An easy-to-read book with fun characters, visual humor, and an important theme--the joy of helping others
Two friends, Mike, an elephant, and Pat, a fish in a fishbowl, are in a rowboat. While Mike naps, Pat jumps into the ocean, where he meets other fish. When a shark appears, Pat and his new fish friends are in trouble . . . until two chubby gray legs appear near the surface.
Mike lands on the shark and frightens the toothy fish away. Mike has a great time underwater until he realizes he is out of air. Now the fish help Mike.
Pat and Mike might be unlikely friends since one is a goldfish and the other is an elephant. But they certainly have each other's backs when they go for a boat ride. Pat leaps from the goldfish bowl into the water to play with the other fish while Mike takes a nap. A shark threatens poor Pat who tries desperately to hide. Thank goodness for Mike who takes a plunge into the briny deep and saves his friend. Afterward, Mike himself needs a little help getting back to the surface of the water, and the other fish provide some assistance. After all, these two friends need to get back to their boat and doing what they love best--sleeping. The easy-to-read text and illustrations, created with ink, watercolors, gouache, and acrylic, make this title an engaging choice for beginning readers. There is enough action to keep them interested, and enough visual appeal what with all those failed attempts of Pat to find a place where the shark cannot find him. This is a good choice for youngsters looking to practice their reading skills.

Pat, a fish, and Mike, an elephant, are on a boat when Pat jumps in and swims after other fish. Pat is taken by a shark and Mike rescues him. Only now, Mike can’t get to the top of the water so the fish help him.
This is a great book full of kindergarten sight words. The story is easy to follow which is important when a reader is hyper-focused on sounding out words. The illustrations do not distract from the words, but are good aids for understanding.
Mike, an elephant, and Pat, a fish, go out on a boat when Pat decides to jump out of her bowl into the ocean. She meets lots of fish and a crab, but when the crab yells "hide!" all the fish find hiding places except for Pat who gets into the mouth of the shark. Mike lands on the shark, expelling Pat in the process. After Mike plays in the water, the fish help Mike to the surface where they both take a nap. This introductory reader provides a humorous, easy to follow story with few words. Illustrations engage the reader.
Mike, the elephant, naps on his boat. His fish, Pat, is in his fishbowl and leaps out into the sea. There are lots of new creatures to see, but when a shark arrives they all must hide. Pat hasn't had much experience hiding. Who will save him? Bright illustrations are filled with patterns and fun. Very short sentences, with one-syllable words, provide a reading opportunity while much of the story is carried by the illustrations. This is a Guided Reading Level D book designed for beginning readers in grades 1 and 2. It will successfully meet their needs for an easy, fun book.
Pat and Mike are friends who prove they have each other's back when one or the other confronts danger. Pat is a fish who jumps from the fishbowl and goes down in the sea to play with other fish, while Mike is an elephant sleeping in the boat above. After spotting a shark, Pat realizes there are no hiding places and soon the shark attacks. No worries though because Mike has snorkeled down to sit on the shark and help his friend loose! Very easy for young readers and has a lot of great colorful pictures.
A pet fish takes a trip to the ocean where he meets other fish and has a good time. When a shark arrives, the little fish doesn't know what to do, but he gets some help from a friend. Cute book for beginning readers but would be great for shark-themed storytime as well.
I have come across very few books in the I Like to Read series that I haven't liked, and this is no exception. A number of them are great read alouds because of the humor and succint text. I laughed right out loud when the elephant showed up. Great stuff.
It's really funny because there is a elephant went in the water. Why him did it is because he want to see the fishy I think. There's a shark that what I didn't like. Just kidding. I liked it. There's crabs, all types of fishes. And there is clams. The end.
This was not my most favorite book. It didn't really teach much. It just showed off how scary sharks can be. And sharks could be possibly going extinct so I feel this was not a good book. Especially not for young children.
Really cute book for younger audiences that teaches friendship, depending on each other and safety. This book can be used when you want to teach younger children about being nice to each other and how friends protect each other.
A cute few word book where a fish jumps out of his bowl into the ocean and then has an adventure where he might need help. preschool and up for concept funny not scary
My nephew loved it so much he re-read it half a dozen times in one sitting. He couldn’t stop cracking up at this one bit. Spent ten minutes on a book he could’ve finished in one, lol.
This was a cute book. A very easy read for beginner readers. Nothing too hard or crazy of a story but a good read for the littles. I would recommend this book to others.
Cute, colorful, with just the right dose of OH NO! DANGER! for little kids (I'd say 2-4 year olds) and then a humorous and happy resolution, with everyone coming together to help out.
A fish-in-a-bowl and an elephant take a boat trip and swim underwater. Elephant is too big to hide from the shark. Picture-book sized; text has easy reader simplicity.
