I see a lot of negative reviews here but honestly I liked this book a lot. It's like a starter guide to saying yes to things in life that can give you that extra nudge to say yes to more opportunities and adventures. It being broken up into different sections of life means that you're not getting more of one over another. I'll definitely be giving this a go
Take a look into The Power of Yes–it won’t be denied. Saying yes to this book suggests a want to bring more positivity and opportunity into one’s life, and this book will help you succeed. With bold colors, quotations, and typefaces, Abbie Headon’s well designed book creates an image of creativity and fullness even at first glance.
This, however, may be more of an introductory self help book, one that professes positivity and creativity with little anecdotal evidence or statistical evidence to back it. But what it lacks in resources, it makes up for in sheer optimism. Though not for those well-versed in the self help world of Marie Kondo, Francine Jay, Brene Brown, or Jen Sincero, it still makes for a good starting point and getting one’s confidence up to start saying “Yes!” a little bit more often.
I had a mixed feeling about this book. First of all, I felt like this book was trying to be like all self-help books and often was very cliché, things that were said in this book I have heard before. I did like that it was a positive book and really placed emphasis on taking care of your mental health. The format of this book was aesthetically pleasing and easy to read, yet I didn't really enjoy this book. I could tell that it was trying to be more inspiring and seemed like it was trying too hard at times, but at the same time I didn't hate this book, I didn't feel like I was dragging through something so terrible that I couldn't take it. No, with this book I felt like it was an okay book, but not my cup of tea. I wanted there to be more, there needed to be something, I don't know what, but something. It felt like a book that would be sold in Urban Outfitters. It didn't have the substance or depth that I was searching for. Well I am looking forward for more reviews to come in about this book.
The Power of Yes is also clearly marketed as an inspirational book to buy on a whim. I actually picked it up off of the public library shelves on a whim. Sure, it's kind of a self-help type of book, but somedays, one is in the mood for a light inspirational self-help type of read. Author Abbie Headon includes a story example of someone who said "yes" in his or her life, a motivational quote (and there's nothing wrong with reading something motivational if it helps to move beyond reading into action), and a "Yes Lab" with each section. The nice part about calling these "labs" are labs are made for experimenting. So, if the motivations and experiments lead one to actions for good, then possibly this book is worth saying "yes" to for less than twenty-four hours. (I started it on one day and finished it the next without staying up all night.) Three stars.
This was very basic so only slightly inspiring. It was a format like reading bullet points. The chapters focused on: dreaming big, exploring, learning, career, relationships and so on.
“Keeping an open mind, trusting in yourself, making small steps forward and never punishing yourself when you slip back, you’ll always have the best chance of making your dreams become real.”
“The mutual desire to see each other succeed is an important foundation of a good friendship.”
“Seeing an endless stream of our friends’ carefully curated and photo filtered ‘best bits’ can make us feel like we’re not matching up, so stepping back from social media is a great way to restore our sense of self-worth.”
“What’s important is to have a vision of hope for how you want things to change, and to follow that vision with patience and determination until you are able to make progress.”
This book is for someone who is looking to reboot/refresh their entangled life. A collection of well organised/structured checklists from all aspects in our life from habits to relationships, from career to contribution to world. Perfect for a quick read, gear up and start. The design & organisation of the content keeps the reader engaged to finish it in one sitting.
If you are looking for a guided / detailed advice, this is probably not what you are looking for. This can trigger the right notes in your brain to create what works for you and for me this was a timely perfect one.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It was a very quick read. It was short (about 150 pages) and the pages weren't filled entirely. This read a lot like a blog post, but I really enjoyed it as a quick and easy read. It's not a book that goes very in depth with tons of stories and statistics, but if you're just looking to read a quick pick-me-up book with small tidbits of advice, this is a great choice. :) There were some pages I particularly enjoyed because they were very encouraging and spoke to me where I'm at now. I hope to revisit this one again and again for that extra boost!
Abbie Headon is a writer and editor who has written this superficial, simplistic and ultimately unhelpful book that aims to give readers the ability to put the spark into life and achieve their goals but ultimately is a mix of bland checklists, empty affirmation statements and brief biographies of famous people who have a vague link to the point of the previous chapter such that I didn’t really see the point of it.
This book reads much like an infographic with all the diverse fonts and patterns and bolds and colors. It bleeds sunshine and endless fluff which is a turn off for about 90% of the folks I know. It’s got some good quotes but largely feels unsubstantive. Good stuff to remember but not really a deep dive. The inspirational stories chosen were almost all of women (a good change of pace for once). The “tune out the critics” parts were also golden. Left me with a “wait, that’s it...” by the end.
This book took me 14 minutes to flip through. I felt like I was reading a 20-something blogger's advice on colorful pages with lots of bold print and 50 point font; it definitely has visual appeal. It has good overall advice: take risks, travel, don't let your inner critic get you down, step outside of your comfort zone. Perfect for young people who need a nudge to live life a bit.
I brought this book when browsing the shops in the beginning of this year, I've only just gotten round to reading it! At first reading the intro of this self-help book I felt oh my goodness what have I brought! But I've preserved with it and thank goodness I did because this is going to hopefully help me become a better confident person who goes for what she desires.
I love, love, love this book. One of the best books ever written. I found this book to be inspirational and motivational. Personally, I read fantasy, mystery and adventure books and never go out of my comfort zone. But this book taught me to try other generes. Loved this book and will read it again a million times. :))
Quick read that covers the basics of positivity and personal growth. There's nothing deep diving into the topics for guidance, but each section skims the surface. Ok if you're starting out with books to better who you are.
I loved reading this book. It is very inspirational. What I love the most it is that's hort and brave and you will finished it, in the same date, easily but it took me a little longer, 2 days. I recommend it to anyone looking for inspiration, and positive guidance.
Nothing special. It's 160 pages but really it's like...maybe 50? Full of images and quotes, it's uplifting sure but not very deep. I'd say it's okay for someone who is reading a self-help book for the first time. To dip their toes.
One of many good books I read! Very simple guideline to improve our quality of life. We are all bombarded by social media’s these days and that made us never believe in ourselves. The book gave me the simple practical solution that I can actually start it today. Simply...say YES.
Of you love quick reads with snippets of good learnings, bright colors and full of demographics then this book is for you! Not a deep dive but for those that like a quick read them this it.
