This is a very good overview of the history of the lesbian identity and the modern-day implications of being a lesbian in Western society—not so modern, though, considering the book was written in 1974. It is dated, so if you are expecting you can relate to it fully as a lesbian in 2025, choose another book. However, if you wish to learn about our queer foremothers such as Sappho and Renée Vivien while learning about the beginnings of the queer liberation movement and in the United States, and how real lesbians engaged with this movement during the 70's, this is a wonderful start.
