After her Click’d catastrophe, Allie Navarro is determined to redeem herself. So when the class gets an assignment to create a mobile game from recycled code, Allie pairs up with Courtney, her best friend from CodeGirls camp, to create the perfect app: Swap’d.

Kids buy, sell, and trade stuff at school all the time. Candy. Clothes. Video games. Slime. Why not make a fiercely competitive, totally anonymous, beat-the-clock game out of it?

Once Swap’d is in full-swing, Allie is certain that it’s the answer to all her problems. She’s making quick cash to help Courtney buy that really expensive plane ticket to come visit her. It’s giving her an excuse to have an actual conversation with her super-secret crush. And it looks like she might finally beat her archenemy-turned-friend, Nathan. She’s thought of everything. Or… has she?

Fun, entertaining, superficial

Allie has a great idea for her upcoming coding project for school that will also bring Courtney to California! It will solve all her problems. Until it makes more…

If you’re looking for an easy read with all the middle school vibes and a female coder… this book is for you!! (Read Click’d first 🙃). But, if your looking for an inspiring and deep book, maybe save this one for later.

I enjoyed reading this but it just didn’t have a lot of substance besides the stuff on the surface. It was slow at times but also had done fun parts.

I don’t know lol. I have mixed feelings but I’m glad I read it, I think 😉

This is a great book! It felt like a great sequel to Clickd and I thought it was so sweet how Courtney got to come to California anyways at the end because they worked so hard to raise the money with the game Allie created. Also Allie and Nathan are kinda cute together so it’s too bad there is no third book where we can read about the summer hackathon with Nathan, Allie and Courtney. Everything finished on a great note though!

Swap’d was a very good sequel to Click’d, other than the fact that it was basically the exact same plot. Allie builds an app, the whole school and other people love it, it crashes, and she teams up with Nathan to fix it. I enjoyed finally meeting Courtney, who was a very likable character.
And, okay, honestly, “Hey, Three! Hey, Six!” has got NOTHING on “Allie-gator”!

While this book wasn't as good as the first one, it was still pretty good! I should definitely pick up some more middle grade in the future when I need something more focused on adventure and exploring the world.

Swap'd by Tamara Ireland Stone, 323 pages. Disney Hyperion, 2019. $17. 9781484786963.
Language: G (1 swear, 0 'F'); Mature content: G; Violence: G

BUYING ADVISORY: EL, MS - ESSENTIAL

AUDIENCE APPEAL: HIGH

Allie's newest assignment in Computer Science challenges her to mix up and reuse code from a variety of different projects--hers and friends--to create something new. With her CodeGirls friend, Courtney, she creates a new app called Swap'd that allows kids at school to buy and sell things in an auction-based game. Swap'd is an overnight success and Allie thinks it could make her a shoo-in for the summer Hackathon program--if she can finally decide to apply. The money from Swap'd will help her bring Courtney out for a visit during the Game Con weekend, and she might even be able to use the app to finagle a meeting with the cute boy she's flirted with on the bus! Everything seems to be falling into place--until it becomes apparent Allie hasn't actually thought of everything to make all these perfect plans work.

I loved Stone's first book featuring Allie and the CodeGirls--Click'd--and this one is no different. Its a great story that will appeal especially to a rising generation of computer coders, but really any young reader can appreciate it. I also really love that the book is totally clean (there is only one super tame swear toward the very end) and feels very realistic in its telling. I hope she writes more!

My biggest disappointment from this book stems from the fact that Nathan and Allie only barely ended up together at the end of the book. I needed more from them. I need a third book where they’re both mentors together, a job that they both recommended each other for which was so freaking cute!!!! My other complaint was that the main character had too good of morals, it just seemed a little unbelievable, especially when you think of how many people sell things at school anyway, not that the whole people actually participating in this game at a high rate wasn’t also unbelievable. I did like Marcus though and wanted more of his happiness as well, he was so cute and sweet.

New York Times Best Selling Author, Tamara Ireland Stone is back with another empowering coming-of-age novel, the second in her Click’d series, Swap’d (Disney Hyperion).

Middle school coder Allie Navarro has faced challenges before. She has learned from the mistakes she made in Click’d, and is back to prove to herself, her family and friends and Naomi Ryan, the CEO of Spyglass Game, that she deserves a spot at the Spyglass Summer Teen Hackathon, a summer program for talented teen coders.

Allie is excited for the opportunity to attend the elite summer camp, but also feels conflicted because the camp would interfere with her availability to spend time with her best friend Courtney (also a coder).

Seeking a solution, Allie finds the Game On Con, a highly-coveted conference for tech-savvy individuals. Allie and one guest are invited to this conference featuring an exclusive meet and greet with CEO Naomi herself. Allie hopes to have Courtney accompany her to the Game On Con, but must find a way to cover the staggering cost of her plane ticket to San Francisco, over 400 dollars.

This task seems almost impossible until Allie is assigned a new project in Advanced Computer Science with the theme of reusing and repurposing old code. While brainstorming ideas on the bus with her good friend Zoe, Allie has an idea that may be the answer her all her problems.

"If you think coding is a boring and difficult subject, you’ll be surprised, so grab this book now!" ~ Chen Pink, reviewer of ‘Swap'd’

I applauded the author, Tamara, based on four points:
• She made coding easy to understand for middle schoolers and an adult like me.
• The three main characters, Allie, Courtney, and Nathan, were good role models to readers around their age. They are young, bold, and determined to build their dreams regardless of failure.
• The adventures in the story kept us wanting to know the characters’ journey towards building the apps and learning the value of friendship and their responsibility as children and students for their actions.
• The illustrations provided help young readers understand how an auction works.

Suggestion for improvement (based on the 2020 paperback edition):
The page dividers in the book indicate which days are not deemed fit. Instead, the days can be indicated on the chapter page as a heading before the start of each sentence.

I really really liked BOTH of these books, and I read this book just at a time of life where it was a wonderful, happy escape for me, so I just thank the author again for writing it. It was funny and sweet, full of friendship and yet some pretty hard woes for a kiddo to go through too. These students learn and build character, and they were pretty great to begin with, says me. She wrote this so you do NOT have to be a gamer or a techie or a coder to understand it or to enjoy it, so don't let the dissuade you. Read this book. It's really nice! I liked it! It was fun and energetic with sprinkles of mystery and just enough parent interaction, but not too much, as the kids did their stuff and told the story. Oh, and there's a little tiny bit of romance in here too, junior high kind, so it's new and fresh and light and sweet. Read Click'd and then read Swap'd for best enjoyment, says me.

Once again, Allie is looking to code a killer app and get recognition, in this case a place in a summer coding program. Also she wants to bring Courtney, from the other summer coding camp, to visit her in San Francisco and go to a computer/software expo, and she and Courtney need to figure out how to pay for the plane ticket. So she puts together an app that can make them some money. As in Click'd, the book showcases girls who into STEM subjects, and Allie's app has unforeseen consequences.

I didn't like this quite as much as Click'd because it seemed more contrived; people acted in ways they would not in real life, and things unfolded in unlikely ways. Maybe I excused this more in Click'd because it was the first book. Still it was fun to read, and it's always great to see competitive nerd-ish girls.

Allie's so happy ....a school assignment might be the answer to getting her friend Courtney's plane ticket so the two can go to Game On Con. The ticket is four hundred dollars and they have to earn the money so they decide to combine their apps they coded at camp last summer....plus some of their other camp friends' codes. They end up with Swap'd which sells items to their school friends and they make a percentage. It's going great. The app is a big hit and they're earning money. Then Allie gets some terrible news that an ruin all their plans.
I love these stories where kids work together. They're focused and driven to succeed. Friends are important. They're good kids trying to do the right thing but end up in trouble. Fun story.

Book plug #3 8A

The book I read was swap’d by Tamara Ireland Stone, the genre is realistic fiction and this book is the second book in the series. The main character is Allie she is a super smart girl. In the book she makes a new app to sell stuff. To make money to get her friend to San Francisco where she lives. She wants to get her friend to this event called game on. Allie finds out that her game is actually illegal and she has to give all the money back to everyone who got stuff. I would rate this book an 8 out of 10. If you like teen life books i think you will really like this book.

My almost twelve year old was a HUGE fan of Click'd and jumped up and down when I showed her what I was reading on my kindle. We both read it and loved it. As a mom of a tween and hs teacher I felt like Tamara Ireland Stone wrote yet another great middle grade book. It is relevant and appropriate for the age group. My daughter said it was a good book (and she devoured it). She is hoping for more from this lovely author. Thank you so much netgalley for this arc in exchange for my honest opinion!

I loved this book, even though I haven’t read Click’d. We went to our library, I noticed this on a shelf. I couldn’t put it down, even though I had 2 other books to get through. Since I love coding and agree that there aren’t enough female programmers, I thought it was a wonderful way to gently encourage coding in girls. I hope there’s a third book, and now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go write an illegal auction app.

I literally read this in two hours.
I started at 10:40 and finished at 12:37 😭
The entire time I read this I was either kicking my feet in the air squealing or checking if my parents heard me.
I absolutely love this.
I absolutely recommend this.
And I swear to god if Tamara Ireland Stone doesn’t write a third book I’m literally shooting myself.
(That was a joke btw 😭)
I NEED EVERYONE TO READ THIS (please 🙏)

Spoiler! Awesome!

The only reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because while amazing- Click’d will always be the best book in the series! I loved how for once something went right for Ally in the end! When Marcus told Ally he likes Zoe i couldn’t help but fall in love with the book! Please make a third book! Can’t wait for hacathon!
