Hard to put down...
Just as the quote from the Chicago Tribune says on the cover of this novel "Genuinely frightening. Hard to put down." Although published in the late 1990s this novel says so much about the world we live in today with regard to the upsurge of radical groups and fanatic leaders. The issue of cults and their remarkable ability to lure people in and steal their souls is laid out in bone-chilling reality.
The characters are believable and the plot is spellbinding. A fantastic psychological thriller.

This is my second Darian North novel and I'm off to find my third. She has the magic for sucking the reader in from the first word to the last. Daniel Behr has a great life. He has a good job as a draftsman at an architectural firm, a wife he cherishes and a five year old daughter who means the world to him. The story follows his life as it falls apart and has to be rebuilt again. It starts when he goes to pick up his wife at a weekend retreat and not only is she not there, he can't find her anywhere. It's a fabulous story.

My only real complaint with this book was that the description on the inside cover tells you something that doesn't happen til almost the end of the book.

Otherwise, it was a nice little thriller. There was a good flow and the characters were believable.

Interesting read on cults and how easy it would be to get involved and how not easy to get out.

Too much mellow drama. And the back cover synopsis was no where near the actual plot.

This was an excellent look into cults and the life of the "drones" who belong to them. I say "drones" because they are brainwashed into following an individual no matter how crazy that person's beliefs are. This the story of how one woman was abducted and what her husband, Daniel, went through including his daughter being stolen from him and his entry into the cult to try and get his daughter back. It also tells of how charismatic Noah, the leader of The Ark was and how he lulled Daniel into almost a sense of wellbeing himself.

Very realistic and scary in that this type of thing does happen.

Eh, I'm a little over halfway through the book. Some parts of it, are really keeping me intrigued, but they are almost always followed by a whole lot of unneccesary things. One, maybe two sex scenes in this book would've proved adequate, considering the story is not being told in first person, there's really no reason for them at all. Aside from that, it's a pretty good story.

Ok. Just finished the book. I feel a little robbed of the ending. I forced myself to get through the book, and the end did absolutely nothing to satisfy me at all. It got a little exciting for a short while, and than it was over.

This would have been 4 stars for the story, but honestly, if I want to read about people having sex chapter after chapter I will buy porn. So disappointed because it had nothing to do with the story. It was about a wife leaving her family to join a cult and her husband tracking her down after she has their daughter kidnapped. Lots of action and thrills but ruined by having to keep skipping thru sexual scenes to get to the actual story.

A highly suspenseful novel, well written, about a happily married man with a daughter who upon returning home from work one day finds his wife is missing. When it becomes clear that she has joined a cult, the husband is thrust head long into a nightmare. Lots of interesting facts about real cults, their origins, and how many (!) are in existence today in the U.S. thrown in. I really enjoyed this novel!

My first Darian North and will definitely not be the last. Once I started reading it, it had me troubled as to what on earth has happened to the Goddess of a woman that is Alex. Dan Behr surely got himself into a lot of mess. This novel will teach a lot of us a lot of lessons in life, especially the true meaning of love.

The first 3/4 of this read for me was awsome, could not put it down but then immediately the story lost its momentum and took a turn for me of anti climax and downward interest. If there was an alternate ending i might have given it four stars, but then again, i didnt write the book lol if i did i would have changed many things in the last 1/4 of the read.

Dan Behr thinks he has a perfect life until his wife joins a cult, abandoning him and their young daughter.

Terrifyingly true portrayal of cults. Fast-paced. High tension suspense. Recommend highly. Compelling. Captures the evil and terrifying power of cult mentality.

Disturbing, interesting, and slightly obvious look into cults, focusing on a man who loses his wife to a charismatic cult leader.

I finished by speed reading it. Agree with Maureen, fell apart at Part 2. A shame, could have been better.
