Ron and his friends made it out of the Virtual Reality competition and did well. Now though they have to deal with the fall out. Everything seems changed and different. Washed out and boring. But they don’t have time to worry about that. The second alien invasion is now inbound. The robots and their masters learned from the last time and are carrying out a larger invasion with better planning. Ron and crew will have to survive the impact of the meteors that are the precursor to invasion. Then the hordes of people that have been driven insane by the attack. Finally, they are going to have to join the resistance and be ready to fight. The robots have new models and learn fast. Superweapons are in production as soon as the robots secure their landing zones and the military is reeling as it tries to deal with displaced populations and an enemy that has planned this attack out after decades spent watching the planet. Ron will have to use every ounce of his ability he has developed in the virtual reality games he’s played. His tactics, knowledge and resourcefulness will be tested to the very limits of his breaking point. If he succeeds, then he and his friends will survive to continue the fight. But a mistake could cost the entire team their lives. Sometimes the choice is not in your hands. What is really going on though? And is the AI in league with the robotic invaders or does it have some other worse plan for Ron and his friends?
I was given this book as a gift by the author. This review is my way of saying thank you. This is a story that jumps from virtual reality, and then to reality. A group of teens (Ron, Tina, Ed and Sue) have been playing a VR game of war. They are very good at the game and they work in the game as a team.
Until one day, whilst they are at school, a group of rocks out in space, which were supposed to make a near miss pass at Earth, change direction and start to drop all over the planet. Ron and his team and a small group of other students, plus one teacher, make it down into the school bunker. That's when things start to get strange. First a boy seemingly hangs himself, then two boys and a girl start to behave very badly, trying to capture and assault the others in the group. The decision is made to give these three dangerous teens some provisions and then lock them outside.
Meanwhile all hell is breaking lose on the surface as robots start to land on Earth. They are intent on taking over the planet. Our team of teens decide to take a chance and leave the bunker, but as they are leaving, a mob of maybe 100 people comes round the corner and heads straight for them. A firefight ensues. Many are killed, then some other group turns up to help our team. They decide to go with this group...after that it gets even more interesting.
Ron, Tina, Ed and Sue are fighting not only for their own survival but to aid a group of people who are trying to take on the invading robots.
Then the story switches to a discussion between two high ranking AI's. They evaluate the battles that are going on and they discuss the qualities of the group of people fighting.
I must admit to being slightly confused by this inclusion of their conversation. It doesn't seem to add to the flow of the story. However, as with all things., patience helps. At the last part of the book, much that was obscure, suddenly made since.
This book, although a bit confusing in parts and bitty in others, was actually not too bad. I found it hard to follow quite a bit but it was a explained at the end.
The dialogue was a bit stunted and the characters were quite flat without much personality. The action scenes weren't too bad, if a little dull.
For the most part, I found this book reasonable interesting. The story was unusual and it tried to tell a rather complicated story but only succeeded in confusing me from the start. I found it hard to feel anything for the main characters, and the dialogue was not inspiring. It's a shame, as the concept of the story was really good. Perhaps this could do with a rewrite?
This alien invasion story is technically well written by someone who is obviously well versed in military tactics and weapons and has the hard edged feel of some of the best SF of the golden age. Four friends who've just finished a VR gaming competition suddenly find themselves fighting to survive in the middle of an attack by aliens. AI, robots and big rocks hitting the earth. Virtual Reality Nightmare is serious SF and well worth the read.
Well I will be honest here. I don’t usually read books about techno thrillers earth invasions and the like like but I am glad I read this one. The interest is there from the beginning to an end you just don’t see coming. Highly recommended must read.
Join Ron, Sue, Tina and Ed as they fight a war against Aliens. Trying new tactics to find what works they battle to save the world. Tom Germann's story ends with an amazing finale that will blow your mind! Who is real and who is an avatar, can you tell?
