I picked up Not Your Average Cup of Joe because of all the good reviews I read. The reviews are well-deserved. This book is interesting, bordering on inspiring and the writer’s style is engaging. The focus always remains on the positive and the author places the responsibility for one’s successes fully on one’s shoulders, thereby hitting home a crucial message. We can’t get stuck in our past or present negative circumstances. We must continue to positively strive with purposeful actions and intentions. The author provides a very practical framework to rise above being “average.” He avoids being preachy or impractical. For that reason, I give this book 5 stars.

“Always be true to yourself, dream BIG dreams and work hard to achieve them.”
I’m a big coffee drinker and I am always looking for inspiring reads, so Joseph Braithwaite’s book was a good fit for me. Short enough to be read in small, meaningful chunks, this book is also loaded with enough information to get you started on your new, positive life.
Believing in YOU is the number one most important element in life. Good advice, right? Do you believe in yourself? The author “brews” many more good thoughts and encouragements like this one.
I liked that we were given examples of how small changes can make big impacts. In the time it takes to drink a cup of coffee… you can begin to change.
Here’s some more from “Java Joe”: Watch out for contagious behaviors; set goals; create your brand; GRIT is vital! And be an encourager!
The author writes in a clear and inspiring voice and shares plenty of personal stories and examples from famous people to illustrate his points. This is the kind of book that you will read over and over! Pour yourself a cup of coffee and get started!

Joseph does a wonderful job of intertwining his own personal life experiences into all of the best lessons in life for both personal and professional growth. I found myself surprised at some of the things that he has gone through and how diverse his whole life and background has been and I wanted to know more. I appreciate his honesty and all of the appropriate inserts of great and famous quotes. The content is everything I would want my kids to know before they head out into the world; common sense content that is often overlooked but so very important for making good impressions. Dressing up, showing up, grit, never giving up, dedication vs IQ and more. I loved it for inspiration, some great stories and confirmation that the basics still hold true no matter how old someone may be. Thank you for the wonderful read, Joseph!

Not your average cup of Joe, inspires action, but lacks a plan of action. Written in a conversational tone, geared more for motivating the lost.
Many subcategories, with little time spent on each, a sampling at best.
After finishing the book, you may crave more, more substance, more clarity, more friend to friend chat.
Although there were a few nuggets of wisdom placed throughout, it still felt too short.
Recommended as a starter to personal development. Something to wet your metaphorical whistle.

I'm not an avid reader, never mind an avid advice book reader, but I decided to give this book a try since J. Braithwaite is a local author. Not your average cup of joe is well written and straight to the point which I enjoyed! No need to sugar coat how to tell someone how to change their life around. Though some parts sounded a bit condescending, I did appreciate that it came from someone who's personally faced adversity. Nothing's worse than having someone who's never been through hard times tell you how to get through hard times. Although many of Joseph's strategies to approach various aspects of your life were unique, there were some things he said that we've all heard before. For that reason, I give it a 4/5! Worth the read.

An excellent, interesting read about adversity and the choices that we make that can help us thrive. Joseph’s practical approach to finding your unique qualities and using them in your every day life was easy to connect with. Whether you’re looking at making big changes in your life or simply want to improve the little things this is a great book to walk you though it.

After reading a book I usually have a last thought as I close it. For this book it was; "yeah, great stuff!"
The message in this book is nothing new. But, Joseph Braithwaite defines success for you and reinforces the work required with his own experiences and quotes from successful and influential people. He provides the steps to structure your own success.
I had the pleasure of meeting Joseph Braithwaite at one of his signings in Indigo. Immediately, he had me sharing my blocks for success and encouraging me to "go for it" and thinking "why not?" He also pointed out another book I should read from his vast reading list in the book. His message and steps for structuring your success is definitely worth the read.
I follow Joseph Braithewaite on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. He provides inspirational quotes everyday and reminds us to inspire others with our own experiences and successes.

In his eye-opening book, “Not Your Average Cup of Joe,” Joseph Braithwaite explores the idea that our steps towards success and self-realization can take place one cup of coffee at a time. Using his own breathtaking rags-to-riches story as an example, Braithwaite discusses our innate uniqueness and suggests ways to leverage this to become who we want to be. The book is written in a friendly and approachable manner with Braithwaite’s style being warm, open, and inviting. Unlike other books in its genre, this book never looks down on its readers and is free from meaningless jargon and clichés. In addition, Braithwaite never makes false promises or downplays the effort and grit required for success which is eye-opening and helpful. Overall, this book will prove to be a powerful source of inspiration for anybody who wishes to improve their quality of life. Highly recommended! – Review by Book Excellence (bookexcellence.com)

Braithwaite, who describes himself as “a working-class guy who just wouldn’t give up on his dreams,” debuts with a neatly constructed mini-guide touching on some of life’s larger issues.
With short chapters that incorporate salient quotes, anecdotes, and personal reflections, this handbook tackles such far-reaching topics as one’s own uniqueness, choosing to make change, the impact of luck, setting goals, and finding a mentor. None of the material is markedly different from the raft of other inspirational books; in fact, the author references some of these titles in his own book. Rather, this work is distinct because of Braithwaite’s down-to-earth, chatty style combined with his effervescent optimism.

Not Your Average Cup of Joe asks the question, what is average? Joseph Braithwaite investigates how, if we are all born equal, what makes one person confident and successful whilst others are cloaked in self-doubt. Within each chapter, we discover the reasons and answers to these questions. His insights are thought-provoking and reveal that certain comments in childhood can affect your outlook on life from thereon. Peers and teachers both have their part to play. However, this is not just another motivational self-help book. Braithwaite gives you concrete strategies to put into action. At the end of this well-written guide, you will have an excellent grasp of your own self-awareness and the urge and tools to improve your life.
What can you learn from reading Not Your Average Cup of Joe? Very much is the answer. Joseph Braithwaite discusses at length the roots of self-doubt, using Maslow’s Hierarchy in one chapter and showing how, sadly, some people are willing to accept the life they are given and not challenge it in any way. It is filled with motivational quotes which spur readers on to make changes in their lives, my favorite being: ‘Nobody has changed their lives by doing nothing.’ Braithwaite also challenges perceptions of luck, success and internal fears. He doesn't just advise people to challenge old beliefs and negative thought patterns; he demands that it is vital. My belief is that after reading this book and putting into effect the strategies within its pages, everyone can reach self-actualization. A well-researched and excellent book.
