On a night like this, magic can happen. Seven couples. Seven stories. One night. A night for love.
Mark is a respectable banker during business hours, but on a Saturday night he becomes the fabulous Allotta Moxie, drag queen extraordinaire. Allotta is everything Mark is not—confident, bold, sassy, and well-loved. He wishes he had a quarter of her self-assurance, especially when it comes to Joel, the new hire at work. Most men run a mile when they discover Allotta hiding in his closet. She's a lot to take on. So what will be Joel’s reaction when he meets Allotta for the first time? And more importantly, will Allotta like Joel?
Sean Kennedy lives in the second-most isolated city in the world, thinks there are thylacines still out in the wild, and eagerly awaits the return of Twin Peaks in 2017.
I really enjoyed this book, and looking forward to reading the rest of the series as it comes out. Mark was a sweet guy, who seems to share his mind with his Drag Queen alter ego, Allota. She was everything you expect from a Drag Queen, even if she's just in Mark's head. The love interest, Joel, as well as a sorta ex, Connor, all felt like well rounded characters in themselves, and the writing had me page turning until I got to the end. Looking forward to the next books, and hope to see more of Allota as well as Mark in the series.
A cute novella. No drama at all, but nothing much really happens here. There are some funny inner conversations between Mark and Allota (his inner drag queen persona). Joel’s character is barely developed... even more noticeable because be only get Mark’s POV. No sex on page, except for a brief moment that faded to black. I liked the writing style and the book was well edited, but I could have had more story.
This brand new release from Sean Kennedy feels like a little bit of a departure – for one thing, it’s a bit hotter than I’m used to from him (not a complaint). Although it’s not super explicit there are certainly more than kisses.
Mark Hodges works in a bank during the week, but on Saturday nights, he dons drag and becomes “Allotta Moxie” who struts her stuff on stage at a local gay bar, lip-syncing to ABBA, Kylie and other icons. In the past, revealing Allotta to a boyfriend has led to the demise of the relationship so he’s cautious about who he tells and when.
Mark has a crush on Joel, a new employee (not a direct report so nothing icky here) at the bank but he’s shy and lacks confidence. Allotta has a distinct personality. While the book does explicitly confirm that Allotta is an aspect of Mark’s personality it is also clear that Mark only lets that side of himself out when Allotta is on stage. Outside of that, he’s a shy boy. Allotta, however, is a maneater.
At best I was eccentric; at worst I was certifiable. It wasn’t like I believed Allotta was real—she’s me. But she’d taken on a life of her own, and sometimes I liked it. She had the strength and the courage, and I just followed along in her wake. If I was wearing her wig, her come-fuck-me boots, and her gold hot pants, I would walk straight up to Joel, lie on his desk, my legs up in the air, and I would purr seductively at him. He would have no misunderstanding of my intentions. But I couldn’t exactly do that. Besides him wondering what the fuck I was doing, I’d probably make everybody else in the bank extremely uncomfortable and find myself on a sexual harassment charge.
So it was best to just play it safe, and be good old dependable and boring Mark Hodges.
When Joel asks him out Mark can barely believe his ears. But he’s not a fool and he says yes.
Not a fan of this one. Most of the book is Mark (mc) having a conversation with Alotta (his drag queen persona) in his head. Which, in moderation would have been cute and quirky, but the a lot of the book revolved around the pointless conversations and the attempts at drag queen sass. Also, there was a lot more chemistry between Mark and Conner, the best friend (and kind of ex), than between Mark and Joel, the "pocket gay" from work he falls for. Their relationship was a but of a flat line for me (no conflict or differing opinions, just everything working out great from him asking him out to the final reveal). It was a short read, but nothing to pull me back for the rest of the series.
The conversations between Mark and Alotta inside Mark's head are a little exhausting. If I'd been talking to Mark in person, I think I might worry about his constant fugue states...
It was okay.... I found the parts where Mark had conversations with Allotta weird and awkward to read. I didn't really like Joel and was actually hoping Connor & Mark would patch things up. It was an okay short read, but nothing memorable.
If you don't have a fierce inner diva, I would recommend watching a whole season of RuPaul or at least something with lots of fingers snapping followed by "something, something... girlfriend" before starting this book.
I was not prepared. I could not conjured up Mark's inner drag persona on queue. It ended up being a very confusing exercise of stopping and re-reading the last sentence in the right voice, a lot.
It took about half the book to setup Mark's character. There was not enough time to flesh out the romance aspect of the story. I look forward to reading the other "chapters". This story felt more like a teaser.
Well that was mostly a duologue between Mark and Allotta, held in Mark’s head! Allotta is comic and scathing like any great queen and I wish we had seen more of her in action as well as her acerbic comments. I did think connor was the dark horse in waiting but it turns out he really is a friend. Hole does seem to bring out the best in Mark so hopefully any further books will build on that and give Connor some loving. 3.5*
I've always enjoyed Sean Kennedy 's books, and he didn't let me down with this one. Only a short, but lots of wittiness and snark. I loved the conversations one of the MCs often had with himself. Hilarious! Also, the character development, considering it's length, was very good. First in a new series the author is co writing with Renae Kaye, fellow Aussie. Next book out end of this month. Recommended.
This is a really fun, original story. On one hand, we have Allotta, Mark's other half (drag persona) and the awkward friendship between Mark and Connor (they're workmates that hooked up); on the other, the budding romance between Mark and Joel (Mark is afraid to tell him about Allotta). The one constant is Allotta's snarky commentary. A lot of fun.Highly recommend!
This series is a clever investigation of m/m love using songs from the goddess Kylie Minogue and building to Perth Pride celebration. To get the most out of it you’ll need to read the whole series and open your heart to these men and to Kylie. The authors have done for Kylie what Mamma Mia did for ABBA. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Wow! this was different and not what I expected. But I enjoyed it. it was cute, sweet, a bit confusing at first with Mark having conversations with Allotta drag queen and then hot when Allotta strutted her stuff. So, overall I enjoyed the story.
This one just didn't work for me even though I really wanted to enjoy it. The constant conversations between Mark and Allota in his head were just weird and left me feeling almost like he had a split personality.
Sweet, funny, entertaining. Totally digging both MCs in their individuality. The internal dialogues between Mark and his alter ego Alotta were hillarious.
I adore drag queens and the art of drag, so it is always fun to read about drag queens and their male alter ego's. This book was short and fun, this is a great series to read during lunch break where you want to spend half an hour, but not commit to a long new book.
