The Long Range Desert Group in World War II

Rate this book
Formed in June 1940 for the purpose of gathering intelligence behindenemy lines, the Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) played a secretive but vital role in North Africa during World War II. Highly trained in mechanized reconnaissance and specializing in desert operations, the unit provided support to the Special Air Service (SAS) in missions across the vast and treacherous terrain of the Western Desert. In this highly illustrated history of the LRDG, Gavin Mortimer reveals the origins and dramatic operations of Britain's first ever special forces unit.

The LRDG will always fascinate me. These swashbucking adventurers who dove deep into the desert with a spirit of exploration, camraderie and mission, all while trying to fight a war. It's just incredible. The beginnings of what today would be considered Special Forces units in modern military was little more than an experiment in a "see what works" attitude of the British in the desert fighting the Italians and the Germans.

Great overview, quick read with lots of "boots on the ground" type look at what these soldiers did while Mortimer keeps the reader engaged with brief, concise explanations of the grander strategy involved.

Lots of great pictures, although sometimes there was a picture on a page with little bearing as to what was actually going on on that page. Minor quibble.

A wonderful report on a courageous band of warriors.

I read this book in Cairo after a visit to Soda Oasis. Looking for background on the WW II role of Siwa, I stumbled onto Mortimer's narrative. I loved the mixture of training, combat and desert life described in exciting episodes.

As a Vietnam veteran, I particularly enjoyed the improvised tactics and "attitude" portrayed throughout.

Great job, Gavin.
