'Beautifully illustrated and designed for a broad demographic of just about anyone with even a modicum of scientific curiosity. In fact, there are so many photos, paintings, maps and drawings that one could skip the text entirely and still learn a great deal about the life and times of Charles Darwin, but don't. Van Wyhe knows his stuff. He writes with authority and is quick to dispel many of the myths and inaccuracies that have circulated since Darwin's passing in 1882. His artful melding of science and history makes great reading.

Tato populárně-naučná publikace popisuje život a vědeckou dráhu Charlese Darwina, jednoho z nejpřednějších vědců vůbec - a to formou velmi dobře přístupnou širší veřejnosti, včetně těch, kteří do přírodních věd nevidí a běžně jim třeba nevěnují tolik pozornosti.
Text samotný je podle ého psaný velmi srozumitelně, v souvislostech, a to i tehdy, kde se publikace snaží více Darwinovu vědeckou práci. Darwinova práce jako taková se zdá být dost obsáhlá a komplexní - tato publikace se ji snaží přiblížit sice stručněji, ale kompaktně a hlavně srozumitelně, aby i ti, kdo se o přírodní vědy běžně nezajímají, dokázali pochopit, čím přesně se Darwin vlastně zabýval a jak to zapadalo nejen do kontextu jeho života, ale i do kontextu doby, v níž Darwin působil. Aspoň takto na mne ta textová část dělala dojem.
Tato kniha zároveň obsahuje obrazovou část, která je skutečně bohatá a skvěle doplňuje tu část textovou. Z těch obrazových materiálů jsem tady byla skutečně nadšená.
Hodnotím naplno. Za mne totiž tahle publikace splnila vše, co jsem od ní očekávala. Poutavě popsaný život Ch. Darwina, srozumitelný a do kontextu zasazený popis jeho práce bez toho, že bych se cítila zahlcená příliš odbornými pasážemi, a výborně zvládnutou obrazovou část - to vše jsem tu dostala. Jako humanitně zaměřený člověk, kterého přírodní vědy více méně míjejí, vnímám tuhle knihu nadmíru pozitivně. Právě poroto, že mne přírodní vědy míjejí, tak přesně v tomhle rozsahu a podání, co tato kniha nabízí, mi to zcela postačuje.
Pokud od Darwinovi již něco víte nebo se o přírodní vědy zajímáte, tak je možné, že vám tohle asi moc nového nedá. Ale pokud jste na tom stejně jako já a toto téma vám nikdy moc blízké nebylo, ale přesto se o Darwinovi chcete něco dozvědět, tak by vás to mohlo zaujmout.

As you might imagine, the NHM makes lovely coffee table books. This is no exception.
A beautifully illustrated book covering Darwin’s life and work and including many examples of his notes, diaries, maps, etc.
Beside these runs a well written biographical narrative that draws out key points and corrects common misconceptions about the man, his work, and his beliefs.

Darwin being an honorary Latino wasn’t on my bingo card this year, yet here we are. After this book he’s definitely going to be on my top 3 of scientists, and what did it for me was the fact that he had to do a pros and cons list to get married (with a shorter list of pros), and decided to do it anyways (relatable). Don Carlos you are so important to me, may your legacy live on forever 🤍

This book is partly a travelogue, partly an introduction to geology and zoology, but above all, it's the life story of a man who understood and described the fundamental mechanism of the evolution of natural species. Very well-written and illustrative.
