About the author

Sometimes called the "godmother" of the Animal Reiki movement, Kathleen Prasad is the global leader in the profession. She is founder of Animal Reiki Source, which offers the world's first extensive and specialized curriculum and training program in animal Reiki. Kathleen's teachings are highly regarded by animal lovers, veterinarians, animal care professionals, as well as shelter and sanctuary staff and volunteers around the world.

Kathleen Prasad is the president and co-founder of the Shelter Animal Reiki Association (SARA).  That Reiki association is the only one of its kind and is dedicated to rescued animals and their caretakers.  I’ve read her book “Reiki for Dogs”, so I knew the basics of her Animal Reiki Practitioner Code of Ethics but wanted to know more.  This book more than satisfied that desire.

I’ve been practicing Reiki for several months and it’s been quite a spiritual journey.  My Reiki teacher is Bill Stevens, who is a past student of Kathleen Prasad’s.  Kathleen put this code together ten years ago and Bill uses it in his teaching of Reiki.  He teaches his students about asking the animal for permission when offering Reiki, which is something I’ve been doing but didn’t have a complete understanding of it as most of the classes I took were devoted to working with humans.  Kathleen does a beautiful in-depth job of explaining the difference between offering Reiki to humans and offering it to animals.  With humans we use our hands to transfer the energy.  With animals, it’s more of a deeper heart to heart connection.  She also reinforced Bill’s teaching that we shouldn’t approach Reiki with the idea that we have to fix something that’s wrong with the animal or heal it but rather just “Be” Reiki and share the Reiki space with the animal.  Simply trust Reiki to do what’s needed. 

Kathleen also includes many detailed, step-by-step Reiki meditations that are just beautiful and that I’m looking forward to incorporating in my practice.  I know I’m going to refer to this book again and again as a I strive to learn how to integrate the Reiki principles into my everyday life, not just when I’m practicing Reiki.

Most highly recommended for all animal Reiki practitioners.

"Healing Virtues: Transforming Your Practice Through the Animal Reiki Practitioner Code of Ethics" is filled with useful suggestions that will help Reiki practitioners expand their practice to include animal clients.

Kathleen explains the importance of working in accordance with an ethical code when treating animals, as their requirements differ from a human client when receiving a Reiki treatment.

The author shows the depth of her experience by sharing the best ways to explain what Reiki is, how it can aid healing on all levels, and what to expect when working with human and animal clients. I loved it because it’s simple, straight to the point and easy to understand.

Kathleen breaks down the issues and roadblocks that practitioners may stumble across during their time as an animal Reiki practitioner. This simple code of ethics covers every aspect of what the practitioner might expect.

The book comprises of five lessons which detail the purpose and guiding principles of her code of ethics. Several meditations are included to help the reader deepen their practice and connection to the animals in a “Reiki space.”

As an animal Reiki Practitioner it amazes me how many people, Practitioner or otherwise think Reiki sessions with animals should be the same as if they were human. Anyone who has tried to give Reiki to a cat on a therapy table knows the cat rarely stays there when you try to place your hands on them...
This beautifully written book gives clear examples of how an animal Reiki session should be and mentions in great detail the ethics involved when working with animals, their carers ( whether owned or in a rescue) and in an animal Reiki business.
Kathleen explains that animal Reiki is all about the heart to heart connection and nothing about the hands.
This book also includes some beautiful meditations and animal Reiki stories which are truly inspiring. It also mentions compassion fatigue within animal work, this isn’t talked about enough and should I feel be recognised more in all medical and healing modalities.
I would like to thank Kathleen for writing such a wonderful and informative book giving credibility to animal Reiki. I feel very honoured to have had the opportunity to review this book and hope it becomes the “bible” for animal Reiki practitioners in the future.

Excellent for any Reiki practitioner

I loved this book for many reasons. I think that any Reiki practitioner would benefit from this book. Prasad's philosophies and meditations are beautiful. I learned so much from this book about how to work with animals. Just the few practice sessions I have done since reading this have been really beneficial for me and the animals. I can't recommend this book enough!

I wholeheartedly recommend this book for any Reiki practitioner who wants to work with or connect with animals. In fact, this book is full of wonderful ways for anyone to connect more closely with animals.
I learned so much about the special relationship with animals and Reiki and feel even more blessed by both!
