence, but is drawn to Chance despite his dangerous reputation. Chance is also drawn to this stunning tiny pixie of a girl.
Two beautiful lost souls make a connection, but when Verity makes a very stupid deal, Chance may be the only one who can get her out of it. But at what cost to him, to Verity, and to their relationship? Excellent!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an eARC copy of this book. Any opinions are my own.
I loved Chance. Verity is new to Cyn City and finds herself working at a bar where Chance works.
Chance has been watching Verity since she was hired. He has been wanting her but knows that there is nothing for them. He was once a normal man but gave up so much for his ex. And he really doesn't want to go down that road again.
These two are such wonderful characters and I loved the story. I can't wait to see what comes next. I voluntarily read an advance reader copy for my honest review.
copy received for honest review This a different rad for me. I mostly read contemporary romance. This is a dark, violent dystopian story. I am not disappointed in the read and will follow the series. Chance was a good hero and a liked him. He was human but had a mechanical arm. So was he really a Cyborg?! He was cold not due to the cyborg part but because of his past and how he had to live. Verity grew up in a commune. In some scenes she is a tough fighter who can take care of herself and in others she is an innocent waiting to be slaughtered. It was hard to mesh these too things. Short story with everything happening at a fast paced. Insta lust and love. I wish the story was longer so that we could see more world development. The story has potential.
Verity was serving drinks at Cyn City’s notorious Ball & Joint, a cyborg hangout that would openly serve alcohol to the cyborg population. She was jostled by two huge men and her tray of drinks spilled food and drink all over Chance, one of her boss’s behind-the-scenes men. She found him very attractive, but she was told by her best friend that he was one she should definitely avoid.
As Verity grabbed a clean tray and walked past a table, an ugly brute cyborg pulled her into his lap. She hit him with her tray and told him he could pay other women for what he wanted, but she was not one he could grab like that. But later outside, she was attacked and smacked hard by the bully who wanted to get even for being embarrassed. She fought back, quite well, and incapacitated his arm mechanism with the heel of her shoe and messed up his jaw, knocking him to the ground. Chance stepped out of the shadows, commenting on her impressive defense. Then he insisted on walking her home. Again, she is drawn to the man who displays kindness one moment and cruelty the next.
Verity went downstairs to pay her rent, pleased that she made enough to have $50 left over to buy groceries! But the landlord told her the rest was raised by 175 credits – and she did not have the money for that. Then her old friend Imogen ran away from the same place Verity had escaped when she started her new life, and Imogen was bloody and badly injured. Verity took her in, but now she had another mouth to feed. Determined to fix this on her own, she went to her boss, Garvan, to ask for a loan. She had no idea what she was getting into.
Chance knew Verity would never be allowed to pay off her loan. Garvan would use her in an intolerable way. There was only one other thing he would accept to pay off her debt – Chance had to go back into fighting and take down and kill a powerful fighter. Would he do this for Verity? Would she accept the death of another in exchange for her freedom? And if she did, what would happen to them and their tenuous relationship?
This is a really good book that draws the reader in to care about these characters. Despite the squalor and devastation of their world, there is a kindness and goodness inside that gives hope. Despite starting at rock bottom with absolutely nothing, Verity looked for the best in every situation. Her bright outlook in the face of adversity touched everyone around her. But finding a happy ending in the environment they find themselves in seems out of reach. Don’t miss this one! It is exciting and suspenseful – definitely worth reading!
REVIEW FOR: CHANCE: SciFi Cyborg Romance (Cyn City Cyborgs, Book #1) by Pearl Foxx
Review Rating: 4.0 out of 5 stars
“Devil Girl in Cyn City”
Survival in the water-logged and moldy streets of Cyn City has not been easy for Verity, who had left behind her life on a commune for a new start. But being around Chance, a Cyborg male who signals danger with his attitude, his illegal tattoos, and visible cybernetics, who also happens to be the right-hand man to Garvan, her boss and owner of Ball & Joint where she works as a waitress is not really a walk in the park for her, either. Chance is highly attractive to her, but he seems to be content keeping her at arm’s length. Verity has managed thus far on her meager earnings, but when she is expected to increase her credit payment on a suddenly ramped-up rent in order to maintain a safe place to sleep, she knows she needs more work to afford food. But out of the blue, her best friend shows up on her doorstep in very dire straits, and Verity knows she has no choice but to see Garvan for a personal loan to provide for the both of them to survive.
Chance is not willing to unlock his heart again for a woman, because that has happened and has left him in the physical state he is now in. And heartbroken inside. How this woman who clearly does not belong in this part of the world can capture his interest and make him feel anything at all is beyond him. All he knows is he has to do something, especially when he discovers she has made a naive agreement with Garvan, someone who is not to be trusted at all. Like all the other men fighting in their boss’ Cyborg Underground Circuit, they have to fight to earn their way out of their personal debts to him, and Chance trying to protect Verity lands him in the very place he was trying to stay out of - the fight ring. Only this fight is one Chance is willing to take on for her, at all costs.
Sexy and sweet, there is hope for this cyborg after all. Chance tries to be good and do good in this corrupt and downtrodden city. Verity has a big heart and can see beyond all the bionics to the man underneath the metal, wires, and “plesh.” Looking forward to reading Enver and Imogen’s story as well. I voluntarily reviewed this book.
Oh holy hawtness! “Temptation, thy name is cyborg”. Chance is that cyborg. Chance was a normal man and sacrificed himself for the woman he loved. But now she is gone. Chance didn’t have a chance for a long time and was very angry. He in turn made a name for himself on the Cyborg Fight Circuit. Since then he has stopped fighting and mainly organizes and collects on the fights. Being that we are in Cyn City there is always someone that runs thinsg and people to be paid off. Verity comes from a commune where the men can take several wives and if they aren’t wanted the women are sent off for other jobs. Verity can’t take it and runs away to Cyn City. She ends up getting a waitress job at the Ball & Joint, also where Chance works. She is spunky and strong but doesn’t know the ins and outs of Cyn City. For some reason Chance can’t keep from watching her. When she pushes off the advances of a handsy drunk cyborg she ends up in a bad situation and Chance comes to the rescue but not until after she takes care of most of it herself. At this point Verity just ends up being a magnet for trouble. She goes to her boss and ends up owing him more than she bargained for. All in the midst of the madness her friend from the commune ends up on her doorstep banged up and bruised up. Chance is their only chance for survival and both of their lives and souls are on the line. Verity can’t imagine that someone like Chance, who everyone told her to stay away from because he is dangerous, would want to be with her. Chance can’t imagine that someone like Verity, so pure and whole, would be able to want Chance and not be turned away from him being a cyborg. This is sort of like a Beauty and the Beast without the hostage type situation, lol! Cyn City is a helluva place and totally deserves everyone’s attention. If you haven’t read Hollywood you should check it out too. It’s the prequel to this story and at the end of Chance we are set up for the next story perfectly. Love me some Cyn City!!!!
** I received a free copy of Chance for my complete and honest opinion. ** *** This review will not contain any spoilers. *** Earth is in ruins… Life is ruthless… Love is hard. Chance is a fighter, a survivor, a cyborg. Life has not been easy, but in his own way, he choose this life, even if only partially. However, as a cyborg, he is looked upon as less than human, less than a machine. Accepted by none, scared off by all. That is until a sweet young girl walks into the bar and takes his breath away. Verity is running from her past. Refusing to be what her community wants her to be. She takes a job that she doesn’t feel comfortable with and ends up getting in debt with the wrong guy. But after meeting Chance she realizes that she may just drag him down with her if she is not careful enough. Can Verity accept Chance for who/what he is? Can Chance brace Verity’s past? Will love prevail? Chance is a 4.5-star book. Chance is the first book in Cyn City Cyborgs Series. Verity and Chance’s romance is a beautifully written story. I immediately fell in love with Chance’s insecurity about his mechanical parts. And how Verity seems to be naive but will kick a cyborg’s ass that is three times her size. They made such a formable team. Both the main characters were perfectly developed. Imogen, Hollywood, and Enver were great secondary characters. They really helped to pull the story together and made it flow seamlessly. I loved this book so much that I read it in one sitting. I just couldn’t put it down. Now you may be asking yourself, why on a 5-star rating then? Because there were some HUGE grammatical errors. Without that, this book would have been perfect.
It was an ok story, I felt it could have been executed better. Overall, it held my attention, but too many things were either unexplained or not addressed or simply unbelievable, taking away from the story. I really feel that getting cyber body parts did not make them cyborgs in my mind. They didn't act like what I had in my mind as cyborgs, having some sort of computer type advancement to the brain in addition to the body parts, making them cyborgs. I also felt readers are told or given suggestions in the story, hints of things, but we really don't see the characters doing or telling. But my biggest gripe, is the lack of proof-reading done before publishing. Stuff that should not have been allowed to slip thru, like "passed" instead of "past", or "her" instead of "him"... At least one per page of mistakes, that really pulled me out of the story, sometimes just to decipher the meaning. I also don't see how the bad@ss Chance whose supposed to be unbeatable & so fast, got hurt by the zealot in the apartment like he did, it made him seem a lot less bad@ass & that part of the story feel forced. I liked Chance, for the most part, but Verity was just over the top -in either direction, either super smart, or super stupid, depending on the circumstances. Made her to unstable in my eyes. I didn't really see the connection between them, yes to chemistry, but not to the love match. The story did not inspire me to want to continue with the series. Definitely wouldn't want to re-read this.
WOW!!! Once again, I am blown away by Pearl's writing. Not only did the incredible imagery put me IN the story, but the soulmate-level love felt between Verity and Chance truly touched my heart.
I was also treated to a unique spin on the cyborg that I had never read before, and I absolutely loved that. I also met a cast of characters that I can't wait to read more about!
Verity really impressed me. She came from a very sheltered life and threw herself into Cyn City to escape. She could definitely take care of herself, but I like that she didn't always push Chance away, either. Because, let's be real, everyone needs a little help sometimes.
Chance was HOT. He suffered a huge betrayal by his ex-girlfriend which changed him forever. Dangerous, secretive, and yet chivalrous, protective, not afraid to share his feelings, he's like the perfect guy! And no, as the book teaser indicates, not all of him is made of metal.
These love scenes were SMOKIN'. But they were the type that weren't just physically hot; they deepened the connection between Verity and Chance, which made the scenes that much better.
I was so excited reading this book one. It was like being strapped in to a roller coaster. I know the ride is just getting started, and I can't wait to experience the thrill of the series!!!
I received a free copy and I voluntarily leave my honest review! This is the first book I've read from this author, most likely due to the fact that I don't usually pick up Cyborg type romances, but the synopsis called to me and I thought why not.....so glad that I did as I really quite like this one! This authors writing style flowed nicely for me with ok world and character building, a couple things I wish we had a bit more details on but maybe that's to come in future books in the series. I liked Chance, he came across as someone dangerous and who you should probably steer clear of but underneath he had a really soft, sweet honourable side that balanced him out and made him even sexier. Verity (cool name) was a good h, with only her one lapse of quick to judge moment that was resolved fairly quickly. She seemed to adapt fairly well to her new environment, having escaped some kind of weird cult type community. I liked the chemistry between Chance and Verity, high steamy level but I am happy to say not an OTT amount of sex scenes, just right I felt which didn't seem repetitive or like I needed to skim, thanks for that! Some really interesting secondary characters that I would like to read more about. Overall a really solid start to a series and I look forward to picking up the next one.
Cyn City is typical of the new 🌎Earth. Its a dystopian world, with ruined buildings and neighborhoods, bad air, gangs, and ganglords. It's the city of cyborgs. Cybernetics are available for those with money. Chance🐺🍆🌋💪 is a tall, handsome, ripped guy who has a top of the line cybernetic arm💪, and the skill to win in the illegal fights held in the basement of the club where the young woman, Verity💋💃, works as a waitress. Verity💃💋 came from a secret, secular colony. She ran away rather than be married👰 to an older man she didn't know. Women were second class citizens there, with few rights . Chance🐺🍆🌋💪 comes into the club often, because he works for Garvan, Verity's boss. The club goers are all afraid of him, he's a true bad a$$! Chance🐺🍆🌋💪 always has his eyes on Verity💃💋 in her skimpy outfit, and she always has her eyes on him!
Chance🐺🍆🌋💪decides he will be her protector and her lover💕 and goes about seducing her. Verity💃💋 wants to take a walk on the wild🐺 side!
This is a stand alone XXX rated novel. Two of the other characters introduced in the book will be the stars of the next book📑in the series. Great world building of dystopian 🌎Earth and descriptions of the cyborg men by the Author. Recommend!
I like the world the author has created in this book - a run down, desolate Earth and a city struggling to survive with its poor on the streets slumming and the rich in futuristic sky cities high above the scum. Cyborgs being created to do hard jobs and not military made is a new concept from what I normally have read from this type genre, and I liked the fresh take on it. The main alpha cyborg is awesome and makes you want to love him, even when he is forced to save the girl he loves by having to possibly kill a friend. The female lead was relatable but I wanted to slap her for how she responded to her cyborg after he got in a cage right to save her ass, believing her cyborg killed the opponent she just up and leaves him apparently because she feels guilty - boo hoo! It was so selfish i had a hard time liking the main female character afterwards even when she said sorry to her cyborg - but I don't think He was ever told she left him because she felt guilty for having put him in this case fight which he believes she can't forgive him for his fighting and killing even when it saved her ass! So my only dislike in this story was the females leads handling of situations!! Overall still a great read and I highly recommended this book!
This book was freaking fantastic! Full disclosure: I did not buy this book expecting greatness. Pearl Foxx is a new author for me and I just picked this up as a quick, sci-fi roll in the hay sort of book. What can I say? I have a thing for hot cyborgs. But I got SO MUCH MORE!!
This story was lovely. The heroine, Verity, is working in a seedy cyborg club where more than drinks are on the menu in what used to by Manhattan, but is now called Cyn City. The Earth is an environmental mess. The city is flooding and moldering around the denizens of the lower levels. Chance works for the club owner. He's a cyborg. Being a cyborg in Cyn City means that you probably needed cash so you had your body upgraded to work on the Deluge, the giant wall that holds back the sea.
I loved that this book wasn't one where the two main characters meet and immediately fall into bed. Of course, each finds the other attractive but hotness does not a relationship make. When they do finally burn up the sheets it's worth the wait.
I loved this book I read a snippet at the end of Pearls last book and I knew that it would be a hit and it definitely is. Verity was serving food and drinks at the Ball and Joint when two men knocked her tray and it ended up all over Chance her bosses second in charge, there was an instant connection between the two of them but Verity was warned against getting involved with Chance. Erity’s friend Immogen was badly injured so she takes her in but it’s another mouth to feed and Verity can barely survive as it is. Verity goes to her boss Garvan to ask for a loan unknowingly getting herself into a bad situation. Chance knows what Garvin is like and he will only let Verity pay him back one way so Chance makes a deal with Garvin to go back in the ring to try and take down their most powerful fighter. Wow just wow Pearl Foxx has done it again with this one, keep em coming Pearl and congratulations on a fantastic book. I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.
Title: Chance Author: Pearl Foxx Genre: Futuristic/Dystopian Romance **RECEIVED FREE COPY FOR HONEST REVIEW**
I have never read anything by this author and I admit I have recently found an interest in what can be termed cyborg romance. When I read the synopsis and found that not only did our hero have cybernetic parts (some) but there is a MMA element to the story I was there. Hot alpha men and cage fights, yup I will pay the cover charge to witness that event.
Anyway, the story was easy to read and engaging. Nice world building, it was not over done, just enough details. The characters were pretty believable when taken within the context of the story and that characters storyline. For good or bad, each character is who they are. Meaning our heroine is a tad naive but learning.
I really did enjoy the book and think this is a great start to an interesting series if the author decides to make it in to a series.
This KU library selection features Chance, a cyborg bartender living in a post apocalyptic Cyn City, the slums of the old Manhattan. When a fresh faced, buttoned up young woman walks into the Ball and Joint asking for a waitress job, he knows she's out of place. But Verity has no place to go and no money to get there. So when she's hired, Chance keeps a eye on her. Which is good, since she's a trouble magnet. Chance was introduced in The Draqon's Hero, and I kept hoping Tane and Kinyi would return and whisk Chance and Verity back to Kladuu with then. But, unfortunately, that didn't happen. Cyn City is what nightmares are made of, and the author doesn't pull any punches with her depiction of what goes on in a post apocalyptic slum. It's gruesome, gritty, bloody, yet there's a spark of hope that Chance and Verity will have a long HEA in the midst of the mold and the muck. It gets 3.5 stars.
Wow! This dystopian world was unique because I certainly hadn't seen something like it before. And it was so lifelike that I felt like I was being taken over by the mold and damp as well. Verity was brave to leave everything she knew behind to venture out into the unknown. After getting to know Imogen more, I'm glad that Verity was able to escape, especially with her innocence. I believe that that gift was one that Chance needed in his world where everything seemed wrong and dark. To know that she had gifted this to him, and that she trusted him, eventually, helped heal his heart from Rayanne's hatred of him. I am now hooked on Cyn City and I can't wait for Enver and Imogen's story. I borrowed this book through the Kindle Unlimited program.
A riveting read and a beautifully seductive and captivating book you won't be able to put down. Reading this book you will find yourself in a future world with advanced technology but the intolerance between people is the same. As a cyborg Chance is considered a brute but when he meets Verity everything changes. This is a magnificent story of compassion and love with element of suspense and action that kept me turning the pages. As always from Pearl Foxx, a well written story, with great characters and a lot of steamy scenes. I am so looking forward to the next book in this series. If you love Sci-fi you wont be disappointed. This is one of the best books I've read lately
I received this ARC as a gift and I am voluntarily submitting this review
Cyn City is a place where people sell their body parts and replace them with cybernetics to get enough strength to work the only jobs that can pay enough to support them. Others then look down on them for not being human. Other people hide away in cults and treat women and children as property. Chance, a cyborg who managed to keep his humanity, and Verity, a young woman who managed to escape the cult, somehow manage to find one another. The plot keeps moving and there’s plenty of action. I definitely plan to read the next one! I received an arc of this story and voluntarily left an honest review.
I liked the lonely, emotionally shut down mmc cyborg trope & his dirty talk…
“I promise, not all of me is metal.”
…🥵 Oh, I definitely believe you Chance.
I thought Verity was okay, but not all of her character was believable to me. I would describe the plot as flimsy. I get it’s a short book, but I wasn’t okay with how much was thrown in with little exploration. Did we need the evil underground-running boss AND the super toxic cult for conflicts? I vote no. I disliked Imogen getting added to the mix; it took away from this first story. Everything happened so fast, too fast. I stopped ~75% in.
What a surprise. I had a little trouble getting into this book at the beginning and actually almost gave it up. Kinda not my cup of tea. But am now glad I stuck it out for just a little bit more. The characters and bazaar world construct are unique and imaginative. I liked the whole "well, what the hell is gonna happen next?" vibe that kept me reading when I should have been doing other things. I recommend this book and will be looking to continue visiting Cyn City. Thanks Ms. Foxx.
Cyn City is a wet place were cyborgs work and live with humans on a earth that is dying. Verity has escaped from an oppressive society were women have very little value. She has run away and is in Cyn City working at a bar. Chance hates being a cyborg and the reason he is one. Verity and Chance's romance is hard to watch sometimes. She is so naive you just want to slap her. I really enjoyed their story and the characters of Cyn City. Waiting on next in series. I liked this story and the potential for more.
Verity finds herself working at the slums after escaping her past. Chance is intrigued by Verity but doesn't think his cyborg parts are attractive enough for her. I thought the book started off well but lost me midway through. The concepts of the slums and ecovangelists are intriguing but I find that Verity and Chance didn't quite click for me. I just didn't quite believe their chemistry and they moved a bit too fast for me. Some of their dialogue was also a bit stilted. Not the best but not great.
I've read Sci Fi books before but not with Cyborgs so wasn't sure how this would go but I shouldn't have been worried at all since I love the authors other books. She took the Cyborg part and made it so I thought I've read these types of books all the time. There's romance, fighting, bad guys, good guys acting like bad guys. You just fall in love with Chance and Verity. And when you get to the end you're like metal body parts, who cares! Definite must read!
Chance is a cyborg who runs the illegal fight club in the basement of the bar in Cyn City. Chance is dangerous his fist has solved almost every problem he's ever had. Verity brings out the gentleness and protective side of Chance. This book is well written and fast paced. There is action, drama and romance. If you like Sci-fi Romance you will enjoy this book. I voluntarily received an advance arc copy for an honest review.
