Too light and taxes the reader's credulity to the maximum level... a fairy~tale like narrative. Everything is just too easy, it is like watching the old Disney family movies or Hallmark for that matter. I even cried at the Esme portions of the story but in the end, it is all without substance and devoid of the deeper drama and emotions that makes for a Good or even Great work plus no character development for the main protagonists except for what the author chooses to describe to the reader. The "witches" (Beatrice and Elizabeth) have more spice in them than their more youthful counterparts but still dependent on the author's descriptions and not on the reader's perception. I have read novellas and short stories that have more impact then this. Definitely not for the more discerning reader and it has no historical presence despite the stated timeline and genre.

That was such a beautiful yet heartbreaking tale!

I cannot express how much I love and appreciate Bridget Barton for taking the time and effort to write such a wonderful book!

We meet Georgina Jeffries, a young lady who has been living with her cousins since she has gotten better from an illness that took months to heal. She is spending much of her time with her cousins Fleur and Jeremy and really enjoys their company. But things begin to change for her when she meets the new Duke of Calder, Emerson Lockhart. She obviously has never seen him before, but she can't help but feel like they have an old connection.

Emerson Lockhart has lived in a lie, he doesn't really know if he is a Duke or not. But he makes sure that the world never knows that, but meeting new old childhood friend Georgie once again brings back his past. But he is determined not let Georgie find out who he really is.

But as fate decided she find out what happened to her only friend, a servant boy from her household who disappeared 10 years ago and never returned. But the Duke is conflicted about his past. He worries he is an imposter and isn't the son of a Duke, so Georgie decides that she will help him find out his origins and how he came to be a Duke.

But the more they search and dig, the more they realise how evil, conflicted and terrible his history is. Involving both her family and his in the separation of his identity and family. The more we read, the more we begin to strongly dislike some characters and feel sympathy and compassion for others.
I applaud Barton for creating such a heartfelt novel, the more the characters uncover of his origins the more drawn we are to his story and what happened to him

Love is questioned throughout, family and romantic love. Is it worth living for? Is it a trick, an illusion or is it worth dying for?
In this novel we find out that there are many who think that love is useless and cruel and not worth living for, while there are others who do not think so.

The more I read, the more I wanted to know why things happened the way it did. It was quiet beautiful, so well written and the pace was set perfectly, truly a remarkable story, and unforgettable journey for these characters.
The story felt so real. Even if I despised some characters, they were made perfect in their role.

I am so glad by the way things turned out, because in reality, life is hard. It's not all glamourous and picture perfect as some books describe it.
Life is about finding out who you are, making mistakes, learning from them, being resentful, regretful, angry and bitter, but also learning to redeem yourself, forgive yourself and learning to love yourself and that is what some of the characters did.
Especially the bonus epilogue that was included on her website. That was truly well written, beautiful and inspiring in every way.

Ms Barton, you have undoubtfully earned my respect and admiration. I cannot wait to read more of your works. You are an amazing and talented author, keep doing what you do!

Received a copy from the author herself in exchange for an honest review, thank you!

This book has much more than just romance. There was a mystery woven into the story that unraveled slowly as the pages were turned. Growing up Georgina Jeffries, an only child, had few friends except for Sammy. But Sammy was a servant and she was often forbidden by her grandmother to spend time with him. Yet they both managed to get around that command and enjoyed their time together. Until one day Sammy disappeared and there was no explanation. Years later Georgina meets Sammy again, but now he is a Duke with a different name! How can that be? I was pulled into the tale that shows the strength of two people determined to find the truth and the power of friendship. There are many twists and turns that will keep you guessing but in the end, you can smile as you turn the last page. Looking forward to future books by this author!

Disappointing

I was given this book as an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I am quite disappointed with this read. I was prepared to like the characters in the beginning (the protagonists are framed well to start and are actually likeable as opposed to Ella in Kind Ella... who was not at all likeable imo) but no real development happens to round them out, they are still sketches of themselves, for the most part, by the time the story ends.

The lack of character identity is not helped by the fact that the characters all spoke with the same voice, they had no voice of their own. They had the same meter and exclamations, "my goodness" and "goodness me" being the most popular. They used the same term of endearment, "my dear." They just all had the same word choice at all times, "keen", "nice," "kind," "little," "wonderful," "so very". It made for very boring dialogue which, interestingly enough, is what carried the story to the end. It also made them all sound something like an older woman.

I did like Aunt Belle. She was the only character I felt was well fashioned, even her use of "my dear."

Otherwise, I felt the story line just a little too forced. The author went out of her way to make the story one that hasn't been done before but it did not flow as easily as it might have had the plot been simplified a bit. Ex. How do Sammy and Georgie explain Esme's presence to neighbors, etc when she comes to live with them? The lawyer finding his way inside the home and bed chamber of a sleeping couple and intimidating them to give up a servant boy, not the usual behavior of a lawyer and perfectly unnecessary. What happens to calling like a normal person and having the very same conversation?

I enjoyed Emerson and Georgina's kiss. That scene was beautifully written, she felt her soul in her lips. Very pretty imagery. I also liked the early banter between Georgina, Fleur and Jeremy. It was witty and believable. I wish they had maintained some of that personality as the story progressed.

All in all, this was a solid 2.5 stars. It would be 3 if there weren't moments of story success that were not take advantage of due to what felt like fluff and filler.

A Damsel for the Mysterious Duke

*** I received an ARC in exchange for a honest review***
This one fell short from what I have grown to anticipate (expect?) from the author. The Damsel and the Duke were childhood friends although he was a servant in her household at the time. The use the excuse that he was extremely ill and convalescing to account for the years he was not with his father. The Damsel, Georgina, is convalescing after a bout of illness at the home of her Uncle during the time she (re)meets the Duke, Sammy/Emerson. It seemed strange that the author chose to have them both be sick, the Damsel could have purely been visiting relatives as an explanation as to her absence from home. The author needs to find another way to let us know that Fleur wears her heart on her sleeve as I recall reading this phrase no less than three times. Sheesh, I get it already! Also, Dr. Ellis is referred to as Dr. Jeffries (Georgina's last name) at one point, oops!
I did like some of the characters and the plot but I was bored with the execution. I don't believe I will even bother to read the "Extended Epilogue".

Wonderful

Another great story by Bridget. I loved how from the beginning they were aware of who each other were. The fact that they were friends from childhood made it all the more sweet.

A Damsel for the Mysterious Duke is a "Magnificent" story. Storytelling at its best. I love the two main characters Emerson Lockhart, Duke of Calder aka Sammy White child servant and his childhood best friend Georgina Jefferies. Sammy was placed in Georgie's family home as a infant. His origins where unknown. One night Sammy at age 11 is taken from his servitude and begins his training as the son and heir of the Duke of Calder. Sammy is never sure of who he is and when his father dies he becomes the new Duke. Georgina has been ill for months with a lung illness. As part of her recovery she is sent to live with her fathers cousin and his family. Georgie becomes very close friend with her cousin Fleur. At a garden party they are introduced to the new Duke of Calder. Georgie feels like she knows him from somewhere, but she has never met any titled lord before let alone a Duke. After several meetings Emerson accidently calls Georgina, Georgia and she immediately remember her long lost friend Sammy.

The two embark on a journey to find out who Emerson really is. There friendship and loves blossoms on there journey of discovery. Let Me Say this is Very Clean Read!! There is absolutely No sex at all just one little kiss, so this is Not even a Sensual story. With that said this was still very well written and crafted story. Sadness, a tear jerker at times, but enough happy moments to counter balance the sadness. The villains of this story are just pure evil. Two women bent on destruction of anyone they can hurt. They loved chaos and destructions.

I truly loved this amazing story!!

The Duke🐺🔥 Finds Himself in Her💃 Eyes

Georgina💋💃 goes for an extended visit to her Cousin Felix's estate in Devonshire, called Winton House. It is near The sea and her family thought she would recuperate from her illness there faster.
Her cousin, Fleur, is happy to see her. They are the same age and even look like sisters! Fleur catches Georgina💋💃 up on the local gossip, including the news That the young, new Duke of Calder, Emmerson Lockhart🐺🔥, is giving a garden party to get acquainted with all the local gentry.

Emmerson🐺🔥 is a mysterious figure because he was not raised at Calder Hall, and has just recently returned when his father died. Although Emmerson🐺🔥 was never told The particulars, he knows his mother was not the sickly Duchess. He was sent to Eton at eleven by his father, to become a cultured, educated, young man, so that he could someday become the Duke.
Giving the Garden Party will be his first foray into the life of a true Duke. Luckily he has two long employed trusted servants who will make him and the party a success.
When Georgina💋💃 and Emmerson🐺🔥 meet, she sees something familiar about him but can't place him. Emmerson recognizes her right away!, but he doesn't let on that he knows her.
What follows is a sweet and sad mystery, and discovery of true 💘love!
This is a chaste romance💘 set during the recency period in England.

The Author kindly fronted me this book for a Voluntary and Honest Review.

Included is an additional book, " The Beauty and The Scarred Duke", which is also a sweet recency romance and a very well written version of Beauty and The Beast. I reviewed this book when I read it separately.

A Damsel for the Mysterious Duke is another winner for Barton. It is such a creative plot and the characters are so well written. I just loved it.

Georgina Jeffries is recovering from an illness by staying with her cousins. She immediately finds friendship in her cousins, Jeffrey and Fleur. Georgina and her cousins attend a garden party for the new Duke of Calder, Emerson Lockhart. When Georgina is introduced to him, she immediately feels drawn to him. He appears to be the same with her.

What Georgina does not know is that the new Duke of Calder is not who he appears to be. He is really Sammy, Georgina's childhood friend. Sammy had come to Georgina's residence as a baby and grew up as a childhood servant, but he and Georgina were the best of friends despite their different stations in life. Sammy was taken as a child from Georgina's residence to completely have his life transformed. He became Emerson, the Duke of Calder, but when he is reunited with Georgina he is overjoyed to find his old friend. The two never forgot about each other. As Georgina spends more time with Emerson, she discovers he is Sammy. The two set out to discover who Sammy's parents are and discover if he really is the rightful Duke. The mystery takes them to visit family and as they embark on this search, they spend more and more time together and begin to fall in love. But Emerson feels he cannot tell Georgina how he feels until he knows who he is.

The book is well written and holds your interest.

Another great story by Bridget Barton. I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. When Georgina “Georgie” Jeffries finds her childhood friend, Samuel “Sammy” White, is now the Duke of Calder, it’s very interesting to see how they work together—along with Georgie’s cousins Fleur and Jeremy—to discover who Sammy really is. Is he really the son of the Duke of Calder? There are surprises on this journey, as well as meeting some very nice people and some very horrible people. They all make this a fascinating story with a wonderful happy ending. I also greatly enjoyed the Extended Epilogue at the end of the story. It added information to help understand one of the characters you had to dislike. I would recommend this book to everyone. I received an advance reader copy of this book and this is my honest review of the story.

"A Damsel for the Mysterious Duke" by Bridget Barton
A 'sweet and clean" Regency "suspense filled" Romance. I truly loved this story, and believe whole heartedly that ... IF you like regency era romance stories... you too will love this story. This story spans several decades while remaining firmly planted in the present. Oh, there is so much I want to say... but heaven forbid I say anything to spoil the suspense of just how the webs woven in the past are unraveled in the present. I was gifted with a copy of this story and I am ever so thankful for the hours of reading enjoyment I derived from this story. Wishing you ... Happy Reading !

Excellent book!

*Special note* I received this ARC in exchange for a review.
Bridget Barton has written another great story. This particular one tells the story of a young woman assisting the Duke in his search for answers about his mysterious past. Both of them knew each other as very young children. He was taken away in the dead of the night never to be seen again...until they met again as adults at a social party. They loved each other as children. It is fair to say that time has only increased their desires to be together. It's a lovely story built up well and I was able to enjoy it.

Solid romance

If you're looking for a fairly straightforward romance without a lot of angst and drama then I would recommend this book. The book is almost completely character driven. Even though it's a regency historical piece, it doesn't sidetrack into endless scenery descriptions or get bogged down in historical details. The main characters, Georgina and Samuel/Emerson have a believable friendship which blossoms as the book progresses. The villains' actions, while reprehensible, aren't completely outside the bounds of probability, particularly for the era. All in all, it's a satisfying read.

Plot: 3/5
Characterisation: 3/5
Prose: 4/5
How much I enjoyed it: 3/5

I find this lacking in romance, with the leads spending more time apart trying to solve the mystery. It would be nice if the mystery is an interesting one to make up for the dismal romance but its too simple that I could figure it out way early in the story.

I found this a good book. The Duke of Calder has had a hard strange life. Living for many years as a servant in a big house unable to truly be a friend to the daughter of the house. One day that all changes as he is whisked away to be trained as a gentleman and made into a Duke. Many years later he once again finds himself with his childhood friend will she remember her old friend.

Mystery, friendship and romance with a HEA

Georgina is determined to find out the origins of her best friend growing up Sammy White who mysteriously disappeared one night when she was nine and he was eleven. What she finds are two extraordinarily evil women that tore apart young Sammy's life without a second thought. One of the women being her now deceased grandmother Elizabeth. Georgina will do everything in her power to help her old friend who is no longer the sweet servant boy that was her best friend but a handsome young Duke of Calder.

An intriguing take of lies, bitterness and deceit exposed

Two bitter women wreaked havoc on those they should have loved and cherished. When Georgiana meets the new young Duke and discovers he is her childhood playmate and friend who had mysteriously disappeared 11 years ago, it is their friendship and love that has them searching for the truth. Excellent story and wonderful characters! You definitely want to read the extended epilogue offered at the end of the book.

I purchased Damsel For the Mysterious Duke by Bridget Barton and this review was given freely.
Written in the regency style this full length novel has many long picturesque descriptions and flowery but redundant sentences with frequent aside comments.
Scandal, mystery, love and an unexpected reunion are just a few of the themes that make this an interesting and entertaining tale.

A magnificent read! I could not put it down. Sammy’s story is the perfect fairytale. The banter, and pace of the story is almost melodic. Sometimes books do not flow but this one definitely does. I was left with a huge smile on my face and joy in my heart from the beautiful outcome of the love between Georgie and Sammy. Well done Bridget!
