This was an intriguing and well told tale of The Little Mermaid.

I enjoyed quite a few things about it, including Jariel, his noble character, his heart, and his goals and dreams.
I especially enjoyed the little nods and references to the original tale: the “kiss the girl” moment, the Aureole ship, Mera’s rival Nessa, Mera being called Little Mera, etc.
I thought the elements of faith were lovely in this story. Mera’s journey to faith was touching and I found myself relating to it and even tearing up a time or two.

As a story overall, it wasn’t for me. The Little Mermaid is one of my least favorite fairy tales and I have a really hard time finding any retelling or version I really like. I knew I had to read this one, however, because I didn’t want to miss out on a single book in this Crown Of Stars series.

If you enjoy The Little Mermaid, this retelling is worth checking out!

An excellent continuation of an incredible series!

These books just keep getting better & better! What an exceptionally fantastic retelling of the classic faerietale, The Little Mermaid! The characters are amazingly complex, relatable, & so well fleshed-out. The story world is beautifully imagined & the story itself an awesome, wild ride.

A clean, adventurous, fantasy romance, I would HIGHLY recommend! Due to some mature content in regards to violence, I would certainly caution young readers.

Finding Mera is the third installment of the Crown of Stars series and one I was really looking forward to because it’s a spin on one of my favorite fairy tales: The Little Mermaid.

Finding Mera brings back Jariel Easton (first seen in Saving Beauty) and finds him and his crew trying to recover from the sudden loss of their ship’s Mera and the miracle of a new Mera arriving in their time of need as a new danger threatens their world.

Easton yearns for the freedom to be his own person and make the seas a fairer place for sailors like himself. He’s also searching for the legendary lost crown—and this quest puts him on a dangerous path with a high cost if he chooses to continue. I really enjoyed that he is a noble character who is sincere in his intentions, even if he isn’t always certain of the next step he should take.

Mera longs to escape the nightmares and mystery of her past and find a place where she belongs. She is curious about the world around her and the history of her people and searches for light in a world of shadows. I loved how she stands by her convictions even when the odds are against her and it may mean heartache for herself. She truly cares about those who become her friends and wants to fulfill the greater purpose she believes the Mera have been called to.

I thought the concept of what a Mera is puts a really unique twist on the mermaid aspect of the original fairy tale. A Mera's bond is not only with the ship's master but the ship itself, and the survival and wellbeing of ship and crew all depend on the Mera's abilities and strengths.

Traveling along with Easton and Mera, the story moves quickly and weaves a completely new take on a familiar story. I really enjoyed Finding Mera, and it's my favorite of the series so far!

I was already predisposed to like this book having read Chasing Cinders. My expectations were met and exceeded. At every turn, the characters surprised me. This particular tale presents a hero in a tight spot and a heroine filled with self-doubt. Both are plucky characters, though, and how they overcome their personal troubles and learn to trust builds a tale you shouldn't pass up. My favorite character in this book is Ari. The way he works out his problems and doesn't quit, even when he's discouraged, inspired and encouraged me.
I love how the author is building up her fantasy realm. Her retellings are like no others I've encountered and therein lies a great joy. The connections are interesting and keep me wondering what will happen next, while I still gain closure from each book in the series. (I'm only missing out on book 1, which I'll be working hard to pick up soon, and book 4 which just came out. Can't wait to see how those fit into the series!)
If you enjoy fairytale retellings, you won't go wrong giving this one a try.
