In the days leading up to and following the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election, artist Matthew "Levee" Chavez arrived at the Union Square subway station and passed out blank sticky notes, urging New Yorkers to express themselves. As the notes were posted to the wall, a colorful and moving collage emerged that reflected the city's rich and diverse personal responses to a divisive moment in history. In that moment, art and activism united a community. In this DIY guide, Chavez shows young readers how to create their very own art projects with a purpose. Young artists will be inspired to share their own perspectives and make a difference in their own worlds-from their homes to schools to neighborhoods and the whole broader world.
This book had great ideas and advice for young students diving into art. I loved how it gave an introduction to what an artist is and what an artist can do because it sets a great background for the rest of the book. I know I would have loved these ideas as a little kid and I would definitely try almost all of them. I also think this was a great read as a future teacher because some of these ideas could be done school-wide or in my classroom. Overall, I enjoyed this book and will consider the ideas for my school or classroom.
I liked this. I liked its balance of big picture ideas on what creativity is alongside doable and adaptable project ideas creative kids can do. I think there's a lot of kids out there just bursting with creative and activist energies that would get a lot out o this. I also like the expanding format: start at home, expand to school, and so on. Good book.
